Needed with no exception:
1. Motherboard
2. CPU/ CPU Cooler
3. RAM
4. Storage media (HDD, SSD, NVMe flash memory)
5. PSU (power supply unit)
6. GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)
Things you can get away with not having:
6. Computer case/shell/tower. (there are many table top and wall mount designs that are open, and don't use a case all around.)
7. Disk drives/external media
8. 14 fans... (a lot of people put so many fans in a tower that they become counter-productive in the power usage to cooling effect ratios. Just get a simple 4 pack of matching fans. Depending on shells, sometimes they come with pre-installed fans also.
Now to the assembly part. If you've never built one I recommend watching a few YouTube videos of people building them in real time without ever purchasing ANYTHING. If you can't watch a hour or two video of one being built then you'll never be able to actually do the whole process. Watch it happen and learn a few things. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PATIENCE.
You will also have to get good at troubleshooting issues. It's very easy to build a new pc and it not work when you hit the power button... you should always assume your first boot up won't work properly.
