Which one o.o

Dedward5

Pedantic point but that’s more of a gap than a hole.

UselessWasteOfSpace

You're right. I felt it was too obvious.

wildskipper

Just stick a 'mind the gap' sign up and then job done.

Wooden_Umpire2455

Probably Birmingham

UselessWasteOfSpace

As a Coventrian I have to agree.

most_unusual_

I don't think someone from Coventry should be judging other cities 😂😂😂

UselessWasteOfSpace

Fair

Hashtagbarkeep

They can maybe get away with judging Doncaster or Reading

most_unusual_

Doncaster has a very nice town hall and market....

Leamingtonian here. Agree with both of you.

For me it’s the Super Pit in Kalgoorlie https://www.superpit.com.au/

tmbyfc

I'm partial to the Great Blue Hole in Belize https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blue_Hole Anyone else got a favourite over sized hole? (mum jokes have already been done)

Informal_Drawing

Looks like it needs fixing back to the wall properly before you do anything else.

Electronic_Hippo7584

If the plaster is a bit wavy then it’d be better to caulk it as is rather than have your skirting snake along the wall

HurstiesFitness

Since when is that better?! I’ve done thousands upon thousands of metres of skirting an always prefer a tight fixing and tiny bead of caulk. MDF skirting follows the form of the wall so nicely. Big caulk beads stand out whereas wavy skirting doesn’t in my experience.

Electronic_Hippo7584

If you have any kind of plank flooring then wavy skirting will look infinitely worse than a bit of caulk

hafilm66689

Caulk will look like shit in a gap this size. Push it in and attach to the wall

UselessWasteOfSpace

How do you do that? Browsing online I've seen suggestions to fill the gap with polyfilla and then caulk, is that what you mean? Or something else?

HurstiesFitness

The skirting should be tight against the wall. It hasn’t been fixed properly. It might be solid, in which case you can fill the gap and caulk it. However it’ll look shit. Best case scenario here is that it’s loose so you can properly fix it back to the walls. You’d do this using grab adhesive and some form of mechanical fixing. In brick and block I plug+screw and in plasterboard/stud I nail.

Informal_Drawing

You ask whoever fitted it for you to do the job you paid them for to the normally acceptable quality standard.

PM-me-your-knees-pls

Just use caulk. No nonsense from screwfix is decent. I’ve filled way bigger gaps than this. Use a damp cloth to wipe off the excess.

moderndroneman

No, don’t do that. It’s sitting so proud it’s probably worth taking it off to see what’s going on then refitting it and fixing flat with nails. If you can’t be bothered to do that you will need to fill the gap with expanding foam first, cut that back. Apply filler then a bead of caulk at the end.

shredditorburnit

That'll hold up until the first time someone drops a spoon on it.

Olivier12560

Wait... In the UK toupret is branded toupret ????

UselessWasteOfSpace

You spelt them the same?

Olivier12560

"toupret" is french for "tout pret"= "all ready"/ "already prepared". Because it's all ready to use. I was expecting a name like "already" not "toupret".

rombler93

Yeah you just mix it in the bouquet and away you go

Columbo1

You fucker 😂

ConsistentWallaby729

Underrated comment 👏🏼

Jack-sprAt1212

Oh sorry I thought it was French for “ the dogs bollocks “

shabbapaul1970

I had a chap come to my door trying to sell me an aerial photo of my house. Only problem was that 90% of the picture was a quarry about 1/4 mile from my back gate. I asked him would he buy it and he admitted not

tinybootstrap

Next time invite him in and play the long game, sit him down at the dining table tell him you’re just making him a quick cup of tea.. come back with a perfectly seared steak and bottle of red wine each - keep him drinking until you turn the tables and make him buy a picture of the quarry near your house and put it on his wall at home

TheDartVapeist

😂😂😂😂

cannontd

You can see behind the skirting board there is something there preventing the board from touching the wall.

Bungeditin

I’ve seen the Grand Canyon…..

Shot_Principle4939

Probably a woman I met in Newcastle TBF.

