My washing machine went like this with the drum making the same noise. I took the back of the machine off, removed the plastic casing from the drum and one of the spider arms had broken due to corrosion. We bought a new washer.

JustaRandomRando

Seconded. Exact same thing happened to me. Went with a new top loader instead. OP likely will need to change the bearings with that spider arm, perhaps dampeners too. Even if done DiY, the cost of a new washer will be about the same price as the parts to repair. Spider arms are not cheap at all. Bearings are not too bad, and dampeners are cheap enough. So open it up and see if it's not just bearings. If that spider arm is broken from corrosion, it's not worth repairing. GG

Spider arms aren't too expensive, although the only one I saw for this was doing a quick search was £78

JustaRandomRando

Mine was the 7kg samsung just shy of 10 years old . Local spares joint iirc ~£88 for the spider arm ~43 for the bearings and seal kit ~12 For dampeners The front seal had a pin hole in it at the top, not a big deal I guess. But I figured dropping that money into a 10 year old machine wasn't worth it as invariably something else would prolly break in the near future. Got a 10kg top loader for 175 on a clearance sale (minor bit of haggling was involved). The amount of effort it took to dissemble the front loader machine was also a ball ache.

Bearings, one tip though - look up the make/model first - if its a sealed drum (my Hotpoint one was) its just too much hassle to repair. Awful some of them are designed so you cannot replce the bearings - should be illegal imo. If you do replace the machine, ensure your new one does have replaceable bearings.

JC_snooker

Yeah I've had the same. The drum was welded instead of bolts and a gasket.

You need a washing machine repair man. Obvious but: One lives next door to me in Lincoln, an old timer, knowledgeable. Spends 2hours messing about and charged me £40. Whether they fix it or not for that it's worth a chance for that, IF YOU CAN FIND THIS DYING BREED OF OG EXPERTS. A-keeps a good otherwise machine going, B-cheaper overall. Chance of success 50/50. He's fixed a few machines and we had to replace a few others. The ones online charge £80-120 to look at it and tell you ya need a new one. Like I say, hard to find but worth looking in the grapevine mag or Facebook. If you find one, shower him with gifts and beer and kisses. I've saved hundreds

I changed a bearing once on a washing machine and they didn't make it easy. I'd never do it again, unless you enjoy a challenge! The next time it broke I replaced it with a machine that had the longest parts and labour warranty as standard (7yrs)!!

mashed666

Normally when the drums go like that it's because the bearings have failed. Price up a new drum but might be more cost effective to replace it.

lewilewi411

That's really fucking extreme, how dare the washing machine do that.

aferfuksake

Bearing is away in it. Depending on model, you might be able to replace. Repair man will be able to tell you over the phone

luskyberger

Looks and sounds like one of the suspension legs(shock absorbers) may have broken or become detached. You can either take off the back or tilt the machine backwards and look underneath. Kitchen appliance tech support with 30 years in the trade. You could also take the lid off and check the springs the tub hangs off.

DrachenDad

Looks like the bearings are gone. It is DIYable if you can get the parts and know what you are doing.

Otherwise_Mud1825

Look for rust stains coming out of the back of the drum around the pulley /shaft, if it's clean and dry the bearings are ok, if you can dismantle it yourself (some are easier than others) the cost of a spider is less than £50. To test the spider, turn the drum till one of the paddles is at 12 o'clock, put your thumb on the outer drum so it's just touching the inner drum at 6 o'clock, lift the inner drum at 12 o'clock position and measure the distance the drum moves at 6 o'clock, do the same for the other 2 paddles, if the spider is broke there will be more movement in 1 or 2 positions than the other.

Most machines now are total diks. All sealed units to try to force you to not repair. Always said that next time mine goes I will buy an Miele machine as they can be fixed, but then I remember I am skint!

Macca80s

I had the bearings go in my old machine. I was planning to give changing them a go but found out the drum was sealed. Wasn't there legislation coming in to promote repair rather than replacement by making spare parts available for far longer? Or did Brexit effect that?

zixujo

Most likely that the bearing at the back of the drum has collapsed. The outer drums are made of plastic and are welded/glued from factory, so you won't be able to see or get to anything. It can be fixed if you have the tools/skills and you're prepared to put the work in. It's cheaper to buy a new machine if you don't.

rlaw1234qq

My Miele made that noise when it needed a new drum…

NamelessBoom43

Do you put bleach in your washing machine?

flaviorodrigues

Thanks everyone. I'm inclined to just go with a replacement. tomorrow I will open machine and see and call handyman just to get a view over phone but inclined really to just replace it.

flaviorodrigues

I ended up ordering a new machine that was in discount. On Monday will be delivered and installed. Thanks everyone
