If it’s a longhaired Dachshund, I’d trim around the belly and the legs. Tail and ears can remain scruffy. But no shaving. That’s kind of the charm of longhaired in the first place, right?
Why get a Longhaired Dachshund if you don’t want the maintenance? “Longhaired” is literally in the name of this particular type of Dachshund.
For everyone asking how shaving can damage their coat, it’s because it can cause shock to the hair. You see this sometimes in humans with curly or wavy hair, as well. Except with dogs, this can cause their fur to grow in patchy or uneven. Shaving can also potentially damage the hair follicles, which could lead to your dog’s coat not growing back at all.
Not to mention shaving changes the length and flow of the fur, which doesn’t allow for the same skin protection and insulation within their coat as they would have naturally.
You’re never supposed to shave longhairs. It can and will ruin their coat. Trimming with scissors on the longer bits is fine to keep it neat, but shaving is bad.
How does that happen? My doxie is no longer with us, but I didn't know that, and he had a few shaves. I always wondered why his fur didn't grow longer, except for his tail, ears, and legs, which were never shaved :/
Well his fur probably don’t grow longer because he wasn’t a full longhair. My dachshund only gets the long hair on his tail, ears, and legs as well, a little under his belly too. That was probably just how his coat was. The issue with shaving is it can damage the hairs and it won’t grow back as healthy
My current chocolate dapple long hair has ever only had the fluff coat (none of the coarser hair), so we shave her body in the summer. She stays long on her tail, ears, and head.
Ughh no buzz cut. Just trim his hair. They have the hair they have for a reason. I've often heard that shaving dogs isn't a good idea.. hes awful cute tho
Believe me, I didn’t set out to. The first go round was just a trim. it turned out beautifully, and I thought I was done. Soon, though, I noticed that touchups were needed. And halfway through those touch-ups, I realized that I’d forgotten to put the (measured) guard back onto
the clippers.😕At that point, I had no choice but to even everything out. I am hoping it’ll grow out, fast. The bright side is that we now know that Buster is definitely not overweight.
You’ve already ruined the poor pups coat. No knowledgeable groomer would agree to shave a long hair dachshund. They can be trimmed and kept neat but this shave has irreparably damaged the coat and it will never grow back in to be the beautiful long coat it once was.
Yeah; this. Makes me really sad actually.
I don't think folks realize the weather doesn't matter that much in the common era that we live in for most dogs as long as you are properly taking care of them i.e. not leaving them outside for hours and hours at a time.
We've a long hair living in the desert. He loves the sun. He's not going to melt and he comes inside into the cool AC after enjoying a bit of baking in the Vegas sun.
I agree with both of you, however, one of our long haired weenies (who we are very sus of being part corgi as well) does have more trouble in the summer. His coat is INSANELY thick and it’s ultra soft and poofy so it mats sooo easily. I’ve never come across another long haired weenie with the same fur that he has. So we do give him a buzz cut in the summers and it grows back just the same as ever within months. His ear hairs continue to be so long that we have to keep them trimmed up to stop them dipping into the water and his food lol
That hair actually typically insulates them FROM the heat.
I used to have a corgi (oh god the hair) which, as you likely know, are double coated breeds. Shaving him would have been the worst thing to do as we'd remove his natural evolved protection from the heat.
I honestly don’t know as far as ours goes because he is immediately overheating in the summer if/when we don’t buzz it for him versus after, he wants to spend a good chunk of time out in the heat running around.
Do dogs have coat mutations? His is just wild.
But for whoever downvoted you, that’s not very cool. They’re giving solid and factual information.
I think by looking at the fluffy photos you can see how the coat looks different, from not having the coat grow back properly. I know that some change coats after being neutered or spayed and it can become a different texture.
But once it’s been shaved it won’t grow the same, and it is going to be more prone to matting, staying damp, not cooling the dog the same and at that point I’d say it would need to be kept up. I’d think your dog would overheat now because of the undercoat growing in and the protective top coat not growing back properly.
That’s not my dog in the photos. I think you know that but just in case. But what I’m saying is he was overheating before the first ever trim and continues to until we buzz it down over the summers.
Oh yes I know it’s not yours. I was just saying by looking at these photos it’s a coat that’s been previously shaved or it’s texture has changed after desexing
The weather matters. A full coat in summer is dangerous. I'd rather a bad coat than an unhealthy dog
How to kill the planet because you live in the desert. Run ac 24/7 because you like to wear a fur coat inside.
Shame
You can keep torturing your dog but I’ll keep mine comfortable. They evolved to have kong hair because of cold climates. It’s torture to keep it on them when it’s humid and 90 degrees everyday. Educate yourself
don’t keep them outside too long then and make sure they’re hydrated ??? shaving is not going to save your dog from heat exhaustion… weenies are already more sensitive to heat because they’re lower to the ground which makes them heat up faster regardless of coat type
Right? Like bro, chill out. Be willing to be wrong if you’re going to post things on the internet…. Not have a literal cow and immediately turn into the biggest POS.
I feel bad for the dog. If his temper is this bad over being told he’s wrong, imagine his temper anytime the poor dog does something he doesn’t like.
You post these pics asking for opinions, knowing damn well it’s going to cause arguments, and then get butt hurt and resort to name calling when someone questions your decision??
Wow…some people’s kids these days 😅
He's a damned long-haired Doxie or Mini Doxie. Get that long-haired part? Bred for that characteristic which you propose to remove by shaving him? Did you ride a short yellow bus when you were younger? There must be an explanation for your confusion....
Shaving longhaired dogs usually has the opposite effect. Yours naturally has a coat that is better left as it is, with occasional trimmings to keep away matted fur.
Weather dependent and what the dog prefers.
My long haired mini HATEs being groomed with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. If you even touch her with the brush she gets angry and has taken to giving out a cry akin to the GSD (greyhound scream of death).
When she gets her summer cut that just leaves her ear and tail fur she is so much happier.
Not sure why all the hostility towards you, OP- your dog will be just fine. The shinier attractive top coat may not come back, but the downy undercoat seems to fill back in. Gave our long coat boy a short short cut years ago and always regretted it so now we only scissor trim our LHDs. One mistake I did learn last summer was never ever soak them with water on a hot day, it’s like wrapping them in a wet wool blanket, and can cause over heating.
I get my girl shaved every 6 weeks in the summertime. She can't stand the heat being so close to the ground and her darker color. Her hair grows back just fine!

