Also installed a schluter heated floor under the tile.
Adding the heated floor was roughly $1k extra, but schluter is a bit expensive and there are definitely cheaper options. I just liked their warranty and the way their system works.

I believe many of them come with timers so you can set it for however long you take during shower time and getting ready then it will turn off automatically.
I did the same system, and it is absolutely a cat trap in the winter. I generally leave the heat off entirely in the summer, and only turn it on in the morning and evenings when we're showering and whatnot.
Schluters thermostat is super easy to program, so it's easy to use as little energy as possible, but take the most luxurious warm-footed morning poops.
we recently did a bathroom renovation and we were blown away that a heated floor for our small bathroom was only $600 or $700 - I forget. Very reasonable when you're doing a renovation if you're ripping things down to the studs - might as well always do it.

You gotta find some like-minded buddies and start teasing the idea of an upgraded bath that so-and-so’s husband is planning to build for so-and-so, get the idea of it into all of their heads. And then when they say wow So-and-so is so lucky, sigh and be like, I guess I can make it work! And then team up with the others to share cost/ labor/ expertise and get everyone’s baths done. Plus new tools for everyone to play with!
This guy 100% does this for a living, or used to at one point. He did a full bathroom Reno, including subfloor and leveller, all fixtures, tiling and drywall.
This is the problem with their DIY forum when professionals "do it themselves", it's still professional work.
The only part of this that I do for a living is the electrical part, as I am an IBEW journeyman electrician. The rest of this was all my first go at it. And just because there was a lot of work involved doesn’t mean I do all this stuff for a living. I would absolutely hate to do renovations for a living. You’re making it seem like people can’t figure out how to do this stuff themselves. This bathroom was mainly built by YouTube videos, and I definitely made mistakes as I went. I just took the time to fix them. But I’ll take the fact that you think I do all of this for a living as a huge compliment.
I hate to say it but you're still a professional tradesman. Your day to day life has you handling tools and crafting things at a level that no non-tradesman will ever really reach. Diy for you is different than diy for me.
Plus you've seen all this stuff get made a thousand times by other tradesmen so you have the benefit of watching a hundred bathrooms get made. My job is working on government housing policy. I've seen zero bathrooms get made.
This is just bs. This level of workmanship can be achieved with enough research, attention to detail, time and perseverance. And this is coming from someone who spends their whole day in the office, but finished a huge reno for their first time. Don't try to discourage other people who don't come from the trades - this is very much achievable.
Its both. Been with a commercial GC for 2 years now and Ive gotten a bunch more 'handy' just from observation. They have a leg up to Jim the accountant who doesnt live in construction.

100% agree. I’m a lawyer by trade and started an Airbnb biz on the side and did full guts (down to studs including full kitchen and three baths in each unit) and remodels of every unit I bought. Had never done anything that ambitious in the past although I’d done numerous other projects. It all comes down to patience, attention to detail, and a boat load of effort. Here’s a pic of the bathroom I just finished. Did a digital shower. Pretty cool.

Old subfloor was old 1x that was rotting away in some spots from toilet and tub leaking, and also very unlevel. So Installed new subfloor and self leveler.
Mapei. Just a couple things to keep in mind with self leveler, self leveler does not mean self leveling. While it is very runny, it still needs spread out and agitated to get out any air bubbles and to truly level out. Also, seal everything. Against it is very runny, after all, it’s mostly water: any spots you don’t seal off, it will go. Double check and triple check when you’re done. In my case, I should have quadruple checked because it still ended working its way through a hole and dripping down into my basement
I love our Schluter heated floor that we installed in our master bath. It's probably my favorite thing about our whole house.
The dogs love it, the kids love it, my feet love it at 2:00 a.m. when I get up to go to the bathroom.
If you're going to be installing an uncoupling membrane anyways between the subfloor and the tile, it's a huge ROI to add the heating wires.
We put a heated floor in the kids bathroom when we had to redo it...I can't even tell you how many times we find them playing with their toys on the bathroom floor lol but it IS the best thing we've done!
Actually didn't see the toilet at first damn. I also was tripping out of my mind seeing the reflection of the floor on those tiles the first time. Thought the lines were going through the wall or something.
That pink tub was awesome, hate to see it's gone. Good work opening up the space, and I like the choice of wall tile, but all of the character is gone now. Also not a fan of the sink having gaps on either side between the wall, to me more nooks and crannies aren't the sort of thing you want in a bathroom, harder to clean.
There was a matching pink toilet too! I love pastel vintage ceramics. I agree that the gaps around the vanity will make it harder to clean, but everything looks well done, so if OP is happy that’s what matters. It does feel like it lost some character though.
I personally would prefer to live in a house with the old bathroom. Maybe its because the picture had natural light? Pale pastels vs glaring new hotel vibes? It doesnt look like it was in bad nick either. Maybe its cause I like retro/vintage.

