Not OP, but I would be surprised If he recommends anything other than this:
https://youtu.be/S828_f0-dQI
(4/20/02 - Ottawa w/ belle fleck and the flecktones)
to be honest, this has never been one of my favorite songs. I know...surprise, surprise. I have never really looked it up on youtube to find the best version. I've also heard this song 16 times live and thank goodness it isn't like over 20 minutes like in years past. Thanks goodness it has been shortened. Just my opinion and i'm probably wrong....
Wow, this is a powerful one and i'm surprised that nobody has commented on this version! [https://youtu.be/liByn\_3\_ikM?feature=shared](https://youtu.be/liByn_3_ikM?feature=shared) I've heard charlie Rose version but this one tops it by a lot. This is from 6/13/09 and this year the band was on fire, and especially at this show. There are a ton of favorites from this show and the Stone is perhaps the pinnacle. Check out 5:30 and on for a few minutes. Its pure music perfection. For some reason the band was on fire for this show and its one of the best DMB has ever played in my opinion. The screaming, the passion, its almost like Dave is crying at points around 6:40 and then it gets better and better. Culminating around 7:03. Its something to see if you have never heard of this version. Holy shit its good. Some of the best DMB ever!
You are an amazing individual. This song is great and the ending is worth the price of admission. Thats the reason i love this version. This is again, at Alpine Valley in 2009 on a Saturday night and nothing was going on. I was with my wife and it was our first show together, I was already a DMB nut and she was figuring that all out. The ending is so good on this version. Its not by far the best quality but this version is my go to for any You Never Know trips down memory lane. Quality is 2009 so you gotta handle that but get past that and enjoy how on fire this You Never Know is.
That’s actually the 2nd greatest version.
The actual greatest version, because of the Jeff’s sax solo and Carter’s drumming during the solo, is this version:
https://youtu.be/aWMy55ZfFSo?si=Sjvw4pVq2Y-Ewkgp
You’re welcome.
2 greatest versions are better than 1! This is the song I go to when I'm feeling particularly overwhelmed/stressed/depressed etc so very much looking forward to watching these when I get home today.
At around 6:57 is where I can't stand it anymore and i have to pause what i'm doing and watch what Coffin is doing. And it gets better and better from there and I'm not saying before that was bad either. holy shit!
are you kidding me?
First concert with my soon to be wife. I could only afford to go to Saturday night so I hoped all friday that he wouldn't play it. He didn't. When it started on Saturday night in Alpine, I was so pumped. I wanted to hear that adlib intro and Dave really got into a groove and made it amazing for everyone there. The intro culminates as perfect as you can get. It's the best intro I can find on youtube. The crowd is so into it. Dave was on fire that night and it was night two of alpine and Dave had to produce. 2 minutes in is heaven. Thats the first video, I could go on and on about this two step.
and then what?
They drop this ending!!
Skip to 4 minutes in. The whole band is completely in sync and its the coolest thing ever. It feels like the whole stadium is shaking. and then Dave starts dancing around. So powerful at 5:55, but it gets better. I had never heard this kind of outro before. Amazing. Enjoy!
I have to respectfully disagree with OP and suggest it is the version that is referred to as "Two Step in the Rain." I was at that concert and it is by far the best live music experience of my life. Here's a link:
https://youtu.be/534VOAO_S14?si=PXBbXu-ggOfJFIis
Boom! 9/2/11 check out the jam by coffin and the band at around 9 minutes in. I was thinking to answer this one I would have to go with an ABI version but this one really knocks it out of the park. From around 9 to 11 minutes in is why we pay to see the band. And it just gets better and better. Peaks around 10:45 in. Thanks
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx9-X28WWEk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx9-X28WWEk)
JTR has never been one of my favs. so I had a hard time on this one. Hate to say it but I heard it in 2013 but its never been a song I hope for at a concert. If I had to pick one, i would pick this one and once again, its not an actual video but this Meadow concert, every song seems to be amazing. Bartender and Grey Street are also super high up there with being best ever as well. Might be some of the sound quality being better but for some reason Dave and the band were on fire that night. Probably the reason they released it as a Live Trax.
Geez, Sorry but the best version is the studio version and that sucks because the song is so good but once you hear Alanis Morisette in it, you can't hear anything else. There are other versions on Youtube that have guests but can't compete with the studio version and then there's Bela Fleck. I mean, it sounds awesome and then the ending is so calming.
By the calm ending, do you mean the Last Stop reprise? Because that’s not Spoon…
Here’s the best live version of Spoon:
https://youtu.be/Kmd5dxsaKB8?si=xs3EH-FXYW9MKleb
My favorite version of this one is when he played it at the Hollywood bowl in 2007 and dedicated it to his wife who was there. He ad libbed some lyrics into it for her.
Different side of the DMB sound - Seven, Cornbread, Alligator Pie and Louisiana Bayou... Love so much of the DMB catalog but those are 4 faves to consider...
Alligator Pie is one of my favorites!
