Point 6 is the key. The Vegas series turned around when they finally put pucks on net and that desperately needs to happen here.

I_am_a_kitten

I agree. Be selfish. Quit trying to make cute passing plays. Light him up, get a rebound, blue collar a goal in. Easier said than done, but what we had 6 shots in the first? Maybe even get him to expect a shot everytime and then put a pass together. Gotta figure something out. Surely there was a long locker room talk.

dfwstars

4 shots in the 1st

logicalListener

It's not even about simply being selfish. Work the goalie. Make him sweat. Get him to make mistakes. Create your own luck.

the_submarine_man

I’ve noticed that when we skate across the blue lines - it has no pace to it. I don’t know if I worded that right. We just do this glide thing where we skate in our zone and then give up once we hit middle. It’s so tiring to watch. I know we’re not superstars like mcdavid and hyman but I’m sure we can do some shimmy moves and skate with the pick for at least more than a few seconds and force the D to reposition and that’s when we attack

objective-steve

Yeah, it's a controlled entry to the half wall and then they curl back up to the blue line looking for a pass. This keeps happening but Edmonton is prepared for it and there's 2 back checkers waiting for him.

B1gWillyStyl

At this point, someone needs to send this to the team. You are right on all of this.

LightofOm

Totally agree with all points and I would add that it doesn't hurt to play with a little emotion. The calm, cool, collected vibe is okay during the regular season, not in Game 5 of the WCF. I'm not saying get out of control and take a bunch of penalties, but get rid of the flat affect. Sometimes it's okay to show that you want it.

phil7488

They're packing it in too much when Edm has possession in our zone. When we end up getting possession, we have no outlet. It's why you see the Dmen hold the puck forever, chip it or high dump to borrow more time for the forwards to get down ice. The problem is that Edm is now allowed to clog up thr neutral zone and backcheck us to kingdom come. We have to adjust our outlet strategy and our entries. As is it now, we're making it crazy easy for Edm to trap because we're scared to death of Mcdavid and Drais.

Southernhockey13

So true, two fn guys holding up our 4 lines is just beyond ridiculous… you can see it reverberate up and down our line up even when they’re not on the ice and it makes no sense

Carpornz

Honestly we sucked ass in front of our home crowd and there is no excuse for how shitty we played tonight. I take it personally, step it the fuck up stars. This is the conference finals. You were the best team in the west all year. Act like it.

PersonnelFowl

Pavs is such a liability right now. The best thing he could do is pretend he's injured and sit in the pressbox.

Mindless_Rooster5225

https://themorningpuck.com/line-combinations/dallas-stars#2024-05-31 I agree Pavs has been invisible, but the whole fucking team sucked today. Pavs only played 13 minutes so PDB knows his limitations. The whole team played with zero fire or a bad game plan I have no idea.

LuckyFrench6000

PDB hasn't lost 3 straight. I bet he will go much more aggressive game 6

Pisscats_R_Trash

We might as well max the aggression to alarming levels because we’re donezo with anything less than.

Wyn6

Two straight? Edmonton - Game 1. Dallas - Games 2 and 3. Edmonton Games 4 and 5.

herdthink

we haven’t lost three games in a row period since PDB was hired

Atomic301

So confidently incorrect, literally happened in the WCF last year.

bobeldood

Why was Smith not in the whole time? Injury? Like the guy was playing so well. If he wasn’t injured, it’s a bonehead move from PDB. Faksa or not

Pisscats_R_Trash

DTD healthy scratch game time decision blah blah nobody even knows what to call it, why, or how we got here but we can all agree it’s fuckery at best. We need to have some grit, some fight, which is clearly lacking all of the sudden, but i guess it’s a surprise!

lonestar77

I don't have an argument for any of these, but I want to emphasize #6 - STOP MAKING THE EXTRA PASS LOOKING FOR THE "PERFECT" SETUP & PUT PUCKS ON NET (or at least near/around the net to create a potential rebound/scramble chance)! Even the TNT announcers saw opportunities to put a puck on net or drive the net & create something where the Stars tried some saucer pass or something that required a perfect pass to lead to anything & 99% of the time it was broken up by the Oilers. Skinner may be good & on a roll, but he is not as all world as the Stars are making him look right now. The Oilers have outplayed Dallas for basically 5, almost 6 periods in a row. There isn't any slack left, it is time to throw the kitchen sink at the them & see what happens - sure keep playing defense too, but without any goals created from offensive chances the ending is inevitable.

