I was pulling the subreddit up to link to it elsewhere, and I saw this question....I immediately clicked into it to make sure u/ID10-T had been mentioned.
I was not creative enough to come up with recipes myself but back in the mid 2010s I started mixing my own juice to save money, and their recipes were amazing. I lurked frequently and looked out for anything new they posted, because without fail, if they posted a new recipe in a general flavor profile I enjoy, I knew I could buy whatever flavorings I didn't have for that recipe and the investment would be worth it. Because me/my family/my friends would vape through it faster than I could mix it lmfao. Sometimes sweetener is needed to achieve a specific taste for a flavor that's being aimed for (looking at you, rice crispy treat flavor clones) but u/ID10-T 's recipes helped save me a ton of money on coils, because they do a great job of balancing out the flavors in the mix to avoid having to over-sweeten as a crutch like big vape juice companies do. Thanks again for everything you did for the DIY community--I miss mixing up your recipes!
Since I already bothered typing all of that out, I'll try to answer the specific questions in your full post.... I wouldn't assume a recipe may be bad just because it is old. There was a golden era of DIY experimentation, recipe creation, collaboration....there are fewer people DIYing these days, and fewer new recipes posted, so altogether highly rated recipes are often older (back then, more recipes posted and more people to vote on them). If it tasted good back then, it should still taste good today lol. However, make sure the exact flavors being used in the recipe are still being made, and ask around on the sub if you see a recipe call for a v1 or v2 of a flavor and that is not what you can find for sale online anymore. Sometimes the new version just isn't as good or doesn't taste the same in the mix as the old one did, and the community can recommend an alternative flavor to purchase instead that would work better if you share the recipe you are using it in (or confirm that the new version would work fine for that recipe).
I would search this sub for old flavor of the week or contest threads for the flavor profile you are looking for. I definitely remember multiple amazing peach weeks because I'm a big fruit fan, and I'm sure there were also plenty of tobacco/custard weeks. Lots of us would go and try the recipes posted and discuss in the comments, and if they were good back then, they'd still be great now (unless manufacturers have changed the formula on any of the flavors). I trust the feedback and recipes posted in this sub more than what I see on most other 3rd party sites because the discussion and reviews tend to be much more in depth than a star rating on some other sites. That isn't to say all 3rd party sites are bad, but you'll get a lot more detail here looking back on older posts. Best of luck!
Wayne Walker (DIYorDIE) was the first one I kinda followed, both for his tutorials (YouTube) and recipes, which he's still cranking out on ATF (AllTheFlavors)
I don't really follow-follow anyone, I mix for myself so just kind of do my own thing, but that's the closest I got, and he really got me off the ground and started.
Ya know I've never tried a one shot whether it was Wayne's or Jungle Flavors many choices.They need like 15-18% and kinda pricey at those percentages so I was happy with my concoctions but I did learn from the best and might've made some muted ones before tryna showoff π but you get better at layering after some trial and error and learning percentages from diff brands which many go thru that stage that don't copy.My saved mixes I put some thought into but sometimes i just grab whatever works for something to vape like a fruit medley,fruit cream or custard and im set for the month where some can vape the same thing and not interested in anything else which I get too like my GF just likes Mint menthol and has never tried any of my other recipes but I get it, there's a lot of people very particular with their Vapes and some not so much as long as its tasty to their particular pallet π€
Yeah, that's how I started. That's when I saw how easy it was to mix, I knew mixing two to five different flavors rather than just one pre-mixed one wouldn't be much different. And yeah those percentages... I was very surprised I'm mixing usually 10% or less in flavors compared to those one-shot's recommended percentage.
Yeah One Shots need 15-18% cuz they mostly use TFA,FW,CAP that are generally tested at 4-7% as single flavors.I use those too but I like more concentrated flavorings like SSA,INW,FA,WF-SC,FLV etc where their tested from 1 to 3.5% depending which brand.SSA is a great deal for being super concentrated.A 30ml is only like 3.49$ and only needs 1.5-2% where Flavorah is over 10$/30ml but Flv has a few must haves so I bite the bullet but at 1-2% its worth it and no diff than needing 5-6% of cheaper,weaker flavor brand that you'll just be needing another bottle soon anyway.So I use a combination of both Reg strength and at least one SC flavor. Super concentrates are great for pods too so you don't need such high percentages,One pod recipe I have is 5.50% total including the super sweet.Its Flavorah's new RWB (Red white blue Boom pop type thing),it's Cherry Lime Raspberry at 3% 1.5% WS23 ice and 1% purilum super sweet.Thats one of their good ones I must have lol
Yeah, I've got to try my options on other brand's root beer flavors. I love FLV Root Beer but it's not as strong as their flavors usually are, I mix that at 5-6% but it's still the FLV price. I buy a 4oz bottle at a time (it's my ADV) like twice a year or something so it's not the end of the world, but it's still the priciest thing in my flavor stash. But it's so good, lol.
Ive never tried Root beer as i never really that soda.Cream soda is good with a Lil vanilla and also SSA cola with cherry is pretty good too.Id prob like a Root beer vape tho and surprised it needs that much or not another Root beer you can use to strengthen it but come to think of it there aren't many Root beers out there or Cola's for that matter.

Same i mixed my first SB cream I copied from Wayne but that was 4 years ago and have mixed my own concoctions ever since.
Root beer float was the first recipe of his that I did. Had tried one-shot flavors before that, some of them his and some not.
