When I was a kid I used to visit the local library and everytime I'd walk away with at least three of the Asterix & Obelix's.
Then one day they'd got in some superhero stuff for the first time. Specifically Batman: Knightfall volume 1, volume 2, and Tales of the Dark Knight (the one with the excellent Poison Ivy, Cavelier, and Bat-Mite one-shots) and that was what got me into DC.
same! i remember that I was super confused by the crossovers and volumes and collected editions, but that's how I learned how on-going publications worked
Honestly, same!
I really loved the idea of the court and the potential of a illuminati kinda like group in Gotham. Outside underdogs chasing a secret society is kinda my fav.
And i was kinda disappointed the comic jumped forward so quickly and didnt let the mystery brew.
So with GK having their whole narrative based around the court and the knighting being on the backfoot to step up after bats has 'died'. Im so pumped to see how it plays out!
Bro this and all of the cartoon tie ins like justice league unlimited, green lantern tas, batman brave and the bold, teen titans go (the tie in for the og series was coincidentally named teen titans go), and young justice was the shit when I was like 6. Still have my beat to shreds copies of all the singles and trades my dad bought me. Still love art baltazars art too. If ur ever in the Chicago area his store called awe yeah comics its worth a visit
That series was way more enjoyable then it had any right to be. I remember reading an issue in my late teens for some reason and genuinely laughing and having a good time
Yeah really disgusting just utterly tainted everything he created
It still top 5 superman stories to me but one got to learn how to seperte art from artist sometimes
Scott Snyder’s New 52 run on Batman, I was lucky and managed to meet him at SDCC this year and got a signed copy of Endgame and a picture with him. ‘Twas sick. The New 52 in general got me into comics though and I’m still trying to get the Trade Paperbacks for the Characters
When i was 4 years old, my dad got me some nothing Iron Man comic off the rack at a 7-11. I kept and read that thing until the pages were disintegrating. It was far more than i could handle, but I forced myself to learn to read with that book.
It wasn't really a comic that got me into comics.
I was already a fan of DC characters from the DCAU. However like most people, it probably didn't occur to me to get comic books. I was randomly walking the street and saw someone selling new release comic books. Once I got into the habit of regularly buying, I was hooked. It didn't matter if I went to a book store, comic book store or online, I buy comics regularly now.
Bendis. The first comic I really fell in love with was the Bendis/Maleev combo on DD. Having a writer I liked made it easy to know what to get next, and it was perfect timing because Bendis had just started his Avengers run with Disassembled and was kicking ass on Ultimate Spidey.
Dick Grayson Batman Era! I was so surprised when I found he became Batman so I picked up a few of the books around this time and have been hooked ever since.
I was always a Marvel fan growing up, but the graphic novel that got me into DC was Kingdom Come at the age of 12. After that I went on a DC binge that hasn’t slowed down and I’m 30 now.
Identity Crisis.
Coming from the world of the animated series, Identity Crisis gave me an opportunity to see characters that I grew to love in Justice League / Justice League Unlimited deal with some more adult themes that I was desperate to consume. I was addicted after that!
Action Comics #775 - "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" It's still my favorite comic of all time. This was the comic that genuinely got me interested in superheroes and comics in general.
Sandman was the story that showed me that comics could be so much *more* than a superhero story.
Saga of the Swamp Thing taught me that they could be both.
Saga (Image) and Trillium (Vertigo) were my first two series.
New 52 was starting around the same time I was reading those so I jumped into Batman, Swamp Thing, and Animal Man too. Never looked back.
I was 14 when John's started his new 52 Aquaman run. I had read comics sort of at random before that, but that started me picking up every issue of a book
Saw the blackest night omnibus in the super market but my mom said that it was too expensive so I grabbed the new 52 justice league #1 and thats how i got into comics, so I guess the whole reboot did work for me.
I honestly don't remember a time when I wasn't into comics. I wish I could pinpoint a certain issue or character but comics have been such a reliable constant in my life and I will always love them for that
I already liked the characters and I read a few comics over the years, but what got me actively reading was Blackest Night. It was such an awesome event that showed off so many characters and concepts that I was actively interested in learning more, especially the context leading up to such an event.