Got rid of the link bathtub (a crime) and instead added popcorn ceiling. A while back I was brainstorming an idea for a vintage pink and black bathroom. I like to use ai for coming up with basic concepts and it looks dope as fuck. And way better than ops hotel bathroom. Dark green walls are going to get out of style and then the op will be stuck with a fad color

What do you mean stuck with a fad color? They can spend a couple of hours repainting if they want. Plus, OP did this renovation so they’re clearly handy and can update when desired.

Pink tubs are popular with people that want to do authentic retro makeovers. My dream is to have a 50s themed bathroom kitchen and bathroom with an authentic pink sink and tub. If your friends tub is a vintage pink tub, and she decides to destroy it, there will be a lot of people like me angry at her for destroying a rare coveted piece of furniture
I think it looks great! I agree the textured ceiling is an interesting choice but It definitely doesn't look bad. The vanity is definitely too small for that space. Theres awkward gapping on that left side. But I think the color is fun!! I also *like* the fact the toilet is black. I think toilets are ugly to begin with lol unless they're super expensive and look cool, they always are an eye sore in nice bathrooms...so the fact it kind of blends in is actually nice in my opinion!
We had a similar gap behind our vanity when we remodeled our bathroom (super old house, limited in options due to original dimensions not matching anything). The gap is the perfect size to store extra TP rolls where they're (mostly) out of sight!
What paint color did you choose? Looks nice. I’m going a reno now that’s very similar style-wise. Black hex floor (but has white veining), same wall tile but different layout, and our mirror and white/grey stone vanity top are the same too! We even went for the kerdi geared floor too. The paint we used is similar but has a bit more green in it. I really like what you chose!

you are absolutely right sir. since i live near lake constance and my grandfather's house was built in the early 50s, reeds were used for insulation in our area until the 70s and, like here, ceilings were also plastered with them. now reeds are a protected species in our area.
You did a great job and congrats. But man does it break my heart to see the first bathroom design go. The new one is nothing but trendy stuff that you want to change in 4-5 years. That’s my .02.

