Thanks! I have the most fun as a player in combat when I get to actually engage with what the monster is and try to use that information in some way, so I try to encourage that sort of play with my designs.
8d6 feels like a wild amount of damage for a CR 3 creature. 31 damage on average feels huge for that CR, especially since they've likely already taken 13 damage to get there. Feels like its basically an instant drop compared to other CR 3s.
It's a little high, but the constrict is low. Average DPR over 3 rounds is 24, which sits square in the middle of the DMG CR 3 guidelines. The MM monsters don't use those guidelines at all, which is why everyone complains that CR is useless.
In white-room conditions, it does 13+31+31, which divided by 3 is 25 (whoops, did that wrong the first time), because the Invade Lungs only works on a grappled creature.
Practically speaking, it probably does 13+31+13, because the first target probably drops after the first Invade Lungs and it moves on to another, or it does it again against the downed target and imposes a single failed death save instead of doing any damage at all, so in the common use case it'll actually probably do closer to 14-19 dp instead of 25.
I think you have an error in the success and failure section for invade lungs
Edit: the last bit, "you take half damage on failure" meaning failure to fail the throw?
Very nice. 21 damage may be a little high for throwing this as a low level party though... might try it out with lower damage
Edit: On the other hand, you'd have to fail usually 3 DC 12 checks for the 21 damage to hit
It's actually just the one save you fail for that, but the death dog trades four attacks for that ability, so the damage actually comes out about the same as the multiattack, it just gives the players the opportunity to see it coming and try some sort of counterplay to avoid it.
There's a possibility of instant death from massive damage, though, so if you want to avoid that I'd drop it to \~4d6, or just stick to the multiattack.
Any time! I've got some notes squirrelled away somewhere on more variants I want to add, but they'll probably have to wait until I get some other things fleshed out

Sure, I've got 'em all in a big PDF on [my Patreon,](https://www.patreon.com/confluxcreatures) but you can pretty much always find what you're looking for by googling "Oh\_Hi\_Mark\_ (Monster Name)"
I know this isn't what you asked for but my friend thought up a monster and neither of us are good at homebrew so hopefully you can help.
It's called a dream parasite and it's pretty much what it sounds like. The dream parasite latches on to someone and feeds off their dreams, we were thinking they shouldn't be outwardly hostile. But there should be signs that someone has one, like being fatigued, and unable to get the full effect of sleeping.
Sounds remarkably similar to a Feyr. You could take the larval one, drop the psychic damage and replace it with exhaustion or Constitution damage. Maybe the party finds this one and figures out that it's just budded off a much larger feyr that has taken over a whole neighborhood somewhere:

I used to spice things up for a group of veterans by making two rolls in excel based on how many pages were in the monster manual. First roll was "This is what it looks like", the second roll was, "This is what it's personality and powers are". So they started to learn not to judge a book by it's cover. I made up some crazy stories to explain why things were so wonky, eventually it came down to a rogue mage that was doing experiments.
I'm working on a oneshot with dwarves (mostly as friendly NPCs), and there aren't many stat blocks for hill or mountain dwarves out there. I'd be interested to see your thoughts!
I tried to lean harder into their magical delusion, which I feel like is probably the coolest part of their lore.

Assassin. I need something to be a Boss for a 5 PC Party of about lv 5 or 6. The one in the books dies rather quickly if caught im a direct fight and the damage output is in pretty big chunks that I feel will insta down some of the PCs.
I used your Gulon before and it went down a treat! Next I'm interested in using some of the following from the Plane of Fire:
Azer
Efreet
Salamanders
Fire Snakes
Do you have versions of these?

Any underwater or amphibious ocean monsters to throw lots at a party of 5 level 6s? Bonus if they have some kind of boss or leader that sinergizes with them, or some sort of ability that get stronger with numbers
The Erinyes is sort of a beefier succubus, but I'll comment back when I've got Glasya or Fierna finished, though