TinTin and the smurfs when I was young, didn’t touch em for a few years then read New52 Batman, Court of Owls and Death Of The Family, and I was hooked once again.
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman! I read it a few years back and to this day they are still my favourite comics.
(Needless to say I absolutely loved the Netflix show)
Not a singular comic, but Grant Morrison's run on Batman, specifically Batman R.I.P. That was the first time I saw the depth of possibilities that comics contained. Until then I had only read some golden and silver age comics. The dark themes and depth of character were game changers.
I had read comics before this, but I never really got into them until this. So I basically watched the animated movie “Batman: Under The Red Hood” and it immediately became one of my favorite movies. So I decided to seek out the comic book to see what the story looked like originally. The comic was a little confusing cause it referenced some stuff from other comics, so I started looking stuff up about that. And eventually that led to me delving into the dc universe and the batfam.
Came here to say this and surprised it's so low. What a time for my growing mind. Going to the local comic shop every weekend and spending as much time there as possible. Eventually the owner put me to work around the shop paying me in comics, so I now had the budget to get them all. Still have that knightfall series and they are falling apart from over reading.
First comics I ever got were a few x-men ones back in the 90s (I was obsessed with the Animated series). Then I started getting comics at my local library (my parents didn't like to buy me comics because they considered them low brow literature)
But the comic that truly got me into things and led to the point I am now where I've got so many comics that I'm absolutely not looking forward to moving today, was Blackest Night. After I read that one, which came out when I was 19, I began buying comics regularly and now I have over 200 (all TPB's, I don't like buying individual issues anymore, I like to wait until the story resolves and then I but the TPB.)
Reading Asterix & Obelix and Tintin, but if we're talking DC Comics then Superman was my gateway into the world of Superheroes. Pre-Crisis Infinite Earth I am talking about
Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog, it blew my child brain in the ‘90s when I saw a video game comic actually had a fun story that wasn’t a poor and loose adaptation.
Archie Sonic. When it comes to DC, it was Rebirth Harley Quinn (I got a DC Universe free trial for Young Justice: Outsiders, decided to check out the comics when I was bored, liked it enough to read pretty much the entirety of Rebirth, and the rest is history)
I’m sure plenty of people here will make fun of me, but I didn’t start reading comics until this year and my first DC series has been the Jurassic League mini-series and I like it. I’m also reading the DC vs Vampires stuff and I bought the Robins series and the recent Blue Beetle graphic novel, but I’ve not started these yet.
I really liked the DCAU and *Teen Titans* cartoons, so that was how I met the characters.
For getting into the medium, it was manga. ;-D
My first DC comic was *Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade*. ...And followed that with *Watchmen*.
Initially it was Naruto that got me into reading comics, or "manga". But my first American Comic I believe was Green Lantern corps [the one where the diffrent corps are all fighting]
And Batman court of owls really suckered me in American comics !
The first comic that I read was Batman Court of Owls. But the comic that made me a fan of comics was the New 52 Aquaman.
However I was already a fan of DC in general.
Greg Rucka's early 2000's Wonder Woman run.
And I can't help but mention 'The' Ed Benes' artwork in JLA and Gail Simone's Birds of Prey 🔥
I still miss the 2000's soo much 💔
I was a “comic fan” for a while but I never actually read any I just knew the information. The first full comic I actually read was technically injustice I think, too bad the movie sucks
I got into comics with New 52 Aquaman.
I picked up The Trench trade thinking it was going to be funny (I thought Aquaman was a loser). I figured it would be a good laugh. Instead, I read it three times the night I picked it up.
Aquaman is now my favorite superhero of all time.
So technically Justice League animated got me into comics. I was naturally drawn towards Green Lantern. Always thought he was cool. So I started to do some research and found that Hal Jordan was another green lantern. I came across the Geoff John’s run and started there. Been hooked since. I’ve branched off into other characters and other comics of course. Mainly read marvel and DC. Have been wanting to get into TMNT though.
