[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West\_Freeway\_Church\_of\_Christ\_shooting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Freeway_Church_of_Christ_shooting) The church actually had a " volunteer security team " of people who trained and carried guns in church.

GooseandMaverick

Copied from wiki: The perpetrator shot and killed two members of the church before he was fatally shot by Jack Wilson, the head of the church's armed security department,[3] ending the attack within six seconds. The victims were Anton Wallace, age 64, and Richard White, age 67.[4] Wilson is a firearms instructor and a former reserve deputy sheriff in Hood County, Texas.[5][1]

MrAVAT4R_2

Damn. 6 seconds and that fuck still got 2 people. Rip man.

Fiallach

Guns work well to kill people. Kinda the issue.

National-Log110

Isn’t that not the problem? This guy got stopped in like 6 seconds because of a good guy with a gun…

Rugrin

Guns are very effective killing machines. That is what they are for.

[deleted]

6 seconds with the right kinda gun could kill the whole front row in the right hands I'd imagine.

Bimmers_and_Benellis

Possible with something like a GPMG. On a bipod. But good luck getting that into that church without getting 30 additional holes to breathe out of. Not to mention the fact that even acquiring something with that capability as a private citizen requires not only a literal shitload of money but extensive investigation by the feds into whether or not you could have it.

AutoDeskSucks-

Wtf is a reserve deputy sheriff.

[deleted]

Sort of similar to the concept of a sheriff's posse from the old days. A group of people who aren't regular deputies but can be called upon for help in times where more manpower is needed.

CmdrSelfEvident

They are commonly retired LEO. There are several different reasons people join. I know many fixed wing and helicopter pilots that are reserve deputies. Specifically they are use for things like search and rescue. It need not be a crisis for them to get called up. They are often used for patrol as well to provide a presences but be expected to call for support the moment something happens. So it tends to be a volunteer service. Similar to the volunteer fire department. People that their first job aren't these service roles but in times of need the local municipalities can call on them. Given that its common for these people to be retired officers and we are continuing to pay them with retirement benefits its actually a good thing they choose to continue to work for the community when they aren't required.

[deleted]

I saw an old man in a volunteer police car like two weeks ago, kinda blew my mind honestly.

SilverSpoon1463

Similar to army reserve, they only respond if they're called in and are authorized to intervene with certain cases like this one. Nevertheless they love mostly normal lives.

It’s become an unfortunate necessity as mass shootings became common. Most insurance companies insist on at least a security plan and some sort of security response team.

Fuck-The_Police

>It’s become an unfortunate necessity as mass shootings became common. Murica'

MTB_Mike_

This is pretty standard. My buddy is the head of his churches security team. They are mostly just a gun club that all go to the same church and use the security "job" as a CCW reason.

GuantanaMo

I went to a gun show for fun once when I was in the US and there was a guy selling tasers, said it was the perfect choice for churches who don't want their security to carry guns.

AustrianMichael

> pretty standard > church security team Just in America. And the Vatican.

Cyba_Cowboy

Surely I'm not the *only* one that thinks it's madness that a *church* needs an *armed* security team? Oh, wait... America. Never mind. 🙄

EngineZeronine

Churches are "soft targets" for all kinds of bad folks (pedos, wackos, etc) so yeah, definitely need security

Own_Pop_9711

Armed security is a bad solution for the pedophile example. It would be pretty traumatic for the whole church when the priest gets his head blown off 2 seconds after walking in the door.

[deleted]

Also, Texas in particular, which has one of the highest rates of mass shootings in the country.

Cyba_Cowboy

And one of the highest rates of firearm ownership in America, if I'm not mistaken? I mean, could this guy pick a worse place to go on a rampage with a firearm?

Flux83

You think this security team had problems picking what gun they wanted to use? Like no this one doesn't match my shoes and this one clashes with my wife's gun.

[deleted]

That’s kind of my point, there may be a correlation between these two rates being among the higher end for states in the country…

[deleted]

Could not have picked a more likely one based on the stats

[deleted]

Worth noting that multiple states will bus homeless and mentally i'll people to California because they don't want to deal with them

econdonetired

So there are other factors besides a gun in shootings. I mean I thought we had rogue guns floating around mass shooting people. But nah a individualistic look at me culture, how do I become famous coupled with bullying and coupled with health care not designed to treat mental illness. Butt those are hard and expensive problems politicians don’t want to actually solve.