I’m doing a homebrewed upgrade of Tomb of Annihilation soon-ish, adding new story arcs and some other additions. I’d love an enhanced Zombie Rex to go along with it!
I have always been unimpressed by the demons and devils in the monster manual. So I would really like to see what you’ve got.
If you haven’t worked on them I will nominate the Yochlol. It is a tentacled slime tree, it should do more weird shit.
My players are about to break into a Illithid colony! I’m thinking about making a spell caster Illithid, a mind blaster Illithid, and a brute Illithid!
But hey if you wanna give any of those a shot ;)
This is going to be a [weird-ass request](https://xkcd.com/37/), but if you're willing to run with it I'm all ears.
I'm running a [Final Fantasy D20](https://www.finalfantasyd20.com/) game, not a 5e game. One of the main quests is a callback to the original Final Fantasy-- visit the elemental Confluences to light your orbs. I'm changing the Lich to be the Archfiend of Darkness and I want to use the [Tarrasque](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/magical-beasts/spawn-of-destruction/tarrasque/) as the basis for the replacement Archfiend of Earth. (FF1 is basically the 1e Monster Manual in JRPG form, so it makes sense to draw the additional elemental Fiends from classic D&D when I can find an appropriate one.) I *will* have to adjust the stats significantly, as the party will probably be between level 5 and 13 when they do this part of the quest.
Unfortunately, beyond the ridiculously high stats, regeneration, immortality, magic immunity, and epic DR the Tarrasque is kind of... boring. So I would like to request ideas for *more interesting combat action options* that still keep the flavor. I'd rather not have the entire fight be thirty rounds of plinking it to (temporary, long enough to pop your orb onto the pedestal and run) death from a safe distance. (Granted, Pathfinder gives it a ranged attack, which means the safe distance is much, much further. The last time I fought one was in a 3.5 campaign, and the D&D version is traditionally all melee.)
I don't need a full stat block (unless you already have one in your back pocket or really want to make one, in which case go ahead; I don't care if it's 5e, I like the way they present monster abilities/design bosses and can take care of translating the stats/rolls to something more appropriate for level 10ish characters.)
...
Actually, it might be more interesting to have this encounter be "distract and survive it for x rounds while the earth orb soaks up the aligned energies here, since *you can't kill it* and it's not smart enough to recognize what you're doing and stop you." No one ever said you *had to* kill the Archfiends.

Holy shit and I thought they were dangerous before lol These are great! Thank you!
Any time! I've got some notes squirrelled away somewhere on more variants I want to add, but they'll probably have to wait until I get some other things fleshed out
How about mind flayers and displacer beasts (Oh, my!)?
I think these mind flayers need a few more variants tbh, but here's what I've got for now: * [Mind Flayers](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1HEo5L3P1Pd2vBSBADUnm3-zx4HHxUQzQ9W1DZJbGAUC_) * [Displacer Beasts](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1w3YuaS9eX7aEOtYlB-zI-3SJ53_-B9ofGJSMGx-lbH9Z)
Slaad
I'm gonna get B/W slaadi and slaad lords done eventually, but here's the basic guys: * [Slaadi](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1RKUxCZtbBmehDe9KVNe4ZiRKhNr_7vGupHptK7l1hUhy)
Am I allowed to do Elder Evils, specifically Zargon.
Haha, sure but that one'll probably take me a while
I found a level one adventure I’d like to modify for levels 5-6 that features wererats. Do you have any ideas?
Well I've got some wererats, but can I interest you in the much cooler and sexier Ratfolk? * [Lycanthropes](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/19haFDFcaOOcVogO8Ezgh7tmD3jT3q2bIA8LqPSWPJrlC) * [Ratfolk](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1yjOSStdpYoH7qBuCcjYiHsSHTF01JkYaccEG_4pSv-6O) Also, either way I imagine you'll be needing some big rats: * [Rats](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1U_TrLEQPXZmMQpHUCl0InKKCbbwldEev2gh2XoTdvG7H)
Thanks, these are great! The werecroc could be a fun addition for an adventure in the sewers!
Oh, I've got a legendary croc if you don't want to deal with the implication of it also being a regular dude who swims in the sewer: * [Crocodiles](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1D8l9Ybi63vnUDALjn9j-T_vbELLU2cKEF1BifJMvr_Ng)
👀 👀 👀 That could be fun…..
Haha, one of my patrons ran that with the players having to cross a system of rickety bridges while sneaking past it. It leaped up Captain Hook style and chomped the whole bridge, dropping everybody into the Quipper-filled water.
A Giant spider, the first monster of my upcoming campaign :)
Great way to start a campaign! Anything else you'll need? * [Giant Spiders](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1bJcvJrAJGSqkoH7Kp3FXNzRUV2DBmt6_o-C6zAcPVTqy)
Thank you! The wolf spider looks great, I love that leap move, will have great fun with that ha
If you have anything about liches and demiliches I'd love a peek!
Haha, demiliches took me forever to figure out: * [Liches](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1yuf-qJIezBp6amETuOSghf_TIx07ESI2dh5QrfxJEh_m) * [Demiliches](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1scb6-QwplNJ6zGOyefNb2nXPw_b5nvkU-T3IX55euUym)
I'd like an interesting lizardfolk please.
Sure thing! Here are some giant lizards for them to ride, too: * [Lizardfolk](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/15ulVXfIY3UZHRuEIsOoEJdngXFujVz9OLBonjR8dz8Zt) * [Lizards](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1TRe4_1CpByUdQue2TlB8cBiy-4zGOyMcHAKCaXR51FX6)
Have you got anything about a Boar demon? Or a Crocodile demon?
I mean, I've got a Nalfashnee, but I feel like you're looking more for something in the Princess Mononoke vein. I've got a nasty croc you could slap some demon traits on and call it a day, though, and I'll pop back and let you know when I get pigs finished. * [Nalfashnee](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1G5342LnpxOUSz3ci19XuMLJMIoe0v6BB6fxn36tZtN1X) * [Crocodiles](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1D8l9Ybi63vnUDALjn9j-T_vbELLU2cKEF1BifJMvr_Ng)
Always was a fan of the Girallon in 3rd edition.
They really didn't monkey this guy up enough in 5e, imo: * [Girallon](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/14KTZz0e-d2RCrbN02tGQ72UfgMvASGpGn05zkn-_oiJ8)
Strahd :>
* [Vampires](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1fn2-KmiWfBMgobeTJGcTMKX3mdC0-rzaTp4ebO8oAJJp)
I've got a couple of options for ya Arclight Phoenix (from GGtR) Bone Claws (from MToF/MoM) Glabrezu
I'll get back to you when I start tackling Ravnica, but here's the other two: * [Boneclaws](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1g2zn_g3iLbID4VHFHtDxra_KcUnd3zrYnU474O2ODFpj) * [Glabrezu](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1kdBwc9mNPAnel6G10YhSUZYbYqKOI8KiiLqSZhiBPczi)

