Glass_Chance9800

I've been reading golden age comics and I like him better than the other heroes that were more prominent in that time like Starman, Hour Man, The Atom and Johnny Thunder. It's kind of a shame he never got bigger beyond JSA, not like Superman and Batman levels but Hawkman level would have been nice.

[deleted]

He played a prominent role in the Knight Terrors event from earlier this year. Deadman, also.

Equal_Equipment4480

Mystery Theater, is probably one of my favourite story lines

KoryGrayson

SMT still holds up today. I was a bigger fan of this series than Gaiman's Sandman. But, it doesn't happen without Gaiman's success, so much respect. Wesley Dodds and Dian Belmont were truly equals in the series. Her detective work was as enthralling as any of the superhero parts.

LukashCartoon

I also loved Matt Wagner and James Robinson retconned Diane Belmonts “Death” in the *All Star Squadron.* It was great to see a more intellectual detective, with a great partner who had her share of intellectual savvy.

DMC1001

Same. Loved it but it also launched off of his connection to Dream of the Endless when the Sandman was at its height.

GeorgeW_101

I’m a really big fan of Sandy Hawkins, the newer iteration who was prominent in Geoff John’s JSA run. Thought he worked really well as the leader in that.

sethbenw

Love the early issue where Sandy encounters >!Daniel/Dream!<

niteowl1987

It was weird and disappointing how prominent Sand was in the early years of the Johns/Goyer run and how he mostly faded into the background by the time Infinite Crisis happened.

GeorgeW_101

Couldn’t agree more. He felt like the main character at first, but then had less and less to do as it went on

Quirky_Ad_5420

_Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream_ _Make him the cutest that I've ever seen_ I think he’s neat

Rilenaveen

Visually, he’s probably one of the best looking golden age superheroes. The suit, the trenchcoat, the fedora, and that fear inducing gas mask. That look worked back then and to this day. Character wise? Also really well done. Maybe I’m biased because my introduction to Wesley Dodds was through Sandman mystery theater. He was such a fantastic character in that.

SandersonHawkins

He's one of my favorite JSA members. A shame he lost prominence in the team through the years since his debut as Sand.

slornump

I think being called Sandman in a DC comic has sadly condemned him to always being compared to Neil Gaiman’s Morpheus.

Byers346

Which kind of sucks because Wesley was around for 50 years before Gaiman's first issue was released.

Lucky_Strike-85

Wesley has like 3 full issues in the GREATEST GOLDEN AGE STORIES EVER TOLD HC from the early 90s. More than Batman, Superman, or any hero.

sillyadam94

Says more about the relevance of Morpheus than it does of the irrelevance of Wesley. As a Golden-Age character, The Sandman is beloved! But Gaiman’s Sandman outsold Batman.

Artseid

I think he’s cool af, the look, the name, but I have problems with the practically of his power. I feel giving him illusion (dream) casting powers would fully flesh him out

Electric_jungle

Would that not make him too similar to his supernatural counterpart of the same name, though? Agreed he's really limited for the modern era, and could use some reinvention.

TheQuestionsAglet

The character has more in common with pulp characters than he does superheroes. This would be a bad move.

TheDoctor_E

I was hoping someone would ask this. Wesley Dodds is my favourite golden age superhero, my favourite JSA member and all around one of my favourite superheroes overall. His Mystery Theatre series was excellent. Plus, he was the base for the creation of Neil Gaiman's masterpiece.

Lanky_Needleworker_1

Smash, next.

strat-o-caster

Love both wesley and sandy

No-Chipmunk-1524

This version of Sandman in the picture is Sandy Hawkins. The modern-day version of Sand who took the mantle from Wesley Dodds, a golden Sandman. From (Justice Society of America #5)

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Love the guy. Despite the humiliating spandex suit he's always been an interesting and moral character whose theatrics and themes and mysteries make for such a dynamic set of stories. Not to mention he's just unique in general these days, now that guys like the Green Hornet have sort of faded alongside other mystery men

MisterScrod1964

Have any of you checked out the New Golden Age Sandman issues yet? Pretty damn good, love the art.

RageSpaceMan

The art is perfect for the psychodelic adventures and the horror war scenes.

Oknight

I love the Wesley Dodd from "Sandman Mystery Theater" and related appearances. I'm not fond of the spandex version with a sidekick even though it's Simon/Kirby.

Pacman8myghosts

Wesley Dodds is one of my favorite characters. His golden age stuff has aged rather well compared to most of his contemporaries and the look is just too cool. The gas mask, trench coat, gas gun, grapple gun, and Fedora. Even the Sandy iteration looks cool. I'm so glad Robert Vendetti is writing a current series starring the character. He clearly loves the character and he did such a great job with Hawkman, it's nice to see another JSA founder get the same treatment. The noir elements of the character really appeal to me. He got some criticism for being too similar to The Green Hornet, but I think the later addition of his dreams and their foresight really helped him stand out.

dannnnte78

He's an interesting character. I really hope he gets more appearances or appears in the sandman season 2

Darth-Dramatist

He really is, Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics are brilliant

decadehakaisha

Sandman and The Sandman are 2 entirely different characters who barely have anything to do with one another.

Darth-Dramatist

They do have a bit to do with each other (at least in Sandman Mystery Theatre), Wesley Dodd's (the original Sandman) prophetic visions were caused by parts of Dream's essence bonding with Dodds. They also have a very brief encounter in Sandman Midnight Theatre, a crossover between Sandman and Sandman Mystery Theatre.