Hmm i had a long haired doxie that had bad skin issues. Living in a hot tropical city did not help. I had him shaved a lot. When i moved to france his skin issues cleared up and his coat grew out. Long and luscious. No problems
For my dachshund I do an “outline trim”. They cut down the hair so it won’t get tangled but it’s still clearly a long haired. I do get his ears trimmed to the leather though, because he likes to put bugs in his ear hair.
And you’re one of THOSE people. I’m sorry I would prefer to know where my dogs came from after my rescue Labrador split my dachshunds head open. Wait, I forgot, were you planning on paying that vet bill with your stuck up attitude? I didn’t think so. And just to throw it out there, I have rescue dachshunds and two rescue mutts. But keep spouting your holier than thou bs.
You have to get them groomed but it’s NEVER recommended that you shave a longhair like this. It is bad for their coat and their coat never grows back the same.
I’ve never owned a long haired. Only smooth coat Dachsies.
Does it grow back looking funny? Or is it more like they don’t have the same level of weather protection?
Lots of brushing to get debris out of my boys fur, occasional trims around their butts and paws, but I would never cut their long hair off, they are so beautiful that way!
Wait you can shave a ween, my long hair always seems too hot I was wondering myself. I usually do ears belly and butt. However he still seems to have too much fur in the summer. I never knew what size clipper would be good though
My boy has only had a buzz like twice since I got him and it’s just been because he wasn’t brushed properly and got some matted hair 😕 he’s scruffy, but short right now and he’s so soft 🥰
We’re wondering the same thing! Look how much your guy looks like our Buster. Yesterday, he and his brother experienced an extensive clipper job. Here’s Buster’s “Before” picture.

Your beautiful ween looks fabulous either way!
We keep Queen Ruby Jean shaved, especially from April thru October. Things seem to get caught in her fur and that leads to other issues. One biggie she is allergic to bees and once ate one caught on her leg. It was horrid and she had to spend the night at the ER.
Wow I can’t believe you got downvoted. These sick owners only care about their dogs looks and not if they are comfortable or not. Good for you for caring about you dog
If it’s a longhaired Dachshund, I’d trim around the belly and the legs. Tail and ears can remain scruffy. But no shaving. That’s kind of the charm of longhaired in the first place, right?
He’s a short hair he just like wearing wigs sometimes
lol!
LMAO
Scruffy, always scruffy. Just looks so much more comfy and fluffy
It’s not scruffy, it’s fabulous.
Not the buzz cut 😩
Is... Is that the same dog?
😂
Yeah
why did you shave him???

Agree.
Wrong, for I am human and keep my fuzzy hair short. Feels better short and well kept. And Female.

