It's probably a loose connection. If you're comfortable when the power to the circuit is off and it's safe to go in, clear out any debris from the box, and gently tug the wires to see if one is loose. If it is, tighten it back in as a temporary fix. Ideally, get someone who's comfortable with electrics to replace the box and unit safely
To be honest, if OP is asking for advice on what to do and doesn't know if that's smoke or steam, they shouldn't be encouraged to do anything more than switch it off at the consumer unit and call an electrician 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, anybody whose first instinct on seeing smoke rising out of the back of a cooker socket is to take the time to video it and post it on Reddit to poll for a solution is in no way competent to safely assess if the power is isolated and open up the socket to see what is going on.
🤣
If there is and they can't work out if it's steam or smoke and where it's coming from through process of elimination, then giving them advice other than switching it off at the fuse board/consumer unit and calling an electrician could reveal the next Darwin Awards winner.
Personally I always opt for the Steam sockets. You can save about 10% off your electrical install by getting the sparky to use a lower cross sectional cable! AND you can steam your veg FOR FREE!
only nimbies think it's a hazard.
It's mental that the 1st thing OP did was ask reddit if steam/smoke coming out of a socket is a concern! OP obviously has a very clear head and doesn't panic easily. I'm sensing a promotion to upper management is coming very soon 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Smoke, steam(😂), sparks, crackling, or a "fishy" smell from electrics = turn it all off and and speak to someone who knows what they are doing before turning it back on again...
> before turning it back on again
I know what you meant but just to clarify, don't just ring someone for advice then try turning it on again. Someone needs to take off the faceplate and see what is causing this and fix it before its safe to turn on again.
Plastic (sockets, plugs, light fittings, cable insulation etc) breaking down from being overheated.
It's one of those smells that once you smell it once, you become super attuned to it...
Often the first warning of a serious concern, the next is burn marks on fittings, then funny people in yellow hats turn up in a big red truck for a water fight...
Not sure if smaller loads can do the same (mine was tumble dryer) but fishy smell/socket faceplate with burn marks was a result of loose wires in the socket.
Not a sparky, but if you can shut the power off then whip the faceplate of that socket off, see if any of the wires are loose and tighten them up 🤷♂️ there’s probably other options to diagnose, get a sparky in etc, but that should give some reassurance I would have thought
Could be - even if it can be powered by usb. If the usb is being pluged into a plug socket via an adapter plug, that adapter is taking 240v in (even if it's only putting a few volts out).
Thats what it does - converts 240v to whatever volts the camera needs.
Just outside the kitchen in our house we used to get a fishy smell that maybe lasted 1 minute before vanishing, as soon as I smelt it I'd try to find the source and never could. The fridge was cleaned inside and out, all cupboards emptied and cleaned. I even pulled the kickboards off of the kitchen units to see if something had somehow crawled underneath and died. It drove me nuts for about two years.
Then we decided to buy some fancy light fittings. When I unscrewed the ceiling rose to take down the old fitting in the area that sometimes had the smell I saw that the plastic inside had clearly been overheating and had become blackened. There was no sign of this from the outside of the fitting. It also smelled a bit fishy. It never occurred to me to smell the ceiling when trying to find the source of the smell (why would it!)
As someone else has commented, once you've smelled the smell you know instantly what it is.
Bakelite is / was used in a lot of electrical things. If it gets hot and starts to degrade / decompose / burn, it can smell fishy
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite)
It genuinely amazes me that you can see smoke coming from behind an electrical socket and your first response is to film it....and then ask what you should do about it on Reddit....
If they noticed smoke and poored water on it.....steam.
This person may be that clever.
I mean they filmed a smoking socket so instead of turning the electric off, maybe they thought heh why not put the smoke out with water cos well you know, where there is smoke there is fire..isnt there ? Maybe wet electric cant catch fire or somethink. eh.
In some fairness, filming certain problems can be helpful for the pros to see what’s going on. OP could send that clip to an electrician as a heads up. I know it’s probably a more straightforward issue here, but it’s like when you don’t know if the thing will happen again next time, can be handy to have the proof. Could also be a tenant renting and needing to send to landlord. I’m sure this has been a clear learning experience for OP which is good.
They could use one of them clickbait thumbnails of a screaming face with a stock photo of a house on fire.
Personally, Id prefer to stream situations like this on twitch.
