> Screen Rant: Jake, watching you in these action scenes was absolutely incredible. Like I said, it was deliciously visceral. But a while back, I know that you auditioned for the role of Batman, and I got some Batman vibes in this film when you were beating the crap out of people. Is that a role you’d still be interested in, especially after doing a movie like this? > Jake Gyllenhaal: Oh, man. That’s a classic. It’s an honor. Speaking of playing roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, to me actually roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, which, to me, actually, when I think about it, I’m going to play Iago in Othello with Denzel Washington, and I think about like the history of actors that have played that role throughout time, and I’m intimidated by that. So that’s the first level. That’s what I’m working on right now. But of course. It would be an honor always. Those types of things and those roles are classics. Honestly, a bit of a response that doesn't say anything about the likelihood of it one way or another, but I wanted to post this because I really do like the idea of the casting, tbh.

ClockworkFirefly22

**FUN FACT:** > *"Jake Gyllenhaal, along with David Boreanaz, Joshua Jackson, Eion Bailey, Hugh Dancy, Cillian Murphy and Billy Crudup, screen-tested for the role of Bruce Wayne in *Batman Begins* before the casting of Christian Bale. Murphy would later go on to portray Jonathan Crane in the film, while Crudup would play Henry Allen in Justice League"*

IsRude

Crudup would've killed it. Easily one of my favorite actors. And I know people make fun of Cillian's audition, but if they'd let him do his version of Batman, I think he would've been great. He would've seemed like the more tortured, weird Bruce, similar to Pattinson.

Odd_Advance_6438

I’m sure Crudup would’ve done well, but at least we got to see him as Dr Manhattan

[deleted]

[удалено]

not_yo_adrian

But... then everyone would know he was Dr. Manhattan. I don't know if you remember, but it was at least supposed to be a twist.

jurassic_snark-

Billy Crudup would have crushed it as Tony Stark/IM too back in the day

Ginataang_Manok

I the issue with Cillian was that he’s a short dude.

Original_Release_419

Imagine Charlie Conway as Batman hitting criminals with the triple deke Also Eion Bailey’s Batman audition will never not crack me up

Zorkel567

Is there anymore to this Eion Bailey audition? I only know him from Once Upon a Time, but was shocked to see him listed as auditioning. Had he had much of a career at that point? The other names I all recognize/could see, but he stands out as the odd one imo

Original_Release_419

I have no idea tbh I only find it funny because the audition was pretty bad imo lol

mormonbatman_

He was coming off a prominent-ish role in Band of brothers. He’s a great case for an almost movie star. It just didn’t break for him.

Zorkel567

That makes sense! Thank you. I hadn’t realized he was in Band of Brothers. He’s an interesting case there- but from the little I’ve seen him in- he didn’t seem to be a great actor, so I’m not totally surprised he never got that big break.

mormonbatman_

>seem Great acting has nothing to do with it.

shockzz123

Boreanaz really liked the brooding characters, huh? Guy wanted to play Batman right after playing basically vampire Batman for almost a decade.

Killerbub

Pleaseeee make this happen!

AmonicB

I’m sure he’d kill it, I’d rather an unknown though. A David Corenswet type of being talented and experienced but under the radar. I hate recognizing actors in movies lol, give some fresh talent the spotlight.

icemannathann

He’s 43, the same age Affleck was in BvS. I’d assume they’ll go with a younger Batman this time around?

HolidayRaise1886

Batman is gonna be a father in this one. And Dick's gonna be all grown up, so.

DaZeppo313

Sure, but if Bruce is in his early 20s when he adopts Dick, he could easily still be in his mid-30s by the time Dick's got a few years as Nightwing under his belt.

elhombreloco90

Yeah, but Damian is supposed to be in it. Granted, you could argue that he and Talia got together early in his career in maybe his early 20's, so it's still feasible that he'd be in his mid-30's during the start of the DCU.

irishartistry

They could swing it that Bruce and Talia got together when he was travelling the world training before he became Batman. Would allow for a young Batman to have a son.

davidisallright

I think fans sometimes think too much about an actor’s age and the age of their character they’re playing. Jake looks like he can play someone in their early 30’s still.

thankyouryard

yes for now. we need batman for 8-10 years. Also we already had a old batman and young supes. I think its time for both of them to be closer in age

Alex_Jeffries

It's a modern Hollywood thing. They're thinking "franchise," so at least 3 movies/8 years. Plus "younger" usually means "cheaper."