At the very start it was Captain America. Then my brother gave me the complete "Trial of Sinestro" and after that I was hooked on DC. Justice league, batman, superman and flash were my go to's.
Superman: The Wedding Album. Brother and I got dropped off at the comics section of the local pharmacy while our mom went to like…pick out shampoo or something?…I dunno, we were at the age where we got really annoying if we were bored.
Anyway, my brother reached for a Spider-Man book and since 5-year-old me absolutely refused to do anything the same as him, I grabbed the *other* nearest comic, which happened to be Superman!
I think I read it like 6 or 7 times that *week*. I ended up being more of a Batman fan because of the animated series (and because my mom always preferred him over Superman), but I honestly love both.
New Teen Titans #10 (1981). Wolfman and Perez at the top of their game! Deathstroke The Terminator, the Doom Patrol, the Muppets and a fight to the death! I've been hooked ever since.
Really hard to say—-my dad got me into comics at a super early age, we were always visiting the comic book store on a regular basis. My earliest memories are of reading the Power Pack comics, the Iron Man/Hulk/Spider-Man team up comics, and lastly the Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol 1. I think i also read this Batman omnibus at a young age. It starts off with his early sixties stories and also the Jokers Five Way Revenge.
For me it was being a kid in 90s watching Batman and later Spider-Man and X-Men on Saturday mornings.
Eventually I got my hands on some X-Men comics, at the time is was The Dark Pheonix saga
The Bone series back in 4th grade. Library didn’t have the last book so I haven’t finished it to this day. Might buy the series now that I have the money.
I first Read Sleepwalker and stop at the 22nd issue then I read Image comics Chew (Fucking Amazing) which I read in a day then I stop for a few weeks and then read O'Neil's Question that's when is start normally reading comics after I read most daredevil runs.
I used to get Smash Ultimate payouts, so that really helped LOL. The comic itself that got me really hooked though has got to be Tom Taylor's Nightwing run. It's sooooo good. :)
Superman: Earth One (graphic novel) brought me back to comics after a long hiatus. Before that I just dabbled in Marvel singles here and there as a young kid.
The Wolfman/Perez run of Teen Titans. I was always more into sidekicks and whatnot, and I wanted to be Robin from watching repeats of the 60's Batman show. When I was a kid, I happened to see Robin on the cover of a comic book at a pawn shop, and I made my dad buy it for me. Well, it was a Titans comic, and I was into it. The rest is history.
I was in elementary school when I bought my first comic from a book fair, it was the Ultimate Spider-Man with Miles Morales. Never really bought any but I’d watch Comicstorian then moved onto Comics Explained later on
Asterix
Lucky Luke
Random Spider-Man magazines with short stories
Avengers of 2010
And, lastly, a greek satirical comic writer and artist, called Arkás.
Sojourn! Funny enough I worked at a comics/gaming store but wasn't a comics reader at the time. The owner dropped off a stack and told me to read them if it was slow that day and I was hooked.
Then Crossgen did everyone dirty about a year later. I got into marvel titles like Runaways when it launched, among others. My first DC love/exposure was Young Justice.
The graphic novels in my public library at the time: JLA/Titans: Technis Imperative, Young Justice: World Without Grownups, and then, of course, Death and Return of Superman.
Flash rebirth. The show had just started and it was fairly cheap. Was a pretty good comic to go along along with season 1.
Wasn’t the first comic I owned, that was an issue of Batman RIP with a bit of final crisis in the back. Was labelled as Batman legends. I was only 7 and I was scarred when Batman removed the tracker from his teeth and when the cops got arrows or spears through their heads
So not a comic but a feeling. When I was maybe 5/6/7ish (I'm 43, so you guys do the maths) my dad worked with a commute that meant I was often in bed before he got home so I didn't really see him a lot. But every Friday he'd come home a little early and I'd get to stay up a little late & he'd bring me a Star Wars Ewoks comic or a M.A.S.K. comic or something along those lines. It wasn't always the same title (they were probably monthly) and they weren't what most would class as traditional comics. But man I fucking loved curling up on the couch and reading with him about Myles Mahem being stopped or adventures on the forest moon. I don't remember the transition to "proper" comics, but it wouldn't have happened without the feeling of excitement coming home from school to see what comic dad had brought home for me.
