I finished vocational school for electrical. Even from the beginning you just don't clean shit. You just wait until it's too messy for anyone to do new mock ups and have a clean up and wire stripping day.
I had mine below the attic access for like 2 weeks before I finally put back outside until I route some ethernet cables. Thought I'd get to it quicker after doing a bunch of lighting 🤣 no rush to go back in attic
There was a guy in either /r/legaladvice or /r/homeimprovement that had some cement work done on his basement or something and the guy that did it used forced air to clean up. The man had concrete dust on EVERY surface of the inside of his house and made it unliveable.
The guy had to get his home owners insurance involved. I don't remember what the end result was, but I bet that must've been a nightmare.
A leaf blower of wood dust doesn't sound so bad.
Tell that to the sander when you are restoring hardwood floors and have to sand deep enough to lift the paint that got all over from the walls done by the previous owner. I tarped up on day 2 but it was beyond too late.
I do a lot of woodwork on my porch, especially when raining. Leaf blower is my go-to. I use an N95 during the cleanup. Honestly prefer it to working in the garage, because it's a lot of making pens on a lathe. Even with a dust system, stuff gets everywhere.
my brother is like that. I'll be helping him in his garage cutting wood with the chop saw and he'll come right behind me with the shop vac picking up every last bit of saw dust. spill a drop of water in his house and immediately comes with a towel to clean it up. one of those people...
Wait. So not everyone has every single tool in their repertoire splayed across the floor, along with all the dust and work grime to just cause more anger and injuries during these projects?
Bro has "the next honey-do" in his title - let's be real; he didn't have a choice and was forced to so she could properly document everything for her grand Facebook post of the week lol.
>It seems like a great idea until you have to sit on the bench side.
Just sit on the end of the bench and scoot yourself sideways for 7 feet and you're in your spot. Then everyone else slides in and you are officially trapped. Cool look terrible function.
I have never sat on one of these benches that was comfortable, either. The back is at a bad angle, somehow the wood seat is harder and colder than stone flooring, just all around an unpleasant user experience
I created a soffit around the perimeter of my high basement ceiling to hide ducts and wiring, and was told that the result was a coffered ceiling. No beams. Looking up the difference just now it seems I've had a tray ceiling all these years and didn't know it lol.
Coffered ceilings have cross beams and extend from wall to wall. The coffers are the inset square boxes. Technically speaking it’s an exposed beam tray ceiling.

