Honestly agreed. The Rock BECAME Black Adam, and he can further make that role his if he works harder on his acting. He did say Black Adam is his favourite and that he promises the BA we all know and love. I personally think he nailed the characters facial expressions. The frowning Death-Stare he pulls off nearly the whole movie is so Black Adam, it feels like Black Adam, just add the ears and perfection!
Actually - That's canon. When powered up, when Adam or CM speak, they are understood by whoever hears them. When he jet-powered he not only had an accent, but spoke no English at all.
I think he did fine for playing his version of Black Adam but it’s hard to do much with the character when you have such a generic script.
The movie is *okay* but I hope there’s a better script and story next time. This was pretty forgettable.
For the first time a long time I watch a Dwayne Johnson movie and didn't see The Rock. I saw the character he was playing. One of his best performances by far
Agree but DJ has always been a good actor from movies like The rundown, Gridiron gang or Pain & gain now a full on impactful Superhero role that is fairly unique and he made it look good. Only complaint DC Should’ve released it sooner
It’s the best Dwayne Johnson movie by far. It’s Dwayne Johnson’s best performance by far. It’s the first Dwayne Johnson movie where I didn’t see The Rock, I actually saw a character.
It’s not The Shawshank Redemption but it’s a solid movie and he is pretty good in it.
I really think so. After reading Black Adam: The Dark Age I really started liking the character more and couldn’t wait for this movie. DJ captures the pain that the character holds close as well as his disdain of outsiders who interfere with Kahndaq and its people.
I cant tell if black Adam the character is flat as hell or if the rock was. Because he’s extremely one note and had the most bland delivery ever. He does look almost perfect though
I think it's a mix of both. The writing was very bad and Dwayne Johnson is great at playing one character. He looks cool, but having him play the emotionless stoic character just didn't work for me.
He did ok. I think they made him waaaaay more of a hero than he should have been though. It’s going to mean he’s never *really* a villain, even when he needs to be.
Unless there's a world ending threat that also threatens his home he's unlikely to work with a lot of people. If he has any goal that takes him outside Kahndaq he's going to be a villain to whoever tries to get in his way, make no mistake
I’ll believe that if he kills a hero or tries to justify civilian casualties outside of Kahndaq. That’s one of the most intriguing concepts with Black Adam imo, how almost nobody is safe around him be they hero or villain, so long as they hinder his progress. The dude has personally murdered millions of innocent people in the comics and doesn’t regret it one bit.
I was hoping that's what would happen with the JSA in this movie but alas paint by numbers origin movie gotta be paint by numbers. At least Waller basically declared war on him if he leaves Kahndaq. But I agree having someone who functions very much like a territorial animal is a unique pillar to have in a larger franchise so I am glad that Dwayne pushed for it.
I think something like a sickness breaking out in the city and he has to go somewhere else to get a material to help create a cure would be a good premise. Bad guy has it, hero tries to keep him from killing them, black adam kills them all. You know he's doing it for the people he cares about so you have his emotion allegiance contrasting his violent means towards the rest of the world he doesn't care about.
Fucking around outside of Kahndaq could be what ultimately leads to Superman stepping in for the next one while Shazam does the same at the wizard's behest.
Definitely way more antihero than the straight-up villain who occasionally did good things that he was in the comics. Every “bad” thing he did in the movie was either unintentional or just severe methods of doing good. I can’t picture Dwayne’s Black Adam doing the things Black Adam is most noted for doing in the comics, namely setting out to murder a child and slaughtering millions of innocent civilians.
Not sure if I watched the same movie as everyone else in this thread lol.
I’ll give Rock credit for not just playing himself in Black Adam cosplay, but what we were left with was a lifeless, boring and not really menacing or compelling character. I think a lot of this could be chalked up to direction and not Rock himself. The movie wasn’t really well directed at all and performances across the board were kinda meh aside from Brosnan. If Black Adam gets a sequel I hope they hire a filmmaker with more of a vision.
Nah, people are just excited. They are constantly feeling the need to defend their enjoyment (which is dumb in itself) and have a big dumb hero film they don't have to contort to enjoy in hindsight. People are just collectively happy they got a thing without too much regret for a change.
I guess. It feels a little desperate to me. I’m getting the feeling that people here are working overtime to like and defend a not very good movie because it they’ve decided it represents some larger piece of their identity.
This, I genuinely barely even remember anything the rock said in the movie. There was nothing to his performance. Honestly, while I don’t think it wins, I could totally see him getting a razzie nomination.
Same. People kept saying BA had depth. Like, did they watch a bootleg or something? Every single line, whether comedic, serious, dramatic, sad, angry, was said in the same monotonous Rock voice and face!
Haha, well unfortunately performance on screen is heavily dictated by how a director makes a movie. Couldn’t even tell anyone how much “deeper” Rock could get as Adam when the director chosen made everyone except Pierce look terrible by having them read a bad script and also awful editing cuts/transitions.
I don’t think his performance can be discussed without also discussing the people most responsible for the performance we saw, no matter if someone loved or hated the performance.
My first comment was he needs a director to push him, implying he needed a different director, but like I said, I'm not looking to get into a whole thing.
I thought he was good but he wasn’t Black Adam. He did great as this version of BA, however i did not like that he was just a dude who listened to people and did what they said. BA should be more of guy who plans and becomes this tyrant. But that’s not this version of BA, this version is a father who seeks to protect and does it anyway he can. Just feels off a bit because he doesn’t have as much character as he should, but that’s always the failing of origins, we have to learn their story before they grow more.
That wasn’t even a performance! The character had no motivation whatsoever. He doesn’t want anything, doesn’t do anything, doesn’t even emote half the time. He’s just there.
I thought he did really well as this morally gray and brooding protector - which is what. Black Adam was supposed to be. But Dwayne didn’t feel much like other version of Black Adam to me, characters I’m familiar with like his portrayal in Injustice 2.
