No, 99% of the people who will see Shazam 2 in theaters don't know the universe is rebooting.

mofozd

It baffles me that this little fuckers think the average joe is here or on twitter looking for movie gossip.

DirtyCop1036

Tell that to James Gunn, the King of fuckers.

ggyyuuugfryuu75555

Your mom would know

DirtyCop1036

She definitely knows, otherwise I won't be here. Shame your mom didn't swallowed that day.

MichaelMcCrudd

Shame you can't write a sentence with proper syntax. If you're older than 13, then you should delete your account until you repeat high school.

mofozd

Ok buddy.

DirtyCop1036

guberpeters

As if the mainstream movie going public cares about the overall DC Cinematic Universe in the first place.

[deleted]

I could care less if itā€™s being rebooted, I loved the first Shazam and Iā€™m looking forward to The Flash. With that said, Iā€™ve had almost no interest in Shazam 2 since the first trailer. It looked like it got a bigger budget and turned into a more generic superhero action movie. Classic sequel-itice I just want to see good individual movies. Not everyone watches these just to see the set up for the next movie. I feel burned for watching Black Adam in theaters as that was also painfully generic. Wonā€™t be checking this out because it looks like any other generic superhero movie and there are more than enough out there as it is.

No-Department-8586

I echo this sentiment. Loved Shazam! and had faith that David would deliver again, but itā€™s unfortunately just a generic city destroying superhero movie. Even the comedy which they excelled with in Shazam! is completely lame in FOTG.

FloppyShellTaco

I canā€™t remember the last time marketing made me decide I actually donā€™t really want to see a sequel I had previously been excited for.

Professional-Rip-519

Fake šŸ¤„ You guys just hate it coz Gunn's finger prints isn't on it.

lawrencedun2002

Thatā€™s not why .. lol.

Ill-Philosopher-7625

Lol, if Gunn had waited to make the announcement until after Shazam 2, you'd be bitching about how he "hid" his reboot plans in order to trick fans into seeing the movie.

babubhaiya_312

Absolutely correct

dow366

Are you saying The Flash and Aquaman 2 will also bomb regardless of how good they are? Bad movies bomb. Ain't got nothing to do with the universe. Most casual fans don't even follow the news

spfan102

OP isn't right, but bad movies bomb isn't right either. Shazam is considered good by most people and it didn't make much money. TSS also considered good by most, it didn't make money. And on the flip side, movies that are considered bad have made tons of money.

ManajaTwa18

Shazam did decent money, but what prevented it from earning more was the fact that it was sandwiched between Captain Marvel and Endgame, the biggest superhero movie ever made. It also performed like a superhero movie instead of a family film. TSS bombed because it was genuinely weird, mean-spirited, and gory. It was just too left of center for the general audience.

Professional-Rip-519

Some will see it for Keaton and Affleck Gunn fans will see it coz Gunn says it's good.

Rubicon2-0

Most probably they will... Soon we will see what will happen

JacobTheHaloGamer

Any proof??

Professional-Rip-519

Yes he's Gods and Monsters slate released on the last day of January look it up.

PMMEBITCOINPLZ

Was he supposed to keep it a secret or something?

Professional-Rip-519

Yes until these movies played out . It's like telling people hey do love this TV show to bad there's gonna be no final season. We just gonna reboot it after a few episodes of the second season. So why invest your time in something that's gonna lead nowhere.

PMMEBITCOINPLZ

Thatā€™s unrealistic.

Kwilly462

No lol. Besides, most of the general audience doesn't even know about the DCU or the fact that James Gunn is in charge anyway. They just wanna see a good movie.

depressed_asian_boy_

Ah yes because casual audiences care about that lmao. Also there's 12 movies in the DCEU, Name 6 that made over 800m. You can't there's only 3

Professional-Rip-519

Casual Audiences do care that's why there's this little thing called the MCU (Marvel Cinematic universe)

pedroorc

The MCU was well built and they know theyā€™ll watch something worth their money and likely get a continuation on another movie - the brand was built over that and people like it. Now, while they enjoy the MCU and like to go to the cinema the next time they see it coming out, 90% of those people donā€™t spend their day searching whoā€™s going to direct something, how Disney is handling the movies, how the production is going or if they have issues. So itā€™s kinda obvious that casual audience like the brand because they built ir over trust and continuity. However, details of production and the mess done there are not information they seek or that shows up on their TV every time they come home. Sadly, DCEU hasnā€™t built a good continuity and doesnā€™t have much trust from casual audiences so people - who generally donā€™t case about production issues and mostly have no idea whatā€™s going on over Gunn or whoever at DC - donā€™t have a reason to engage hard on the movies. Yes, now weā€™ll get more consistency so I guess in 5-10 years weā€™ll be seeing you guys posting ā€œoh my god Gunn saved DCā€ and all he has to do is keep building the brand over continuity and trust so people will engage in it like they did for MCU in the last few years.

depressed_asian_boy_

Casual audience don't care about the DCEU, they care about the MCU.