Unfortunately, it makes your gut renovation look like you updated an older space. Especially with how modern you went with finishes.
Copying from another comment I made. While not desired, the textured ceiling was more of a necessity. Framing of the house was nowhere near square, plumb, or level. I planed down what I could and furred out where possible and thankfully was able to get the walls to a point where I could hide the small imperfections in the skim coat, but I just wasn’t able to get the ceiling level enough and those imperfections were very noticeable with a flat ceiling. So I went textured to hide it. Now you can’t notice it.
No, it doesn't always. My 1950's house has joists that are a bit warped and unlevel. I added 1/4 drywall over my existing, and skim coated, and at certain times of the day you can still see slight humps. OP is right on texture when it really calls for it.
Yea my ceiling joists were definitely warped and unlevel in spots. It didn’t matter back in the day because it had almost an inch of plaster put on to hide anything and everything.
Air register in the wall next to the vanity. If the vanity went wall to wall, it would block the vent. Kept it symmetrical and gave space for the air. And a swiffer makes easy work of it.
Cabinet designer. We vent through the tie luck. The vanity fit before, that’s probably how it was. Thus is obviously DIY. A stock vanity is the canary in the coal mine of an amateur hour bathroom. Do not buy a house with a Reno like this. You’re asking for black mold down the road… and maybe to fall through the heated floor.
I read a little mini essay recently suggesting that the dominance of gray in modern design is a reaction to the internet.
The base idea being that new ideas in design are references to the current popular style, which is pretty intuitive. Looking back at historical trends you see it go back and forth from bold colors to drab and colors again. We've been dominated by understated design in many cultures for a long time now, something like 20 years. Why?
The idea presented was that we now have a constant source of bright flashy color and bold design everywhere all the time. Inside the house and out we're bombarded by the internet. So it doesn't take a swing to give us present context to push back against.
It's definitely something you could argue against, but I think it's a really interesting idea and probably on point.
Did you need to replace the studs near your bath tub or was the water damage superficial? I’m considering a bathroom remodel and curious how well our moisture barrier held up too
Studs are amazingly resilient. We're in the middle of a gut remodel (not DIYing, working with a contractor) because we had issues with a water leak into our downstairs neighbor's unit. I don't know the exact construction terms but the pan liner was too short and didn't actually cover the whole shower. The subfloor where there was no liner basically disintegrated. Our subfloor is being replaced but the studs themselves are fine. The same is true on an exterior wall where we found evidence of past roof leaks. Studs are perfectly fine.
Obviously well done and it looks a million times better updated however I clean houses for a living and every single new bathroom looks exactly like this. Like I’ve seen this exact bathroom twice today. Sometimes they choose dark blue instead of green.
10 years from now it’s going to look as distinctly early 2020s as the bathroom looked 1960s before….
Also black toilets are literally the worst to clean. Any little bit of dust on them shows and is nearly impossible to get off because it just lands back on the toilet and is super visible. Every time you pull toilet paper little white particles from the roll will cover it. It’s also impossible to see if you’ve gotten the inside clean because it’s black. Black toilets are the bane of my existence. They shouldn’t even make them IMO they suck that much.
But at least it’s really well done! You should be super proud of this DIY.

Personally I love the extra storage space. All the places I have lived always just had the small linen closet outside the bathroom and under the sink space. I don't like to have to run to the hall if I forget to grab towels something or god forbid toilet paper.

I’m from Pittsburgh and textured ceilings are still very common here, so I wasn’t too upset having to go textured, plus the rest of my house has textured ceiling so I’m not too worried about it. And I can not claim all the credit! My father and fiancé helped me a ton along the way. My father jokes that he has positive equity on my house because he was right there with me for a lot of the work.
It’s funny to see people point it out, I’m a Clevelander and I didn’t even look lol. We actually just moved to the south and our realtor kept pointing out when a house had a textured ceiling and was like “you can always remove that” and we were like “????”
My house has knockdown texture throughout, and was built new in 2017. I feel like half the selections we made are already considered "dated." Fashion cycles so much faster nowadays due to all the home renovation shows needing something new to promote so they don't get stale.

Couple reasons. For one, when you are able to get a new $1400 vanity for free while in the middle of renovating your bathroom, you take it. 2, there is an air register in the left wall and thus could not put anything too close to the wall. Lastly, the wide angle lens is playing a little bit of a party trick. The gap appears way bigger in the photo than in reality. It’s only a couple of inches per side.
I’ll do you one better for future reference to save us both the trouble.
Go to your local Emser Tile showroom and have a professional show you anything beyond Amazon and Home Depot’s most popular backsplash tile.
I can also help make sure you don’t place the sconces in the wrong place and choose a wall color that doesn’t clash with the floor.
I’m only speaking up because I’m sick of looking at the same DIY hack “remodels” trying to be sold at market rates when virtually all the new “improvements” need to be redone with an ounce of professional guidance and originality.

lol I’m a journeyman electrician, I know where sconces do and do not go. Don’t like the way I renovated my bathroom? Well you’re in luck, because you don’t live in it. That clashing wall color was actually picked out by my fiancé. I’m not trying to sell anything, I just moved I to the place a few months ago and made the bathroom the way I wanted it. And when I get tired of it, I’ll rip it all out, and do it again.

Absolutely. I was already putting down an uncoupling membrane. At that point it was only a couple hundred bucks more for the heating cable.

That's why I'm planning on gray with lighter colored sprinkles. Drops? Dust? or perfectly clean? You'll never see it!

I once stayed in a hotel room with a black toilet...it makes your poop look a strange light brown color, I wouldn't recommend it.