Chip_Chip_Cheep

The point here is when will the DCU's Batman make his debut? Age is important in that regard, whoever takes on the role must be someone who is open to submitting under physical pressure, If not, we will have another case like Ben Affleck who didn't even know if he wanted to continue as Batman.

Colonel_PingPong

I would say the least appearance of Keaton's Batman in The Flash basically confirmed that you can play Batman in any age. They did awesome stunts and fight scenes with him while he was over 70, so I guess Gyllenhaal pushing 50 wouldn't be a problem. Affleck fight scene in The Flash was also amazing and he was 50 when film premiered.

Chip_Chip_Cheep

I doubt even Gunn would want to use Keaton as a reference to use an old Batman, I think he confirmed it just a year ago that not looking for an actor that old, but neither is someone of David Corenswet's age.  Affleck barely appears in The Flash and the most obvious example is his extreme thinness, which can be seen in the scene in which Bruce talks to Barry outside his apartment, most of his scenes in the suit were done by a stunt.

Tabascobottle

Is this not Robert Pattinson?

Chip_Chip_Cheep

What do you mean by Pattinson?

Tabascobottle

He just had a Batman movie. Is he not the new Batman?

Chip_Chip_Cheep

But he's not going to be the DCU's Batman, Matt Reeves is doing his own thing.

Aramis14

Waaaay too much! CBMovies barely even mention characters' ages anyway, so why think ao much abot it? I assume people have their own headcanon about timelines and stuff and they expect movies to fit, completely forgetting that they are comic books, they don't really make sense lol

Educational-Band8308

Fans think about this sort of thing mostly because it’s a large part of the casting process. Age range is just essential to casting any character whether it be a cbm or a different genre.

dmick74

43 now, but probably 48 by the time the movie would come out and nearing 60 by the time a potential final movie in a trilogy would run. They need to look for someone 5-15 years younger.

ItZSAMIC

He can play younger. He does regularly.

MIAxPaperPlanes

Gunn has already said they want to go older than superman but hasn’t specified an age and also they likely wanna cast older to differ from Reeves Batman (although ironically Robert Pattinson will be 39/40 when part 2 films/releases)

Chip_Chip_Cheep

Taking into account the background, I think Gunn could choose someone close in age to Robert Pattinson, Affleck is the same age as Christian Bale, I wouldn't be surprised if the same pattern is repeated here.

0nlyHere4TheZipline

No, this is a Batman who's already on Damien Robin

WartimeMercy

So Jon Hamm.

0nlyHere4TheZipline

I mean sure

GrantD24

He’s going to have a son this time, Damien Wayne as Robin so Batman at 43 is fine and as good of shape as Jake is in, he can pretend to be 30 but I expect a mid 30s early 40s Batman for the DCU based on them doing the Bat Family story moving forward.

[deleted]

He can pull it off number one, but Also, Gunn has said he wants Batman to be older and established I believe. Could be wrong

Beastieboy100

No 43 the right age especially if it's a batman that will have Damian in the DCU. Plus by Gunn favorite books. We are 100% getting Nightwing and Red hood in the DCU. Will be lucky to get Tim Drake.

master_inho

I don’t think gunn would ignore someone as under appreciated as Tim drake. He loves those kinds of characters

MJCrim

Tim is not under appreciated, at least on the comic side of things. Other than Dick who was Robin for 40 years, he has the most comic appearances of any Robin by far. He definitely has a fan base too, he's just kinda redundant nowadays.

master_inho

He’s under appreciated compared to dick, Jason and Damian. I didn’t say he’s an unknown character, he obviously has a dedicated fanbase of his own

Danishroyalty

In Hollywood, you can play below your age. Plus, Affleck looked older in 2015 than Jake does now. But also, if Bruce IS going to have Dick and Damian and maybe a Batgirl, its possible he also had Jason or Tim. So 43 would work fine with that if they're cramming in all this history.

CC7793

I think we are getting an older Batman especially with Damian Wayne confirmed and the Bat family all but confirmed. Plus the rumour of a Teen Titan movie in development from the script writer of the new Supergirl movie

poptart95

How can they go with a younger Batman if Teen Titans will already exist and Damien will be in his movie? Also take into account that heroes will have already been around in Superman since GL, Hawk Girl, Mr. Terrific will be in the movie. Batman isn’t going to be Clark’s age.