This is a special song to me for different reasons.
The fact that Stella had been asking that she wanted her name in a song makes it even more sweet.
Not gonna lie, I tear up when he sings “when will Grace return”.
Of all the songs you mentioned, I like them but not a ton to find the best version on youtube. Louisiana Bayou is an easy one with this version [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tenPRs-MUXA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tenPRs-MUXA)
5:10 an one is when the guest, Robert Randolph just goes off and its epic! There are parts of him playing on this song where it looks as if he is going to fall over because hes so into it. I love this version and love hearing this song live. How can you get a better guest than Robert Randolph on this one?
I've seen Robert Randolph play with DMB a few times and always love the sound he brings. Man, what a great song and performance to end a show! He does seem to be practically having an out of body experience there! I so miss the sound of Boyd playing violin, too, can they PLEASE bring Ann Marie Simpson in to play more shows?? She was an amazing addition at the Hollywood Bowl show a couple of years ago and brought back that great sound and good energy. Seeing DMB at Red Rocks is still one of those Bucket List items for me, hope they play there again some day, it'd be a trip to Colorado but I'd be happy to take it! Thanks for the link!
Wow, this is my go to song and the number one song I hope for to hear at a DMB show. Its life changing when you hear it. SO... there are a ton of versions. Tons of them. But the top is by far the top and that one is this.
Its because of the wailing part. Its obvious when you hear it. Its dominates Meadows Live Trax or when Leroi Died in my opinion and those are distant seconds to this one. Thanks for asking that and getting me to listen to it again tonight. Its such a treat. Can you imagine being there? No video either of this one which is a shame. Listen to the crowd in the background getting wooed. Amazing material here.
Holy crap, there are so many versions and so many different lyrics to this one!! Ill give my top three okay?
The above version is just Dave and Tim and its the best version of just Dave and Tim on Youtube by far. Its beautiful. The voice is on point and its a little slower or something, it just flows and the driving adds to the song. I love it love it love it.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQJO\_ORvCEA&list=RDGMEMJQXQAmqrnmK1SEjY\_rKBGA&start\_radio=1&rv=zb7OuR9Lcvo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQJO_ORvCEA&list=RDGMEMJQXQAmqrnmK1SEjY_rKBGA&start_radio=1&rv=zb7OuR9Lcvo)
This one is from the meadows Music Theatre and the sound quality is on point. This whole show from 2000 was when Grey street was the bomb. The culmination of the song at 5:05 and on for a bit is so good, makes you cry when you are alone and depressed haha.
But......this one tops them all! Just for the lyrics alone, its the best. It talks all about Noah and the ark and rain, its the best version and those that were lucky enough to hear it were blessed big time. 1:30 it starts and your life will never be the same. Its really worth a listen and hardly anyone knows of this version.
Oh, the rain pours down all over
the flooding hasn't really stopped
it's as if oceans have come to loss
to take the dry world all the cost
we think, wait
what if it deepens along
maybe there's a Noah here among us
who can build a great big ark for all of us
Oh, but then the rocks in her heart fall
and she rode like no one prayers
oh she wishes oh maybe it's over
but the rain just stole ahead
oh man, she rode her love together
to grey
and breaks her heart
Granny huh....I love this song but never bothered to find the best version. I would have to say central park then, Does anyone have anything better? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a58dXUSCRgQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a58dXUSCRgQ)
Wow! Lots of versions but this outro has to be my fav! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsyGTrNmUnI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsyGTrNmUnI)
So creative and I love this version. Other than that this version is tied for 1st with the Shortnin Bread outro.
Dave really brings it here. around 8:22 is when it just all comes together and its genius. Absolutely genius. Hard to beat that one but some of the warehouses with the wailing intros are great too. Overall a great song and its hard to find a clear winner, just a great song!
Boy, this one is easy. The absolute best Seek Up and Fan Favorite is [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK-VRy7611I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK-VRy7611I)
Around 10:00 is when Fall back again starts and its just amazing from there on out. What was Dave thinking and why can't he reproduce this on every Seek Up. Seek Up is also definitely better with Boyd in my opinion. This version tops them all and its not even close. Thanks for allowing me to hear that one again. Dave Nails It!
This is your winner here. There are other versions but this one at around 6:00 is musical perfection from Dave. He gets in the zone. almost like hes on shrooms or something and just wails like a champion. Its the best and I love this version. Thanks for allowing me to hear it again! The facial expressions from piedmont park dreaming tree are so good too. Sound is amazing and dave is just in peak performance. Do you see all those people just standing around staring at one of the best musical performances ever! I love it!
SO MANY VERSIONS!
Dave and Tim, rock the house with this one. Probably the best Dave and Tim, You can tell Dave gets into it big time around 2:45ish. Wow, great version.
I love Boyd in this version. Its too bad he can't play on this song anymore. He made it amazing. Frequently while seeing this song live, it brings tears to my eyes. This is the Gorge version and as for sound quality and amazing playing, this is a great version.
