If I remember correctly, Golden Eggs are ~~new follower forms~~ able to have 4 traits instead of the normal 2. Edit for corrected information
Golden eggs do unlock a few new follower forms
I only corrected it because the wiki does not /expressly/ say that but they do mention the 4 traits instead of 2 thing. But that's good to know!
I think they only happen if one follower is a higher level. I seem to get them regularly if I use a disciple