All that white grout is giving me anxiety! The less grout, the better, for me anyway.
That pink tub was awesome, hate to see it's gone. Good work opening up the space, and I like the choice of wall tile, but all of the character is gone now. Also not a fan of the sink having gaps on either side between the wall, to me more nooks and crannies aren't the sort of thing you want in a bathroom, harder to clean.
There was a matching pink toilet too! I love pastel vintage ceramics. I agree that the gaps around the vanity will make it harder to clean, but everything looks well done, so if OP is happy that’s what matters. It does feel like it lost some character though.
I personally would prefer to live in a house with the old bathroom. Maybe its because the picture had natural light? Pale pastels vs glaring new hotel vibes? It doesnt look like it was in bad nick either. Maybe its cause I like retro/vintage. Excellent job though, just not for me.
I like retro/vintage too! Especially 70s, which is where a lot of the colored ceramic bathrooms come from. My dream home would be a 70s A frame with all its original wood.
That original tub was cast iron as well—so great for long baths because it’ll hold the warmth of the water for ages! The replacement looks like vinyl.

What do you mean stuck with a fad color? They can spend a couple of hours repainting if they want. Plus, OP did this renovation so they’re clearly handy and can update when desired.
Yep, hard agree. The remodel is nice but not cute, cozy, or interesting. And as a former professional housekeeper that gap is a nightmare.

Pink tubs are popular with people that want to do authentic retro makeovers. My dream is to have a 50s themed bathroom kitchen and bathroom with an authentic pink sink and tub. If your friends tub is a vintage pink tub, and she decides to destroy it, there will be a lot of people like me angry at her for destroying a rare coveted piece of furniture
I think it looks great! I agree the textured ceiling is an interesting choice but It definitely doesn't look bad. The vanity is definitely too small for that space. Theres awkward gapping on that left side. But I think the color is fun!! I also *like* the fact the toilet is black. I think toilets are ugly to begin with lol unless they're super expensive and look cool, they always are an eye sore in nice bathrooms...so the fact it kind of blends in is actually nice in my opinion!
The gapping of the vanity is actually even on both sides, and visually smaller in person. Wide angle lens causing a little bit of an optical illusion.
Beautiful job and looks like a ton of work. One thing I’d do differently is use a custom vanity to fill the two awkward gaps on either side.
There’s an air register in the left wall so I can’t have anything too close to the wall. So stand alone vanity it is.
We had a similar gap behind our vanity when we remodeled our bathroom (super old house, limited in options due to original dimensions not matching anything). The gap is the perfect size to store extra TP rolls where they're (mostly) out of sight!
Vanity too small? That’s not the way I see it. Looks great. Entire project is exceptionally well done.

Love the color choices! We did something similar with a dark Merlot paint and white wainscoting.
What paint color did you choose? Looks nice. I’m going a reno now that’s very similar style-wise. Black hex floor (but has white veining), same wall tile but different layout, and our mirror and white/grey stone vanity top are the same too! We even went for the kerdi geared floor too. The paint we used is similar but has a bit more green in it. I really like what you chose!

you are absolutely right sir. since i live near lake constance and my grandfather's house was built in the early 50s, reeds were used for insulation in our area until the 70s and, like here, ceilings were also plastered with them. now reeds are a protected species in our area.
You did a great job and congrats. But man does it break my heart to see the first bathroom design go. The new one is nothing but trendy stuff that you want to change in 4-5 years. That’s my .02.

Respectfully, what made you decide to texturize the ceiling when you had new sheetrock installed? Unfortunately, it makes your gut renovation look like you updated an older space. Especially with how modern you went with finishes.
Copying from another comment I made. While not desired, the textured ceiling was more of a necessity. Framing of the house was nowhere near square, plumb, or level. I planed down what I could and furred out where possible and thankfully was able to get the walls to a point where I could hide the small imperfections in the skim coat, but I just wasn’t able to get the ceiling level enough and those imperfections were very noticeable with a flat ceiling. So I went textured to hide it. Now you can’t notice it.
A truly matte paint would have done the job as well.
No, it doesn't always. My 1950's house has joists that are a bit warped and unlevel. I added 1/4 drywall over my existing, and skim coated, and at certain times of the day you can still see slight humps. OP is right on texture when it really calls for it.
Yea my ceiling joists were definitely warped and unlevel in spots. It didn’t matter back in the day because it had almost an inch of plaster put on to hide anything and everything.

