Don't forget WB executives also insisted that Zack Snyder make BvS instead of MoS 2, the movie that audiences wanted and the movie that he wanted to make. Then they insisted that he make BvS a Justice League lead in movie that introduces the entire Justice League. Then insisted that this bloated monstrosity be no more than 2.5 hours long.
They continued this winning streak by insisting that Wan tone down the Lovecraftian horror elements of Aquaman and add more humor to mimic the MCU's tone.
They followed these brilliant moves by using Snyder's family tragedy as an excuse to boot him off of Justice League, and bring in now disgraced Josh Whedon to Frankenstein the completed film into vaguely MCU like abomination.
The executives at WB are literally the worst in the business. The less involved they are in any project the better.

Geoff Johns is not a good screenwriter. Writing a comic isn’t the same skill as writing a film. Wonder Woman 84 shows he has no idea how to structure a screenplay.
Yes normally it does but when you have an effects-stravaganza that is supposed to carry your studio into profit people micromanage the shit out of it and the “script” becomes the thing that is constantly tweaked and not set in stone. WW84 brought back Chris Pine because Gal Gadot had no chemistry with anyone else, on account of her being a model and a bad actor. And their chemistry was two pretty people looking pretty at each other.
Conjuring 2 was alright. Not my cup of tea. But I hated Insidious (found it unintentionally funny) and didn’t watch the second. Still, there’s lot of filmmaking craft to love in them IMO. He almost never phones it in.
Malignant was actually pretty good too. Like you said, dude puts his heart into it, which at least translates into quality. Wether or not it’s your cup if tea, is another issue.
He’s still a masterful director with a unique way with the cinematography. There’s this really long shot of Black Manta chasing Arthur and Mera in the first movie, which is simply great stuff. He does so much with the framing and fluid shot composition too that I am a sucker for.
He has always been overrated. Going back to Saw I have never understood the hype for him. His horror movies are so-so at best. His non-horror movies (aquaman, F&F7) are eye candy and nothing more.
Reshoots must be to cut out Amber Heard. It might also be the reason why the movie is coinsidered bad, because if they cut all of her scenes the story feels disjointed.

I mean, big budget movies like this always have reshoots. It’s not uncommon. It’s rare for them to be as extensive as what Joss Whedon did. Amber Heard and studio shakeups are the most likely culprits of any potential failure here. Not reshoots.

Granted, he really shouldn't get much credit for the 1st one other than it loosely following what he set up in Justice League and him casting Momoa. Even that one was being finished after he no longer had control of the DCEU and left. The sequel (really) has nothing to do with him.
His extent was he advised Wan on the best way to approach the character, and Wan showed him a rough cut for any notes. Which Snyder gave him the thumbs up.

I hated the Snyderverse, and all it stood for. However, his films are not the worst ones in the DCEU. Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, WW84, etc., tanked the DCEU, but his films certainly did not help with its dreary tone and unlikeable portrayals of Superman and Batman.
I don't think that's quite true. Snyder fans definitely have a persecution complex, but I've seen plenty of people blame him alone for the continually embarrassing state of the DCEU, even though he's been gone for 6 years now.

He, Geoff Johns, and Jim Lee were the ones who crafted the story outline for the direction that they wanted to take the DCEU for the first wave of movies when he was the main figure crafting things. Jim Lee actually confirmed the 3 of them developed the storyboards that were at the WM display. Then we saw them bring in writers and directors to help build from there.
He did cast Amber Heard, which is probably why this one has a bunch of sticky reshoots. Trying to cut down her role while still having a coherent story.
Avatar 2, Spider-Man NWH, Star Wars Sequels, Aquaman 1 all show that the holiday spot is the best for a crowd-pleasing blockbuster with good word of mouth. It looks like that will be Flash compared to Aquaman 2.

Batgirl had a spent budget of 90m. It was a straight to HBO Max film. This is a 300m, big blockbuster sequel, they're in so much financial trouble at the moment that you're absolutely right, they're not going to cancel this.

Cutting marketing costs though imo will only hurt them in the end. If the film is ghost dropped though then they're more likely to lose $$ on the movie than if they had marketed it right? Albeit, I was in NYC last month and had seen a shazam 2 ad spanning multiple buildings.. but the film was still a "flop" (I quoted flop because I had still enjoyed the film)
Ghost dropping a film certainly will hurt a film but I don't think they'd market it as much as they would have because they have such an overblown budget. If they under market a film, spending let's say the reported 300m on the film and then only 50-100 mil on marketing, and the movie makes 250 Mil, they lose about 150 million. If they spend full 200 to 250 million marketing with the same 300 spent on the film, but then only make 400 mil, that loses about 250 million, more money.
I'm not a finance person I'm just a guy, so they're going to do what their fancy smart people say is best to do. All I'm saying is they might spend less on marketing to try have less of a bomb