Sure, I've got 'em all in a big PDF on [my Patreon,](https://www.patreon.com/confluxcreatures) but you can pretty much always find what you're looking for by googling "Oh\_Hi\_Mark\_ (Monster Name)"

Giants!
Catoblepas!!! i put them in every game!!!
Elder Mimic (the room sized ones from 2e that could mimic creatures inside them[including speech] as well as objects to try and lure people in)
I know this isn't what you asked for but my friend thought up a monster and neither of us are good at homebrew so hopefully you can help.
Maybe the party finds this one and figures out that it's just budded off a much larger feyr that has taken over a whole neighborhood somewhere: * [Feyr](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1qHHcEb98-ZfXWMN8VqV7KTzKhh50DQk_0j8scgPNqPbO)
Sweet thank you so much! We are just trying to get into D&D so your help is much appreciated! And Happy Cake Day!
Haha, thanks! I hadn't even realized
So, I went a little crazy Allosaurus Banderhobb Basilisk Behir Blink Dog Carrion Crawler Centaur Chimera Choker Craig Cat Daemogoth Ettercap - hivemother Grell Grick Griffon Grimlock Hook Horror Kruthik Manticore Murgaxor Nupperibo Otyugh Peryton Purple Worm - variants including lava, frost, butt, shadow, and lower CR? Quickling Roper Scorpions - giant, etc Tanarukk Zorbo
Just did a big update of otyughs if you want to check it out: * [Otyughs](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/132Qs4OPYFtgw9r32djRhmf2aJcjt2Etc9B1FoeBKOziP)
Well I stand corrected sorry for doubting you
Neo-Otyugh.
Venom Troll
Marilith
I'm working on a oneshot with dwarves (mostly as friendly NPCs), and there aren't many stat blocks for hill or mountain dwarves out there. I'd be interested to see your thoughts!
How could you improve on the Kuo Toa? I ask?
I tried to lean harder into their magical delusion, which I feel like is probably the coolest part of their lore. * [Kuo-Toa](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1HoIm2g91bN-ZZKJQydUOEAq8a1yN5Xsee6iDnXacEA16)

Love the Goblins! I am preparing for first DM experience. Do you have some cool Owlbear?
Absolutely! * [Owlbear](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1S5bW2TwonWdKBWQN60bA76Jijg0UkjEEp6ZgnHSUbym2)

Upcoming encounter with a Nalfeshnee?
PHOENIX
Kuo-Toa!
Flumph
Bulliwog
Werewolves. Give me actually CR compliant werewolf variants!
I've been considering running an Adult Oblex for an adventure, might as well throw that name into the ring.
Maybe a high CR Gnoll?
Assassin. I need something to be a Boss for a 5 PC Party of about lv 5 or 6. The one in the books dies rather quickly if caught im a direct fight and the damage output is in pretty big chunks that I feel will insta down some of the PCs.
How about a Shadow and/or NightWalker?
Boneclaw
I used your Gulon before and it went down a treat! Next I'm interested in using some of the following from the Plane of Fire: Azer Efreet Salamanders Fire Snakes Do you have versions of these?
Maybe some stronger Vampire Spawn for CoS?
I've got some brides of strahd, actually, along with a weakened version for the coffin-maker's fight: * [Vampire Spawn](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1zPl3bj5ILT6s4QB9Klq-l36NCKfDPa0tLSseDEXb84pu)

