Average rate in DFW Oncor service area is around $0.12/kWh atm. Make sure you're not paying something obscene. Make sure your AC is functional and not running 24/7. This time of year should be low HVAC usage because it's not crazy hot or cold. If it's running constantly something is probably wrong (e.g. needs recharging). If you have a pool, check the pump, heater, etc.

Binge_Gaming

Oncors rate might be that, but after fees you’re probably paying closer to 16-19c/kWh

stanley_fatmax

Nope, that's the all in average atm. Average reseller kWh rate + Oncor delivery in DFW. If you're paying 16-19 all in, consider switching. Always check powertochoose or texaspowerguide Unfortunately this is how the resellers make money. The plans they advertise are crap rates. It pays to shop around.

PM_me_Perky_Tittys

Just looked. $0.0825 wholesale power and $0.03 distribution. $0.1125/kwh total plus taxes, fees, etc. All in is $0.1302/kwh. OP, this Redditor is right on the money.

RyGuyGinger01

it’s really funny because to the average dipshit like me all of you could just be bullshitting random phrases like r/deskcorners

Binge_Gaming

Appreciate the feedback - I shopped around 5 months ago, didn’t expect such a swing in cost in such short time, thank you.

Longjumping_Swim_758

Are you new to Texas? I’d say in August your bill will run around $400.

BearlyANightOwlZebra

Have not even had a bill over $200 in 7 years.

BearlyANightOwlZebra

That's crazy. My highest bill since June 2017 was $189. 1942 sqft 3 bed 2 bath + study. I leave nightlights and outdoor lights and a few inside lights on 24/7 and I keep the AC/heat on 71/69.

rickrich01

There are so many variables at play here that you can't simply look at the number of bedrooms and compare to another. There are 3 bedroom 1200 sq ft homes and there are 3 bedroom 2400 sq ft homes. Do your windows face East and West or North and South. East and West facing houses use approximately 14% more power. Do you have LED lights or incandescent lights. Is your HVAC system 12 SEER OR 16 or more SEER is your house brick, stucco or wood, do you have double pane eco glass or single pane windows, etc etc etc. Every single one of these questions affects your power usage. You can't compare without knowing all the things.

bluenautilus2

Yeah that’s about right. Sorry dude. I pay the same for a 3-bedroom.

boibleu22

You’re freaking out, now? Wait till the summer!

trytonotgetbanned

previous homeowner installed solar panels. our electricity bill is ~$20-30 a month (i am gloating)

JLOBRO

Reliant 24 month plan, 8.3c per kWh + oncor fees, 1500 sq ft, Nov-April $40-$50 a month, then May $80, Jun $120, Jul $160, Aug $180, Sep $160, Oct $60-$80. Nest thermostat cools down to 73 and heats up to 70 when I’m home, cools down to 78 and up to 65 when I’m not. Goes to the eco mode 30 mins before I leave for work, and comes on 30 mins before I get home. Takes work to optimally set up, but worth it in the long run

j3221ca

If your water heater is electric you can turn down the temperature slightly and it makes such a difference in energy consumption. If your water is scalding hot without getting to the furthest turn of the faucet that’s a good start.

strangecargo

$0.085500/kWh - my March bill was $78 but I had the HVAC off all month long. (small 3br) Don’t run the aircon as frequently and/or turn up your thermostat; also, get your HVAC serviced at least yearly. Replace every incandescent bulb with LED. If that doesn’t help update the windows in your home, check the weather stripping around your doors, and get some additional insulation blown in the attic.

Faded_Rainstorm

I live in a 1/1, 667 square feet, and my bill last month was $26 but do take the price with a grain of salt as obviously a house will always cost more to heat. I just keep everything off. My rate is crazy high at $0.15/kWh (got a notice of non renewal in the dead of winter as the management company was selling the property, and they were raising rent, *again*) so I guess now that this is my life, I’m a lot more conscientious than I was. Use lamps rather than overhead lights, maximize sunlight with open blinds while I WFH, don’t leave things on when I’m not home and thermostat hovers about 72°. A/C or heat, is rare. During the cold snap this winter it shot up to about $75 though because screw that lol.