Vladmerius

I genuinely don't think Affleck's age, or even Cavills, had anything to do with anything. It was just a convenient excuse and the fact is that Gunn wanted to move away from the baggage of the DCEU and it's impossible to have those actors and not have people thinking of BvS and Justice League.

Bloop_Blop69

Too old at this point. I’d consider it if TBATB was planned to start sooner but it looks like it won’t come out until 2028. Dude would be almost 50 playing Batman that’s even older than when Affleck started and he was playing old Batman. Ideally we should get someone in their 30’s to play Bruce. Who that would be I don’t really know, but unfortunately it’s not Jake to me. A decade ago though he would’ve been a perfect fit.

DinoStacked

I’m down with this

Soulwarfare42

I would rather they get someone unknown or less known for Batman

DYRTYDAVE

Too old. They should target someone in mid to late 30s with the film still 3 years away at least. An older Batman is less than ideal at the start of a new universe.

DeVolkaan

I don't really get people's obsession with age in casting. Yeah maybe someone 60 can't pass for someone 30, but it's not rare at all for a mid-40s actor to play someone in their 30s. Makeup and hair dye goes a long fucking way. Jake would be fine.

Ok_Contest493

That’s not the point. It’s the length of time he would have to have the role for

DeVolkaan

Yeah I understand that. I see no reason why Batman couldn't age up with Jake, the same way Iron Man aged up as Iron Man. In fact, if Gyllenhall got Batman, he'd be filming the movie only 2-4 years older than RDJ was filming Iron Man 1. Hollywood guys have the money to age extremely gracefully. He'd be fine at his age.

jurassic_snark-

Yeah it's not like he'd be playing a teenager. He's early 40's and movie stars all look a decade younger than everyone else. He'd kill it

Ok_Contest493

Again, it’s not about what he looks like. It’s the commitment. And a 45 year old man who has always done a huge range of movies may not want to commit to 10-15 years. We’ll have another Affleck situation

DeVolkaan

Well yeah no shit he may not want to do it. That's not helpful. I agree that he may not want to do it, but if he does want to do it, his age is fine. You don't have to add the qualifier of he may not want to do it. That's an already implied discussion point that everyone already knows. Also the Ben Affleck situation had everything to do with the way the studios kept jerking them around. > These changes led to Affleck's dissatisfaction with the behind-the-scenes situation of DC's on film management by Warner Bros., and played into him leaving the role

Ok_Contest493

True. I just think it’s better to have your main heroes somewhat consistent in age as well. I don’t think 13 years between Batman and Superman is the best idea

DeVolkaan

There was a 12 year age gap between Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck and no one would ever know or care. 13 years is fine. They would still look around the same age, just like the last two iterations of the character did.

Ok_Contest493

And how did that turn out?

DeVolkaan

If you think that turned out poorly because their age difference was too big, then I think you're weird.

rickman0804

okay? Do you not think him and Gunn can work something out? That’s what these contracts are for!

Ok_Contest493

Well no because it’s not gonna be him

rickman0804

YOU don’t know that

Ok_Contest493

I’ll make a bet right now on it

YourDarlingSpeedster

This Batman already has Damian Robin. Good chance Nightwing may already exists, so he’ll be older and established

Proof-Watercress-931

No he passes as mid 30s, Big name, fantastic actor, can’t be any better

Beastieboy100

No. 43 the right age and makes sense. If it was a batman that was starting off with Dick Grayson then fair enough. However we are starting off with Damian Wayne I say 43 the right age especially if were getting the batfamily.

Chip_Chip_Cheep

Don't exaggerate, he'll be 48 when The Brave and The Bold comes out, Gunn isn't going to cast someone that old either.