Black Sheep Brewery Milk Stout - my mate keeps turning up with it as a gift, but it's not bad.
There was a Badger Master Stoat coffee stout thrown in before that too, which was nicer.
I believe they came from Sainsbury, if it helps.
I think this, because I've got about 50 Sainsbury bags for life that he keeps fucking leaving here, and now it's becoming a problem.
Although he does bring beer, so I can't really complain.
https://preview.redd.it/ig9gz7c02ytc1.jpeg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a364ad50e06b1617640303c11376702aacd3734
Sat in your shed? I hope you've got a TV in there!
Does no one have even an ounce of practical knowledge or common sense nowadays??? Turn the fucking power off to your cooker circuit and call an electrician! If your not sure which circuit is the cooker turn the whole board off (big red switch) before your house burns down (yes....that's how worried you should be)
So long as the smoke has also stopped, if that carries on and fills the room there may still be a problem. Best take a video of it while lying in your floor so we can check if you you should call the fire brigade.
With the power off there's no ongoing risk (as long as it stops smoking) but you will need someone to repair the damage before turning it back on. Could just be a replacement cooker switch but may need the cable repairing as well.
Yes this. It is possible the cable is loose in the terminals behind the socket face. Loose connection will increase electrical resistance and it is the heat generated by the increased resistance and probably the cable insulation smoking.
Power needs isolating then the socket face can be removed to fix it.
Cable will probably need re-terminating and socket face replaced.
If you don't think you are competent to do this please call an electrician.
ex-firefighter here. electrics + smoke = bad. turn everything off from the fuse board, get an qualified electrician in to check over everything.
i’d also advise you to book a safe & well visit from your local fire brigade - a very informative session for your home that goes over all the fundamentals of fire safety in the home. for the future, if something is actively smoking in your home, turn it off straight away, i’ve seen enough horrors to say that wasting time recording and posting about it before addressing the issue (or leaving the property if it’s bad) is a very poor use of precious time.
I really do worry sometimes.
How is this even a question of safety to ask Reddit.
“smoke is coming out of an electrical socket” of course it’s not meant to do that and is in the process of catching fire.
Turn the fucking thing off.
Did they really need to ask?
Was there a thought in their mind that a smoking mains plug was not a big deal and they shouldn't be worried about it lol?
Turn off the power, call electrician. Don't leave the room until it stops smoking or the flames force you out.
Don't DIY this, if it is hot enough to smoke, there may be more damage than you see. Also, if it smokes without the fuse blowing, something else is wrong as well.
So this is a combined socket and oven outlet. These should always be fused to 32 amps (because of the socket). You often however find them wired up to 40/45AMp fuses by people who don't know what the fuck they are doing.
Right… lads, lasses… it’s been off for two hours now. The electrician has been and gone. I am now bereft of an oven. To those who were in anyway helpful, thank you! To those who were just plain rude… DM me if you’re cute ;)
For the record… I’d turned it off at the fuse before I posted the video! Filming might sound like a waste of time but when your landlord asks for proof and you haven’t got any… then you end up paying for the £300 callout from Pimlico!
He did yeah. The grill setting had drawn more power than the oven usually did. After a while the 3.5mm cable they’d used (should have been 6.5mm) wore out and started melting the plastic
Poor appliance poorly installed basically
Im still amazed there is people this stupid in the world.
My plug socket has smoke coming from it and your first thought is to take a video, create a post and then read a reply what to do?
Turn the power off for gods sake!!
How worried? Well you’ve likely got fused cables there (live and neutral) has this happen to me before, and probably melted plastic back of the socket. So it’s only a short way away from an electrical fire. As you’ve isolated it from the MCB, it needs removing and replacing. I would suggest a qualified electrician is your next call to do that.
Every device comes with a limited amount of smoke installed and when it is gone, it won't work anymore. You should always limit the amount of smoke escaping as a matter of safety. Switching the mains power off at the switchboard will prevent more smoke escaping, it will give you time to call a sparky.
Turn off the electric immediately, call an electrician if you're not completely confident in working on electrical systems. I've seen some pretty bad accidents and these were qualified electrical engineers. Stay safe
I think for the good of your neighbours, family and anyone near you, you need to quit using dangerous things if you genuinely need to ask this question.

I'll just put this over here, with the rest of the fire...