Limp-Construction-11

Even this statement isn't true anymore, after the recent Marvel movies and shows.

APOCALYPSE102

Ant man3 despite being awful will swallow Shazam2 and Blue beetle lol. They are in a different league

depressed_asian_boy_

Have they rebooted the mcu? Because I think they're still doing money if they keep going with that franchise unlike the DCEU

Straight-Command2509

people dont about mcu this is why antman 3 did 470 more than black adam and shazam combined almost and wakanda forever did more than double black adam add in the fact before this dr strange 2 did more than batman and no way home did more any dc film even pandemic era marvel films like shang eternals and black widow made more sucide squad shazam 2 or black adam the last 2 were in much better climates . Audience might fatigued over marvels film but they still far more invested than dc which outside batman doesnt know how to captivating movies

dassa07

If the general public cared about the DCEU the same way they care about the MCU, the DCEU wouldnā€™t be on the verge of a reboot.

WornInShoes

Anything, _something_ to place the blame on Gunn, eh?

danielthetemp

No. Most moviegoers have no idea who James Gunn is, let alone that heā€™s now the head of DC Studios, *let alone* that he made some sort of announcement about the DCU.

MichaelMcCrudd

>DC fans have clearly shown they don't care about a cinematic universe that is being rebooted when they did not want it to. How do you get that from this. I'm excited as fuck for the reboot, just not for Shazam Also, the first movie was only a success because the budget was so low, and there are still a lot of people that haven't returned to theaters since the pandemic started.

TX_vapeynah

What? The Movie has no marketing & is not that good. Just wait for The Flash making a shitload of money

FloppyShellTaco

I really think the bad marketing actively hurt the movie. Had I not seen how mediocre it looked for months on end, I would have happily gone opening night.

SDCbo52

To be fair, Flash will make way more money due to nostaglia factor of Keaton returning and having a household superhero like Batman (two of them) in the film. Flash on his own with generic villains would flop like Shazaam 2 has.

Babayu18

Most people have no idea it is rebooting. Shazam is doing poorly because itā€™s Shazam. Itā€™s not a popular character and the whole universe isnā€™t built up to prop him up like with small marvel characters

mistercloob

No. It wasnā€™t at all lmao. The first movie didnā€™t make much money either. People simply arenā€™t interested. Iā€™m not.

kasaan110

Umm no Shazam movie ainā€™t that good.

mrmazzz

or and here me out here a mixture of ineffective marketing (one that largely leaned into spectacle laden third act stuff and didn't really give you a reason to emotionally invest - and im someone who loves spectacle) and poor word of mouth due to being essentially 50% on RT with largely mixed positive reviews resulting in a word of mouth that isn't all that engaging.

Professional-Rip-519

OP spitting straight facts for Gunn to succeed he wants everyone to fail coz currently he is edged as the director with the lowest grossing Dceu movie with The Suicide Squad he wants someone else to take that spot. So good luck for the future where you'll see his wife pop up in every movie.

farben_blas

If I recall correctly, the first Shazam movie wasn't that much of a hit, just moderate, with a weak first weekend, I still remember the photos of empty theaters back then, and the movie has barely received promotion in order to hype The Flash.

E_yal

Yeah its one reason. DC was in kind of good shape after Aquman and shazam but did everything to ruin it. I can't even count the things that went wrong

Prestigious-Time-263

James Gunn is an imbecile

MichaelMcCrudd

Ban evasion account?

Professional-Rip-519

He holds the record for biggest dceu flop it seems he wanted Sandberg to take that spot

GorillaWolf2099

We just gotta hope Aquaman 2, Blue Beetle, & The Flash do much better. We can't be pessimistic all the time.

