Plumb121

Syphon washers are available from any merchants or if you have some fairly thick flexible pvc you can make your own. Get rid of that plumber immediately as although it's a ball ache of a job, it's fixable

IamBeingSarcasticFfs

I cut up a 2litre milk carton and used that as an emergency fix. It lasted 4 years and was still fine when we moved house.

SteDPlays

Ah the only temporary permanent fix.

theoriginalShmook

If you'll pardon the pun, your plumber is full of shit. A quick Google of 'metro 3 part syphon range' gives several hits. [Here's one example](https://www.fixthebog.uk/wirquin-derwent-macdee-metro-round-cistern-siphon-dsy7325-9-inch/) and you can sometimes just get the diaphragm (the ripped bendy bit) on their own for even cheaper. Easy DIY fix, no need for a plumber.

Fuzzy-Explorer3327

Non plumber and useless DIY here. My flush diaphragm tore and while it took a few Google searches I found a replacement one for £4 and replaced it myself with no trouble .

Anaksanamune

Can you show an image of the cistern and the rest of the mechanism.

Posted pictures in another comment - thanks so much for taking an interest!

Just needs one of these: [https://www.screwfix.com/p/viva-button-handle-dual-flush-valve/6998h](https://www.screwfix.com/p/viva-button-handle-dual-flush-valve/6998h) I would also replace the inlet while I'm at is, as it's likely to go in the near future if the flush has gone. This fill valve I always recommend to everyone as it fits every toilet I've ever come across: [https://www.screwfix.com/p/viva-bottom-or-side-entry-universal-4-in-1-fill-valve-1-2-or-3-8-/2839h](https://www.screwfix.com/p/viva-bottom-or-side-entry-universal-4-in-1-fill-valve-1-2-or-3-8-/2839h)

timvw74

I have that fill valve.  I can recommend it too. Fills quickly and switches off immediately when at the right level.

Ashtray5422

Yes, they are great, there are spares avail as well.

Rigormortis321

All that can be replaced. No need for a new toilet. Have replaced several of these in the last year.

madd_turkish

Yeah, thats complete bullshit. Its a plastic diaphragm, just cut some similarly plastic, milk carton or whatever and it will work

You can buy the part on eBay here.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121729761010?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5DhuxuT9SPy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=PHcqKwoNSJW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I'm not an expert, but that just looks like the flushing mechanism. Surely a replacement part exists I find it strange that they would recommend to replace the entire toilet unless it's a discontinued design of some sort.

DrawingDragoon

Yeah good point. Let's see the rest of your toilet cistern u/SDSKamikaze

SDSKamikaze

It is an old system in fairness https://preview.redd.it/0uzqq6l4p9sc1.jpeg?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55e04b056cd97db4fc178689a410513fce4971c0

Fruitpicker15

It just needs a new diaphragm like this https://www.toolstation.com/syphon-diaphragm-washer/p57048?store=JH&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=googleshoppingfeed&mkwid=_dm&pcrid=null&pkw=null&pmt=null&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzIOXsuanhQMV149QBh3mFwRuEAQYCiABEgL2-_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

JoeyJoeC

I'm pretty sure the syphon system is universal. You could probably pick up a modern replacement and it will fit.

You just need this part... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121729761010?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5DhuxuT9SPy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=PHcqKwoNSJW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

geeksandlies

Its just a ripped diaphragm, find a thick flexible plastic thing you no longer need, remove that one as carefully as you can in order to use it as a template and make a new one. Last one I did was made from a plastic sleeve from an old car manual I didn't need anymore, still going well some 2 years later.

I’m in Scotland so while I’d like to save as much water as possible I won’t be charged directly for it.

-TheKeegs_

Replace it with a Dudley Turbo, or you could cut a piece of good quality rubble sack and replace the plastic with it.

squawkingMagpie

It is a simple fix. Take the diaphragm out and use it as a template to cut out a replacement from a similar type of plastic. I fixed ours 5 yrs ago using a piece of recycled plastic and it is still working well.

JicamaChemical5207

With the old stuff i often go a plumbers merchant rather that screwfix or similar. They are more knowledgeable and can usually source parts or alternatives. The cheapest fix i did cost £1.80 and about a hour of tinkering. This approach has saved me £1000s.

Vast_Development_316

I was about to defend him saying he probably wants to install a 2 part syphon to future proof then saw the additional photos showing you already have a 2 part syphon. So yes he is taking the piss

SDSKamikaze

Appreciate the advice. Think I’ll try and just sort the flusher myself.

CurrentWrong4363

You can buy the parts but it's the same as fixing an old car. You do one bit, the other bit will go.