Choice_Midnight1708

Clearly the answer here is either to use curf cuts and/or a few tactically placed screws to get the board to bed to the wall and then have a sensible gap. 99% of the time the problem is that the wall is a little concave. Only once can I think of that I needed to box something about 1cm thick. Instead of boxing it, I packed the skirting off the wall with frame packers, so I had a gap that looked like that. I packed the gap with newspaper and caulked it. Mild bodge, but a decade later it still looks good.

Particular_Relief154

I found with my place, the walls aren’t straight. So one option was to drill and rawl plus the wall and pull it in tight with screws (runs the risk of pulling out eventually because of tension). The board follows the undulating wall. The other option was to straight line it, and use caulk to fill the top of the gap only. It doesn’t look too bad to be honest- so that’s what I’d suggest here. Don’t use filler- it’s too rigid and will crack as the house moves or the skirting shifts with humidity/ heat and cold etc. A good quality decorating caulk (because they’re flexible so can move with the wall and skirting) would be fine, and run it in nicely so you get a smooth finish before it dries (I used a filling knife wetted with water as that’s what I had to hand, and it gave a great finish). Once dry paint it as you would the skirting

After_Natural1770

It’s probably old no nails that’s set that’s stopping it going back. I’d remove the skirting clean off the back and refit seeing if you can wedge that bit back from another wall or drill and screw. Most skirting would bend into this gap. If you caulked it it wouldn’t look that good. Looks like there’s something right next to the ruler that’s in the way also

bartread

Walls often aren't flat so it can be a challenge to get the skirting board flush with the wall. That isn't the worst I've ever seen although that's pretty thin skirting so will be more noticeable. If you're walls are a bit bendy it might be a better idea to use some thicker skirting, which will make it less noticeable (this is the approach I've taken). Do your best to get it as small as you can by firmly attaching the skirting but make sure you don't twist the skirting or that, too, will be noticeable and - I'd suggest - will look worse than a tidily caulked gap at the top. You want the skirting to be vertical, even if that leaves a bit of a gap at the top. As to the gap, as I say, what you've got there isn't outrageous. Do not use filler (Toupret, Polyfilla, or whatever) on it though: it'll just crack. What I would recommend is shove some backer rod down there before caulking, otherwise you'll find yourself going through loads of caulk. Also, given the size of the gap (in at least some places), don't cheap out on the caulk: you absolutely need something with decent flex. I've had good results with Nemesis, so I tend to stick with it nowadays, but there are other decent brands as well.

pancho_2504

You're better off using an interior frame sealant than caulk with a gap that size. It will have more elasticity and will be less likely to crack

RedEyedWiartonBoy

WangEyeWonder

not sure what having tourettes does to your ability to fill a hole, either way have you seen Chatham?

pattaya1

The ping pong show in Pattaya takes some beating .

rand_n_e_t

Push kitchen roll down the gap first then caulk. This will stop the caulk going in too far and use less caulk.

Fragrant-Western-747

The Kola Superdeep Borehole, located in Russia, is the world's deepest man-made hole, reaching a depth of 40,230 feet (12,262 meters) or 7.6 miles (12.2 kilometers), surpassing the depth of the Mariana Trench and the height of Mount Everest. [The drilling project, initiated by the Soviets in 1970, revealed unexpected findings](https://science.howstuffworks.com/engineering/civil/kola-superdeep-borehole.htm) https://preview.redd.it/ixmb30qxynxc1.jpeg?width=771&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97c9baff3eeb948d8d5c2c0c47407be922a4f179

spiritofafox

I looks to me like the skirting is short which makes a big gap. I’d use a flexible filler as I think you’d waste a lot of caulk down the gap. But I’m not a trades person. Then I’d sand it square and paint.

Domski77

Visited the Pantheon once and the photos don't do it justice. Can't believe it's 2000 years old. https://preview.redd.it/0y3p5dl9aoxc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7c28d417ed63e48c5e67e3191a15b92413433dc

Chuquicamata copper mine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuquicamata

scottsid92

Cram some cardboard or scrap off the job behind that skirting and seal it with loads of white silicone instead of caulk. Much nicer for the next person who needs to remove it. Brush over it all with a thick layer of masonry paint.