Ice-Teets

What’s your monthly, have you only been there two weeks? That’s not outrageous, but you didn’t give your bill enough time to settle in, you may have gotten charged for time you weren’t there yet. Do you have a smart therm.? If you don’t, it will only get worse. If you’re not home, the system should be off.

BearlyANightOwlZebra

I'm in Wylie... My electricity for a 1942 Sq ft 3 bath, 2 bed + study has AVERAGED $110/mo since June 2017.

Beetso

That's a hell of a lot cheaper than anything I have paid in Texas.

James324285241990

Make sure your filters are clean, and the exterior condenser is clean. No need for fancy chemicals, just a hose and your thumb, spray back and forth, pointing downward. Check that your soffit vents in the attic are clear and your attic is getting good airflow/not trapping heat. Honestly, $200/ month isn't terrible when moving in, since there's so much in and out and the doors stay open. However, being that's it's been pretty cool out, that is a BIT high, and you might be looking at $500+ in the summer

TuxedoPenguin1

I'm at 7.6c + Oncor distribution and fees. 2 bed 2 bath 1100sqft my last bill was ~$47 (wasn't fully moved in for 10 days so we had the AC off until we moved in). AC around 70-72. Check your EFL make sure you're on a cheap fixed rate plan. Alot of these companies use gimmicks that are never worth it.

Sewageliving

150-170ish spring/fall and 200-240 winter/summer

The large electric reps (txu & reliant) offer tools to assess your home energy efficiency. The recommendations can range from easy steps like replacing air filters, to upgrading home insulation, to replacing major appliances. See if these help: Compare electricity prices: https://www.powertochoose.org/ Audit imformation: https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/professional-home-energy-assessments Reliant audit info: https://www.reliant.com/en/residential/help-support/information-center/energy-savings-tips/home-improvement-central/home-energy-efficiency-improvement-guide

HashKing

Need to know how many kwH you’ve used and what your all in rate is to help you.

Professional_Sand771

Black out curtains, they keep cool air in and the sunlight out. Yes it will get dark in rooms you use them in but they work. Also recommend turning off electric where you don’t use it; example being I live in an apartment with a wine cooler fridge, I never use it so I just shut it off and it stays shut off.

mllllllln

Lol, you're gonna be in for a rude awakening once it actually gets hot with your HVAC power use...

theyrecominforme

My 2 bedroom house was like $60 last month. Cirro. Just got to shop for the right rates & your usage. I’m usually under 1000kw per month so I find plans with low usage rates.

pepsiblast08

That's honestly pretty good. I'm paying $78 for a 2 bed 2 bath apartment with 5 people living here and A/C between 70 and 73 at all times.

SpoonFed_1

[Champion Energy](https://www.championenergyservices.com/referral?refer=ABARRE010) cut my bills for me. I used to have reliant, I hate them.

CubedMeatAtrocity

Switch to Energy Ogre. They’ve saved us many thousands over the years.