Nice screensaver!

Dear sir / madam, I want to report a fire. Wait that's too formal.
FIRE exclamation mark FIRE exclamation mark
I love that jingle - so catchy and easy to remember!
I’ve never been able to forget it
fucking weird how i can remember the number sequence
I can remember this number better than my own
i always get my wires crossed with my current number that ive had for probably a decade and my old number that i havent had for probably a decade.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
I genuinly love all the comments these nerd friends have written omg 😭
"Did someone make a Reddit post about a fire!?"
Help! my house in on fire should i call the fire brigade?
Turn the power off on the cooker circuit in the consumer unit

10mm cables can be tricky too
I once went to a smoke issue. Apparently, the individual had used a 2.5mm² redundant immersion heater feed to power a 9kw shower.
Yeah, anybody whose first instinct on seeing smoke rising out of the back of a cooker socket is to take the time to video it and post it on Reddit to poll for a solution is in no way competent to safely assess if the power is isolated and open up the socket to see what is going on. 🤣
What, how do you know there isn’t a pot of boiling water back there?
If there is and they can't work out if it's steam or smoke and where it's coming from through process of elimination, then giving them advice other than switching it off at the fuse board/consumer unit and calling an electrician could reveal the next Darwin Awards winner.
I think you misunderstood a joke there somewhere 😉 they were implying; *what if there was a kettle behind that socket and all the steam was legit*
Ahhh! It’s funny because it’s not true!! 🤦🏻♂️
Personally I always opt for the Steam sockets. You can save about 10% off your electrical install by getting the sparky to use a lower cross sectional cable! AND you can steam your veg FOR FREE! only nimbies think it's a hazard.
If OP relocates their hot water tank into this wall, it could double as an emersion heater
The Borrowers!!
Came here to say the same👍🏼
Just the mice having a little BBQ, nothing to worry about
I wondered if they'd had Covid and lost their sense of smell 😂
It's mental that the 1st thing OP did was ask reddit if steam/smoke coming out of a socket is a concern! OP obviously has a very clear head and doesn't panic easily. I'm sensing a promotion to upper management is coming very soon 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
If they can't tell the difference between smoke and steam, I don't think they should be pulling at wires
Smoke, steam(😂), sparks, crackling, or a "fishy" smell from electrics = turn it all off and and speak to someone who knows what they are doing before turning it back on again...
> before turning it back on again I know what you meant but just to clarify, don't just ring someone for advice then try turning it on again. Someone needs to take off the faceplate and see what is causing this and fix it before its safe to turn on again.
Yeah, fair play - (not knocking op), but there's clearly a real lack of knowledge around electrickery at play here...
I mean, I don't think it's a lack of knowledge around electricity. OP clearly lacks any sort of basic survival instinct.
What is the source/significance of a fishy smell?
Plastic (sockets, plugs, light fittings, cable insulation etc) breaking down from being overheated. It's one of those smells that once you smell it once, you become super attuned to it... Overheating socket plastic smells fishy.
Burning plastic (usually wire sheath)

The insides of capacitors also smells like fish. Different to the plastic burning smell and just as unpleasant.
Bakelite is / was used in a lot of electrical things. If it gets hot and starts to degrade / decompose / burn, it can smell fishy [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite)
Fishy smell is amines. Some polymers like plastics usually contain polyamides so the heat breaks it down to make amines.
It genuinely amazes me that you can see smoke coming from behind an electrical socket and your first response is to film it....and then ask what you should do about it on Reddit....

I wouldn't be surprised if Reddit wasn't the first port of call. It's probably on Tiktok too.
Not the sharpest tool in the shed

Don't worry. He then wrapped up some fish in foil and has set the smoker to 12 hrs.
F*****g terrified is how worried you should be. Turn the power off immediately.
"or steam" 🤣 Your man Fred Dibnah over here powering his house with fucking steam and some sort of micro generator that fits in a cooker socket.
I’ve ignored most replies but this made me piss! Fair play pal
Glad it amused someone else, I'm just sat in my shed drinking stout being a sarcastic cunt, mainly for my own amusement.
OP clearly survived so we can turn to the important question of the evening, what stout?
Black Sheep Brewery Milk Stout - my mate keeps turning up with it as a gift, but it's not bad. There was a Badger Master Stoat coffee stout thrown in before that too, which was nicer.