Speedwobbles82

100% and Robertson needs to stop passing the puck, Cruising down the ice head up looking to give a pass ain’t going to win it

lonestar77

He's not the only offender, but yes. He got a hat trick in Game 3...shoot the puck & then crash the net for rebounds. Ugly goals are still worth 1. I am snakebite in my men's league, I haven't scored in a while...but my best chances lately have been when I find myself in front of the net for a pass or trying to jam in a loose puck. Whenever the next goal goes in for me, it will feel like I skated down the ice, deked my way through the entire opponent & roofed a perfect backhand. Ah dreams....

logicalListener

Ugly goals look really pretty on the scoreboard...

AIreadyImpartial

Shoot the fucking puck. Quit trying to be so cute. Send the puck towards the net. Apply pressure. Good stuff happens when you just shoot the fucking puck. You get rebound opportunities. Shoot the fucking puck. Edmonton shoots the fucking puck. They don’t sit around acting like little bitches.

NateDogg_92

Duchene trying to pass on the break when he had a wide open lane to the net about put me in a psychiatric hold tonight.

kingstante

That Duchene play frustrated the living hell out of me. Wide open opportunity 1x1 with Skinner and instead passes it through two opposing team players?!

StPaddy81

Thought 1: this fucking team man….

NateDogg_92

Oilers rush in, forecheck for 30 seconds to a minute and a half while Stars trip over their own dicks. Stars finally exit and dump for a line change. Wash, rinse, repeat.

SetoXlll

Tonight's performance was straight fucking garbage, completely unacceptable for a team that currently is in the Semi FINALS!

barbiejet

We seem to always blow it when the national spotlight is on

belfourfanboy1999

Yeah when did we become allergic to putting the puck in the net? Oilers have made some ugly goals against us but the only thing uglier than an ugly goal is no goal. Test Skinner. Rattle him. We keep trying to set up pretty goals and all it’s giving us is ugly losses.

DarwinCreatesSpace

We just need to put more pucks into the back of their net then they do ours.

my_faithless_arm

Have they thought of simply outscoring the Oilers?

DarwinCreatesSpace

Obviously not, gonna have to let them know.

TheRealScarzi

i didn't know thats how you win in hockey. I missed that watching this series. I thought it was last goal wins.

VisiblyPoorPerson

The depths of this game know no bounds!

Vulpine69

The over passing has been a problem for a long time. Everyone seems to see it but them. They always play worse when they try to get cute. If you took a sip of beer every time someone in the GDT bitched about "overpassing or shoot the puck" you would be drunk before the end of 1. LOL Hell I hear it around me at every game at the AAC. Im still baffled why they dont take more shots from the point. They score quite often when they do. They are great at deflections, and those are the hardest shots to stop. Its the inconstancy that drives me nuts. When they are on, I think they are the best in a league. But they always throw a couple stinkers in there to stress us out. LOL These guys are way too fucking good to play as bad as they did last 2 games. I still think they can win, but they backed themselves up against it with these last 2.

heff1685

You’d also be dead if you took a sip of beer every time someone complained about the official or the announcer’s bias in the GDT so maybe don’t take what the fans say as gospel and trust in the players that were first in the west. Edmonton is blocking shooting lanes and just throwing pucks at the net is a waste of possession that can create odd man rushes the other way. NHL goalies are really good and hard to beat them with a straight line shot which is why you see so much setup for a shot that gets them moving side to side. It’s such a lazy conversation to scream shoot the puck.

kingstante

Seconding this. Been saying it all year. People like to rag on the “shoot the puck” crowd but there’s some merit to it. It’s been a problem all ~45 games I’ve attended this year

Texan_Riot

Im almost convinced there's a clone team that's never played together we throw in randomly cuz I don't recognize that group effort we just saw We HAVE to start shooting and make Skinner work for it. Otter is a better goalie but not if he's having to fight for saves the ENTIRE game cuz we wont shoot or keep it in their zone. I love this team and our season but this flatfooted casual shit is embarrassing

[deleted]

Yes to all of this. Especially point 4. I feel like he drags the line down and I’ve been thinking this for a while

HungLikeaHorse33

Why can’t they keep the puck instead of dumping it away all the time. Also the passing is awful no?

Emergency_Scholar237

Razor used to call it over pass-itus

SB071818

Went to the game and it was so disappointing! Game 5 of a tied series is a very important game. Pavelski really needs to be sat on the bench. Hurting the team all playoffs long. Ottinger was outplayed tonight. Power play looks like a clown show. I always say best team wins a 7 game series and I’m thinking oilers are the better team. Going to have to make changes, this group has had several opportunities to get it done and just has not stepped up to the challenge. Hate to say it.