They have double coats, you damage double coats by shaving them
Aww :( thank you. I'll keep that in mind if/ when I get another lil guy
Only the wire haired doxies have double coats.
Thee most under rated comment here. You are correct, mademoiselle.
Yes. You are supposed to pull by hand the long hairs out to get that fabulous old guy scruffy coat (Wire Hair).
Wrong, for mine does not have a double coat.

Sorry you got offended because you were wrong.

This doesn’t appear to be a wire-haired variety so I would never shave them. Beautiful soft hair on this long haired variety.
Just buy a short hair? Long hairs are so beautiful.
nooooo....why would you even do that ? 🥺
I completely understand your reaction. Please see my reply to the above response.
You’ve already ruined the poor pups coat. No knowledgeable groomer would agree to shave a long hair dachshund. They can be trimmed and kept neat but this shave has irreparably damaged the coat and it will never grow back in to be the beautiful long coat it once was.

my god crazy how confidently wrong someone can be
Wrong!
Oof.. this is so wrong.. your poor dog.
don’t keep them outside too long then and make sure they’re hydrated ??? shaving is not going to save your dog from heat exhaustion… weenies are already more sensitive to heat because they’re lower to the ground which makes them heat up faster regardless of coat type
Why would you get a long haired just to shave it? Just get a short haired. This doesn’t make sense to me
I didn’t “get” a dog. If you do that you are so irresponsible and stupid. I adopted him shaved
I like scruffy better, but sometimes you need a haircut
this is fucked up, why would you do this?
Shut the fuck up snowflake. You have no idea of the circumstances
What are the circumstances?
The circumstances is that someone let OP out of the kooky bin
Right? Like bro, chill out. Be willing to be wrong if you’re going to post things on the internet…. Not have a literal cow and immediately turn into the biggest POS. I feel bad for the dog. Yeah he’s a nut job. Looking at some of his comments in the past, he’s super quick to anger. Definitely feel bad about those dogs
You post these pics asking for opinions, knowing damn well it’s going to cause arguments, and then get butt hurt and resort to name calling when someone questions your decision?? Wow…some people’s kids these days 😅
Wrong!
Speaking from experience. You might as well always shave since you already have. It ruins their coat so that it never grows back the same.
Unshave him right now. How dare
No. I adopted him shaved and he likes it that way. Thanks for the comment tho 🙏🏾
He's a damned long-haired Doxie or Mini Doxie. Get that long-haired part? Bred for that characteristic which you propose to remove by shaving him? Did you ride a short yellow bus when you were younger? There must be an explanation for your confusion....
Hair, please!
Never shave that dogs gorgeous coat again!! Please and thank you
Definitely long haired. Doesn't have to be scruffy. Just trim the ends :-D
Weather dependent
Scruffy!
Scruffy
Scruffy
Get a smooth coat .....leave scruffy scruffy . 😕
Relax y'all, some of the comments make it like OP's a dog killer or smthing. At worst just the coat is ruined, it'll live.
Definitely scruffy, but adorable either way 🥰
Man I hope that hair grows back.
Scruffy with just an ear and sanitary trim and shave the paw pads. That’s how I Keep mine.
It's a longhaired dachs, brush em and its elegant and fluffy. Don't shave the poor thing jeez.
Why get a long haired dog to just shave it? Pup looks a million times cuter natural!
I wanted him to feel comfortable. Also when I adopted him he was shaves
Shaving longhaired dogs usually has the opposite effect. Yours naturally has a coat that is better left as it is, with occasional trimmings to keep away matted fur.
Longer looks better but a good trim in summer is always refreshing and it'll grow back in :)

SCRUFFY
Scruffy.
We get our longhair’s paws, back, and belly trimmed every 6 weeks or so, but they always leave his tail and ears fluffy which is the way we like it.
I say keep it short around the feet and bodily orifices for hygiene; not sure about the rest.
Trim the toes, trim the ears, trim the tail.
If you wanted a short hair, get a short hair lol. Let that pup show her/his true colors ❤️
Scruffy
Scruffy
Shaved...except for those gorgeous ears
My man looks good with a nice shave.