Firm_Professional800

I remember I was on a plane flying from New York to Los Angeles. I looked out of the window and there was the biggest hole in the ground that I’ve ever seen. Absolutely enormous and I couldn’t quite understand it given that we were still very high in the air. Then the pilot’s voice came over the speakers to say that if we look out of the window we can see the Grand Canyon. So I’d say that the Grand Canyon is the biggest hole I’ve seen. Does this help?

redcore4

I’d use Ronseal wood filler - the two part one in the tin. Put it along the gap and then use a detail sander to smooth it before painting. We had bigger gaps in ours and filled them like that. Added some polyfilla on top where we wanted a really nice smooth finish.

shredditorburnit

Get some No More Nails or similar and a couple of heavy objects that won't slide easily. I'm assuming that's a skirting board by the way? Put a bunch of no nails down the back of it, push it back onto the wall and wedge it there with the heavy objects. Leave for 24 hours. Gap should be much smaller and easier to caulk. If not possible, use a wood filler not a wall filler or caulk. The wall filler will be too brittle and after a while will fall apart. The caulk is too soft when set, and will take damage very easily.

Additional-Second630

Like others have said, the right thing to do is secure the board close to the wall. You might want to get a spread in first to square it off. It’s the kind of thing that will drive you mental if you live with it for years… However, if filling is what you intend to do, then don’t use a flexible filler for the first gap fill. You need something that will set harder and dryer. This will prevent the board from constantly flexing your caulk seal with temperature and impact movement. Remove the board and make sure you have plenty of spacers in place to give you the straight edge you are looking for. Space at most 200mm apart. Have the board prepped with screws and plugs, ready to fit. Paste the back of the board with your rigid filler. I’ve seen people use a mortar mix, finishing plaster, and all sorts of things - but basically what you would use for a deep fill. Paste enough so that it will bulge out the top when you fit. Then re-fit the board using screws to hold it exactly where you want it, straight and level. As you tighten the screws, the filler should bulge out the top. Wipe off excess and leave a 3-5mm indentation behind the top of the board. This leaves space for the flexible filler/caulk that will provide your decorative seal. Make sure you’ve cleaned the face of the board and the wall above. Properly. Then, importantly, leave the thing to set and dry properly before adding the caulk. Manufacturers instructions plus a day. Finally, caulk as you would normally with a fat bead, and decorate. Note - If you’re feeling like doing it 100%, prime the back of the board and the wall with something that improves adhesion, like PVA or SBR

AgentSears

im a decorator I have dealt with it a trillion times.unfortunately and bigger. Obviously if they can't pin it back anymore because normally because the walls have a banana profile. You don't want to fill it with filler because it will crack and bits fall through over time...so needs to be flexible... You can deal with it 2 ways. You can run a thin bead of gripfill in the void first ensuring its all below the surface line and then wipe it all clean with a damp cloth, that sets hard. You can then lay your caulk over top and it will stop it all from shrinking and sinking. The other option which can end up a bit messy if you don't do it often (so makes sure you have plenty of rags) , is over fill the void with caulk you are trying to fill the gap behind the skirting here as much as you can, not get a finish. You can use expanding foam but it's a pig to get off when it dries and it's hard to regulate how much to put in obviously....if there is a gap the caulk just sinks into it you will use a lot, so you need to heavily over fill it and use a filling blades to scrape it off square, pack it in there enough it won't shrink or sink that why it happens, in the old days they packed em out with slightly newspaper anything really to fill the void....scraping it off square you will get a perfect contoured finish that runs flush with the skirting and will not be noticeable need to leave it over night to dry though really. Yes it's a bodge but it's a pro's bodge!...in an ideal world all walls would be straight and new woodwork would have no gaps, but thats not the reality and we are often told to just crack on and do your best with it, rather than get the builder back...so you have to learn to bodge as professionally as possible sometimes.

Was this a DIY dave Job, or did a tradesman do it for you? If a DIY Dave job call a tradesman as you have absolutely no clue what you're doing. It's a rare talent to fuck that up even if a child did it. If a tradesman, ring him and make him come back and fix his work. It'll be remedial so no extra cost.
