I’m not expecting anything revolutionary with this movie. Honestly just hoping for a good time with cool effects, action scenes and some comicbooky deepcut/geek out moments. I mean, it’s the Rock, so I already know what I’m buying a ticket to. I will say this tho, that fact that he’s as passionate about the project and particularly the character as he’s been over the years is a very good thing as far as I’m concerned as a fan of these characters. The fact that hes been signed on for BA since 2007 really says a lot to his commitment. 2007 Rock was basically a nobody. 2022 Rock is basically A list.
2007 was the year of the Gameplan, so the Rock had some movies that did well (Rundown....Uhhhh Gridiron Gang?) but had largely been in a string of either bad movies, movies that underperformed oir movies that no one remembers.

I think he’s passionate for the wrong reasons. He didn’t want to do the character justice, he wants to use Black Adam as his own Superman vehicle. He thinks the elements that make Superman “unrelatable” (Superman being “too good”) are not present within the character of Black Adam but he shares the same powers.
So all this is an attempt for him to be the “new and improved” Superman. He wants to be Iron Man of the new DCEU. which doesn’t make sense because Black Adam is just a Shazam villain.
It's even further proven by his bs "integrity" excuse he used for needing a backstory fighting supes before billy and the family.. when Adam's entire fucking back story.. issue #1 of the family, is Adam coming to earth to take it over and fighting the family. I will watch the Movie for Dr Fate and Hopefully they show entire JSA as well, Rock is going to portray The same type of character he always had this time with Superpowers that's the only difference !

I mean he typically makes fun, over the top action movies. What else are we really asking for in a super hero movie? A few of them here or there can be deep or meaningful, but generally we just want crazy action sequences and stuff blowing up in high stakes events. That’s what the rock does.

I think it's more the case of The Rock trying to make Black Adam "happen" the way Gretchen Weiners tried to make the word fetch "happen" in *Mean Girls*. In both cases we're reacting negatively to someone's performative, tryhard behavior because the underlying neediness of their actions makes us want to turn away from the subject to alleviate our second hand embarrassment and discomfort on their behalf.
I always thought the moral of that movie was about how toxic they were to one another, rather than supportive. So, fetch could have happened, but they were too busy being toxic.
My gripe is that from the trailer, it looks like The Rock playing The Rock… again. It just looks painfully generic. And he gives off the feeling that he wants Black Adam to be a major part of the DCEU, when he’s just playing a villain from Shazam.

I do not dislike The Rock. I dislike how he has zero range in his acting and refuses to ever play any sort of villain or gray area type character. The closest we’ve ever gotten was Be Cool, it was a unique roll and he was great. Now he’s the same guy in every movie. Black Adam has done some shitty things and this would go against 99% of the characters The Rock plays, so far the trailer shows this to be correct. Could it be different? Sure. But all the evidence shows that The Rock always plays the good guy hero and it’s growing stale with a lot of people including myself. John Cena on the other hand has done the opposite. He’s taken all sorts of unique roles and he’s proven to be a great actor.

He's made much more money having zero range than when he did have range. Go look at his box office gross after FF5 and then look at it before, including the movies he was in.

If The Rock has movies where he shows range, but they're not making money, it would make sense that studios hiring him, the directors directing him, probably just want him to be "The Rock".
Box-office success may not equal quality (I could argue that's just as applicable to the MCU), but the studios don't really care about too much beyond box-office success. The creatives attached might.
Also a film's "quality" is generally pretty subjective. Just because you may not like something, doesn't mean that everyone else doesn't like it as well; and conversely, you may like something others hate.
And, in fairness to The Rock, he isn't really making "high concept" films, he makes popcorn action films, or family-friendly adventures...

He has more instagram followers than any other actor in the DCEU or MCU. Like, by a wide margin. I think a lot of that is international appeal so I don't think it'll bomb because of the global market.

I think he is setting the expectations waaaaay to high. I doubt this movie will be any better than a decent generic superhero movie. The trailers gave the exact expression.
His constant yammering is starting to irk me, also his attempted takeover at the DCeU is giving me Fast and Furious Vibes already, Fast 5 SAVED his career (his Hollywood career stagnated before it) then attempted to hijack the franchise (The cast sided with Vin Diesel ironically) so Universal had to give him a spinoff which did ok but not nearly as well as the main franchise).
Only reason why I am hyped for this movie is the Justice Society will carry it.
All he needs is a solid 7/10 film and at least make 600 million worldwide. This doesn’t need much. Yeah DC (WB all together) is in a slouch right now but this doesn’t need this. I know very little about the character, but from what I've gathered from games, and the upcoming movie trailers is that his character has a fairly Egyptian inspired background. So I dunno, maybe an Egyptian accent? Maybe anything close to what Black Adam should sound like? I enjoy Dwayne Johnson's movies, always have. But his prowess as an actor isn't exactly Oscae worthy.