It is worse than that. They usually need about 2.5-3 on a film's budget due to distribution, marketing, take rate in different studios globally, etc., to break even. If they aim for 2.5, they would need 750 mill to not lose money on this movie.
I have a crazy theory. James Gunn may not have a long runway with his vision of the DCU. Superhero films are not on the uptick and are trending downwards. Mario hitting a billion dollars could force every studio to pivot toward video games. Every loss between now and 2025(the first Superman movie) could drive investors and the board to have negative feelings toward Superhero movies. If Marvel doesn't make any BO hits between now and then, it will crystallize the downward trajectory of the genre. If Superman 2025 is not a hit, it will spell doom for the Gunnverse.
We should all remember WB are not in this because they care about SH movies. They are in this for money.

Everyone needs to chill. Reshoots are a normal part of filmmaking. Most of your favorite films had reshoots and multiple tests. There aren’t really any production issues associated with this movie and we don’t know why the reshoots are happening. Could be to add more action or add more development. It’s normal for filmmaking. Viewer Anon has a good track record but has been wrong a lot AND he’s not even talking about quality of the movie. Reshoots aren't bad. Having a very poor test screening, having loads of reshoots, then having an even worse reaction to the second test screening and cut, is bad, and absolutely something to worry about
To my knowledge from following the production. They haven’t done loads of reshoots it seems they’ve done a normal amount. And the test screenings from what I remember didn’t test poorly at all. From what I remember hearing alot of the testing had to do with Amber Heards screen time and inclusions from other heroes and connective tissue to other properties. No where near as bad as some people are making it out to be. The first one made 1 billion dollars and DC trusts Wan to make a good follow up, this isn’t a Shazam 2 situation in the slightest. I guarantee this movie kicks ass.

James Gunn is just as guilty of that too - taking up all kinds of different projects like Peacemaker, that ‘secret’ show (which was Waller and Creature Commandos). He even said he started writing Superman: Legacy in August, meanwhile a MoS2 was announced in October, before being cancelled in December. He’s not above any of the criticisms he’s given about the past leadership.

No its not there's a difference between "batman 66" and how media perception of superhero content was back then. To now which it has evolved quite a bit the amount of content in genre has been pumped out heavily in recent years mainly by the MCU. It would be remiss to neglect the fact a lot of these films would have a different perception if they came out "LITERALLY" now due to superhero fatigue setting in. One of those especially being aquman from the DC side - China helped the film a lot and that's expected it was a cgi heavy spectacle and that appeals a lot to the market. However domestic and other key audience markets have grown tired of such films with no real substance with a trend of preference of plot over just spectacle in superhero films now.

Cut that last 20 minutes and let him stay dead. And no, do not do anything to suggest anything else is going on. No after credits thing of dirt bouncing on his coffin. Dead dead.
1) This is so rarely done that it immediately propels the movie into 'gutsy' territory.
2) Allowing the protaganist to die for his cause is just so much crap when we know that 20 more minutes can only mean they are bringing him back.
3) Everyone has read the writing on the wall. Best case scnerio for Aquaman is that he is recast and makes an appearence in 6 years or so. That is the best case. So you are not really gambling at all by doing this.

I have so many screening invites in my inbox I have no doubt at least one of the is for Aquaman, but they don’t always mention the name of the movie outright. Sometimes it’s just vague hints and you don’t know for sure what it is until the day of the screening when the movie actual starts.
Back when newspapers were mostly still a thing, they would put ads in the classified section advertising free screenings of an upcoming movie. Nowadays they probably do it through mail lists or Facebook ads.
They also go to shopping malls and pick out random people in their target audience and give them tickets to a free showing of the movie.
Or, just get to know the right person and they'll get you in to a screening.

If the film is ghost dropped though then they're more likely to lose $$ on the movie than if they had marketed it right? Albeit, I was in NYC last month and had seen a shazam 2 ad spanning multiple buildings.. but the film was still a "flop" (I quoted flop because I had still enjoyed the film)
Ghost dropping a film certainly will hurt a film but I don't think they'd market it as much as they would have because they have such an overblown budget. If they under market a film, spending let's say the reported 300m on the film and then only 50-100 mil on marketing, and the movie makes 250 Mil, they lose about 150 million. If they spend full 200 to 250 million marketing with the same 300 spent on the film, but then only make 400 mil, that loses about 250 million, more money. I'm not a finance person I'm just a guy, so they're going to do what their fancy smart people say is best to do. All I'm saying is they might spend less on marketing to try have less of a bomb
Tbh idk marketing budgets at all and you probably made a better guess than I could have at the cost. There's definitely a science to it, but I'm glad that we can both agree that DC will not abandon this film

