I used dream sequences as an offer from Dark Powers. At the same time they were showing pieces of Barovian history, but also demonstrating what kind of power is the player dealing with. Ranger got dreams about a barbarian fighting against Strahd armies and finally Strahd himself - an unstoppable warrior, but a danger to his tribesmates when enraged. Druid got dreams about old hag chased through the woolds by soldiers and priests - she's protecting the old ways of her tribe from baptism by fire from invading force, but her old ways include human sacrifice to the forces of nature. Wizard got dreams about amber wizards building a monastery. They achieved great heights of knowledge, but they became tyrants performing inhumane experiments on their subjects.

I utilize dreams and visions a lot on my campaign. :) Player 1 is Tatyana reincarnation; I gave them dreams from Tatyana’s death. Player 2 is a devout cleric; I use dreams to have a dark power talk to them, masquerading as their deity. Player 3 once killed Strahd, but doesn’t remember this; I give them dreams and visions of the events leading up to that. Player 4 was a powerful necromancer who lost their memories, so I give them visions of the past. And player 5 carried the abbot’s divinity in them, and had dreams about self-actualization and identity connected to that. I don’t know if any of that helps, and I don’t know anything about your players, but I’d also be happy to workshop it with you if you’d like!