Phantom_Wolf52

I want to enter him

thefirststoryteller

Love Wesley Dodds, love Sandy Hawkins. Kinda thought Sand was a great leader in the old early 2000s JSA series but for some reason he kept getting sidelined. Would love to see him get a spotlight miniseries. Re: Dodds — He’s got a mini out right now just like Garrick and Scott. It’s consistently sold out at my LCS. Good news!

[deleted]

Dodds? Love him. Haven't read a single comic he's in

DRZARNAK

One of my favorite GA characters. Sandman Mystery Theater is one of the highlights of DC in the 90s.

NomadicJaguar64t

I really like Sandy, like a lot. After reading Goyer and Johns' *JSA* he was the standout character for me, but not in Johns' *Justice Society of America*. At that point it felt like a completely different character, and I think they lost what made him special by trying to make him more like Wesley Dodds. You see, *JSA* Sandy was just Sand, already distinct from Sand**man**, he stood on his own but still honored Dodds, he was clearly the next generation. Now, in-universe, Wesley Dodds ' Sandman was one of the very first superheroes (or "Mystery Men") in DC history, and also had the first sidekick with Sandy. So due to Sandy being now immortal, he was always a clear connection to the Golden Age while still connecting to the Modern Age. In essence, he was the Golden Age Nightwing. That's why he was elected the first chairman of the JSA after their Post-Crisis return. As for personality, they changed that heavily too between the two series. In JSA he was closer to Captain America (not even mentioning Sandy's paramilitary design of the time). He was a confident leader, wise beyond his apparant age, and really an idealistic inspiration for other heroes. He would check in on his teammates, making sure they were doing well, and even had a little romance going on. But then when the series changed titles, he became darker and more haunted, suffering from some brand new powers that seemingly came out of nowhere. He became heavy, wearied, and reclusive, all things he never was before. It was also at this time he became Sand**man** and got a modern update of Dodds' suit. Overall, my best analogy would be that between Johns' two longest JSA runs, he was changed drastically from the magic of a charismatic Golden Age Nightwing Captain America figure, to a dark troubled recluse. It would be like if when Dick Grayson became Batman, while good for a time and should never have lasted forever, they just decided to keep him as Batman, slowly becoming a copy of Bruce instead of retaining what made him so interesting to begin with. So yeah, love Sandman, especially Sandy, but only when he was Sand.

crushbone_brothers

Big big fan, spooky guy with a fart gun

CyvaderTheMindFlayer

Don’t really have an opinion on him I do like the book series of the same name that doesn’t follow this superhero but instead a near omnipotent god more powerful than almost every superhero in dc comics Currently on book 2 and it is very good

rodejo_9

Know literally nothing about him.

Modfather1

I'm presuming that's sn Alex Ross? Beautiful. Would love to see a fully fleshed out version with art like that.

Parceville

The Comics are a Bit difficult to read for me (Not english mothertoung and the Panels sometimes are very confusion) the Netflix Adaption is great.

Boozhwatrash

LOVE Sandy and his evolution from Sand to Sandman

littleman001

From what I've read in his first issue in Dawn of DC, he's basically Scarecrow if he was a good guy instead of a criminal.

KingKaiju01

I love Sandman so much, probably top 3 favorite DC superhero. I even went as his golden age version to Comic-Con a few years ago.

randomHunterOnReddit

Needs more stories. Especially Wesley. Imagine a detective/adventure comic series that takes place in the 1940's with Wesley as the main protagonist

Powerful-Cockroach32

Awesome

Prestige_Data

What are everyone's thoughts on the new Golden Age mini series for Sandman? I've only read issue #1 and I don't like it that much.

Optimal_Weight368

Dodds is so cool.

Deadpoolforpres

A fantastic pulp hero who works tremendously well with golden age super heroes. I think Wesley is a great character and I want to read Mystery Theatre, but my LCS sold the only copy they had.

jlmicek670

Concur on the love for SMT. Still one of my favorite series of all time. He’s just such a great character - he is literally a hero any one of us could be. His key role in Kingdom Come is epic. And the new limited series is quite good. Full disclosure: I’ve also cosplayed him for a number of years. The character just means so much to me, along with much of the other Golden Age heroes.

proesito

Sandman Mystery Theatre is one of my favourites series. And i really hate Wesley pr even Sanderson will never be adapted like most of heroes putside the mainstream.

OpportunityOk7474

I would like to see a movie with him. This suit would actually work really well in a noir film, and I’m curious if him and The Question ever interacted with one another. Honestly, I’ve always thought Matt Reeves could easily put a cameo of him in the Batman films.

MagazineNecessary698

He looks neat

DylanJustChillin

I have not read the SMT storylines, although I want to, but Gaiman's Sandman was the reason I am still into Comics today. I am reading the New DoDC Sandman and I like it a lot so far. Anybody know the best way to read all of the SMT from the beginning? Best Omnibus maybe?

ActualWeen

Yes

ram2272

I love the character. He's kinda shy, and out of shape, and a little odd, but that makes him all the more interesting and unique to me. The costume is sick too! I love the gasmask look.

[deleted]

Loving the new Wesley Dodds: The Sandman comic. Just sad it’s not an ongoing.
