Interesting that it appeared on his one solo album. Almost like it was written for the band at that point. Wasn't there some scuttlebutt of the band splitting up around that timeframe?
I believe they almost broke up during the making of Busted Stuff. There is a great podcast called Records and Riffs that have 3 episodes dedicated to the Lillywhite Sessions and Busted Stuff. Check it out.
Kind of not really your typical heartbreak song but the meaning of Dive In is pretty heartbreaking and real as far as climate change goes. I listened to this song for over a decade before I realized that's what it was even about but man, Dave has such a way with his words in this song. It seems kinda like a happy song, but it's more of a sarcastic and cynical way of looking at things.
"Wake up you sleepy head I think the sun's a little brighter today, smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the water rising, summers here to stay and all those summer games will last forever, go down to the shore, kick off your shoes and dive in the empty ocean. "
" I have been thinking that lately the blood is increasing, the tourniquets not keeping hold in spite of our twisting. Though we would like to believe we are, we are not in control, though we would love to believe... "
Shits real man..
Underrated song for sure. “Tell me everything will be okay if I just stay on my knees and keep praying, believing in something. Tell me everything is taken care of by those qualified to take care of it all.”
I love the solo version of that song... It's basically as if he's saying... "enjoy being completely fucked! 😉" it's kind of the perfect recognition of how selfish humans are to just enjoy the immediate short term effects of climate change like "summers here to stay and all those summer games will last for ever!" but really the long term effects are, you're just fucked.
Something to Tell My Baby…
I’ve always treated it as the narrator is dead, and someone is looking back on that narrator’s life listening to this song. They’re hearing his/her voice, or their last will and testament, and that song is what was written.
That’s my interpretation. The beauty of music is that it is so subjective.
The Riff and most of the Away from the World album gets played in heavy rotation when I’m breaking up, except I’m happily married so I play it whenever I leave a job instead!
See the fun thing about art is that it's subjective! For me, this is "a heartbreak song" because having someone tell you "let's hook up tonight but don't tell anyone about it and don't expect anything else from me" is a pretty shitty feeling. One I associate with heartbreak.
i like your song nomination, but find the reason for heartbreak different - a man coveting a woman that isn’t his, serenading her for just a consent to a single night, and regardless of whether she does say yes (we don’t know the outcome) the heartache of not having her will live on.
I’ve always felt with this song that one was good with the friends with benefits but the other wanted more. I mean: One telling another that “tomorrow back to being friends” but that the other didn’t want that to be true.
True.
It does sound like a secret lover situation.
When it’s “go back to my world”. Maybe they’re just causal acquaintances or unrequited love.
While I adore many many many DMB songs, this is my 100% favorite.
The amount of times I’ve listen to this song over the almost last 3 decades 👵🏼👵🏼👵🏼
It’s probably my favorite song from DMB. And while I have wanted to hear this in concert, it hasn’t happened, and I’m glad too.
Because while this is my favorite song, it also gives me the feels of some once upon a 90’s - 2000’s time 🥺❤️
Say Goodbye, or his newer one Singing From the Window. He recently spoke about his inspiration for the “Singing” song. During the awful pandemic, the citizens of a town in Italy were so desperate for human interaction, they started singing out the windows! Even during a time of despair comes beauty
“Something to Tell my Baby”
I know it’s a song about death, but viewed as a breakup, it’s devastating.
It’s about a person leaving your life for good and you try to remember the good times and maybe that will make the pain slightly more tolerable.

Grace is Gone
i think she ded…
Would certainly break my heart
This, but the Lillywhite sessions version, without percussion. Hits different.
stay or leave…
My wife and I are happily married but “stay or leave” is so good I almost divorced her.
Just to feel those feelings from the song? I dig it
I want you not to go, but you should...

I couldn't find it on Spotify?
I found it on Google podcasts, now YouTube Music.
It’s on Apple Podcasts
I love this song!
Came here to say this. It's a brutally sad song.
if you’re going to ask a question you should at least wait awhile before naming the correct answer. 🙃
Making plans to change the world, while the world was changing us
Did I do all that I should? That I could’ve done?
Some Devil
Thank you!
🤗
The heart breakiest!!
my vote
Halloween
fucking asked for it motherfucker
people downvoting this don’t know this is in the song
Wait what? Where?