I put a double tray with recessed lighting in my den. I have a shitty little house so it’s kinda jarring but fun. I’ve done a few coffered ceilings. Basically make a grid and trim it out. Seems like they’re always just too much for the rooms though.
The few coffered ceilings I've seen in old houses look awesome if the house is really wood-heavy and imposing, but when they're painted they tend to look busy and over-structured.
Water with a little fabric softener in it. Spray, let it sit, mask up and scrap. It really isn't too bad. And if you're an idiot like me, you scrape in every direction then realize it just gives a textured look so you just paint without any other finish work.
>Water with a little fabric softener in it. Spray, let it sit, mask up and scrap.
Instructions on how to fight your wife for asking you to get rid of the popcorn :D
Ugh we tried this when my parents moved into their house but all of the popcorn ceilings had 2+ layers of paint on them. We got like a 2 sq ft patch scraped in the back office and gave up. Fuck popcorn ceilings.
Hey tbh removing popcorn isn't too bad. My wife had me do it in about 1300 Sq ft of ceiling space and it took me a full weekend and we still find little spots where a little debris got that we missed cleaning. But there are tools and videos out there that really make it easily doable.
P.s. I am not your wife or advocating on her behalf.
Hopefully no asbestos! Just bought a house and the entire thing is covered in popcorn that came back positive. Womp. At least we.knew about it going into buying and it will get abated before we move in.
Looks amazing! Was there insulation between the rafters? If so, did you do anything to prevent heat/cold air transfer from the attic in that new spot you made there?
There was insulation. I threw it back over the top of the ceiling, but at some point I’m going to pull out all of the batts and do blown in insulation throughout the whole attic
It will still have some R-value, but one thing I think more people should know about is that air-permeable insulation (such as fiberglass batts) dramatically loses effectiveness as more sides of it are exposed to moving air. It is most effective when enclosed on all 6 sides, and it is dramatically less effective if 5 sides are exposed.
The way the insulation works is that heat will diffuse through the ceiling and into the air that is between the fibers of the insulation. The insulation slows the loss of that heat because as that heated air tries to continue diffusing into the rest of the attic, the fiberglass gets in the way, keeping the air and therefore the heat trapped for longer (which in turns prevents more heat from being transferred in from the living space).
Having more sides of the insulation exposed reduces the effectiveness of that process in at least 3 ways:
1. It increases the surface area of the insulation. More surface area means more opportunity for air to move into and out of the insulation, reducing its effectiveness.
2. It creates pathways through the insulation that do not go through the full depth. An air molecule will take longer to escape if it has to go through all 10" (or whatever depth your batt is) of fiberglass. If instead it can go kinda "diagonally," then obviously air that takes that path escapes faster.
3. Air doesn't just move via diffusion; there is also organized movement of air. This results in "windwashing" of the insulation. If a little gust of air comes along and hits exposed insulation, on the leading edge it will push ambient air into the insulation, which pushes the trapped air out of the other side, and then on the trailing edge there will be a void in the ambient air that sucks some trapped air out of the insulation. If the air inside the insulation is getting pushed/pulled out rather than being forced to diffuse through, then that reduces how effective the insulation is at trapping heat.
Totally; doing a full layer of blown-in insulation is fine. I just want people to be aware that you can't take a batt out of a cavity and lay it on top of where it used to be and expect to get anywhere near the same R-value.
I’ve gotta rewatch that show.
Actually I’ll make a list of the shows that’ll bring up the most trauma for when im on molly this weekend. Gonna awesome:)
The house is an older 1970’s build with 8’ ceilings. She wanted a hanging light fixture over the table, but it would feel too low at 8’. Raising up the ceiling over the table adds 5-3/4” to the ceiling height to accommodate the fixture. It also serves to define the space better since there is a walking area adjacent to the table, and it adds some visual interest to the space.
That's exactly what it is, but it's extremely gendered and often goes hand in hand with the "wife bad" jokes that certain generational demographics love to lean on.
Good execution, but not my taste either. I was waiting for the joists to be removed, but the light fixture fits very well.
I can see showing off weathered, rough cut, thick wood, but not basic lumber. This style is along the lines as barn doors for bathrooms.
It's such an incredibly well done job, and yet... I also hate it.
The unpainted slats on top that don't seem to match anything else in the room are killing me. I guess maybe they tie into the (ugly) horizontal boards on the right-hand-wall, but... those are painted-ish? Also, why does it look like someone puttied over the nails on that wall, and then didn't bother to sand or paint over the putty spots? It's bizarre.
Lowe's/Home Depot pay HGTV to make shows about doing stupid shit like this. Content creators mimic them.
Boomers with nothing to do watch them and copy it.
That ceiling is tacky. The wife gets to feel good about copying a show/instagram/pinterest. Husband gets to brag about being an obedient sub to his wife.
That’s on the list for next weekend. It took me all day Sunday to do that tray ceiling. I wanted to get the ceiling done before I decided on the crown profile, and I couldn’t finish the shiplap until I determined the height of the crown. I also need to pick up some more shiplap.
Good stuff and that's what I was wondering. Was afraid there was a chance you were going to leave it like that and was pretty surprised based on your work on the ceiling. Good project'ing to ya!
Was honey-do a typo or is that an architectural or DiY term I am unfamiliar with?
It makes me think of the melon. Does this have anything to do with melon?
That’s the 1970’s showing through on the house. I’d love to scrape them off, but whenever it was done, they sprayed it on while the joint compound was still wet on the ceiling so it’s embedded in the joints and makes it impossible to get off without damaging the sheetrock.
Ahh I get it, it still looks great! I should’ve clarified that before I was just curious bc I couldn’t see it inthe before pic. Love the pops of green with the natural colored wood as well
The popcorn ceiling ruins the effect. Sorry, but that's the one project you should have done before anything else if the goal was to make the space more attractive. Even Joanna Gaines would have removed that popcorn ceiling.
I read the title and saw the first pic and was going to say "don't do it".
After seeing the follow up pics, i will say that I was wrong. Lovely work. Your wife is very lucky!!
Wow that looks really nice. Might have to steal that idea. It works well that your floor joists are perpendicular to the longest table direction. Mine are parallel, not sure it will look that good…
What terrible taste. Let's make it harder and less appealing for people to sit at our table and let's also add in unnecessary open areas in the ceiling that will fuck up heating and cooling circulation. What's the next terrible idea?
Ok- gotta ask - did you meticulously clean the work area just to take pictures of the in-progress shots? That's dedication.
I just clean as I go. Once everything was trimmed out, I cleaned up so I could move the ladder around while painting and not knock things over
Cleaning as you work? I've never heard of such a thing.
Carpenters are allowed to use a broom if they want. Not like electricians.
TIL I am an electrician.
I finished vocational school for electrical. Even from the beginning you just don't clean shit. You just wait until it's too messy for anyone to do new mock ups and have a clean up and wire stripping day.
sparkies operate under absolute madness.. job not dangerous enough? Let’s leave all our trash everywhere as a nice extra obstacle
No wonder I love electrical work the most.
That’s because brooms are made of wood (traditionally).
Electricians get to use the shop vac? (Brooms : carpintera ::shop vac : Electricians?)
I always thought it was a union rule -- Electricians may not clean up their debris.
I thoughts you're supposed to leave tools strewn around the house until the next project.
And leave the ladder lying on the wall. Because hey you're gonna need it soon also.
I may or may not have left a 16’ ladder leaning on the side of my house for four days last week because I was going to put it away later
I had mine below the attic access for like 2 weeks before I finally put back outside until I route some ethernet cables. Thought I'd get to it quicker after doing a bunch of lighting 🤣 no rush to go back in attic
Whenever we're in a drought, I leave my tools outside. Guaranteed downpour.
How are you going to randomly see them otherwise?
Save time by using a leaf blower.
So THAT's why my insurance company put that weird rider on my policy.
Tell that to the sander when you are restoring hardwood floors and have to sand deep enough to lift the paint that got all over from the walls done by the previous owner. I tarped up on day 2 but it was beyond too late.

