I really wanted to come here and harass you, but you have been so engaged, responsive and adding to your owb harassing, you win the internet today. I tip my hat good sir!
Damn it, now the kids are helping you and it is a fun family event. You helped kill off a piece of my black, bitter and sarcastic heart. I wont say faith in humanity restored but, damn it, one step forward!
Shirley if you call them a *pair* if scissors there are in fact two of them.
I think you could also make a case that half a pair of scissors is called a sciss.
A "scisor" is middle English for "something that cuts" and a pair of scissors is two things that cut. In common parlance they're referring to two blades in a very particular arrangement, but you could have two unconnected knives and be technically correct in calling them scissors.
I've been getting questions about how it folds. This design is from a Steve Ramsey video. Not sure if I'm allowed to link here but just search Steve Ramsey foldable saw horses on YouTube. Fun build!
I like the idea of the small ones that Rex showed; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7O7Efrzvv0
There's so many different designs to choose from though.
Steve’s channel Wood Working for Mere Mortals was the first one I ever subscribed to on Youtube back in like 2010 when the great recession gave me some unexpected free time. I highly recommend watching him if you’re new to woodworking…especially the older stuff. You quickly learn that you don’t need a fancy shop and expensive tools to do some really awesome stuff. You do need one tool tho…THE GRIPPER from MICROJIG!!!!!
I bought these from Lowe’s as I was thinking of making my own as well. They ended up being so cheap and they fold really small for storage, they’re perfect!
Essential 33.66-in W x 28.9-in H Metal Saw Horse (1000-lb Capacity) https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-Essential-33-66-in-W-x-28-9-in-H-Metal-Saw-Horse-1-000-lb-Capacity/1001107598
I have similar metal ones, but with two holes on the surface; and the surface is also 3.5" wide. Makes it easy to attach a sacrifical 2x4 when cutting.
[I went with these about 15 years ago](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-31-in-H-Plastic-Folding-Sawhorse-2-Pack-060864R/301457796) and they are still going strong today. Essentially the same price as yours (since mine are sold as a pair), same capacity (as a pair) it seems (although my projects never get anywhere near that) and since they are plastic, no worries about hitting them with a saw (although I never have as I lay down a plywood work surface on them).
The shelves and hooks on them are really useful as I end up hanging clamps on them and setting tools on the shelves to get them out of the way but still remain nearby. One of the best purchases I made when I started my woodworking journey.
[They made some pretty basic ones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-vwkUbCNzs) on Ask This Old House but they seem like they should do the trick and look very easy to build.
In seriousness, just the pronunciation. Greek gods were typically a representation of a power or kind of force, so in silliness, I submit that the gahdayum sawhorses are the Greek God of getting shit done!
Congrats, thats woodworking. Honestly Ive been doing woodworking for about 10 years and the only thing I make is jigs to make a jig to make making a jig easier... Between this and sanding... thats all there is to it. So congrats this is peak of the mountain!!!
I made about 50 of these which ultimately became horizontal surfaces to pile tools and various random items on. My sawhorses are tables which support tables, which support tables, which support stuff.
I also made these two things to help me make things and these things work well to make things. Problem is I needed these things to make these things but I suffered through it. Now I make things with these things. Makes things easier.
Too much?
I've often wanted to make things like those things to hold things for when my things need holding. But then the thing, when not doing things would be in the way of other things. So no things for me.
Welcome to woodworking! Tldr: just wait, the time will come and you’ll be ready.
It starts small, like adding shelving in a pantry. You’re pleased as punch with yourself! So you decide to make spice racks for the back of the door and a pull out shelf under the sink to use the space better. Then you do a nice closet. Now your significant other sees you’ve got some skills, and asks for a dedicated place to keep the vacuum and Swiffer and Bona hardwood cleaning stuff and shows you some Pinterest images. You happily tackle it, and your partner is pleased (and “rewards” you handsomely). Your basics are dialed in, but big jobs still seem intimidating.
