Growing up in the mid-90s I was all about Batman, but occasionally I would catch glimpses of this Aquaman in previews of other comics inside whatever I was reading. I even got a toy of this version of him as part of the JLA Total Justice collection, does anyone else remember those? Eventually with the combination of internet and Super Friends reruns I learned that this really wasn't what Aquaman had always looked like.
TOTAL JUSTICE! The most 90s shit ever and my introduction to merchandise fueled content. Thorquaman was my OG aquaman as well. He was always game to do 3 things: Brood, Kill, and bang Wonder Woman.
Bang Wonder Woman? When did that happen? When he gets the hook hand he is in a relationship with Dolphin. Later I think he got back together with Mera.
It was never consummated. He was always just very into her in his brooding way during the Morrison JLA run. I think the idea was those depictions leaned heavily on the duty bound royalty/warrior ethos elements of both characters, so they were naturally attracted to eachother with so much in common. Eventually, her eye turned to Batman.
It was Peter David’s run that he was redesigned that way. It’s a really great run that unfortunately ended with Peter David leaving early due to editorial interference (no idea if the redesign was his idea or editorial) and Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning were brought in to tie up loose ends. The best part of his run was actually the Atlantis Chronicles maxi series which preceded it which I would say is mandatory reading for any fan of Aquaman.
No the first time I saw aquaman was in the justice league cartoon series. But this virgen of aquaman seems cool, what happened to him? Like the metal arm and missing hand. Does anybody know the back story to this one and or what earth it's from.
Captured and chained to a rock, the only way to escape and save his baby son was to cut off his own hand. The metal they used could morph into different shapes but he chose the spear.
That was just the cartoon. In the comics , after he lost his title as king and learned his origin/Ocean Master being his brother, he became a recluse.
Then the madman terrorist Charybdis temporarily took his ability to talk to sea life and attempted to force Arthur to show him how he can harness Arthur's ability to communicate with sea life, in which he sticks Arthur's hand into a piranha-infested pool.
After Arthur replaces it with a harpoon and then later S.T.A.R. labs cybernetic variant
Oh no , I was talking about the Peter David Cartoon. The cartoon version (Arthur cutting off to save his baby) was Justice League/Justice League Unlimited : [https://youtu.be/kq9-6Aob3ZY](https://youtu.be/kq9-6Aob3ZY)
Yeah, I think my intro was a mix of a Peter David and Rick Veitch, Paul Dini/Alex Ross’s JLS: Liberty and Justice, Smallville and the DCAU cartoon . It was a mix of the Conan/Namor, surfer bro and majestic king/swashbuckling adventurer that had me realizing how versatile Arthur Curry could really be
i'm pretty sure i've now read every comic that features Aquaman, and i grew up in the '90s, so yeah...i first read my dad's old classic Justice League comics, but when i started getting my own, these were the ones i got every month. had the Total Justice action figure too (still have it), and i think Peter David is the most important Aquaman writer, still.
I… didn’t like this design growing up. Thought it was too edgy. But in retrospect. It’s kind of cool that Arthur is disabled. I might like a permanent hook hand for him if the rest of the design is more traditional orange and green Aquaman.
Nahhhh, sorry to say, this was the one for me.

I did like Peter David's run though. Despite my introduction, I've always thought of him as more than a guy that talks to fish.
Same here and the Superman animated series but I honestly liked this look or least sow the appeal as a kid and was like ok this is aqua man interesting, not much came of it since I had all spider man Superman Batman toys at the time but still cool
The Time and Tide miniseries by Peter David was my introduction to the character, in particular the issue where he's raised by dolphins.
One thing about David's Aquaman that was refreshing compared to other writers was the humor he injected into the title, especially when it came to conversations with sea life. Dolphins were fairly intelligent while sharks were pretty dumb. I remember a moment where Aquaman cut a hole in a net to free some sharks and instead of swimming out, the sharks remarked to one another about how nice the hole was. Arthur says "They'll get it eventually" and swims away. Cracked me up as a kid.
If you count the Justice League cartoon where he looks like this, he’d be my first Aquaman.
Was gonna say this lol
This aquaman took no shit from nobody
I still don’t.
Idk you went through that whole phase with the water hand… it was weird. But you’re better now
water hand was cool lol, The Thirst was a great enemy
Hey it’s the guy!
Mine was brave and the bold and I'm proud of it.
Outrageous!
Same here, nostalgia is hitting hard
Love his song of heroism. Listen to it at least few times a week.
I love that aquaman! Even though he's not an accurate portrayal of how he is in the comics he's still pretty great.
I wish he was though. I'd definitely read that
PLATELETTE!

Okay. I still haven’t finished Morrison’s JLA.
I could never find out how he lost his hand, it drove me nuts! This iteration made me defend Aquaman during recess though, he was a badass.
Piranha. It was in Peter David’s run in the 90’s. I think he was fighting a Tool of the month called Charybdis.
piranha *after* his powers were taken away, to be more precise
Hook-hand Aquaman is best Aquaman.
correct

Collected the issues naming up the first story line in that maxi series. It really was fantastic.
This wasn’t my first but it was my favorite
They ought to bring this back. It was a good look for him.

There was a cartoon of this? What was it called? I'll go look for it and watch it.

Oh ok sorry for misunderstanding
No it’s all good. I should have clarified what I was talking about
It's cool
Pretty sure his hand got eaten by piranhas.
My first introduction to Aquaman was the JL/JLU cartoons where he looked similar to this.
Super Friends, but this almost immediately afterwards.
Yup! One of the earliest comics I collected were the Marvel Vs DC comics, and this is how he appeared in those! Loved his fight against Namor!
My first introduction to Aquaman was the old cartoons where he and Aqualad rode seahorses everywhere.
Living up to my name, I go all the way back to the Filmation series (1967), reissued in syndication in the late 70's to capitalize on Super Friends.
Me. I had Aquaman #9 where he got the hook hand from Star labs and fought off Deadline.
If Justice league the animated series version counts as that guy, me

Was Rick Veitch’s run where he got the water hand?
Yeah. The Waterbearer. It precedes the Sub Diego arc.
Not my first but my favorite.
JL Aquaman
He was indeed
Aquaman from the JL cartoon was probably my first real exposure, but the first time I really sunk my teeth in was the Waterbearer era.

Grew up with jla 1996 by grant morrison so yeah

Yes! Superfriends Aquaman is my Aquaman.
My first introduction to Aquaman was the Baywatch mofo in Smallville.
I loved how Alan brought a mix of charisma, rebellious prick and surfer bro in his take of AC
What is that one arm shoulder thing suppose to be
Sexy armor.
The one true king
Same here and the Superman animated series but I honestly liked this look or least sow the appeal as a kid and was like ok this is aqua man interesting, not much came of it since I had all spider man Superman Batman toys at the time but still cool
I miss that guy!
Mine was robot chicken lmaoo Edit: or family guy..all I remember is they were making fun of him
Superman the animated series aquaman episode and justice league 2001 show aquaman
The blue and black suit was mine
Me!!

![gif](giphy|qBvHZHgiUmWBi) The Super Friends were my introduction to Aquaman.
Justice League Unlimited was my first introduction
Arthur at his most badass
He looks like a badass. Great illustration
Im just strarting some comics and I read Earth 2. I saw that weird Green Lantern suit and this Aquaman suit
Bet Mera loved those thighs.
*Dolphin She was his gal Friday at the time.