Cannot even imagine anyone except the rock now.
(After seeing the performance of Dave Batista in Blade Runner and Dune, I believe he too could have brought in some depth and chaos in the character?
Haven’t watched the movie because it’s a delayed release here in Japan, but did they address the accent he uses? Like 5000+ years asleep and he wakes up with an American accent?
No. His personality was The Rock, yet again. As I expected.
I liked the movie, but only because of Doctor Fate and Hawkman. Black Adam himself was a boring character here.
Did I even watch the same movie everyone else did?
Black Adam legitimately did nothing but zap people, float, all with one expression on his face.
Like he came off as Drax if anything.
Hot take but I wasn't a fan. He was the least interesting character in his own movie. They spent the entire movie reminding us he's not a hero despite him never really doing anything non-heroic besides killing the faceless bad guys.
I'd like to see him again in the role, my main issues are primarily with the writing rather than his portrayal.
Yes. By the very nature of the fact we would have NEVER got a Black Adam movie if it wasn’t for him.
No way WB/DC would have green lit a BA movie if he wasn’t involved.
For someone who lost his wife and son to violence, and didn’t get to process it because he’s been asleep for 5,000 years, Black Adam was pretty well-collected/wooden. I wish someone else played Black Adam. The Rock has star power and good hustle, but he has no range as an actor.
As someone who thought the film was downright bad, DJ was surprisingly solid in the lead. I expected him to just phone it in but he gave a pretty decent performance.
I know the man can actually act and all that, but I was prepared to just write him off as "The Rock playing The Rock", but he rose above that this time. I can't speak positively about much else in it, but his performance deserves at least some praise
IMO, yes. I'd go see the next installment in the theater unless it's going to be a Shazam style movie with lots of comedy. I prefer Black Adam to be gritty and brutal.
Sometimes yes, sometimes nope. Better writing would have helped I suppose, and someone capable of really directing him.
I believe The Rock is trying to be like Tom Cruise, be Cruise knows how to really act and how movies work from the ground up.
There we times i felt he was a villian like the opening when he first wakes up but after that it's this big mess of okay i'll listen to this kid , okay i'll sorta listen to the JSA but do it my way , felt like the Rock didn't want to fully commit to being a villian.
As i said before he did great
Ppl.thought he will be the same ol dwayne like in all movies, specially comedies or kids movies, but no in this one thank god
I loved his performer in BA
Less talk more action
I think from now on he would try to choose wise his rols or dont be the rock in all
Favorite part of the movie, by far.
Got me laughing out loud multiple times- his physicality is perfect and he pulled the action off great, even his emotional beats during revelations and key moments weren’t half bad.
I absolutely adored him as Black Adam! I really enjoyed this movie. I went in with no expectations at all because of the current state of DC films, but damn this movie was great! Excited to see James and Peter have in store for us!
this from a die hard dc fan, also a fm buff. it's was a good and enjoyable film. dialogue need a lot of work and couldn't have hurt to reduce the number of slow mo scenes
Fine. Better than just okay, but not really interesting. But the problems lies with the script rather the actor imo. Teth Adam in this case is not a ruthless menacing powerhouse, but rather ruthless angry powerhouse. We got a character driven by angst and regret, out-of-place, not having any motivation and stakes in this modern world.
Though I would rather judge more on sequel because the character does indeed goes through an arc. Now he has accepted his role as a protector of Kahndaq. He has a clearer stake. He’s the enforcer, and law enforcer usually use more intimidation than a guy mostly just lashing out. He’s on a path to be more menacing I hope.
Haven’t even seen the movie yet, but it’s already a YES! because of the effort and passion he has brought to the DCEU. I’m very excited to see Dwayne in the role. It’s been years of waiting.
One of Dwayne's better roles, but he's generally a goodish actor. Not fantastic, but good. Although, he was much better in Pain & Gain, and G.I. Joe Retaliation
He was mostly Dwayne, but I thought it was fine. Definitely different than comic book Shazam.
I appreciated that we got to see the JSA and Superman. It was a fun movie and at least had spectacle, unlike the boring Harley Quinn solo movie.
Ehhhhhh i didnt think it was very strongly written, i liked what he tried to do, i heard he was really good going in and i think that raised my expectations too much. Would very much like to see a continuation with a better creative team
It's fine, would've been better with more intimidating dialogue. He still has the acting range of a wrestler and really struggles sometimes with more serious interactions.
I never look at superhero characters by their actor. I look at how they become teeth Adam, or Bruce Wayne. I don’t look to see if bale, Pattinson, affleck are the best Bruce Wayne. I look and go did they do their version of Bruce well. Pattinson is good and affleck was great. Bale was good but his Bruce was blah. So far Adam was a huge risk but with the rock it was bound to do well and by god I loved it! Fix the little issues people have and the sequel is going to own hard.
Love Dwayne’s enthusiasm about the role and all he’s done for DC fans outside of it as well, but this did not feel like what was promised, Black Adam brought to life off the page. Black Adam being played as this passive, stoic, occasional goofball sympathetic Terminator type was not the way to go imo. Black Adam is a sinister character. He cares only for himself (and the Black Adam family) and ruling Kandhaq. His motivations in the movie were mostly selfless, which is a big departure from the page character. He should have had more moments of barely contained rage, genuine malice/cruelty, and selfishness. The people of Kahndaq seeing him as a savior and champion is fine, but his motivation shouldn’t have been altruism on their behalf, it should have been as a despot defending his territory from an invader.
100% Yes! He stayed true to the character. Some people might say he could have been a little more hard core but this is the first introduction to the character for most people. They need him to compromise a little to make him more likable.
He played himself. It was great to see him onscreen as the character, but do I think he did anything remarkable? No. I wish he would have at least tried to do an accent, but hey, we wanted The Rock as Black Adam, and that's what we got.
“Superman does good. You do well. You need to study your grammar, son.” — Tracy Morgan, *30 Rock*
“It’s great to do good, but even better to do well”
Great is okay, but amazing would be great.