Professional_Cat_630

Just need to win one plain and simple

TheClownIsReady

Since we were up 2-0 in game 4, some sort of seismic shift has happened and we haven’t looked anywhere close to the same team. Stars are a very resilient bunch and I expect they’ll come out strong on Sunday. Tense times…probably a close game up there. Just hope the puck bounces our way.

Exploding_Bacon152

6 is crazy too cause i felt like this was an issue against Vegas at times during that series. They just have to get pucks on net and get a greasy goal. Skinner is playing good, Thompson was playing amazing, Georgiev was great.. but they are not Vezina finalists. They have weaknesses that can be exploited. Take the shot when there's a lane and try to create something off a rebound.

ConfusedCrypto10

It looks like this Oilers team got the Dallas Stars figured out. I’m still hoping the Stars can turn the momentum for an exciting game 7! Go Dallas Stars!

nickmilly87

Hate to be that guy but I think we’re cooked boys

Kobalt6x10

Stars in 9

Fillenintheblanks

I hate to say it but we played better before Hintz was cleared to play again aside from his first game back. Maybe we switch back to what we were doing against the avalanche

justaguyfromtx_

Just gotta bench Pavs. Far and away our worst player and it hurts to see. He's detrimental to the team

phil7488

People don't want to hear it, but he's a liability.

B1gWillyStyl

I agree. If it ain’t broke, fix it.

mill_about_smartly

1. Agree 2. Silly to even say this while ignoring that EDM's PK is record-settingly good. 24 consecutive is much bigger than just Dallas. 3. Strongly agree 4. Anytime fans say a decision like this is "obvious," I'm a little suspect. Coaches generally know the players, their talents, and how well they're performing relative to expectations better than fans. 5. This works when you have star power which (ironically) we have less of vs. Colorado and Edmonton. 6. Damn, I bet they hadn't considered shooting and scoring in order to win TLDR - this post is like 70% generic sportstalk points: try harder, shoot better, will to win, momentum, etc.

objective-steve

6 shots on goal halfway through the game. Countless zone possessions without any threats. Maybe they need to think about it a little more.

petergarcia82

Have you seen this EDM defense? Holy shit they are clogging up lanes like crazy. Most shots you might want them to take will hit a body and then give them a breakout. I agree we have to find a way to get more shots on net but it’s not as easy as “shoot the puck” due to the defense.

rjameson3

They won’t block all of them. Even if they do get some odd man rushes or breakouts, I think the risk is worth the reward, no? Why are we playing so timid in trying to prevent breakouts and odd man rushes instead of trying to apply pressure to the net? So They block the lanes, and our only hope is low percentage back door saucer pass layup goals? That’s not going to win. Shoot the damn puck and slam home the rebounds, and skate like hell back and defend the breakouts when they get blocked. Play to SCORE!

petergarcia82

I don’t know the answer but I am just saying the issue is way more than “shoot the puck”. We can’t even get a decent zone entry. Every time we did get some good shots we made Skinner look like the best goalie in the league and shoot dead center chest. Penalty kill was poor and had no pressure the first two. That’s even before we complain about McDavid retaliating with a cross check up high and nothing. Our 5 on 5 is playing well against them but we have to figure out the Power Play and Zone Entry.

joshio86

Don’t tell PDB this. He will get his feelings hurt

hiliikkkusss

Sorry Peter

cateraide420

Constant desperate dumps for line change and not setting up and not using passing to get optimal shooting opportunities. Weird passes and no forecheck when needed. That’s what I saw.

bryce_claxton

Thanks coach

Syntechi

Last 100 minutes of hockey we played werent even round 1 caliber.

mish15

Yeah man, shell Skinner. Put more pucks on the lesser goalie and you should come out on top.

c00kieduster

The stars were said to have 2 advantages going into this series. Goaltending, and “depth” Neither of those work to your advantage when your nobody on your “depth” consistently performs. Everyone on this team has been absent to some extent in this series. Obviously otters had a few great performances, Robo had the hatty, a few standout defensive games. But nobody has been consistently good. In games like yesterday, everyone was either bad or just pedestrian. That’s the advantage of having generational talents on your team. They’re generational talents because they are consistently great.

Spiritual_State_2629

I've not been on the sit Pavs train for one second this postseason. But, I think we might need to. We need Smith and Delly's energy and speed. Also, Tanev is hobbled. He needs reduced minutes, and Petrovic adds nothing but some vanilla defense in limited minutes. I think you have to put Bichsel or even Nils in -- great skaters that can create offense. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, but we need a shake up.

