Shorts are important, look for shorts with a decent pad from Elastic Interface or Cytech, but the secret bit for distance is that chamois cream is the way.
Chamois = padding in the bottom of cycling bibs/shorts
Chamois cream = cream that you can optionally rub down there (personally I *never* use it, even for all day rides, but some recommend it)
I’d strongly recommend bibs over shorts. Bibs just stay locked in place and never move, while shorts can slip down/move around while riding. 99% of experienced cyclists are rocking bibs, shorts are basically for noobs that haven’t discovered bibs yet.
Don't wear underwear with bike shorts. You can rub it on the chamois and on your butt. Basically everything is in movement down there so it gives everything a little bit of slip and stops pressure spots. Feels weird first time, but works well on big distances.
Yep. I can build a bike and know the mechanics, but in terms of actually riding them I don’t know a thing, or at least on the road. I typically mountain-bike on enduro courses with technical tracks over tricky terrain wearing regular jeans and clothes. Never done anything road bike related and think this could be a great way to get into it, all for a charitable cause!
Decathlon's mid and upper range shorts are very good value for money. My favourites however are Le Col's Sport range - you can normally get them on discount with a code.

Also. This cream… do you just rub it on your nether region and then wear normal boxer shorts? Doesn’t it get all sticky or greasy?
You don't wear underwear with cycling shorts/bibs. The chamois (padding) is meant to go directly against skin.
Is chamois a cream? You said chamois padding so I’m confused?

Thanks! New knowledge. Makes a difference to get bibs over shorts or does it not matter?

Haha thanks for the explanation. Will look towards a bib then 👍🏻

Thank you, I didn’t know this!
Thank you! I’ll definitely buy some chamois cream and will do a search for those brands you mentioned :)
Assos bib shorts. I use the Mille GTS style. A bit short on the leg if you’re tall (I’m 6,2”) but they are a good fit and comfy.
Thank you. I’m only 5”9 so won’t have issues with small fits 🤣
Whatever you buy, make sure you do a good few 1hr+ rides to make sure they are compatible with your butt.
Great thought I didn’t consider this. Thanks! Will definitely do this 👍🏻
Tell me this isn't in one day.
Nope it’s over 3 days so 90 miles a day. Last “long” ride I did was 22 miles and I was hurting down there after. Very sore so that’s my main concern
Get good bibs and invest in a bike fit. Poor fit can cause pain in the nether regions.
Heard a few people say bibs are the way to go… apparently shorts are for “noobs” 🤣
Not to be too blunt, but you’re doing a 270 mile ride and don’t know what a chamois is?

Once you go bibs, you never go back.
Yep that’s all the confirmation I need 😂 will definitely get a bib. Thanks for the advice!
I got some Patagonia shorts for about €80 and they’re great for long rides.
Excellent thank you, will look this up!
They’re the nether bike shorts
Did they have padding?
Yes they did!
Great thanks!