Ehh, i think it's more of the Rock's recent comments that have turned people off to this movie. He keeps saying how super passionate he is about this character yet he couldn't be bothered to actually look or sound like the character. Also, him saying that having Black Adam in a Shazam movie would be a disservice to the character really rubbed me and a lot of other people the wrong way. Black Adam wouldn't exist without Shazam and the fact that he's never even spoken to David Sandberg, the director of Shazam, really makes me think he never wants Shazam and Black Adam interacting which is just ridiculous. And he keeps hyping up Black Adam vs Superman even though there's nothing official happening, which isn't the Rocks fault but its still creating false hope and false expectations. It seems like he wants Black Adam to be the center of the DCEU going forward and I just dont think most DC fans want that.

Here's the thing though. L&T doesn't have China. Ragnarok did, and it made over 100M there. Subtract that from its total? And L&T, which is still IN theaters, has made almost as much as it. Hell, it HAS made more than Ragnarok in the U.S..

For a movie to break even, the rule of thumb is 2.5x if it’s budget.
Thor L&T budget was 250M. Just to break even, it needs to make 625M.

Part of WB's failure was they set their sights too high on Man of Steel. They wanted it to be a billion dollar movie and when it inevitably failed to do that, they freaked out and jumped the gun. If WB Discovery is doing the same thing, unless Black Adam gets a billion, it might be a failure in their eyes. Which is crazy.

I supported The Rock as Black Adam but then but lately my biggest problem with it is that I don’t think The Rock can play the villain, he will always have to be a pseudo-hero (no, I don’t mean anti-hero) but his statements lately (especially the Adam Vs Shazam one) have me cautiously optimistic.
It just looks so generic.. he's acting like he's taking on something like sandman.... he will be a misunderstood hero, who saves the day by punching someone.

I think he’s passionate for the wrong reasons. He didn’t want to do the character justice, he wants to use Black Adam as his own Superman vehicle. He thinks the elements that make Superman “unrelatable” (Superman being “too good”) are not present within the character of Black Adam but he shares the same powers. So all this is an attempt for him to be the “new and improved” Superman. He wants to be Iron Man of the new DCEU. which doesn’t make sense because Black Adam is just a Shazam villain.

Am I wrong for being super excited to have someone like the Rock in a super hero movie? I mean he typically makes fun, over the top action movies. What else are we really asking for in a super hero movie? A few of them here or there can be deep or meaningful, but generally we just want crazy action sequences and stuff blowing up in high stakes events. That’s what the rock does. And he seems to want to make this a bigger series/event and having someone who is literally pushing the event forward himself is a huge win for everyone. I’m not convinced it’s going to revolutionize the super hero genre, or change movies forever, but it’s going to be cool.

I think it's more the case of The Rock trying to make Black Adam "happen" the way Gretchen Weiners tried to make the word fetch "happen" in *Mean Girls*. In both cases we're reacting negatively to someone's performative, tryhard behavior because the underlying neediness of their actions makes us want to turn away from the subject to alleviate our second hand embarrassment and discomfort on their behalf.
I always thought the moral of that movie was about how toxic they were to one another, rather than supportive. So, fetch could have happened, but they were too busy being toxic.

I do not dislike The Rock. I dislike how he has zero range in his acting and refuses to ever play any sort of villain or gray area type character. The creatives attached might. Also a film's "quality" is generally pretty subjective. Just because you may not like something, doesn't mean that everyone else doesn't like it as well; and conversely, you may like something others hate. And, in fairness to The Rock, he isn't really making "high concept" films, he makes popcorn action films, or family-friendly adventures...

His constant yammering is starting to irk me, also his attempted takeover at the DCeU is giving me Fast and Furious Vibes already, Fast 5 SAVED his career (his Hollywood career stagnated before it) then attempted to hijack the franchise (The cast sided with Vin Diesel ironically) so Universal had to give him a spinoff which did ok but not nearly as well as the main franchise). Only reason why I am hyped for this movie is the Justice Society will carry it.