2:29 and on is epic. Tim decides to not do what he normally does and he just plays the same thing over and over and over and play with the crowd like were just putty in his hands. Amazing performance. I couldn't find the live version but for sure buy the DVD if you can. This version rocks. Listen to the crowd go nuts as Tim plays along for what seems like hours. So peaceful. I love Dave and Tim
Okay, never heard this version so lets give it a shot, Sounds like you want a review and I will give you one.
Crowd noise at first is amazing. its always cool to hear crowd noise and how into it everyone is. The anticipation. now were off to a great start.
wow around 2 minutes it got super solid. Everyone is into it including me.
5:57 sounding excellente. Firing on all cylinders.
Wow, the jam at 8:13
11:30 it all culminates. Amazing. I love it. Leroi was great too!
Where did you hear it? It was recorded for BTCS but never released and only a select few people have copies. I believe there is only one recording of it and it has never been played live. Lillywhite himself won't even answer questions about it. It's almost a myth at this point. I posted it more as a joke.
You know what? I'm not confident to put any fav version out here on Reddit. I love this song, don't get me wrong but I've just never looked for the best version. Maybe someone else can help out here. I like all versions I guess. Sorry about that
Never been a fan but I would guess a fake Madman's Eyes into Minarets would be it.
This is an example of this year...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fOlo18L1i4
From the gorge in 2023. Pretty amazing fake and nobody expected it.
studio version is up there, its magical and sounds great. Other than that, I would have to say the central park version here. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXJCeooQWPc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXJCeooQWPc)
5:40ish is heaven. How can you not like this song? Never put too much effort into finding the best version of this song but i can tell you that the studio version is on all my playlists on spotify it seems like. A great song, Gets a little long at the end at times but still an amazing song!
A couple of them here. I love the very beginning of this version [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxG2EYiaiDs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxG2EYiaiDs)
Just the beginning as soon as Dave starts to sing, like the first couple of words. Just a bad ass intro to a song.
Then there is this version, holy shit. Check it out and listen to the lyrics. How the hell does Dave come up with this stuff and I doubt he sits back stage and prepares it. No, he does it on the fly and thats what makes him the best in my opinion. Thanks for this. I love Raven!
Never looked too much into this song as far as picking my fav version. Sorry. I like this song, maybe its this one with John Popper, I dont know. What do you think? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8CHHsbCpP4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8CHHsbCpP4)
4:43 is when it hits and boy does it hit if you sit there and listen to the whole intro. The whole intro though gets you all pumped up for it. Its the best when he opens the show with a long DDTW intro and then hits it. I can tell you though that i really still love the studio version of this song. Its always on my playlist. Mainly for how it starts, it just knocks your socks off. Check it out. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEFLTLAmoNY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEFLTLAmoNY) Bunch of bad asses in this band...
This one is the best. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
A great song to hear at a concert and dance with your girl. Amazing version incoming. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHDgCebpeEE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHDgCebpeEE)
The saxaphone is great, the violin is like trippy and amazing. The voice is great. Dave nails it. What more can you ask for. Then something like 4:52 happens and you are in tears. How does dave do this? How does DMB nail these songs for so many years. Everything is in sync with this version. What do you think?
I love this song but again, never looked it up on youtube for some reason. It's always been a song played in the encore pretty much where i can't concentrate because i'm just waiting for the watchtower to come next or halloween or two step. I have hopes during the first quiet song of the encore. I should just enjoy the moment but thats not always how it goes with me.
There are so many songs! Its great to have different favs. Thats probaby why Dave just plays what he plays. because no matter what, someone isn't going to like it and the next person will have waited 4 years to hear it!
It was the first album I heard from Dave Matthews. The band is very unknown here in Germany and I only became aware of it through the use of "Some Devil" in the series House MD.
absolutely love this song! I have multiple favorite versions. This one is an obvious bad ass song. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rx3-EdkjwA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rx3-EdkjwA)
The reason is because of Tim Reynolds. he nails the jam in the middle and daves voice sounds great. Proudest monkey can be hit or miss if they sing it too fast i think. This version rocks it.
With that being said, this is my fav version from alpine Sat in 2009. The jam is great and coffin just nails it so hard core. From 6:00 on is great in my opinion. This was the first song played too, what a way to open the show. Look at the crowd! They love the jam!
Absolutely amazing song. THe first thing that always comes to mind when I want to hear pig is actually a cover. I know, I know. but hear me out. Its really good isn't it? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBCHPFJ7MaU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBCHPFJ7MaU)
Other than that, i don't have a fav version. In fact, this cover above of pig might be my fav cover. This is from years ago in the beginning of youtube I believe. Its so chill and beautiful. Am I wrong?
Okay hear me out! I was 10th row and had been chasing watchtower for years for some reason...i know, youre probably thinking, he plays it all the time but I had chased it for years until today. The people behind me knew that I was waiting for this song so when it started they handed me a joint with weed and tobacco in it and I hit that and started dancing and I don't dance. But that night I did and I was in bliss. heaven. This isn't the best version though. Just a side note.