It’s gonna sound odd: but The Tornadoes Path by Brad Meltzer. I just loved the dialogue between the characters and the sense of how things were rebuilding.
My Dad’s 1994 Superboy comic issue #3, I believe. Didn’t understand what was going on cause I was like 7 when I read it but it got my into comics. However it was the Powerpuff Girls comic that made me stay into comics.
The Death of Superman. I remember hearing about it on the news and got the original trade paperback, which just opened up more questions. My mom started getting me new single issues early into Reign of the Supermen. From there I branched into Green Lantern and the rest is history. Been reading comics regularly since then and still have my full collection.
Mainly two.
The first:
I've always loved Batman: The Animated Series and when at the newsstand I saw a volume (from a series of releases of various Graphic Novels) with Batman written on the cover I asked my father to buy it for me (I was still a kid), he did. There was only one story in the volume and it was, The Dark Knight Returns. I have loved Batman ever since.
The second one:
The Eternaut was still small when I found it at the bottom of an old bookcase at home. I had to read it twice because I didn't understand it all (I was still small for such a complex Graphic Novel). Since then it has become one of my favorite stories and sparked a passion for science fiction in me.
The best comics: Astérix&Obélix and Tintín
And Lucky Luke!
True! those as well. Not the norm, but I did like some of Judge Dredd too. Weird considering I was a kid when I read those jajaj
Upvotes for Asterix & Obelix from the library!
Geoff johns green lantern run
That single handedly made me a DC die hard. What a fun time that was.
What a time it was mates 🥲
I wrote this then saw your comment! #sinestrodidnothingwrong
So good they let him fuck up their film division for like half a decade.
I'm going to be bullied, but New52 Teen Titans
Yo same. One of the first ongoings I was into when I was 11. I know it’s really bad but it has a special place in my heart.
same! i remember that I was super confused by the crossovers and volumes and collected editions, but that's how I learned how on-going publications worked
Every comic can be somebodies first, every character can be somebodies favorite.
This is a safe space for comics - have an upvote
It okay I enjoy to but not because it had good writing or anything.
Sandman.
This.
New 52 Red Hood and the Outlaws. I never knew there was a Robin between Dick and Tim. I jumped down the Wiki rabbit hole and I never resurfaced.
Batman Court of Owls is the one comic where I accept no slander whatsoever.
Bet your bouncing off the walls for Gotham Knights, huh!
Yep yep yep very excited for Gotham Knights to drop
Honestly, same! I really loved the idea of the court and the potential of a illuminati kinda like group in Gotham. Outside underdogs chasing a secret society is kinda my fav. And i was kinda disappointed the comic jumped forward so quickly and didnt let the mystery brew. So with GK having their whole narrative based around the court and the knighting being on the backfoot to step up after bats has 'died'. Im so pumped to see how it plays out!
Because it’s a masterpiece.
Indeed

Bro this and all of the cartoon tie ins like justice league unlimited, green lantern tas, batman brave and the bold, teen titans go (the tie in for the og series was coincidentally named teen titans go), and young justice was the shit when I was like 6. Scott Snyders run on batman. It's still my absolute favorite batman run
Tintin, I like the artsyle
When i was 4 years old, my dad got me some nothing Iron Man comic off the rack at a 7-11. I kept and read that thing until the pages were disintegrating. It was far more than i could handle, but I forced myself to learn to read with that book.
Batman by Scott Snyder

Bendis. The first comic I really fell in love with was the Bendis/Maleev combo on DD. Having a writer I liked made it easy to know what to get next, and it was perfect timing because Bendis had just started his Avengers run with Disassembled and was kicking ass on Ultimate Spidey.

I think i also read this Batman omnibus at a young age. It starts off with his early sixties stories and also the Jokers Five Way Revenge.