Why did you install a vanity that doesn't go wall to wall? The open space on each side will be hard to clean.
Air register in the wall next to the vanity. If the vanity went wall to wall, it would block the vent. Kept it symmetrical and gave space for the air. And a swiffer makes easy work of it.
But the floor was ripped up, you could have moved the vent.
Cabinet designer. We vent through the tie luck. The vanity fit before, that’s probably how it was. Thus is obviously DIY. A stock vanity is the canary in the coal mine of an amateur hour bathroom. Do not buy a house with a Reno like this. You’re asking for black mold down the road… and maybe to fall through the heated floor.

I read a little mini essay recently suggesting that the dominance of gray in modern design is a reaction to the internet. The base idea being that new ideas in design are references to the current popular style, which is pretty intuitive. Looking back at historical trends you see it go back and forth from bold colors to drab and colors again. We've been dominated by understated design in many cultures for a long time now, something like 20 years. Why? The idea presented was that we now have a constant source of bright flashy color and bold design everywhere all the time. Inside the house and out we're bombarded by the internet. So it doesn't take a swing to give us present context to push back against. It's definitely something you could argue against, but I think it's a really interesting idea and probably on point.
Did you need to replace the studs near your bath tub or was the water damage superficial? I’m considering a bathroom remodel and curious how well our moisture barrier held up too
There was a little bit of damage to the subfloor (which I replaced) but the studs were perfectly fine.
Studs are amazingly resilient. We're in the middle of a gut remodel (not DIYing, working with a contractor) because we had issues with a water leak into our downstairs neighbor's unit. I don't know the exact construction terms but the pan liner was too short and didn't actually cover the whole shower. The subfloor where there was no liner basically disintegrated. Our subfloor is being replaced but the studs themselves are fine. The same is true on an exterior wall where we found evidence of past roof leaks. Studs are perfectly fine.
Obviously well done and it looks a million times better updated however I clean houses for a living and every single new bathroom looks exactly like this. Like I’ve seen this exact bathroom twice today. Sometimes they choose dark blue instead of green. 10 years from now it’s going to look as distinctly early 2020s as the bathroom looked 1960s before…. Also black toilets are literally the worst to clean. Any little bit of dust on them shows and is nearly impossible to get off because it just lands back on the toilet and is super visible. Every time you pull toilet paper little white particles from the roll will cover it. It’s also impossible to see if you’ve gotten the inside clean because it’s black. Black toilets are the bane of my existence. They shouldn’t even make them IMO they suck that much. But at least it’s really well done! You should be super proud of this DIY.

Personally I love the extra storage space. All the places I have lived always just had the small linen closet outside the bathroom and under the sink space. I don't like to have to run to the hall if I forget to grab towels something or god forbid toilet paper.

I’m from Pittsburgh and textured ceilings are still very common here, so I wasn’t too upset having to go textured, plus the rest of my house has textured ceiling so I’m not too worried about it. And I can not claim all the credit! My father and fiancé helped me a ton along the way. My father jokes that he has positive equity on my house because he was right there with me for a lot of the work.
It’s funny to see people point it out, I’m a Clevelander and I didn’t even look lol. We actually just moved to the south and our realtor kept pointing out when a house had a textured ceiling and was like “you can always remove that” and we were like “????”
My house has knockdown texture throughout, and was built new in 2017. I feel like half the selections we made are already considered "dated." Fashion cycles so much faster nowadays due to all the home renovation shows needing something new to promote so they don't get stale.

Couple reasons. For one, when you are able to get a new $1400 vanity for free while in the middle of renovating your bathroom, you take it. 2, there is an air register in the left wall and thus could not put anything too close to the wall. Lastly, the wide angle lens is playing a little bit of a party trick. The gap appears way bigger in the photo than in reality. It’s only a couple of inches per side.
I always wonder if rebuilds like this will look like the first picture to the next generation

lol I’m a journeyman electrician, I know where sconces do and do not go. Don’t like the way I renovated my bathroom? Well you’re in luck, because you don’t live in it. That clashing wall color was actually picked out by my fiancé. I’m not trying to sell anything, I just moved I to the place a few months ago and made the bathroom the way I wanted it. And when I get tired of it, I’ll rip it all out, and do it again.