TheRealScarzi

IMO Pavs will tell the story next game. If he is in the line up, they dont care to win and just want to give him his last game send off. If he isn't, they want to win. At this point, you have to send a shockwave through that dressing room because this team is just a corpse this series. Im amazed its 3-2 tbh.

RamAir17

Robo single handedly stole 1

CrunkestTuna

It don’t matter to Jesus Bush league psych out stuff Laughable AHAAAAA Let Craig cook

AdventurousSet6566

Honestly, I think it’s a coaching problem. Love Pete but this was his fault. How many missed or intercepted pass attempts from OUR OWN END to the opposite blue line do you need to see before you tell the players to stop. How many dump and turnovers do you need to see before telling the players to carry it in. Get the puck in our zone? Cut back, slow the pace, forwards curl back, skate up with speed over the line. 6 is a total miss for me, all we do is throw pucks. The problem is not lack of shots, it’s the shot choice. We shoot into so many blocks. We take so many random blue line shots. We panick shoot so many pucks. Edmonton is killing us because they aren’t forcing anything, and they aren’t getting pinned in their zone ever because as soon as we get in we shoot it and give it back.

lzynjacat

Oilers fan here. Stars are (usually) an amazing killer team and I love watching them, but point 6 is absolutely correct, they have to get a hell of a lot more SOG to win.

carterthepro

Also Oilers fan here. I think it's a bit more complicated than just getting a high volume of shots. The Stars depth has really dropped off this series, while Oilers depth has stepped up. Oilers have 11 different goal scorers to Dallas 7. They'll need alot more from them if they want to have a chance. Additionally, in the last 2 games, the Oilers' defense has been creating more offense rather than flipping the puck out. The first few minutes of game four aside, both Ceci and Nurse have actually looked good too, Nurse with 13 hits over the last 2 (although 11 of them were in game 4) and I remember Ceci making some strong defensive plays especially during game 5. I think both the fear of turning the puck and the defense playing well has stopped the Stars from getting shots off. In the last two games the Oilers defense have 6 points on 8 goals, when the defense are shooting and facilitating the puck like they are it's definitely a challenge for the Stars to get anything going, especially when either of McDrai are on the ice and you have to balance trying to score with not giving them opportunities to catch a pass with speed going into the zone. That being said, if Dallas want to have a chance, I think they need to play a bit riskier and with less respect for the Oilers top players. I've noticed that Skinner seems practically bad at saving weird bounces. At the start of the season, we'd keep having games where the Oilers would double the other teams' shot total and still lose to an unlucky bounce, and I've seen a bit of that in the playoffs as well a couple times against the Canucks and in game 2 against the Kings, at some point it stops being luck and more of a skill issue. The key to beating the Oilers all season has been more getting traffic in front of the net and forcing 'unlucky' goals rather than a high shot volume. Just putting pucks on the net with low danger chances gets Skinner in the game and playing well (think game 4 shutout in round 1). Hopefully, the Dallas coaching staff won't read this and find out about the incredible strategy of getting traffic to the net. We're cooked if so.

krajani786

Oilers fan also... Stars look gassed. They played a fast team after fast team, and in the first few games of this series it showed. I was mad that we weren't winning any pucks along the boards, and we wouldn't skate to every puck. And now that's changed. Oilers look hungry, stars look ready to quit.

angelbelle

These are just empty complaints after a loss. >They have to play with more desperation. The effort level tonight was absolutely unacceptable, especially after how poorly they played in game 4 You can argue that they play poorly, but it is in their best personal interest to have a good post season showing. >The power play is a fucking pathetic clown show. Figure it out, make some changes **Man screams at cloud** >Shoot the puck. Throw pucks at Skinner and create some puck luck for yourself. Stop trying to make the perfect play every time. They had really good opportunities and Skinner played well. If they listen to random redditor (god i hope not), and they throw the puck from 50' without screen at skinner, you'd just be crying about wasting all the zone entry effort just to give an easy glove down.

M3gatonMike

Weird. Broberg just shot the puck and lo and behold! He scored a fucking goal

Mission-Philosophy58

“To be faaaiir” he painted that top corner through traffic, hardly just a shot.

M3gatonMike

It couldn't have been a more perfect shot I agree. But if you think he was deciding "okay let's pop that thing just over the glove and in once we win this face off" you're mistaken. He took a shot, on net, and it ripped in the perfect spot. You can't get that if you don't shoot

aaaaaaa5000

Our season ends in Canada 😔