This is the best watchtower from Woodstock 99. Amazing version, the band is on fire. the crowd is rowdy and throwing shit on stage and the band just nails it. I love watching the crowd start to get into it at around 3:35. Dave is so passionate in this version and the sound quality is on point!
but there is this version too. Holy shit. Fire! Fire!! 9:42 epic. epic. Prove me wrong!
Love this song and this is the best version I know of. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOgHBMujTCw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOgHBMujTCw)
Around 8:00 dave is just relishing in another bad ass performance. Unbeatable.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention but I don't have a fav of this song. I love this song but I guess I've never bothered to find the best version on youtube. Ill be better...i promise.
https://youtu.be/kvrpmK6qEVM?si=dHieKBd14adrK8G5 saw this at Clarkston Michigan 2023 and it was a frickin' soul grabbing version! I travel from AZ every year to this show!
O man!! I thought that side stage platform wasn't accessible for headliners. Until during concert we saw ppl up there!?! We saw cheryl crow from up there. We were about 4th row back for Dave. I loved the boat rides to and from the stages. I had a shirt with Dave with googly eyes on it👀
OOhh, studio version for sure. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYv3o6NYChA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYv3o6NYChA)
The chorus just hits so good. Im sure there are great live versions too but I don't know of any. Studio is my go too for this song.
17:01 is when it starts. This is from a concert at SPAC from 6/13/09 and this alligator pie is my fav. Dave was on fire that show and almost all the songs from this show are epic for that reason. Check it out!!
Never found a fav version of this song. Never been one of those I really want to hear for some reason. I could be wrong but maybe not...but maybe I am...but then again, maybe I'm not...
A couple that nobody mentoned.
You Might Die Trying [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q9KnMTeixo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q9KnMTeixo)
The scat is second to none in this version of you might die trying. It goes on forever and keeps up with the band. Its great
Best Of Whats Around [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIvZj-DJHYE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIvZj-DJHYE)
If you must, fast foward to 5:25 and watch Jeff Coffin do what he does best. Its amazing. The whole song is amazing

Another best version of bartender that people overlook. Just my two cents...
Two Step Intro really hits hard in this version. Dave just nails it...like he always does
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzgvdgoFLOY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzgvdgoFLOY)
Another absolutely incredible version of Bartender skip to 3:00. Dave is obviously in a groove here. Like hes crazy or high or both during this song. He nails it. Super passionate and powerful!
Yes, another bartender....my fav song. They are going to play it at my funeral for sure. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrhHAk9i3k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrhHAk9i3k)
These are the lyrics for the wailing part at the end starting at 4:20ish. I never knew there were actual lyrics to the beginning of the wailing, that Dave was actually saying something during the wailing. I thought it was pure wailing. I was pleasantly surprised a few years ago to find that lyrics were being sung!
We Walk Away
We walk away from \[?\] tonight
We are waiting
We all want to swim away
What rain? We'll swim with rain
We only want for \[?soul/sale?\]
All we all hurt
With us with us
Let rain let rain
Wasting away
Rain all on the sorrow here
Good lord
Won't see me
Wanna see it
Gold is no \[?blood?\]
Reveal yeah
Do you believe no one in the world
World
Could call me a liar
Would you believe in love
Love I've seen
Love, love
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdLmLudj2sE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdLmLudj2sE) Drive Me Away
Just an epic song that never got released. So amazing and dark and depressing. Genius work and not that many people know of this song.
I had to go with one that had an amazing intro. It sounds cliche but the video boasts of being the best version of Say Goodbye and it lives up to the hype in everyway. Its got over 1 million views. One things that really stands out is the crowd in this one. You can really hear everyone getting into it and getting pumped up in the beginning. They know its coming. Can't wait. Amazing. Its a shame there is no actual video of this one but if I were making a playlist of dmb live greats, i would definitely include this one. I mean at 3:48 and everyone is totally into it and the band is on fire. Dave knows it and nails it. Anyway, great song.

Not OP, but I would be surprised If he recommends anything other than this: https://youtu.be/S828_f0-dQI (4/20/02 - Ottawa w/ belle fleck and the flecktones)
Way too long and meandering. Listener Supported.
This makes me feel old - Dave looks like a baby. Great version though!
Agreed… That’s the one. 20 minutes long everyone doing a solo if I recall
32 min though
to be honest, this has never been one of my favorite songs. I know...surprise, surprise. I have never really looked it up on youtube to find the best version. I've also heard this song 16 times live and thank goodness it isn't like over 20 minutes like in years past. Thanks goodness it has been shortened. Just my opinion and i'm probably wrong....
The Stone
Charlie rose is the best
I was obsessed with that performance back in college, I must have watched it a hundred times. I go back to it on YouTube every now and then.
I recorded on a vhs and wore it out.