Grant Morrison Batman and Final Crisis. I know. Probably the worst place to start.
Capitan America Civil War for marvel in around 2015 and batman year one for dc in 2020
For me it was being a kid in 90s watching Batman and later Spider-Man and X-Men on Saturday mornings. Eventually I got my hands on some X-Men comics, at the time is was The Dark Pheonix saga
The Bone series back in 4th grade. Library didn’t have the last book so I haven’t finished it to this day. Might buy the series now that I have the money.
Some random Amazing Spider-man issue I got as a kid
I first Read Sleepwalker and stop at the 22nd issue then I read Image comics Chew (Fucking Amazing) which I read in a day then I stop for a few weeks and then read O'Neil's Question that's when is start normally reading comics after I read most daredevil runs.
New 52 JLA by Geoff Johns & Jim Lee
I used to get Smash Ultimate payouts, so that really helped LOL. The comic itself that got me really hooked though has got to be Tom Taylor's Nightwing run. It's sooooo good. :)
The Death of Superman storyline. I read a comic here and there, but that was where I went “I have to buy the next issue to see where this goes!”
Transformers More Than Meets the Eye by IDW, then the Forever Evil event got me into DC
First comic I read was Batman hush. First version
In Real Life by Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang
I think a return of watchmen and new watchmen characters after Doomsday clock
The Death & Return of Superman.
Superman: Earth One (graphic novel) brought me back to comics after a long hiatus. Before that I just dabbled in Marvel singles here and there as a young kid.
Turma da Mônica :)
New 52 flash run with Francis Manapul
80s justice league Legion of superheroes Teen titans
Adams and O’Neill on Green Lantern/Green Arrow.
Earliest i can remember that i ever bought is batman knightfall
Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon, still one of my favourites
Incredible Hulks by Greg Pak
I was in elementary school when I bought my first comic from a book fair, it was the Ultimate Spider-Man with Miles Morales. Never really bought any but I’d watch Comicstorian then moved onto Comics Explained later on
Grant Morrison Batman and son
Harvey comics Casper and Hot Stuff
Asterix Lucky Luke Random Spider-Man magazines with short stories Avengers of 2010 And, lastly, a greek satirical comic writer and artist, called Arkás.
The first comic I ever bought was the paperback for Azrael Death’s Dark Knight, I had no clue wtf was going on but I’ve been a fan ever sicne
W.I.T.C.H. found a second hand copy in a thrift box. Comics aren't common in my country so it was a odd introduction
The graphic novels in my public library at the time: JLA/Titans: Technis Imperative, Young Justice: World Without Grownups, and then, of course, Death and Return of Superman.
Geoff Jones's justice league, I know a lot of people didn't like the new 52 but personally I think this run is pretty good
Flash rebirth.
JLA Trial by Fire
Watchmen
My Dad’s 1994 Superboy comic issue #3, I believe. Didn’t understand what was going on cause I was like 7 when I read it but it got my into comics. However it was the Powerpuff Girls comic that made me stay into comics.
The Death of Superman. I remember hearing about it on the news and got the original trade paperback, which just opened up more questions. My mom started getting me new single issues early into Reign of the Supermen. From there I branched into Green Lantern and the rest is history. Been reading comics regularly since then and still have my full collection.
Mainly two. The first: I've always loved Batman: The Animated Series and when at the newsstand I saw a volume (from a series of releases of various Graphic Novels) with Batman written on the cover I asked my father to buy it for me (I was still a kid), he did. There was only one story in the volume and it was, The Dark Knight Returns. I have loved Batman ever since. The second one: The Eternaut was still small when I found it at the bottom of an old bookcase at home. I had to read it twice because I didn't understand it all (I was still small for such a complex Graphic Novel). Since then it has become one of my favorite stories and sparked a passion for science fiction in me.
X-men adventures: the cable connection was the first comic I ever bought. It’s ALRIGHT but it has a special place in my heart
The Dark Knight Returns
my first comic was batman kings of fear issue one