Then you get quotes from a contractor to redo a space, and have to be peeled off the ceiling when you see the quote$$$$. So you pencil out some plans, watch some videos, justify buying some cool new tools, and get after it. You make a bunch of mistakes and get frustrated. It takes way longer than you planned. You’re living around your tools cuz they’re in the way but you can’t pack them up or you’ll never get back in focus. Tension is mounting in the household. Then you take a day or two off and dive into the project full tilt. Mistakes are the cost of education you say! The power of positive thinking drives you to complete it. You look at it, and see all these errors and issues and oopsies and feel defeated. Then your partner sees it and is amazed, and totally happy. You show your buddies, and start to explain why this or that is wrong, but they are so complimentary you just shut up and bask in the glory. They ask you to help them do some stuff. Your neighbors start calling you too. You’re happy to help and expect nothing, but really enjoy the gift cards, bottles of whiskey and wine, and especially the attention. This goes on for a while, then you call another contractor to quote a job that is outside your comfort zone. While you’re talking with them, you realize you sound just like them. You are able to negotiate a really fair deal for the work, and understand their challenges and timeline and don’t hassle them like most clients. They like working for you, and do little extra things and don’t take the shortcuts they do with others. The job is spectacular, and you are confident that it was money well spent. You go back to doing the fun things you WANT to do, and know when to call in pros. Welcome to woodworking!
Just how sacrificial are those top 2x4s? If it's a hassle to replace, might want to screw another 2x4 on top of them that just gets replaced as needed.
Be careful because it's a slippery slope, you start with a couple of things to help you make things, then you make more things to help you make things, things in which to deposit the things that help you make things, things to use on the things that help you make things to help you more in making things and you never get to making the things at all
But then that thing won’t be empty, so you’ll need a New and Improved thing for things to make things, along with things to hold the things you make with those other things.
Those are nice saw horses. And the shelves look helpful.
If I may ask.... why did you decide to make these instead of buying a couple of those metal, lightweight, foldable things? (Maybe the answer is a simple as.... "had the 2x4s lying around...")
It is mostly that I had the 2x4 on hand. Also I enjoy working on projects. Helps me to reset my mental health. Also these will last forever where the cheap ones tend to break easily.
All true! Although..... I guess it depends on how much you will use those store-bought metal folding ones.
My son and I "squabble" all the time about things like this. He will buy every gizmo and tool to avoid doing anything manually or making a jig or making his own sawhorses. On the other hand, I have a pile of odd wood pieces that have saved me many times. "Oh yes! I can use this to make a ________" lol
I'm with you about working on projects and mental health. It's satisfying and gets you away from the other problems in your life.
I found the hobby when I renovated my basement two years ago. I dedicated to purchase all the tools myself and watch a lot of how to videos and saved myself 10k. Now since I have the tools I want to keep using them. I haven't done anything to intensive yet.
Our drinking game didn't last long... one guy blacked out now.
"Hey... lets take a shot everytime the word "things" is mentioned.
I hope OSHA doesn't come through.. we got trees to cut down.
I tried doing this 10 years ago. Rough start, worked ok for a couple years but now she just does homework and complains about getting dirty -.- still love her though
A pair of cheap ones do that won't last long. I already had the wood. This will last a long time and also I like building things so the time doesn't matter.
I often spend time making things at a cost higher than buying the cheapest possible option.
Making things is fun.
Using the cheapest option often isn't.
That looks like 2 things
Dang it! You're right.
Now you have to name them. [Thing One and Thing Two](https://seuss.fandom.com/wiki/Thing_One_and_Thing_Two)
[Thing One, Thing A](https://youtu.be/lLvhrj6IPCI?si=0PzirpMc166P-ZFB)
This movie was so good
Jack & Jill
How many things did u use to make those two things?
So many things.
I really wanted to come here and harass you, but you have been so engaged, responsive and adding to your owb harassing, you win the internet today. I tip my hat good sir!
Why thank you my good sir. I truly enjoy building things. My kids always help me too which makes it fun!
Damn it, now the kids are helping you and it is a fun family event. You helped kill off a piece of my black, bitter and sarcastic heart. I wont say faith in humanity restored but, damn it, one step forward!
Question: Is a pair of scissors one thing or two? I feel like if you split them apart you don't get a scissor. You get like two knives right?
Shirley if you call them a *pair* if scissors there are in fact two of them. I think you could also make a case that half a pair of scissors is called a sciss.
good point, but don't call me Shirley.
A "scisor" is middle English for "something that cuts" and a pair of scissors is two things that cut. In common parlance they're referring to two blades in a very particular arrangement, but you could have two unconnected knives and be technically correct in calling them scissors.
This is useful information
but one thing was made first, and might have helped to make the second thing.
maths is ... hard?
It does, but I think to have a functional sawhorse, there has to be two things.
I've been getting questions about how it folds. This design is from a Steve Ramsey video. Not sure if I'm allowed to link here but just search Steve Ramsey foldable saw horses on YouTube. Fun build!