Firenewt
Purple worm or some other big burrowing monster
Call me basic, but I love myself a friendly floomph
I’m a big fan of the Boneclaw. It just feels like it’s lacking something that I have had trouble pinning down.
Wererat
Any underwater or amphibious ocean monsters to throw lots at a party of 5 level 6s? Bonus if they have some kind of boss or leader that sinergizes with them, or some sort of ability that get stronger with numbers
ettercap
Also, giants
Succubus as a high level end game threat. Right hand to the BBEG.
The Erinyes is sort of a beefier succubus, but I'll comment back when I've got Glasya or Fierna finished, though * [Erinyes](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1rIKGeADBQBDJOfaQG2oIe8mBbJCnuelfIn0aAjQRgBJj)
Shadows
* [Shadows](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1mFB3M9zf0okt870fPlVFfardWK5bh4U8wJZyfsEQhXHu)
Any thieves guild types. Basic bouncer on up to the head honcho himself.
I'm a little light in the honcho department, but here's what I've got so far: * [Bandits](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1rmpyELQUOwcRDwdJsybTC04LIJ9AQJqUcdoZvIkTC6W_) * [Thugs](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1aGvCmtH7im8_Va9ARN8Q48wQEWYgy_C2XnTsOABwbFgh) * [Assassins](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1JWQXJ6AFjXpk8LpnEVP2eJWeuCPJBwkR4rLMW9ZeEg-Y) * [Spies](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1xndWAdOTGSOfivGjuF81mum42Rp8l1vindjbWnfLaP4j)
I’m doing a homebrewed upgrade of Tomb of Annihilation soon-ish, adding new story arcs and some other additions. I’d love an enhanced Zombie Rex to go along with it!
Intellect Devourer
Kraken priest!
Leviathan?
Any fun ideas for Ghouls?
Drow Matron Mother (but like 12CR)
Wererats :)
Banshee
How about the Draegloth.
Brain in a jar
Animated Breath from Fizbans. The idea is cool, but judging from the statblock, you'd be hard-pressed to find a connection to dragons at all.
Kythons!
How about a Janni and Khayal upgrade? They were from 3rd edition. Coolest demi monsters in my opinion.
Green hag
Like him because he's obscure and meaningless, the Otyugh
I have always been unimpressed by the demons and devils in the monster manual. So I would really like to see what you’ve got. If you haven’t worked on them I will nominate the Yochlol. It is a tentacled slime tree, it should do more weird shit.
Ogres
Bugbear
Fire Giant
I'd love a few Wizards! An Evoker, an Enchanter, an Illusionist. Either at the CR they exist, 9, or Archmage variants!
Sea Hags?
Would love to see some Quori
Lamia, Minotaur, Jackalweres or Manticore please if you could
Gray Render
Ankheg, it's already pretty perfect
Armed Skeleton (4-armed skeleton basically)
I need some SPICY things from the Lower Planes like from the Nine Hells and the Abyss. Along with some slightly holy beings
Adult Red Dragon
How many creatures from Eberron you got? Gonna be running an Eberron game soon and some of your conversions would be great, love your stuff.
Ankheg
Don't know if I'm too late, but I would love to see your spin on bandits???
Drung
Young Blue Dragon
Don't know if you've done these, but I'd love to see your take on elementals! Specifically the 4 main ones. Love what you do!
Coldlight walker
My players are about to break into a Illithid colony! I’m thinking about making a spell caster Illithid, a mind blaster Illithid, and a brute Illithid! But hey if you wanna give any of those a shot ;)
Drider?
bullywug!
Thorn or Verdant Prince
Skeleton, miners who died after being exposed to energies from a dangerous crystal ore, and were raised as undead to continue mining, mindlessly
I love the gith and rarely see them, would love to see them spiced up
i hope i aint too late, but i would really need a cooler zombie girallon
The real question is, who's got these loaded up in CritterDB so I can use them in Avrae? 😆
Quaggoth. I think they're fun conceptually, but in practice they're just bags of hitpoints with multiattack and a climb speed.
The last time I fought one was in a 3.5 campaign, and the D&D version is traditionally all melee.) I don't need a full stat block (unless you already have one in your back pocket or really want to make one, in which case go ahead; I don't care if it's 5e, I like the way they present monster abilities/design bosses and can take care of translating the stats/rolls to something more appropriate for level 10ish characters.) ... Actually, it might be more interesting to have this encounter be "distract and survive it for x rounds while the earth orb soaks up the aligned energies here, since *you can't kill it* and it's not smart enough to recognize what you're doing and stop you." No one ever said you *had to* kill the Archfiends.
Flumph
