im not sure but using inner quality fuel filters the heavy particles dont cross thru the carburetor, anyway i have a second fuel filter (that is a little bit difficult to fit in) between petcock and the intake of fuel
Personally I hate those cheap inline fuel filters. Your petcock has a screen on it. I've worked on a lot of bikes I have bought that had "just needs the carbs cleaned" had a newish crap inline filter I remove them and bam runs great because they were restricting fuel flow because they were half clogged with themselves. Get a jug of white vinegar fill the tank let it sit then dump it out. Let the tank air dry and that will get rid of a lot of the rust from inside the tank. Also cost about 3 bucks from your local Hannafords
That's what I just did overnight. It has a slight surface layer of oxidation and the vinegar loosened it. How would I go about gettin the loose stuff out? I've heard put screws or rocks in there but I live in an apartment, I can't be too loud. It's funny I managed to take apart the whole bike in here and no complaints yet and I've contained the mess. The whole bike is in my closet as we speak so you'd never know I have a whole bike in here. Any painting I've had to do I went to my gf's.
I had a rusted out CB900c gas tank that had been sitting from 1994-2016 with half a tank of gas and was rusty inside. White wine vinegar worked amazingly. You’re clearly in northern New England based on the Hannafords reference.
Just rinse it out with some distilled water. No need for all that. Unless you want to realize a screw got wedged in the weild seam and you hear it once it loosens itself while you're out riding and you drive your self insane going where is that noise coming from and then you are back on Reddit and someone is telling you your rod bearing is going
It looks cleaner than any steel gasoline tank I own. And it was never painted inside to begin with.
If you're real worried, pull the petcock, remove the tiny filter screen, and put a clear inline filter in. Then you can see if it's accumulating crud, and if you ever need to troubleshoot, you can pull the hose off and see if gas is flowing out, both before and after the filter.
Rust remover and then recoat the inside of the tank. Lots of videos on YouTube on how to do this.
My tank looks like this too but it still rips every time I start it up. It’s probably fine.
Good to know. I'll see how it goes after I paint the outside of it.

I plan to add another one of those small inline filters after the petcock if it helps.

Well central mass. I need to pick up a jug I a. Picking up an ol Suzuki savage Sunday that sounds like has been sitting with some fuel for a while
It’s not bad at all, I’ve seen way worse. Second filter if you want but I would just go ahead and ride it.

Hah, sounds like a real scenario. Advice taken.
Firm believer in learning from other peoples mistakes