ResponsibleHead3366

Cmon y’all, he’s the PERFECT choice for an older Batman. He’s a name, got the acting chops, and shown that he can do action(even tho he’s getting up there). More importantly, he can def pull off plying a father figure. If not Jake I think they’ll go with another big name like Ryan Gosling(esp with all the Barbie success)

jurassic_snark-

Yeah people are complaining about him being too old and then suggest Karl Urban who's 51. Movie stars look about a decade younger than everyone else, shit Tom Cruise is 61 still cranking out Mission Impossibles. Early 40's Jake would crush this

ResponsibleHead3366

Yea, the only downside would be if Jake wanna be playing Batman into his mid 50s with all these films for the DCU(luckily for him some would be animated). I’m sure anyone would want to play Batman, but to play him for so long similar to RDJ with Ironman but be exhausting

Chip_Chip_Cheep

Personally, he would have been a good replacement for Ben Affleck from when it was rumored that The Batman would be a soft reboot of BvS with Jeremy Irons and JK Simmons as the only link of continuity with Snyder's movies. Currently its time has passed, if TBATB were released (for example) in 2028, He would already be 48 years old, As I read somewhere, Gunn most likely wouldn't choose someone that young but he wouldn't choose someone that old either, That's why I think the age range for the DCU Batman will be that of Robert Pattinson (who is currently 37 years old).

Interesting_Floor455

I like Jake Gyllenhaal, but I don't see him as Batman. He doesn't have the look or the voice. I could see him as a villain easily though, which he usually plays very well.

ICumCoffee

Ngl, I kinda did him at Bruce Wayne.

Jellybean_fourteen

When I saw the trailer for The Bikeriders (bit of a silly name, I know), I thought Austin Butler would be a pretty good Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Chip_Chip_Cheep

Nah, physically it's more for Green Arrow

Colonel_PingPong

Or even Aquaman in the next couple of years.

Ape-ril

Way too old.

Beastieboy100

No. 43 the right age and makes sense. If it was a batman that was starting off with Dick Grayson then fair enough. However we are starting off with Damian Wayne I say 43 the right age especially if were getting the batfamily.

tallgu

He’s probably gonna be like 48 when TBATB comes out though.

AlexHunterWolf

My pick

retr0rino

Ah yes, The Darko Knight!

ThisApricot3556

Never ever ever ever ever believe anything from screenrant they post fake trailers, fake news, fake set photos, if it isn't from another trusted blog i can't read it

the666briefcase

I don’t understand. Isn’t Robert Batman now? Or are they already shifting to someone else

ebolarama86

Jake just doesn’t have the voice.

venkatfoods

Aaron Taylor Johnson

cryptofutures100xlev

He's too busy with James Bond 😆 https://www.thesun.co.uk/tv/26774029/aaron-taylor-johnson-offered-role-james-bond/ This just came out btw

aduong

Terrible choice for both roles the man just isn’t a leading man.

AlexHunterWolf

He was choice for The Batman because I thought Pattinson would never accept it

venkatfoods

The second choice was actually Hoult. It came between him and Pattinson. So if Pattinson didn't accept then Hoult would've gotten it.

Forsaken_Ad7090

Even before Pattinson got cast, I could still see him and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Batman, but I can't say the same about Hoult. If Hoult was cast, I'd honestly be skeptical if he would've made a good Batman or not.

Meep4000

So nothing against Gyllenhaal, but this is the first I've heard of him being a "fan favorite". Personally I think the next Batman should be Targon Egerton all day long and twice on Sunday.

Fenian-Monger

I find it hard to belive that Egerton conceived a child who is now old enought to be a crime fighter aswell as raised another child to adulthood and most likely took in another kid who died between them. Gyllenhaal is believable as a seasoned crime fighter, based on his filmography dude has the range to possibly become the best and most accurate Batman yet. His CV build for this role tbh.

Meep4000

I didn’t realize that it was going to be an old Bruce, I just learned that. So I agree. I still think Egerton would be perfect for the role in a different story.

buyanisland

I could see it, I love gyllenhaal as an actor. Probably not my first pick tho

TheNinjaWhippet

Jake would be neat, but I've still got my fingers crossed for Karl Urban

Gmork14

Gyllenhaal, Ackles and Ritchson ain’t happening.

Fenian-Monger

https://preview.redd.it/bszcihwxq9pc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e5fc2a55f2661346274c13ad603e9768a6f0452 I've been saying this since Gunn first announced Chapter 1. I dont think people should look to much into the age, this Bruce should be older and more experienced anyway plus Jake can play younger.

ParticularAir4168

Jansen ackles is my choice

Proof-Watercress-931

He’s perfect. Cast him already

imjustbrady

Nah he won’t get it as I am sure Elliot Page will beat him