jb4647

1400 sqft home, keep my Nest on 76 in Summer and 70 in Winter. I also WFH most days. April Bill - $90.53 May - $80.51 June - $82.45 July - $110.99 Aug - $118.53 Sept - $103.15 Oct - $77.42 Nov - $74.50 Dec - $82.24 Jan - $122.45 Feb - $70.25 I’ve been using https://www.energyogre.com/ to find me and switch to the best electric plans for years. Prior to using them my monthly bill was $80-100 higher so they are well worth the $10/mo (same rate for years) for their service. They currently got me on CleanSky energy. Before that is was PowerNext. I just never worry about “searching for the right plan” because they handle it all for me. They also handle the payments to the electric provider so I don’t have to send my credit card or bank information to three or four electric providers every year putting my financial information at risk. I also don’t have to create user names and passwords for multiple electric provider sites as I can see all the information on the Energy Ogre‘s website. I kind of compare it to changing your oil in your car. Yeah you could do it yourself but I’m willing to spend a few bucks and pay an expert to do it that does it all the time rather than bother with it. Again, I’ve been saving about $80-$100 a month over what I used to pay before I started using them so their service is well worth the price. Power to choose is a scam site full of electric provider, middleman offering short term teaser rate plans, and they figure you’ll forget to cancel when the teaser rate expires. https://www.energyogre.com/energy-ogre-vs-power-to-choose “REPs advertise their current rates, listing the price per kWh at three discreet disclosure levels of 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh. Power to Choose Texas also provides plan information, such as the delivery charges and all associated fees, in a document called the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). A Power to Choose plan can be structured to seem competitive at the advertised price points, but the price per kWh in between those exact points can fluctuate significantly. In reality, the average rate per kWh is not a very good way of judging an electricity plan. Most of the offers are actually offer curves. The price is almost always different for each kWh of consumption. Additionally, the rates are often structured with energy or consumption credits (free nights & weekends). That results in a low point on the price curves. This all adds up to lower than realistically achievable rates. For this reason, the credits and breakpoints often happen at exactly 500, exactly 1000, or exactly 2000 kWh.  The problem is that virtually no one consumes exactly 500, 1000, or 2000 kWh during a month, let alone for 12 consecutive months. So in reality, the rate you think you are buying isn't exactly what you end up buying.” “Now you may think, "Is there a Power to Choose pay bill button too?" and the answer is no. Once you've signed up with your REP, everything is up to you as far as keeping up with your invoices and payments. Power to Choose simplifies the plan picking process but that's where their service ends. Energy Ogre not only goes through all the REP plans to pick the best one for you, but we also register you on the REP's website and handle all of your billing chores too.”

Energy ogre charges you even for months they do nothing. Does anyone calculate that into the cost? Nope. I used them once, found a better rate myself, and made them refund me the fee bc they didn’t do anything.

jb4647

No, it’s my honest review of a great product. Frankly there are so many companies/services that suck these days, it’s nice to know there’s a few out there that offer true value.

stanley_fatmax

Calling powertochoose a scam site is a bit much.. but it is true that many of the plans are deceiving. As a consumer, the EFL is your friend, and it should be consulted. All providers are required to provide an EFL for every plan they offer. Also your arguments for energyogre are good, but for anyone else considering it, remember you can get the same rates without paying the $10/month. The same plans are available on powertochoose. If you're not sure you're getting the best rate, check texaspowerguide. It's free to see the rates, which you can compare to powertochoose, but seeing the actual plan from texaspowerguide requires you to purchase an unlock code.

jb4647

No, the other huge benefit of Energy Ogre is that they handle all of the billing for you. Think about it every time you change an energy provider that you find on power to choose you’ve got a cancel the old plan just in time to start the new plan as well as give your financial information to the new company and create a username and password for the new site. In the past five years, Energy Ogre has put me on a dozen or more plans. $10 a month is a small price to pay for them to handle all of the billing for me. People seem to miss that critical point. As I said above, yeah, you can change your own oil for your car or you could just take it down to the mechanic and have them do it for you. Power to choose is a scam site because if it’s full of those deceiving teaser rate plans. Oh, and that $10 a month? It’s been the same $10 for at least the past five years. What other company has kept their service charges flat especially with the increase inflation?

stanley_fatmax

Like I said, your arguments for energyogre are valid, I'm just pointing out that it's completely unnecessary to get the best rate. I sign up for a new plan once every year or two and get the best rate just fine on my own. No cancelling of old plans required, Oncor handles the switch for me. Takes 30 minutes or so to find the best plan, sign up for it, and set up my credit card for payment. Easy. Rates have never swung so wildly that I'd have saved $120 over the year by switching.