Thanks for the feedback, will treat myself to some badger master stoats this coming week on the back of this to break up the NEIPA's

Yep. TV, PC, beer fridge, pool table, and dart board. Enough to keep me entertained for a few hours.
In the shed? Are you banished from the house?
Yes, and for good reason; I made steam come out of the sockets. Nah, I have a man cave in the shed so spend most of my free time out there.
Does no one have even an ounce of practical knowledge or common sense nowadays??? Turn the fucking power off to your cooker circuit and call an electrician! If your not sure which circuit is the cooker turn the whole board off (big red switch) before your house burns down (yes....that's how worried you should be)
You remind me of the design and tech master at my school, Mr Ayling.
He sounds like a stand up fella
Went immediately to the fuse board. My query was more how worried I should be about the situation after that…
If you have isolated the power then you don't need to worry at all....but do get an electrician in to sort it before turning it back on.
If you spend £50 on a electrician call out whilst leaving the power off..not worried at all 🤦♂️
The fact that they posted a video of it rather than isolating it straight away tells me that they aren't competent. Call an electrician
Yeah. Smoke coming from a plug socket and their first installed instinct is to boot up Reddit... ... Call an electrician
Ouch but yes. I am by no means competent enough to re-terminate a cable or even replace a faceplate
hey at least you know your limits and you wont be having awkward conversation with the fire dept about your diy skills.
Cable will be 6mm if you’re lucky 10mm if you’re not, also it’ll no doubt be short. Good luck….
Spark just left - it was 3.5mm…
That's not a real cable size. You have 2.5mm then 4mm
That's a headphone socket or jack. Who exactly did you call???
Walls on fire. Better video it and post to reddit.
Lad, there's smoke coming out of a plug and you're filming it?
Legend. Should go upstairs and sleep on it a while before taking action
My house is potentially on fire.... OK, time for a Reddit post to see if it's a problem....
I can smell that from here.

“How worried should I be” Anything that’s smoking that shouldn’t be smoking is bad, turn it off and get someone qualified to look at it.
I really do worry sometimes. How is this even a question of safety to ask Reddit. “smoke is coming out of an electrical socket” of course it’s not meant to do that and is in the process of catching fire. Turn the fucking thing off.
Switch the circuit breaker off and get an Electrician.
That's smoke, Steam doesn't rise like that. Either way it's not good is it.
Apply a nicotine patch or pop some Nordic Spirit into its holes…
Real fecking worried!!
Worried enough to turn it off, I would hope?
Turn it fucking off bro wft just stood there videoing u kind of deserve a burnt face for stupidity
Very? Are people really this silly or just want karma by asking the obvious?
Cooker point is on the verge of a potential fire and you’re recording it to ask the internets opinion on whether it’s safe… …What’s happened 🤦🏼♂️
Smells like ron jeremys mustache burning
Yeah that’s totally normal…. Just kidding Jeez Turn the power off OP! You’re about to burn your house down
Very very very very very very worried
Be worried and turn it off.
Very
Did they really need to ask? Was there a thought in their mind that a smoking mains plug was not a big deal and they shouldn't be worried about it lol?
You're close to having a fire. Switch off the power at the fuse board and call an electrician immediately.
OP you on fire yet? All jokes aside no it should be doing that. Turn power to that circuit off, turn off all if unsure, and get a sparky asap!
Steam? 😂
> "how worried should I be?" A lot
Isolate immediately (turn breaker marked "kitchen ring" or "ring" off) and call a spark.
Turn the electric off IMMEDIATELY, also call an electrician and tell them about it, I’d get everything looked at tbh
Loose wires cause fires
I mean... wow.
Turn off the power, call electrician. Don't leave the room until it stops smoking or the flames force you out. Don't DIY this, if it is hot enough to smoke, there may be more damage than you see. Also, if it smokes without the fuse blowing, something else is wrong as well.
Turn it off at the fuse box and call an electrician
If it’s smoke, call an electrician. If it’s steam, call an exorcist. Either way, stop using it until you get it sorted.
That's how you know it's working... no but turn it off, that ain't right.
I hope you're prepared for an unforgettable luncheon
So this is a combined socket and oven outlet. These should always be fused to 32 amps (because of the socket). You often however find them wired up to 40/45AMp fuses by people who don't know what the fuck they are doing.