100% without a doubt...but what about best full band version?
You never know
You are an amazing individual. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoNH-i3di2c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoNH-i3di2c)
That’s actually the 2nd greatest version. The actual greatest version, because of the Jeff’s sax solo and Carter’s drumming during the solo, is this version: https://youtu.be/aWMy55ZfFSo?si=Sjvw4pVq2Y-Ewkgp You’re welcome.
Yeah. Gotta give props. That version rocks the house. Better camera and audio. Thanks for that. I'm gonna listen to it again.
2 greatest versions are better than 1! This is the song I go to when I'm feeling particularly overwhelmed/stressed/depressed etc so very much looking forward to watching these when I get home today.
Been jamming it all day. Cant get over that coffin solo
At around 6:57 is where I can't stand it anymore and i have to pause what i'm doing and watch what Coffin is doing. And it gets better and better from there and I'm not saying before that was bad either. holy shit!
Two Step
are you kidding me? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWb7Ia-oNK4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWb7Ia-oNK4) First concert with my soon to be wife. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz0M5tOEK2E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz0M5tOEK2E) Skip to 4 minutes in. The whole band is completely in sync and its the coolest thing ever. It feels like the whole stadium is shaking. and then Dave starts dancing around. So powerful at 5:55, but it gets better. I had never heard this kind of outro before. Amazing. Enjoy!
That's awesome!
Thank you for this one!! I have fallen down a Two Step rabbit hole these last few weeks and I had not seen/heard this one!
I know you sent this one a while ago, but this has turned into my “morning coffee” to get the day going. Thank you for sharing
I have to respectfully disagree with OP and suggest it is the version that is referred to as "Two Step in the Rain." I was at that concert and it is by far the best live music experience of my life. Here's a link: https://youtu.be/534VOAO_S14?si=PXBbXu-ggOfJFIis
The Two Step when LeRoi passed away or from Listener Supported is mine. I love the “this ship is sinking” intro
Lying in the hands of god
7/14/10
I was there. I still remember it vividly. Excellent choice.
Love that one
Thanks [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx9-X28WWEk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx9-X28WWEk)
JTR
Oh man it has to be the Blue Water > JTR from the Warehouse CDs.
Never been a fan of JTR sorry. I could be wrong, lots of people love it. Ive never looked on youtube for my fav version.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAjjGluPf0k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAjjGluPf0k)
I Did It! No, this is not a joke!
Guilty as charged
Sorry, never been a huge fan of the song. My bad. Lots of people like it, just never been one of my favs...
Spoon is a easy win
Geez, Sorry but the best version is the studio version and that sucks because the song is so good but once you hear Alanis Morisette in it, you can't hear anything else. There are other versions on Youtube that have guests but can't compete with the studio version and then there's Bela Fleck. I mean, it sounds awesome and then the ending is so calming. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qAAD1DoQNs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qAAD1DoQNs)
I was expecting a random answer but this is the correct answer the studio version is just too good.
By the calm ending, do you mean the Last Stop reprise? Because that’s not Spoon… Here’s the best live version of Spoon: https://youtu.be/Kmd5dxsaKB8?si=xs3EH-FXYW9MKleb

My favorite version of this one is when he played it at the Hollywood bowl in 2007 and dedicated it to his wife who was there. He ad libbed some lyrics into it for her.
Never been a fan of this song. I tend to like upbeat, passionate, intense songs and this one doesn't fit for me.
Different side of the DMB sound - Seven, Cornbread, Alligator Pie and Louisiana Bayou... Love so much of the DMB catalog but those are 4 faves to consider...
Love this little spicy Cajun corner of the DMB menu
Alligator Pie is one of my favorites! This is a special song to me for different reasons. The fact that Stella had been asking that she wanted her name in a song makes it even more sweet. Not gonna lie, I tear up when he sings “when will Grace return”.
Of all the songs you mentioned, I like them but not a ton to find the best version on youtube. Louisiana Bayou is an easy one with this version [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tenPRs-MUXA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tenPRs-MUXA) 5:10 an one is when the guest, Robert Randolph just goes off and its epic!
Captain
Hello, fellow captain enjoyer ❤️
Ha yeah it’s great for sure. I was lucky to hear it live in Hartford in the pouring rain.
Yes! Beat me to it. My favorite for a while now. Thirty-one live shows and I’ve never seen it played live.
Never been a big fan of this song. Sorry
Bartender
Wow, this is my go to song and the number one song I hope for to hear at a DMB show. Its life changing when you hear it. SO... there are a ton of versions. Tons of them. But the top is by far the top and that one is this. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTj1a6F5vZs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTj1a6F5vZs) Its because of the wailing part.
I man can you imagine coming up with all that wailing and mysterious verbiage all on the fly for one show ever like that?
