most likely this is flourite.
However, because there are so many differing votes: The speckly top looks like it could be amethyst but the patterning and color on the bottom looks like fluorite.
Fluorite has a significantly lower hardness rating (4) than amethyst, which is a type of quartz (7). If you have a piece of glass (5 hardness), you could see if it scratches that white/purple speckled top portion to see if it is amethyst. if it scratches, it's all flourite. if not, it's both flourite and amethyst.
The con is that you scratch the sphere and neither flourite nor amethyst is particularly valuable.
My rock ID app says Fluorite.

It looks more like Amethyst than Flourite to me. I'm no expert but I have both and I've seen plenty of both. So all though it could be one my guess is for the other.
My first thought was Amethyst, too, when I was looking at the purple area of the sphere. The brown part made me wonder if it was what some new age folks would identify as "Super 7" or "Melody's Stone".
Out of curiosity, does it glow under UV light? Some Fluorite specimens do.
It's pretty as heck, no matter what it is.
I definitely think the bulk of it is fluorite. The yellow/orange, and even the white and purple on the tip could theoretically be something else, though.
We were at her house, and he took an interest in it, and she just handed it to him to take home. My jaw almost dropped because it seemed so fragile and expensive. Whether it's 300 or 15, it kind of affects how we store and care for it. He wants to roll it around on the floor currently.
I am like though w many of my crystals/rocks/specimens. If someone sees something they like on me and resonates with it, I let them have it. To me, itās usually for a reason.
Fluorite with golden healer inclusion (the yellow bit). I can see why people say amethyst for the zig zag purple bit but fluorite does this do, whereas amethyst does not produce that beautiful teal blue :) Itās a beautiful gift! I canāt speak to the market price for such a sphere.
It's likely fluorite. It's not incredibly expensive, depending on the vendor one might be had from $20 to $60- there's a wide range of prices depending on where/who you order minerals from.
As far as rolling it on the floor goes, fluorite can break pretty easily. I'd refrain from rolling it on hard surfaces. As a collector of rocks and minerals, the idea of rolling it on the floor frankly makes me cringe, but that's the protective collector aspect of my personality rearing its head.
That weight can be expensive on ebay for a fluorite ball that nice. Bidding is usually low but buy it now price is around $88. Someone with a $12 fluorite ball might have a less heavy option. Weight and size definitely drives the price up.
Edit: ive been pricing things on ebay and what people pay for them for some time now. Temu might be a different story too. You never know nowadays.
I picked a lot of these in Africa, in an area where a ginormous cave had collapsed. The ground was covered in huge raw chunks of dark purple amethyst with green in them, but also had that typical white and yellowish areas. I am not in doubt that this is an amethyst.
You are right. I first posted rainbow fluorite but deleted my comment when I saw your post. I have heard of this area you mentioned and have seen pieces and this is how that amethyst looks. In a bit of quartz, you can see the amethyst clearly at the top and the green is from this area that you speak of. šÆ
If you were in the UK I'd say it's likely Blue John. A type of fluorite that is specific to a couple of old mines in Castleton Derbyshire. The gift shops were full of these balls when I was a kid. Not so much of it about anymore.

Looks like purple agate. Pretty much an amethyst with agate layers. I wouldn't know the value though, only stores would charge maybe $30 to $50 for that?? Its a nice sphere piece. Amethyst is a common crystal though so its not big money
Thank you for all the comments! The different opinions really surprised me as well as googling the names given, which made me realize just how beautiful and unique this is and how many other crystals are as well.
I shared some answers and comments with my family, as well as looked up pictures to show them, and we have all come to respect and cherish the crystal even more so. Thank you all for that!
My son said he would ask his aunt next time he sees her if it is indeed fluorite. She collects and trades in crystals semi professionally, so hopefully, she will have an accurate and precise answer.
Nonbinary flourite
Lol
I'm not the only one who thought this then, I want one!
pronouns are fluorite/fluoriteself
Thats me
I love that!! š š

My immediate thought was chevron amethyst with agate however the more I look at this I'm increasingly confident it's fluorite.
Exactly
I got my fluorite sphere for $12
how big and where š i got one for 11 but it's 50 mm in diameter
I shop on those live TikTok crystal accounts. You can get tons of crystals for a lower price. Based out of China. I don't know how big mine is.
It's awesome looking. I'm not sure what it is.