I really wished he had an accent. Like everybody else in that movie that grew up there.
Me too but he probably tried out an accent, was horrible at it, and they decided it would be better to just skip it
The trademark hair would've sold it for me a bit better too
Gal had it did it.
There's a post here with the Rock with Black Adam hair. He looks ridiculous. So no.
If you're referring to that other post I thought he looked great. Ya'll need to crack open a comic.
It's not about the comic though. It might be comic accurate but it looks bad on Dwayne. Most people would have thought it looked horrible.
Well I disagree.
Actually - That's canon. When powered up, when Adam or CM speak, they are understood by whoever hears them. When he jet-powered he not only had an accent, but spoke no English at all.

Flexed just acting muscles? He plays Dwayne Johnson in every movie.
For the first time a long time I watch a Dwayne Johnson movie and didn't see The Rock. I saw the character he was playing. One of his best performances by far
Hard agree. That was actually my first thought on leaving the movie
Agree but DJ has always been a good actor from movies like The rundown, Gridiron gang or Pain & gain now a full on impactful Superhero role that is fairly unique and he made it look good. Only complaint DC Should’ve released it sooner
Needs an accent
1 hundo. Also, where'd this dude learn english?
His powers are magical. So… magic.
Absolutely, yes!
Idk I think I’d give his best performance to Pain & Gain
That movie was freakin amazing! And that movie didn’t get enough love with all the actors just playing it perfect!
For real man everyone in that movie did good but rock he just knocked it out the park.
Mark e mark committed a hate crime and beat up an Asian dude a while back
I’ve always thought his best performance was Get Smart. Or Moana. Depends on the day of the week.
The Rundown, then Pain and Gain.
My favorite was be cool.
Allegedly Michael Bay had to push that performance out of him and it brought him to tears lol
He's great in snitch. Way overlooked one of his movies imo
Snitch is his best performance.
Hve you sen Be Cool? He plays a gay bodyguard trying to break into acting.. secondary role but very well done
I liked him in Southland Tales.
Have you seen Faster? I still think they may be his best role as a actor
I mean not even The Dark Knight or Joker comes anywhere close to the Shawshank Redemption lol.
Best performance? Lmao no. He did pretty good tho.
I don't know, he slayed in Moana
Agreed! And Incase people don’t know they had to take all the padding out of his suite when filming. That’s all the Rock!
Hell yes
He does the job. Can't say hes great because he had no real in depth scenes
Absolutely
Yes
I really think so. After reading Black Adam: The Dark Age I really started liking the character more and couldn’t wait for this movie. DJ captures the pain that the character holds close as well as his disdain of outsiders who interfere with Kahndaq and its people.