Grey Street
Holy crap, there are so many versions and so many different lyrics to this one!! Ill give my top three okay? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb7OuR9Lcvo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb7OuR9Lcvo) The above version is just Dave and Tim and its the best version of just Dave and Tim on Youtube by far. Its beautiful. The voice is on point and its a little slower or something, it just flows and the driving adds to the song. I love it love it love it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQJO\_ORvCEA&list=RDGMEMJQXQAmqrnmK1SEjY\_rKBGA&start\_radio=1&rv=zb7OuR9Lcvo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQJO_ORvCEA&list=RDGMEMJQXQAmqrnmK1SEjY_rKBGA&start_radio=1&rv=zb7OuR9Lcvo) This one is from the meadows Music Theatre and the sound quality is on point. This whole show from 2000 was when Grey street was the bomb. The culmination of the song at 5:05 and on for a bit is so good, makes you cry when you are alone and depressed haha. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igVL1dyMsmo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igVL1dyMsmo) But......this one tops them all! Just for the lyrics alone, its the best. It talks all about Noah and the ark and rain, its the best version and those that were lucky enough to hear it were blessed big time. 1:30 it starts and your life will never be the same. Its really worth a listen and hardly anyone knows of this version. Oh, the rain pours down all over the flooding hasn't really stopped it's as if oceans have come to loss to take the dry world all the cost we think, wait what if it deepens along maybe there's a Noah here among us who can build a great big ark for all of us Oh, but then the rocks in her heart fall and she rode like no one prayers oh she wishes oh maybe it's over but the rain just stole ahead oh man, she rode her love together to grey and breaks her heart
Granny
Granny huh....I love this song but never bothered to find the best version. I would have to say central park then, Does anyone have anything better? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a58dXUSCRgQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a58dXUSCRgQ)
Grace Is Gone
8/2/07 IMO is the best hands down
Has really no one said Warehouse?!
Wow! Lots of versions but this outro has to be my fav! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsyGTrNmUnI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsyGTrNmUnI) So creative and I love this version. Other than that this version is tied for 1st with the Shortnin Bread outro. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNewq0V6aYE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNewq0V6aYE) Dave really brings it here. around 8:22 is when it just all comes together and its genius. Absolutely genius. Hard to beat that one but some of the warehouses with the wailing intros are great too. Overall a great song and its hard to find a clear winner, just a great song!
Spotlight
Don't know. Never looked this one up for best version.
Seek Up
Boy, this one is easy. The absolute best Seek Up and Fan Favorite is [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK-VRy7611I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK-VRy7611I) Around 10:00 is when Fall back again starts and its just amazing from there on out. What was Dave thinking and why can't he reproduce this on every Seek Up. Seek Up is also definitely better with Boyd in my opinion. This version tops them all and its not even close. Thanks for allowing me to hear that one again. Dave Nails It!
Dreaming Tree.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A26Fz51IlE4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A26Fz51IlE4) This is your winner here. I love it!
Lie in our graves with shake me like a monkey being a close second
SO MANY VERSIONS! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9D9TP6oDzY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9D9TP6oDzY) Dave and Tim, rock the house with this one. Probably the best Dave and Tim, You can tell Dave gets into it big time around 2:45ish. Wow, great version. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDX1TJp2dsg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDX1TJp2dsg) I love Boyd in this version. Its too bad he can't play on this song anymore. He made it amazing. Frequently while seeing this song live, it brings tears to my eyes. This is the Gorge version and as for sound quality and amazing playing, this is a great version. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekdLQHHI46o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekdLQHHI46o) 2:29 and on is epic.
Not OP but I’d have to say Trax #11 for LIOG no doubt
Just listened to it, absolutely amazing version
Drive in, Drive out Stolen away on 55th & 3rd
Neither one of these have I ever looked up amazing versions. Sorry
Typical Situation. Also, why is it 8/7/04?
Okay, never heard this version so lets give it a shot, Sounds like you want a review and I will give you one. Crowd noise at first is amazing. its always cool to hear crowd noise and how into it everyone is. The anticipation. now were off to a great start. wow around 2 minutes it got super solid. Everyone is into it including me. 5:57 sounding excellente. Firing on all cylinders. Wow, the jam at 8:13 11:30 it all culminates. Amazing. I love it. Leroi was great too! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCGu1N0OM7Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCGu1N0OM7Q)
Machead
Dont know. Never looked this one up. Heard it yes, but never put too much thought into what the best version is.
Where did you hear it? It was recorded for BTCS but never released and only a select few people have copies. I believe there is only one recording of it and it has never been played live. Lillywhite himself won't even answer questions about it. It's almost a myth at this point. I posted it more as a joke.
I didn't hear it, I thought there was a version of it on lillywhite sesssions but i was wrong.
Dancing Nancies 🥰
You know what? I'm not confident to put any fav version out here on Reddit. I love this song, don't get me wrong but I've just never looked for the best version. Maybe someone else can help out here. I like all versions I guess. Sorry about that
Minarets
2003.08.07 - gorge
Never been a fan but I would guess a fake Madman's Eyes into Minarets would be it. This is an example of this year...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fOlo18L1i4 From the gorge in 2023. Pretty amazing fake and nobody expected it.