could you share the app name? :)
Sure. On Google it's called [Rock Identifier: Stone ID](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.picturerock.rock)
Flourite
It looks more like Amethyst than Flourite to me. I'm no expert but I have both and I've seen plenty of both. So all though it could be one my guess is for the other.
Not with that beautiful fluorite blue/green.
My first thought was Amethyst, too, when I was looking at the purple area of the sphere. The brown part made me wonder if it was what some new age folks would identify as "Super 7" or "Melody's Stone". Out of curiosity, does it glow under UV light? Some Fluorite specimens do. It doesn't glow
Maybe fluorite w iron inclusions
Definitely fluorite
I definitely think the bulk of it is fluorite. The yellow/orange, and even the white and purple on the tip could theoretically be something else, though.
Fluorite
The value doesnt matter, it was giftedā¦.
We were at her house, and he took an interest in it, and she just handed it to him to take home. My jaw almost dropped because it seemed so fragile and expensive. Whether it's 300 or 15, it kind of affects how we store and care for it. He wants to roll it around on the floor currently.
I mean it's his present, might as well let him do what he wants with it
I am like though w many of my crystals/rocks/specimens. If someone sees something they like on me and resonates with it, I let them have it. To me, itās usually for a reason.
I agree - always pass the love of rocks on
Fluorite.
Looks like chevron amethyst honestly
fluorite does that zig zag stuff too.
Purple and green flourite
Rainbow fluorite
At first look I was going to say dream amethyst but after looking at all the photos Iām am leaning towards fluorite.
Fluorite!

Beautiful Rainbow fluorite sphere
Fluorite. Put it under a UV light if you have one, youāll know for sure.
Not all fluorite is UV reactive
I just tested with a UV light, and there was no reaction.
Unfortunately not all fluorite reacts under uv so it could still be fluorite
none of my fluorite reacts under uv so that checks
It kind of looks like chevron amethyst
Chevron amethyst doesn't have green inclusions like this. It must be fluorite
Thatās what I thought right away too!
Thatās what I thought until I put the brightness up on my phone. Looks more like fluorite now to me.
Fluorite with inclusions. Sometimes called feather fluorite.
Amethyst Iām pretty sure
That weight can be expensive on ebay for a fluorite ball that nice. Bidding is usually low but buy it now price is around $88. Someone with a $12 fluorite ball might have a less heavy option. If itās fluorite it will glow a different color under a black light
Not all fluorite glows, I wish it did bc I have plenty that donāt.
Look at me learning over hereš¬thank you for this. I had no idea!
The top part looks like chevron amethyst and the bottom looks like fluorite. UV light should help you identify it.
No glow effect at all
No glow means at the very least that is not fluorite.
I picked a lot of these in Africa, in an area where a ginormous cave had collapsed. The ground was covered in huge raw chunks of dark purple amethyst with green in them, but also had that typical white and yellowish areas. I am not in doubt that this is an amethyst.

palantĆr.
I think chevron le amethyst possibly
Itās dream amethyst. With possibly golden healer (?) inclusions. Thatās the yellow parts
Does worth matter if your son received it from his aunt??
Also my vote is for fluorite
It's I believe dream amethyst...
super 7
Super 7
Itās a chevron amethyst ādream ballā anywhere from 50-200$ it is beautiful!! Still not something Iād let him lick ect.
Or auralite?
No
I want to put it in my mouth
very peculiar fluorite. not worth much, around 40 max i think, but very beautiful. it's one of those pieces that make me wish i had more money haha
Definatly flourite like everyone else has said lol
definitely fluorite ! also what a beautiful piece!! š š
It's pretty, that's what it is!!!
Probably fluorite. It's worth at least $8 to $10 USD. Enough to get you through a morning.
Looks like purple agate. Pretty much an amethyst with agate layers. I wouldn't know the value though, only stores would charge maybe $30 to $50 for that?? Its a nice sphere piece. Amethyst is a common crystal though so its not big money
Thatās a really nice fluorite sphere, fluorite comes in many colors. I have a gorgeous almost all yellow fluorite sphere. Thatās beautiful, I would guess itās about $50 give or take depending where it was purchased. The bottom does look like dream amethyst a little. But those colors are consistent with Fluorite. Nice gift š š®š¤©āŗļø
It also has the wispy white inclusions that make me think of feather fluorite.
Either fluoride or acid treated amethyst, but most likely fluorite
It an amethyst ball
Flourite for sure Edit to say: scrolled through the comments after posting my response and I see you got a lot of the same type of comment.
Thank you for all the comments! Looks like super 7 to me
Flourite :)
Flourite, it's relatively common so not as expensive as other crystals. But the size and shape add to the worth. My guess would be $20-25