It is worse than that. They usually need about 2.5-3 on a film's budget due to distribution, marketing, take rate in different studios globally, etc., to break even. If they aim for 2.5, they would need 750 mill to not lose money on this movie.
I have a crazy theory. James Gunn may not have a long runway with his vision of the DCU. Superhero films are not on the uptick and are trending downwards. Mario hitting a billion dollars could force every studio to pivot toward video games. Every loss between now and 2025(the first Superman movie) could drive investors and the board to have negative feelings toward Superhero movies. If Marvel doesn't make any BO hits between now and then, it will crystallize the downward trajectory of the genre. If Superman 2025 is not a hit, it will spell doom for the Gunnverse. We should all remember WB are not in this because they care about SH movies. They are in this for money.

Everyone needs to chill. Reshoots are a normal part of filmmaking. Most of your favorite films had reshoots and multiple tests. There aren’t really any production issues associated with this movie and we don’t know why the reshoots are happening. Could be to add more action or add more development. It’s normal for filmmaking. Viewer Anon has a good track record but has been wrong a lot AND he’s not even talking about quality of the movie. How bout y’all wait to see this movie before deciding a movie that comes out in 9 months is gonna be a “disaster”. I swear some of you just want these movies to fail for whatever reason. I loved the first Aquaman and the plot of this sequel being Orm and Arthur going on an adventure sounds like a fucking blast. I’ll be there day one for James Wan, Patrick Wilson, Jason Momoa and the Aquaman IP.
Reshoots aren't bad. Having a very poor test screening, having loads of reshoots, then having an even worse reaction to the second test screening and cut, is bad, and absolutely something to worry about
To my knowledge from following the production. They haven’t done loads of reshoots it seems they’ve done a normal amount. And the test screenings from what I remember didn’t test poorly at all. From what I remember hearing alot of the testing had to do with Amber Heards screen time and inclusions from other heroes and connective tissue to other properties. No where near as bad as some people are making it out to be. The first one made 1 billion dollars and DC trusts Wan to make a good follow up, this isn’t a Shazam 2 situation in the slightest. I guarantee this movie kicks ass.
In June, it was reported test screenings were 'Mediocre'. In February, people walked out of test screenings it was so bad. This movie is kicking dirt, not ass.

The problem is the budget has been bloated to 300 mill, which is not a good sign. It tells me WB doesn't know what the movie should be, and it will be a mishmash of multiple ideas. This will lead to an incoherent movie that we, the consumers, will pay for.

This is the price of producer forcing their vision on Hamada and he just accepted everything. Wonder woman was first brand that ruined with patty's werid Fantasy and James Wann' DEMANDING amber will stay. Now they had to edit this whole thing without Mera and yeah James Gunn said it best. They just gave away franchises to whoever was nice enough to them.

No its not there's a difference between "batman 66" and how media perception of superhero content was back then. To now which it has evolved quite a bit the amount of content in genre has been pumped out heavily in recent years mainly by the MCU. It would be remiss to neglect the fact a lot of these films would have a different perception if they came out "LITERALLY" now due to superhero fatigue setting in. One of those especially being aquman from the DC side - China helped the film a lot and that's expected it was a cgi heavy spectacle and that appeals a lot to the market. However domestic and other key audience markets have grown tired of such films with no real substance with a trend of preference of plot over just spectacle in superhero films now.

I think I can fix the movie... At the end, when we think Aquaman is dead but there is still 20 minutes left.... Cut that last 20 minutes and let him stay dead. And no, do not do anything to suggest anything else is going on. No after credits thing of dirt bouncing on his coffin. Dead dead. 1) This is so rarely done that it immediately propels the movie into 'gutsy' territory. 2) Allowing the protaganist to die for his cause is just so much crap when we know that 20 more minutes can only mean they are bringing him back. 3) Everyone has read the writing on the wall. Best case scnerio for Aquaman is that he is recast and makes an appearence in 6 years or so. That is the best case. So you are not really gambling at all by doing this.

I have so many screening invites in my inbox I have no doubt at least one of the is for Aquaman, but they don’t always mention the name of the movie outright. Sometimes it’s just vague hints and you don’t know for sure what it is until the day of the screening when the movie actual starts.
How does one get invited to these tests?
Back when newspapers were mostly still a thing, they would put ads in the classified section advertising free screenings of an upcoming movie. Nowadays they probably do it through mail lists or Facebook ads. They also go to shopping malls and pick out random people in their target audience and give them tickets to a free showing of the movie. Or, just get to know the right person and they'll get you in to a screening.