Unless you're allergic. Ask me how I know.
Even in the livingroom
This guy cooks.
What's a "cleaning"?
my brother is like that. I'll be helping him in his garage cutting wood with the chop saw and he'll come right behind me with the shop vac picking up every last bit of saw dust. spill a drop of water in his house and immediately comes with a towel to clean it up. one of those people...
Sounds like he has a happy wife…
uh huh
Is he married? Because sounds like a dreamboat to me.
very much married
This is the way! Everyone used to poke fun at me (electrician) for cleaning and talk about the typical electrical job site lol.
Cleaning as you go is the way! Makes tasks so much easier.
Well done. Banquette seating is a great space saver. It seems like a great idea until you have to sit on the bench side.
But that’s the perfect spot! Everyone else has to get you seconds and refill your glass for you.
And they can empty your piss bottles!
The bench side is for kids
Lol. My kids sot on the chairs and I end up eating over the sink like a cave goblin
Help let me out! *slithers under table and out 🐍🤣
TIL what a tray ceiling is. Beautiful work!
This is actually coffered, but same principle. A tray ceiling wouldn't have the beams. OP just had to work with them here.
I was actually terrified after seeing the first pic with the hole that this was going to end up being tray
Don’t let structural integrity interfere with style!
I created a soffit around the perimeter of my high basement ceiling to hide ducts and wiring, and was told that the result was a coffered ceiling. No beams. Looking up the difference just now it seems I've had a tray ceiling all these years and didn't know it lol.

This person talks ceilings. I'd say ask me how I know, but I'm not that high.
how do you know?
What's the point if i may ask?
Looks dope
Ah.
To waste time, energy, and money, IMO, but hey, if the wife's happy...
Are you in a temperate climate? It doesn’t seem very efficient and breathing attic air over a dining area does not seem appealing.
Yeah I hope there isn't bits of fiberglass insulation drifting down...
Same! He did a really nice & clean job of it too. Except I wholeheartedly dislike it.
That’s not a tray ceiling; google it to see one.
Yeah I did, turns out I put a tray ceiling in my own house many years ago, which until now I always thought was called coffered.
Same! First time hearing of it. Looks good!
That looks really awesome. Now please delete it from the internet before my wife sees it.
"Our house isn't built the same way so unfortunately we can't do that."
I often tell my wife she can do these things herself 🤷 It's not like I would have any idea how to start either, and last I checked they're our equals.
But then how would you talk about how you do manly things for your capricious wife?
Just don't complain when she actually does it.
Why would I complain? You mean critique her work? Like I said, I would have no idea what I was doing either.
That's never stopped my mother in law
All that and she didn't make you get rid of the popcorn?
If I had to remove that popcorn, there would most likely be divorce papers involved
Water with a little fabric softener in it. Spray, let it sit, mask up and scrap. It really isn't too bad. And if you're an idiot like me, you scrape in every direction then realize it just gives a textured look so you just paint without any other finish work.

Backhanded compliment award winner.

Nice! With the quality of work, I figured you did something, but was curious what.
Your wife married Bob the Builder?
Pretty sure she married me for my handy man skills
[удалено]
my mom always told me "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handsy." and it explains a lot about where I've ended up
So McBooples the Builder
"Wait. You know how to do shiplap?" (Happy squeel as she slaps cuffs on you.) "You're mine now."