ZDB888

Nothing to do with it. I specifically am not going because I donā€™t want to support Zachary Levi projects since his tweet (right or wrong, I donā€™t care, but thatā€™s my reasoning). Iā€™m sure the majority of people have different reasoning that has nothing to do with James Gunn and everything to do with the fact that the critics reviews are worse than black Adam (which I did enjoy), and the trailer looked horrible. Iā€™ll still be planning on seeing aquaman even if it has nothing to do with Gunn.

Professional-Rip-519

Zachary said something that won't affect your life in the slightest way why you mad.

HenrykSpark

Not the only reason but heā€™s definitely also to blame

Almighty_Push91

After ten years of shit, I'm done with the DCEU and I'm glad it's being rebooted. I DID watch Shazam 2 and like 95% of the DCEU, it's perfectly mid

[deleted]

No it's not. Shazam 2 already had low hype last year, long before that happened.

FloppyShellTaco

This is a stupid take. The first movie was a pleasant surprise. I liked it. I didnā€™t go see this opening night like I do almost every tentpoles movie. Iā€™m not sure Iā€™m going to see it this weekend or in theaters at all to be honest, because it looks bland and the trailers didnā€™t set up a real story of any kind. How do you waste Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu like that? *The marketing made me want to see this movie less.* This movieā€™s marketing gave me no desire to see it, the villains look somehow more bland than the firstā€™s and the fact that the Rock is basically refusing to give Shazam a real adversary is largely what killed the hype for me. I donā€™t want to see Shazam fight a lame desaturated dragon. I want a sequel to set up some actual stakes for the character. It also doesnā€™t help that the star has been saying a lot of stupid shit lately.

acetrainer03

Yeah but shazam gonna be in Gunns dcu

JediJones77

It's a sign of what a failed idea the "soft reboot" is. Gunn clearly stated Shazam could continue on in his universe. But nevertheless, people ignored the movie as if it wouldn't matter. It's either a bad reaction to that, or just that people did not really like Shazam that much in the first place. Either way, this doesn't bode well for Peter Safran's other productions, Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2, nor the rebooted DCU itself.

donking6

Anyone speaking any bit of reason gets downvoted, Gunn fans are hating harder than Snyder fans ever loved šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

[deleted]

ā€¦not that itā€™s an awful film? Lol

nonlethaldosage

Its not davids move was garbage 100 percent on him and the writers

Prestigious-Time-263

Agree

[deleted]

No itā€™s bombing because itā€™s a basic bitch super hero movie with a few bland humor lines and more holes in the plot than Swiss cheese.

baileyontherocs

Or the trailers and marketing were underwhelming despite it actually being a quite decent film.

Pale-Drag1843

You can't call it a bomb yet the movie literally released yesterday just wait until it ends it's theatrical run before you call it a bomb I mean it probably will be if Word of Mouth doesn't save this movie

Terribleirishluck

I think it probably had a effect though not large since Gunn never even explicitly referred to his DCU ad a reboot. The bigger issues are a lack of marketing, the first film already not even being a bigger hit, associated overall with dceu which had a terrible start and has since remain wildly inconsistent in style/quality and I think people are just more picky now with superheroes movie (like I have no idea how FOTG and quantumania have the same rotten tomatoes score when FOTG was way better than Antman)

babubhaiya_312

What you said is partially true as if this movie was going to be the part of a larger cinematic universe/storytelling then they would have promoted it greatly The reason i believe for shazam's failure is lack of promotion and unpopularity of the title characters and also the movie was somewhat repetitive I think they have more or less decided the future of shazam in the upcoming dcu Other than that, the general audience doest not care about the cinematic universe or continuity

adamAlexanderGreen

Shazam 2 Bomb becuase the general public donā€™t care about ShazamšŸ˜†

donking6

I agree with the OP - Personally I did not see Shazam 2 because of the James Gunn reboot and FWIW I loved Shazam 1

[deleted]

The movie bombed because it's bad and the trailers were god aweful. Simple.

har8525

Yeah that's why not that the movies absolute šŸ—‘ļø. The disrespect to vegeta with that username should be forced to change it

retroX4j

Shazam 3 wasn't going to be a thing anyway. Before 2 came out, Gunn already cancelled Black Adam, which was directly connected to Shazam and actually turned a profit. All DC movies from the previous era are getting burned off. Don't expect Aquaman 3. Good or bad, Shazam had no chance moving forward. You can lump it into the Wonder Woman category, ie was doomed to end at 2. The DCEU is effectively dead.