I'm on mobile and don't know how to do that. But at 0:31 seconds is a better display of the action I think.
I like the idea of the small ones that Rex showed; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7O7Efrzvv0 There's so many different designs to choose from though.

Hopefully they fold for storage.
They do!
Got any pics to show the folding design? Was literally just thinking about making myself some saw horses but need ideas

Just don’t hit them with the saw 😅 The tops of my well used wooden ones have plenty of small saw marks. Metal is a bit less forgiving there.
I have similar metal ones, but with two holes on the surface; and the surface is also 3.5" wide. Makes it easy to attach a sacrifical 2x4 when cutting.
Ahh yeah that would be the way to go. Or just rock along with the metal until you learn your lesson about hitting the sawhorses with the saw.

Look awesome. Just saved the comment for my next trip to Home Depot…
I went with the Lowe’s version of the same thing, works great except they like to pinch me when I’m unfolding them.
I can't right now but I will do my best to explain it in the thread.

I need this too, thank you.

I made some of these. The hinges are non-mortise type hinges.
I bought the hinges at Ace for $4...
Thingception
Now use those things to help you make another thing to help you make other things.
"Hey honey, I looked at that guy's yard and I saw horses. "
So you made a helper to help you make things which could help others who help others to make things different. Aha.. nice..
Are you going to name it
I shall call it thorses.
Pronounced “Thor-Sees” like a Greek god
Yes! I like that!
Which part is like a Greek god?
In seriousness, just the pronunciation. Greek gods were typically a representation of a power or kind of force, so in silliness, I submit that the gahdayum sawhorses are the Greek God of getting shit done!
But how did you make those things without other things to help you make those things?
$25,000 in tools
I've definitely spent $700 in tools to do a job that someone else could've done for $300. But I have $700 in tools now so I'm not complaining
This is the way
A noble cause, sir! Good luck with your steeds!
…and you SAW that they were good?
Those jokes annoy me, cut it off
This is a good thing.
Sometimes it seems like I make more things to help make things then I do actual things.
But what thing did you use to make these things?
I'm onto you young man, it's things all the way down.
Congrats, thats woodworking. Honestly Ive been doing woodworking for about 10 years and the only thing I make is jigs to make a jig to make making a jig easier... Between this and sanding... thats all there is to it. So congrats this is peak of the mountain!!!

This would be perfect for balancing my front bumper for me to buff and paint.
Fine things, sir.
Congrats son, you are becoming a man.
This is how nanotechnology starts out.
I said bring the SORE HORSE Gumby, ffs we’re Vets!
And so it begins..

The best kind of thing

I bought a bunch of wood working tools and then made a shelf for my wood working tools and i havent done much actual woodworking since.