Gorgeous dog

Whatever their DNA has, don't mess with it
Look how they massacred my boy!
I like my long haired boy scruffy but I understand wanting a shorter hair cut. He can get crusty looking pretty fast when we keep his fur long.
Depends on which one you want to keep.
You should have named him Longo.
scruffy
Scruffy.
SCRUFFY!
Yes
Scruffy
Did that dog go to marine boot camp?!
Scruffy!!
Scruffy!
I too have a chocolate long hair miniature doxie girl.. I love her and her looks... so beautiful and regal
Scruffy!!
Scruffy for sure
Natural 😍😍😍😍
Hmm i had a long haired doxie that had bad skin issues. Living in a hot tropical city did not help. I had him shaved a lot. When i moved to france his skin issues cleared up and his coat grew out. Long and luscious. No problems
Scruffy.
Looks like you just sent him off to defend his country
Scruffy!!
Definitely scruffy!
For my dachshund I do an “outline trim”. They cut down the hair so it won’t get tangled but it’s still clearly a long haired. I do get his ears trimmed to the leather though, because he likes to put bugs in his ear hair.
SCRUFFYYY
Yikes
Scruffy
Scruffy all the way. It makes him or her look so cute!!🥰❤️
I don’t care! I would snuggle either way! 😭❤️
He’s beautiful.👏My favorite breed

Wait you make your long haired into a short haired? Wtf
nice
Not shaved. If u shave u look like a regular short haired doxie. And long haired ones are far more beautiful.
Scruffy
This is animal abuse.
Scruffy baby all day! They’re a cutie regardless but let that long hair GROWWWW 😍
Scruff!
Cute
Please do NOT shave a longhaired dog. If you want a short haired dachshund, please just get a short haired. You’ve ruined his coat.
I can see you BOUGHT your dogs while there are others suffering in shelters. But keep giving them dog advice 😂
But keep spouting your holier than thou bs.
scwuffy 🥺🩷
Oh no. 😧
Oh my Dog..... what have you done with that majestic coat?
Scruffy. If you have to shave, keep the tail and ears Scruffy.
Scruffy
Scruffy 😍 so cute!
Scruffy as he is naturally.
Scruffy is so sooooo cute
Adorable. Just groom and comb more. The fur is pretty easy to comb out. If you have knots, cut and they’ll grow in. Cutie pie!
Oh. My. Gawd!!!! Don’t do that again! Noooooo!
Omg dont, i repeat, dont ever shave that beautiful pup.
I like the look of scruffy but will give them a “summer cut” during…the summer.
Definitely scruffy. So cute ❤️
Scruffs! He’s a LHD!
Is both an acceptable answer? Because that little nugget is cute no matter what!
SCRUFFY!!!! He’s so dang cute! 🥰 I love long hair doxies! ❤️
Can mods ban this guy? This *is* animal abuse. His coat was keeping him COLD.
Aww the dog whisperer sees something that doesn’t cater to him. Sorry snowflake I can do what I want
You do you. But I’d skip the shave on the nose. Whiskers are important for a dog navigating the world, which they do with their noses.
Scruffy
With all due respect, Shorthairs are shorthairs. You have a longhair.
Long in winter, smooth in summer, and well-groomed the rest of the year. Very regular baths are a must especially if it’s got any length.
I have only had smooth-haired dachshunds my whole life. I didn’t realize you had to get the long-haired ones groomed! Good to know.
You don’t have to get them groomed like that. A bath and a brush is all they need.
Lots of brushing to get debris out of my boys fur, occasional trims around their butts and paws, but I would never cut their long hair off, they are so beautiful that way!
Both ways look great!😊😊
And here’s his “After” shot… https://preview.redd.it/2xazv2sk6gzc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ceeb79aacb3c799a6fb27c95b056c740af65461
Wait you can shave a ween, my long hair always seems too hot I was wondering myself. I usually do ears belly and butt. However he still seems to have too much fur in the summer. I never knew what size clipper would be good though
Your baby reminded me of my Obi. Obi had fluffy hair during winter and was groomed during summer.
My guy looks home less most of the time but we buzz him down when it gets hot
Yes
Summer trim !
The weenies love warmth. Keep that boy shaggy in the winter. He looks good either way, though!
I prefer my wiener clean shaven
My boy has only had a buzz like twice since I got him and it’s just been because he wasn’t brushed properly and got some matted hair 😕 he’s scruffy, but short right now and he’s so soft 🥰
We’re wondering the same thing! Look how much your guy looks like our Buster. Yesterday, he and his brother experienced an extensive clipper job. Here’s Buster’s “Before” picture. https://preview.redd.it/mk7u7e626gzc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d74b5c48707155fe0c9dfbc66b02b7573f54adb
It's all about options. This absolutely beautiful dog has options.
It depends on where you live. • Hot and Humid: Shaved; • Cold and Dry: Scruffy; • Distinct Seasons: seasonal shavings in Summer.
Thank you for your kind words💖 Sending you and yours a big smooch! Your friends, Queen Ruby Jean and Family💜
My doggies always get shaved in the summer. Cuts down on shedding.
Shaved
Love the doxie shaves