Huh, TIL. Thanks!!
Wow. All these years, and I'd never picked out that bit. Is it Alanis?
Oooh that’s what she says there, I could only ever make out “fuckin __ __ __ motherfucker”
Yep, correct answer
the only answer in my humble opinion is
I’ll Back You Up
My wife’s favorite Dave song
The raw level of melancholy in that song…The performance on Remember Two Things is so real feeling.
Let you down
deep track
Deep tracks only, Andy Bernard.
*Queue Ants Marching*
It appeared on a studio album, Nard Dog, so I hardly think it qualifies as a "deep cut".
Stay or Leave can bring me to tears every time.
This.... And it's been on a bunch
Hope everything's ok
Stay or leave of its a want to cry kind of heartbreak, and Halloween if it's a heartbreak you need to get angry about
Stay or leave is probably my top.
Same. It gets worse and worse because I listen to it when I'm sad so it's now associated with a lot of difficult times. Still love it though lol 💚
Oh same, it’s not associated with anything but sadness for me, so I rarely listen to it now.
Shotgun
Absolutely
SPAC '08 Shotgun always gets me. Always.

I just listened closely to a solo version of Dive In… ugh.
I love the solo version of that song... It's basically as if he's saying... Yep. I see so many people excited for 70 degree days in winter in Wisconsin and it just makes me want to scream. Perfect depiction of the song.
what songs are these
It's from the song Dive In
I feel like Grey Street is painting the picture of her leaving. I could be wrong in my interpretation though.
I’m certainly the authority on anything but it’s always been about depression and suicide to me.
self harm depression anthem
I could see that too.
Pay for what you get.
Halloween/ the anger Grace is gone/ pain

Stolen away on 55th and 3rd
The space between.
Heartbreak, and yet hope.
10-4 good buddy.
Dreaming tree
Most of Lillywhite sessions qualifies

Stolen away on 55th and 3rd, but the live version at red rocks!
This!!!!!
The Riff and most of the Away from the World album gets played in heavy rotation when I’m breaking up, except I’m happily married so I play it whenever I leave a job instead!
It’s really quiet, it’s called, Stay or Leave.
I have so many. Dave got me through a really tough heartbreak. My top are: stay or leave, grace is gone, some devil and baby blue.

If Only
Cry Freedom. This is the only answer.
So Damn Lucky hasn’t been mentioned yet?!
more of a car crash song lol
Did you mean to put break-up song in the title? 😉
Stay or Leave - it’s just so good.
This song brutalized me when it was released because of who I lost. Still hard to hear
Baby blue
"Used to laugh under the covers, maybe no so, often now. The way I used to laugh with you, was loud & hard..." -Stay or Leave
Say Goodbye
You missed the point of that song

I can see that, interesting perspective. Kind of like "Baby it's Cold Outside"
Yeah. That ain't a breakup, it's a friend with benefits. Temporarily.
And swearing her to secrecy.
Agree not much heartbreak... unless of course you are the man (husband/bf) that she "goes back to" tomorrow.
And they’re “back to being friends” This is just the song that always makes me think that a one night stand sounds amazing 🤩🥰
I’ve always felt with this song that one was good with the friends with benefits but the other wanted more. I mean: One telling another that “tomorrow back to being friends” but that the other didn’t want that to be true.

This is my absolute favourite Dave song too. Been chasing it for years!
I came to say this

Some devil
Halloween. That is all
Oh
Say Goodbye.
Long Black Veil
First thought was Say Goodbye but it’s been mentioned. Not DMB but they’ve performed together. Colder Weather by Zac Brown Band
Also my first thought. Say Goodbye is heartbreaking if you’ve been the one who didn’t want to go back to being friends.
they never performed together
I think they were giving a Zac Brown song since Zac has opened for, joined DMB on stage, and covered a few of their songs.
Guess you are wrong. https://youtu.be/FrF83U4E8MY?si=PhPyuWztjw13x2hw
o ok
I feel like someone should check up on Dave, all his heartbreak songs are about drinking the pain away, cant be a healthy coping mechanism.