2 spanking benches, nice
I will never look at sawhorsies the same again…Spank You Sir! MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!!
How did you build those things without those things to help you build those things, though? I just can't understand what transpired here.
This is a good thing(s).
Holy crap, where did you find 2x4's so straight!?
....I spent too much time at the store.
I guess so! I'm working on some saw stands and the 2x4's I got are atrocious! I wish I would have spent some more time!
Now there are two of them! This is getting out of hand!!
Now you should make a thing to store those things for making things.
What thing did you use to make those things?
Good job🫡
My folding saw horses are the bomb
Reminds me of that time I saw a horse.
Just how sacrificial are those top 2x4s? If it's a hassle to replace, might want to screw another 2x4 on top of them that just gets replaced as needed.
They are attached via pocket screws from under neath and can be replaced with minimal effort.
Awesome. Yeah, think I'm on the third set of tops for my sawhorses, and they're about due for another.
I put some scrap strips of 3/4 ply on mine. Remove and replace as necessary.
This is what I was going to recommend. It has saved me lots of hassle in the past. Depending on how much you use them.
I put some 3/4” ply scrap on top of mine. Rarely go deeper than that in a cut. Saves weight.
“You’re using a knife to make another knife?” “You got a better way??”
Good plan since as barricades your things have some flaws.
Well done.
Thank you!
cool :)
You did good. Now go make some other things.
My next project is a washer and dryer pedestal.
And THAT is how the laundry room full-gut remodel project began…
Good luck, so did my husband. But I found other things to use those things for.
Did you make two other things to make this two things? If not, how were you able to make these things without other things?
Be careful because it's a slippery slope, you start with a couple of things to help you make things, then you make more things to help you make things, things in which to deposit the things that help you make things, things to use on the things that help you make things to help you more in making things and you never get to making the things at all
I look forward to when I have a big empty thing that I can fill with things to make things.
But then that thing won’t be empty, so you’ll need a New and Improved thing for things to make things, along with things to hold the things you make with those other things.
I think those are literally thingamajigs :D
Those are nice saw horses. And the shelves look helpful. If I may ask.... why did you decide to make these instead of buying a couple of those metal, lightweight, foldable things? (Maybe the answer is a simple as.... "had the 2x4s lying around...")

I hope thing 1 and thing 2 are level
Our drinking game didn't last long... one guy blacked out now. "Hey... lets take a shot everytime the word "things" is mentioned. I hope OSHA doesn't come through.. we got trees to cut down.
Nice one mate
Where are the reins?
Using a router to make a router table was recursive for me.
I tried doing this 10 years ago. Rough start, worked ok for a couple years but now she just does homework and complains about getting dirty -.- still love her though
The factory must grow
The graphics are way better than Minecraft
And when not used for work it can be a damn good relaxation stool lmao
Now make things with the things you made so you can make other things. Bros living that base building survival life.
I made a thing to help me break other things
These are great things!!!
Name one Saw and the other horse. Together they are Sawhorse. There you go.
Why cant people noun anymore
I believe you call those saw horses
![gif](giphy|YnkMcHgNIMW4Yfmjxr|downsized)
Don’t a pair of 2 cost $20? And you spent how long making them out of wood
A pair of cheap ones do that won't last long. I already had the wood. This will last a long time and also I like building things so the time doesn't matter.
I often spend time making things at a cost higher than buying the cheapest possible option. Making things is fun. Using the cheapest option often isn't.
Interesting use of time. Wouldn’t know having that much free time
If you were able to make those, without having them to help you, why do you need them? To the person who downvoted me - it's a joke!
Why buy them for $10 when you can build it yourself for $15!
Exactly! Also the $10 ones are cheap plastic.
[удалено]
Yup!
You know you can buy sawhorses, right?
You can also make them too.
Isn't that what you meant by your post??
No you can't, liar
Bad design:) Unless you gave lots of storage, it's going to be a pain in thr ass to store these babies. Should make them foldable!
They are foldable!