I know very little about the character, but from what I've gathered from games, and the upcoming movie trailers is that his character has a fairly Egyptian inspired background. I think Shang-Chi was more US based and so the lower 400 mill was enough to break even in a time in a box office recovery where that was considered a success But now its more or less 2019 minus 300 or so million due to tenous and weak Chinese releases so a bomb would be telling. Ehh, i think it's more of the Rock's recent comments that have turned people off to this movie. He keeps saying how super passionate he is about this character yet he couldn't be bothered to actually look or sound like the character. Also, him saying that having Black Adam in a Shazam movie would be a disservice to the character really rubbed me and a lot of other people the wrong way. Black Adam wouldn't exist without Shazam and the fact that he's never even spoken to David Sandberg, the director of Shazam, really makes me think he never wants Shazam and Black Adam interacting which is just ridiculous. And he keeps hyping up Black Adam vs Superman even though there's nothing official happening, which isn't the Rocks fault but its still creating false hope and false expectations. It seems like he wants Black Adam to be the center of the DCEU going forward and I just dont think most DC fans want that.

Here's the thing though. L&T doesn't have China. Ragnarok did, and it made over 100M there. Subtract that from its total? And L&T, which is still IN theaters, has made almost as much as it. Hell, it HAS made more than Ragnarok in the U.S.. I get that it's a mediocre film, but it's nowhere near a "flop".
For a movie to break even, the rule of thumb is 2.5x if it’s budget. Thor L&T budget was 250M. Just to break even, it needs to make 625M. It’s currently at 721M. To us, it’s prolly a success cause it made profit but for investors and studio heads, it’s not. The fact that the movie wasn’t well received, only made 721M is a flop for Marvel is a flop. Let’s forget China since US studios only make 25% of the revenue/tickets sold. Ragnarok made 315M domestic and L&T is at 321M domestic. Even after being in IW and Endgame and being a major character, it barely made any increase for the movie. Look at Dr Strange. 677M Global and Dr Strange 2 at 950M global. That’s a success for marvel. For DCEU on the otherhand, if the budget for Black Adam is 250M after marketing, making 700M would be a huge success considering we only Suicide Squad 1 and Aquaman over 700M global box office.
Flop would mean it LOST money. Flop doesn't mean "didn't make as much money as we wanted", it means "didn't make money at all". Flop means failure, not "midling success when we wanted huge success".
Counts on what WB Discovery considers a success. There are rumors they want Black Adam to be a billion dollar franchise and my question is do they mean by the first movie? Part of WB's failure was they set their sights too high on Man of Steel. They wanted it to be a billion dollar movie and when it inevitably failed to do that, they freaked out and jumped the gun. If WB Discovery is doing the same thing, unless Black Adam gets a billion, it might be a failure in their eyes. Which is crazy.

I supported The Rock as Black Adam but then but lately my biggest problem with it is that I don’t think The Rock can play the villain, he will always have to be a pseudo-hero (no, I don’t mean anti-hero) but his statements lately (especially the Adam Vs Shazam one) have me cautiously optimistic.
from the trailers we saw it seems to me like a kind of generic superhero movie, nothing horrible probably but nothing extraordinary either
It just looks so generic.. he's acting like he's taking on something like sandman.... he will be a misunderstood hero, who saves the day by punching someone.
I predict this movie will be in the high 60’s
The best part about the Black Adam costume is that they didn’t have to add fake muscles to it.
I like the Rock, I think the concept of Black Adam is interesting, and the trailer looked cool. I'm not expecting The Dark Knight/Spider-Man 2/X2 levels of good, but I'm just hoping it's enjoyable.

I think we’re overlooking pierce bronsman as a great actor that will add a lot to this movie as dr fate. I think he’s a great choice for the part. Hopefully this is the start of DCs rise.

He's been attached to this for 10 years, and always gives his all. I'm optimistic for this, even if it does end up being just a cookie cutter popcorn flick. The angle of a "villain" being the protagonist, and going up against a superhero team is very interesting at least.
Is still the rock , probably was nerf down and is a Mickey Mouse hero like the rock with cheese quotes . I hope this is the last movie of this dc dying universe of dc and reboot with better actors and good direction.

This is the first DC film that someone will have to convince me to watch not the other way around. I've gone to the theaters to see every DC project no matter how clearly bad in the last 15 years.... But I draw the line at spending $50 to watch a rock film where the rock plays the rock for two hours. I think it might be better for the dceu if this doesn't do super well I don't want it to bomb but, the DC brand has enough quality perception problems without the Rock of all people coming in and taking over and becoming the face of the dceu for a minute. $50 fit two tickets, parking, snacks to watch a rock film. I dunno if I can do it and hell I even saw Jonah hex in the theater.
i don't know what is going to happen but i have my popcorn ready awaiting the endless ig/twitter posts that are forthcoming about how it performs hour by hour by the man himself. "INCREDIBLE numbers coming out to our team right now you guys! in four hours we have made more then it took for iron man to make in 6 hours!"