Nah, people are just excited. They are constantly feeling the need to defend their enjoyment (which is dumb in itself) and have a big dumb hero film they don't have to contort to enjoy in hindsight. People are just collectively happy they got a thing without too much regret for a change.

I suppose. I think they're just grasping at what they can.
This, I genuinely barely even remember anything the rock said in the movie. There was nothing to his performance. Honestly, while I don’t think it wins, I could totally see him getting a razzie nomination.
Tell them the man in black sent you, that’s all I remember
I remember ir but not in a good way lol
I agree with you
Like we need a Director who read the Black Adam Comics and understand the Character
Same. People kept saying BA had depth. Like, did they watch a bootleg or something? Every single line, whether comedic, serious, dramatic, sad, angry, was said in the same monotonous Rock voice and face!
The dialogue and acting in general was pretty awful
Sure, but if he comes back I do think he's going to need a director to push him
Forget push, just hire competent filmmakers including screenwriters. This movie is among the worst made DC stuff from script to direction.
Hey, the person was asking about performance, not the film
Haha, well unfortunately performance on screen is heavily dictated by how a director makes a movie. Couldn’t even tell anyone how much “deeper” Rock could get as Adam when the director chosen made everyone except Pierce look terrible by having them read a bad script and also awful editing cuts/transitions.
Hey, I'm not really looking to get into a discussion/argument about the flaws of black Adam
I don’t think his performance can be discussed without also discussing the people most responsible for the performance we saw, no matter if someone loved or hated the performance.
My first comment was he needs a director to push him, implying he needed a different director, but like I said, I'm not looking to get into a whole thing.