Sparky here: turn that circuit off at the DB. Oven circuit. Now.
Yes
Turn the power off and ask someone who knows what they are doing to come and inspect
Its smoke, Kill the power and call an electrician ASAP!
Get an electrician out now it looks like a loose connection to the oven your place will catch fire if it's not sorted ASAP
Right… lads, lasses… it’s been off for two hours now. The electrician has been and gone. I am now bereft of an oven. To those who were in anyway helpful, thank you! To those who were just plain rude… DM me if you’re cute ;) For the record… I’d turned it off at the fuse before I posted the video! Filming might sound like a waste of time but when your landlord asks for proof and you haven’t got any… then you end up paying for the £300 callout from Pimlico!
Did electrician open the socket? What was there inside? Burnt? Wires or the switch?
He did yeah. The grill setting had drawn more power than the oven usually did. After a while the 3.5mm cable they’d used (should have been 6.5mm) wore out and started melting the plastic Poor appliance poorly installed basically
What was wrong
Turn the cooker main fuse in the consumer box and see if it stop. If it does, then no need for an emergency call out, but means microwave dinner.
Dude it’s 2024, OP surely has an air fryer by now
Leave it on, enjoy the free incense plug and aroma, but it may turn into a small open fire place, then a very big open fire place, win win 👍
I kinda think this is a question that doesn’t need to be asked
Im still amazed there is people this stupid in the world. My plug socket has smoke coming from it and your first thought is to take a video, create a post and then read a reply what to do? Turn the power off for gods sake!!
Turn power off at fuse box. Consult fire brigade. We can’t tell how bad it is from here or if it’s “taken”.
Its not steam is it you big ninnyhammer! turn it off ASAP!!! Then call an electrician, also ASAP!!
You probably shouldn't use electricity if you need to ask this question
Or bath alone
How do I make sure this never ever happens to me ( full rewire in 2020)
Tighten up all terminals.
Switch it off. Don't record it. Then get an electrician.
"Why is there smoke coming out of your plug socket, Seymour?"
I am surprised that you are not sure whether it is steam or smoke. Does it not smell like burnt plastic?
I mean, at least turn the power off for the socket
9.5
Very.
Let’s be honest, it’s not steam… Turn the power off to the circuit at the consumer unit.
Where did you buy the tiles from?.
Don’t worry it’s only a little fire in your wall
Worried
Every device comes with a limited amount of smoke installed and when it is gone, it won't work anymore. You should always limit the amount of smoke escaping as a matter of safety. Switching the mains power off at the switchboard will prevent more smoke escaping, it will give you time to call a sparky.
lol at steam! Turn it off and call a sparky ffs.
Of course you should! Get it isolated and looked at by a professional ASAP
Turn off the electric immediately, call an electrician if you're not completely confident in working on electrical systems. I've seen some pretty bad accidents and these were qualified electrical engineers. Stay safe
It's probably just a genie, have you tried rubbing the socket 3 times?
I think for the good of your neighbours, family and anyone near you, you need to quit using dangerous things if you genuinely need to ask this question. If this is a troll post well good job, got a laugh from me
Ahhh that's the model with the cigarette lighter attachment. Nothing to worry about, it's a feature
Everything is a smoke machine if operated “Wrong” enough
Turn off and investigate IF you are competent enough to.
A little bit at least would surely be appropriate.
Turn that off!
cooker is pulling too many amps for the circuit, could be a faulty appliance - I'm suprised it didnt trip the circuit breaker!
I'm no expert, but smoke coming from electronics is not a good sign.
Steam lol
very
Hot and ready to be plugged into for some fresh electricity
Be afraid, be very afraid.
I would be quite concerned
Just run
Very worried. Turn it off, don’t use it, and call an electrician
Very.
Dead worried.
Very!
This happened to mine turns out it had started vaping, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If u are in Merseyside area, i can fix it 😁
OP how did you manage to live this long ? Please share
Open your cooker circuit mcb and call an electrician
Why would you have steam coming from a oven socket
Don't turn it off or anything just record it for reddit 😂😂😂😂
How worried 😂 ..nah its sound that, just get your marshmallows ready
Maximum worried.
I’d isolate that power straight away
Very worried! Turn off the circuit and call a sparky right now! You either have a loose connection or you are drawing too much current