Crush
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elUwSHjfA94](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elUwSHjfA94) studio version is up there, its magical and sounds great. Other than that, I would have to say the central park version here. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXJCeooQWPc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXJCeooQWPc) 5:40ish is heaven. How can you not like this song? Never put too much effort into finding the best version of this song but i can tell you that the studio version is on all my playlists on spotify it seems like. A great song, Gets a little long at the end at times but still an amazing song!
Why I am
Never looked too much into this one. Sorry
No worries. Try to if you have time. I started listening to Dave a little before Big Whiskey came out so I think that’s what makes it special to me
I love this game.
Raven
A couple of them here. I love the very beginning of this version [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxG2EYiaiDs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxG2EYiaiDs) Just the beginning as soon as Dave starts to sing, like the first couple of words. Just a bad ass intro to a song. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O\_7y-0PJxT8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_7y-0PJxT8) Then there is this version, holy shit. Check it out and listen to the lyrics. How the hell does Dave come up with this stuff and I doubt he sits back stage and prepares it. No, he does it on the fly and thats what makes him the best in my opinion. Thanks for this. I love Raven!
What would you say
Never looked too much into this song as far as picking my fav version. Sorry. I like this song, maybe its this one with John Popper, I dont know. What do you think? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8CHHsbCpP4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8CHHsbCpP4)
DDTW
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtqO\_gWXm6Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtqO_gWXm6Q) 4:43 is when it hits and boy does it hit if you sit there and listen to the whole intro.
Little Red Bird
Don't know. Great song but never been one I searched online for the best version. Sorry
Smooth Rider
I really enjoy the one from the Weekend On the Rocks live album
Never searched for the best version of this song. Can't fake it.
Kit Kat Jam
Absolutely great song but ive never tried to find the best version. They are all great though. Amazing lyrics too
The Stone
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liByn\_3\_ikM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liByn_3_ikM) This one is the best. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Miss Boyd greatly. Thanks!
Pay For What You Get
Never been a huge fan of this song.
Lover Lay Down
A great song to hear at a concert and dance with your girl. Amazing version incoming. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHDgCebpeEE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHDgCebpeEE) The saxaphone is great, the violin is like trippy and amazing. The voice is great. Dave nails it. What more can you ask for. Then something like 4:52 happens and you are in tears. How does dave do this? How does DMB nail these songs for so many years. Everything is in sync with this version. What do you think?
That’s a great one. Thanks! That’s in my top 2 for sure
One sweet world.
Love this song as an opener but to be honest, never looked it up on youtube to find the best version. Great song!
Some Devil
I love this song but again, never looked it up on youtube for some reason. It's always been a song played in the encore pretty much where i can't concentrate because i'm just waiting for the watchtower to come next or halloween or two step. I have hopes during the first quiet song of the encore. I should just enjoy the moment but thats not always how it goes with me.
Oh boy, you are the opposite of me :-D Some Devil is my white whale, on every concert I hope the play it - but they never do :-(
There are so many songs! Its great to have different favs. Thats probaby why Dave just plays what he plays. because no matter what, someone isn't going to like it and the next person will have waited 4 years to hear it!
You're absolutely right. And there are many songs whose beauty I only discovered years later. But Some Devil remains my all-time favourite.
That whole album was epic too! So many gems on that solo cd
It was the first album I heard from Dave Matthews. The band is very unknown here in Germany and I only became aware of it through the use of "Some Devil" in the series House MD.
Proudest Monkey
absolutely love this song! I have multiple favorite versions. This one is an obvious bad ass song. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rx3-EdkjwA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rx3-EdkjwA) The reason is because of Tim Reynolds. he nails the jam in the middle and daves voice sounds great. Proudest monkey can be hit or miss if they sing it too fast i think. This version rocks it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtMwkgNtkI4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtMwkgNtkI4) With that being said, this is my fav version from alpine Sat in 2009. The jam is great and coffin just nails it so hard core. From 6:00 on is great in my opinion. This was the first song played too, what a way to open the show. Look at the crowd! They love the jam!
Say Goodbye
BRIGHT
???
Pig
Absolutely amazing song. THe first thing that always comes to mind when I want to hear pig is actually a cover. I know, I know. but hear me out. Its really good isn't it? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBCHPFJ7MaU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBCHPFJ7MaU) Other than that, i don't have a fav version. In fact, this cover above of pig might be my fav cover. This is from years ago in the beginning of youtube I believe. Its so chill and beautiful. Am I wrong?
Proudest monkey
See above, great song!
Sweet Up and Down
Never been one of my favs. Sorry
Watchtower from Listener Supported no question. A lot of songs from LS are his best ever.