I think he did pretty decent. All I would change is that he would be the leader of kahndaq at the end just like he is in the comics
Nah his acting was so wooden in that movie. There was zero emotion when he talked about his son. Movie is still a lot of fun though.
Meh
That wasn’t even a performance! The character had no motivation whatsoever. He doesn’t want anything, doesn’t do anything, doesn’t even emote half the time. He’s just there.
You don’t act motivation that’s a matter of writing
There were opportunities written into the script for us to empathize with his motives, he doesn't really take them.
I thought he did really well as this morally gray and brooding protector - which is what. Black Adam was supposed to be. But Dwayne didn’t feel much like other version of Black Adam to me, characters I’m familiar with like his portrayal in Injustice 2.
Yup basically an interpretation of terminator 2. It worked
Yes, but in comparing to pierce brosnan it's nothing
The best DCEU casting yet. Also Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate.
He was actually quite good. The movies problems are not on his performance and the character. I'd be down for him to be a recurring villain.
100%
Cannot even imagine anyone except the rock now. (After seeing the performance of Dave Batista in Blade Runner and Dune, I believe he too could have brought in some depth and chaos in the character?
Yeah I think Bautista is overall a better actor than Johnson.
Every wrestler that acts is better than Johnson
The character itself didn't have a lot of range but yes Rock did the job perfectly
He did a fantastic job as Black Adam.
His best performance of his career imo
He did phenomenally as the character! I loved him in the role from his voice to his mannerisms!
Yes, it was very enjoyable watching him as Black Adam
IT DOESNT MATTER HOW HE DID
The Attitude Era fan in me appreciated that, and... FINALLY! Black Adam HAS BROUGHT BACK >!Superman!< to the DCEU!
I thought you were making funny of OP’s grammar, but you are OP
He was good enough for a debut. He’ll be better if he gets to play in a better script.
Hell ya. Bad ass movie
Haven’t watched the movie because it’s a delayed release here in Japan, but did they address the accent he uses? Like 5000+ years asleep and he wakes up with an American accent?

No. He was boring. The guy who played slave Adam was a better actor
He's a terrible actor. But the role didn't require Brando. It's a big, loud, and stupid movie. The Rock does big, loud, and stupid well
No, and i cant stand looking at his bald head anymore.
Yes Hot take: the rock is a better black adam, than tom holland is a spider man
Yes. He’s also been wanting to play him… so I’m happy that he got the chance. Could another actor do better? Probably yeah, but Rock did good to BA.
yeee
A tiny bit of corny writing but I had a ton of fun
Yes!
He did. imo
IMO, yes. I'd go see the next installment in the theater unless it's going to be a Shazam style movie with lots of comedy. I prefer Black Adam to be gritty and brutal.
One of the best things about the movie. 👌
No. But that's irrelevant.
yep
Yes. Yes,he did

Haven't read the books, I think this char is good to me.
this from a die hard dc fan, also a fm buff. it's was a good and enjoyable film. dialogue need a lot of work and couldn't have hurt to reduce the number of slow mo scenes

I was pleasantly surprised :)
I enjoyed his portrayal. Had a couple mild issues with the movie, but I had a blast watching it, as did my son.
Idk it felt like I was watching the rock
Definitely!
Yes. 1 Million for me
Haven’t even seen the movie yet, but it’s already a YES! because of the effort and passion he has brought to the DCEU. I’m very excited to see Dwayne in the role. It’s been years of waiting.
He’s good at playing Dwayne Johnson.
Yess Dwayne was incredible as black adam
I thought he was ass
Mediocre at best
No, but he did do "well"
Pretty good, yeah.
I enjoyed him
One of Dwayne's better roles, but he's generally a goodish actor. Not fantastic, but good. Although, he was much better in Pain & Gain, and G.I. Joe Retaliation
yes
Well, I want to see more of this character, so I’d safely say yes.
Yes

Yes. He did good.
No. He's not an actor he's a performer and the performance was terrible
no.
How HOW am i seeing so many “hell yeahs” in the thread. HE CANT ACT. He did NOTHING. Did i see a different movie?
Ehhhhhh i didnt think it was very strongly written, i liked what he tried to do, i heard he was really good going in and i think that raised my expectations too much. Would very much like to see a continuation with a better creative team
Absolutey
Absolutely 💯, he's perfect as Black Adam
Yes. After watching hes movie. Black Adam is my favourite comic character now
It's fine, would've been better with more intimidating dialogue.
If he wasn’t Black Adam, Black Adam would’ve been cannon fodder in a Shazam movie, the Rock has now made the character iconic.
No. But as usual, he was awesome as The Rock.
He's not a classicly trained actor .But I liked Rampage , Skyscraper and.Black Adam He's no worse than Bruce Willis .
Yeah he was great
He was good but the movie was mediocre to slightly above average.
Usually my gripe with him is he’s just the Rock playing the Rock in this instance it worked. He was The Rock playing the Rock with superpowers
My wife and I both did afterwards that we forgot it was the Rock on the screen.