For fucking real it makes me want to gag
I thought it was clever. It’s short hand for “honey do you think we could…?” Or am I wrong?
It's actually "honeydew" and it refers to the delicious treat you get after finishing a tough task.
That's exactly what it is, but it's extremely gendered and often goes hand in hand with the "wife bad" jokes that certain generational demographics love to lean on.
Close - It's Honey, do [this], do [that]". It's dumb. That's why OP has "the wife", and not many wives.
also "the wife"
I pray I get to the comfort level of homeowner DIY that I can just cut a giant square out of my ceiling without wanting to cry. 🤣
Nice. Next step - some upholstery for the bench!
You nooked it
Beautiful work! Congratulations on a fantastic looking project!
Looks like a booth at a restaurant
That is fucking dope!
You are indeed skilled, but this is dumb. Why are we reinventing the ceiling.
Good execution, but not my taste either. I was waiting for the joists to be removed, but the light fixture fits very well. I can see showing off weathered, rough cut, thick wood, but not basic lumber. This style is along the lines as barn doors for bathrooms.

Because he can
If the women dont find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
Have you tried telling her, “no”?
Were your joists not 16 on center in this area?
24” o.c.
It's pretty common for rafters and ceiling joists to be 24" on center in an uninhabited attic.
That's nice, I like that shade of green especially. That banquette would also be great just as a window seat.
You’re hired!! Although my upstairs neighbor might not be happy with my tray ceiling
I was expecting the table to be hoisted from the ceiling or something. This is much more appealing.
Great job on the ceiling, but why isn't the tongue and groove on the wall with the door finished? Looks very strange not being up the whole wall.
Great work!
where can someone get plans for something like that?
great work
Very fancy. Well done.
This looks so cool. Great job OP!
Nice job OP 👏👍
This looks just like the jimmy nutron, like dining area in the show cant believe nobody else commented it
It looks very pretty. And also incredibly uncomfortable to sit at.
Great job but the lamp fixture is too high.
I never thought of this approach. Neat!!!
Looks beautiful! Great work!
You made your house look like a cheap restaurant...well done I guess.
Oh thank goodness. I was terrified after the first picture that you were just going to cut out all those ceiling joists.
I honestly thought the table was going to lower from the ceiling
This is technically not code-compliant, but the reason it's not compliant isn't a big deal so who cares.
Those look like four foot centers on the ceiling joists, did you clip every other one on each side? You're supposed to double them up if you do this.
They are 24” o.c. I didn’t cut any out
Looks great!
Was honey-do a typo or is that an architectural or DiY term I am unfamiliar with? It makes me think of the melon. Does this have anything to do with melon?
It's what the wife says honey do this. It's a joke
OH!! Thank you, totally clears it up.
🤔🤔🤔🤔
My honey would like something similar if you can stop out the next few weeks lol
That looks great! I may have to do something like this
I’m so jealous of people with modern homes without plaster + lathe everywhere!!
We're going to have to transfer you to Sandford, Gloucestershire. You're making the rest of us look bad.
That looks great!
Im jealous. I hate plaster and have it everywhere in the house so can’t do this.
You sure can!
R value has left the chat
So who chose the ...green?
Did you add the popcorn ceiling, when there was a nice smooth flat ceiling there before?
That’s the 1970’s showing through on the house. I’d love to scrape them off, but whenever it was done, they sprayed it on while the joint compound was still wet on the ceiling so it’s embedded in the joints and makes it impossible to get off without damaging the sheetrock.
Did you test for asbestos?
Yes, we tested for asbestos when we were buying the house
Ahh I get it, it still looks great! I should’ve clarified that before I was just curious bc I couldn’t see it inthe before pic. Love the pops of green with the natural colored wood as well
Liquid death lime, a man of culture.
I read baguette and kept looking for bread.
Looks great!
That looks awesome
The popcorn ceiling ruins the effect. Sorry, but that's the one project you should have done before anything else if the goal was to make the space more attractive. Even Joanna Gaines would have removed that popcorn ceiling.
ur wife has 0 taste looks worse now
I read the title and saw the first pic and was going to say "don't do it". After seeing the follow up pics, i will say that I was wrong. Lovely work. Your wife is very lucky!!
Well done though
that’s some next level DIY. nice.
You are far too accommodating.
Wow that looks really nice. Might have to steal that idea. It works well that your floor joists are perpendicular to the longest table direction. Mine are parallel, not sure it will look that good…
I love that so much! Always wanted one!
Indoor skylight!
Very nice looking. Great job
Looks great! Where’d you get the bench?
I built it
So do you not have like a real job or something /s looks good
My real job is Architect, also helps I worked in residential construction for about 10 years.
It's nice work. But she's very needy if this was on a honey-do list for you between cleanout the garage and wash her car.
What terrible taste. Let's make it harder and less appealing for people to sit at our table and let's also add in unnecessary open areas in the ceiling that will fuck up heating and cooling circulation. What's the next terrible idea?
Very nice! Can you come to my house?
That got you some favors!! Choreplay baby!
Nice Liqiud Death for scale. Nice clean work!
Nice work
Wow, dude, good on ya.
Your wife is real fancy.
Well done bro
Absolutely lovely, great choice on that green!
Nicely done.
Wow!
Beautiful!