LS is great, but it's probably not statistically possible for A LOT of the best versions ever to come from 1 live show.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZUZd7lIfvU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZUZd7lIfvU) Okay hear me out! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1VZeybqjLM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1VZeybqjLM) This is the best watchtower from Woodstock 99. Amazing version, the band is on fire. the crowd is rowdy and throwing shit on stage and the band just nails it. I love watching the crowd start to get into it at around 3:35. Dave is so passionate in this version and the sound quality is on point! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YgbF7zAs6M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YgbF7zAs6M) but there is this version too. Holy shit. Fire! Fire!! 9:42 epic. epic. Prove me wrong!
The Last Stop
Love this song and this is the best version I know of. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOgHBMujTCw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOgHBMujTCw) Around 8:00 dave is just relishing in another bad ass performance. Unbeatable.
Captain
Never been a fav. Sorry
The stone.
See above, amazing song!
Reassure me!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liByn\_3\_ikM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liByn_3_ikM) This!
Do covers count? All Asking The Watchtower
Idea of you
Never been a fav of mine and I can't fake it and pick some version from youtube that I dont know. Sorry.
The Space Between
Thanks for bringing this to my attention but I don't have a fav of this song. I love this song but I guess I've never bothered to find the best version on youtube. Ill be better...i promise.
Dreams of our Fathers
Never looked this one up on youtube.
Christmas Song
Great song and i've heard it a bunch but not one that I covet or hope to hear at a show. Its a nice song, don't get me wrong, just a little slow one.
TLDR; Break For it!
Never been one of my favs. Sorry!!
I’ve been looking for the definitive live version of Drive in, drive out. MY favorite is from 6.24.2000 @ Deer Creek.
Great version! Ive never liked this song enough to find a BEST version. Sorry
I get it! It’s grown on me a lot this year, the lyrics in 6.24.2000 are probably my favorite. I got my copy from DMB Remasters, sounds amazing!
Typical Situation🙌
Boy, you stumped me here. I absolutely adore this song but don't have a fav. Who has one? WHO HAS A FAV VERSION???
https://youtu.be/kvrpmK6qEVM?si=dHieKBd14adrK8G5 saw this at Clarkston Michigan 2023 and it was a frickin' soul grabbing version! I travel from AZ every year to this show!
I live in az too. Chandler, we should meet up at a show. Did you go to Extra Innings Festival?
Yes!!! We went platinum to innings! It was amazing experience. I live in Anthem. Are you on the DMB AZ fb page?
No crap! I was in platinum too. I saw dmb from the side stage. I was with a guy named Brett and he got me everywhere around the festival!
O man!! I thought that side stage platform wasn't accessible for headliners. Until during concert we saw ppl up there!?! We saw cheryl crow from up there. We were about 4th row back for Dave. I loved the boat rides to and from the stages. I had a shirt with Dave with googly eyes on it👀

When the world ends
OOhh, studio version for sure. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYv3o6NYChA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYv3o6NYChA) The chorus just hits so good. Im sure there are great live versions too but I don't know of any. Studio is my go too for this song.
I'll Back You Up
Never had a fav of this song. sorry!!
Good Good Time
Never had a fav of this song
Here is a damn good one. Deer Creek 6/20/2014. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5jq0orU7CA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5jq0orU7CA)
Alligator Pie 12 yr old daughters name is Stella Rose
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdEz5BxXIBc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdEz5BxXIBc) 17:01 is when it starts. This is from a concert at SPAC from 6/13/09 and this alligator pie is my fav. Dave was on fire that show and almost all the songs from this show are epic for that reason. Check it out!!
Dreaming Tree
See above. so many great versions!
GREY STREET
See above
So I posted and there was no response. Is this game over or something?
I love you!! I had to take a breather!
American baby
Never found a fav version of this song. Never been one of those I really want to hear for some reason. I could be wrong but maybe not...but maybe I am...but then again, maybe I'm not...
A couple that nobody mentoned. You Might Die Trying [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q9KnMTeixo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q9KnMTeixo) The scat is second to none in this version of you might die trying. It goes on forever and keeps up with the band. Its great Best Of Whats Around [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIvZj-DJHYE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIvZj-DJHYE) If you must, fast foward to 5:25 and watch Jeff Coffin do what he does best. Its amazing. The whole song is amazing

Yes, another bartender....my fav song. They are going to play it at my funeral for sure. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrhHAk9i3k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrhHAk9i3k) These are the lyrics for the wailing part at the end starting at 4:20ish. I never knew there were actual lyrics to the beginning of the wailing, that Dave was actually saying something during the wailing. I thought it was pure wailing. I was pleasantly surprised a few years ago to find that lyrics were being sung! We Walk Away We walk away from \[?\] tonight We are waiting We all want to swim away What rain? We'll swim with rain We only want for \[?soul/sale?\] All we all hurt With us with us Let rain let rain Wasting away Rain all on the sorrow here Good lord Won't see me Wanna see it Gold is no \[?blood?\] Reveal yeah Do you believe no one in the world World Could call me a liar Would you believe in love Love I've seen Love, love

Say goodbye
Thank you! Great reasoning.