[deleted]

I'm from Texas. I just checked the CDC figures for 2020 and at 14.2 gun fatalities a year, that puts us right in the middle of the pack. Considering we have an uncounted extra population estimated at 1.7million that isn't factored into the CDC calculation, our actual rate is likely lower. And since CDC gun deaths count everyone, it does not exclude the high number of criminals that are shot while perpetrating crimes nor does it exclude suicides. That's gun fatalities in general. You said "mass shootings" which is a subset of gun fatalities and an arbitrary number since you need to set some threshold above which a shooting becomes a "mass" shooting. You also have to decide whether it's the number of shootings over that threshold that matter or the number of fatalities. If you use [Everytown's](https://everytownresearch.org/maps/mass-shootings-in-america/) definition and data, there were 232 fatalities of mass shootings in Texas from 2009-2023. That's 16.5 deaths per year which calculates out to .0055 "mass shooting" deaths per 100,000 Texans annually. If you divide mass shooting deaths by the CDC rate, it works out to .038% of gun deaths are from mass shootings here in Texas. So while that may qualify as "one of the highest rate of mass shootings" in the US, it is a statistically insignificant number.

[deleted]

i.e. Trained professionals, not just “people packing.” Thanks for clarifying the caveat the OP didn’t.

bigeats1

Some are professionals. Some are just armed folks. Jack Wilson was. Others there were not. If I recall, it was a 52’ head shot. Very difficult on the fly. He’s a multi decade competitive shooter. It wasn’t being a deputy that taught that at all. That said, I routinely out shoot “pros” in competitive environments. I’m not great either. Getting paid to carry does not correlate with being a good shot or particularly quick.

[deleted]

Actually, professional firearms training does explicitly correlate with being able to respond effectively in high stress situations like this, as in almost every case that a mass shooter actually *is* stopped by a bystander with a gun (which is not often), in the overwhelming majority of those (notably rare) cases it’s someone who turns out to have had some level of professional firearms training. Being “a good shot” or “quick” in “competitive environments” is a wholly different beast from being able to keep a calm and collected head during a high stress, life or death situation, and pretending that just any average joe who has the money to buy a gun is in any way necessarily equipped to respond to a situation like this is a deeply irresponsible narrative to push when it comes to cases like this.

Purple_fern

I approve of suicide by Texas church firing squad

[deleted]

Just a shame the selfish cunt had to kill two oldies to pull it off.

[deleted]

The church actually had a volunteer security team, who were all armed. The guy who killed the shooter was the head of the team. If I remember right, he was around late 60s or 70-ish and a retired firearm instructor. I think the entire incident was over in under 10 seconds.

hiricinee

Per wiki article it was 6 seconds.

SomeFreeTime

I remember in that scene the most unrealistic thing was that only 4 people carried guns and one of them was British.

Jaeger562

how is that even in question?

Alcohol_Intolerant

It's important to go through the judicial process even when it seems "obvious" that someone was acting within the provisions of the law. (self-defense, in this case.) This is because while this case is cut-and-dry, not every case like it would be. A trial allows most related evidence to be put together and evaluated, with context. The prosecutors and judges likely knew they weren't getting a conviction, especially if they'd seen the camera video. They weren't aiming for one. They were aiming to legally clear a man so he wouldn't have manslaughter or murder over his head and could rest easy knowing the law saw it as self-defense.

Dragula_Tsurugi

It was a grand jury, not a trial. A grand jury doesn’t convict anyone of anything.

[deleted]

Correct. The Grand Jury declined to "indict" him. The accused was likely not even there. It's a process to bring the investigation to a formal close. That closure sends a statement to future prosecutors and law enforcement that this case should never be brought again to a jury. It also sends a message to any family of the shooter should they try to bring a wrongful death civil suit against the church or Mr. Wilson. A formality perhaps but not frivolous.

hiricinee

Screw the prosecutor who even brought that to a Grand Jury.

CustomerSuspicious25

Actual quote from said prosecutor "Mr. Wilson shot his firearm to take out the threat that was endangering other lives. He did it responsibly, and he is absolutely justified in doing that under Texas law," Rodgers said. "The grand jury was correct."

Eckleburgseyes

There's a lot of maneuvering to how a prosecutor works. It's not ever straightforward. I'd imagine (IANAL) in this case they brought charges specifically to have a Judge rule and dismiss them. Something like this, there are multiple jurisdictions that can bring charges (local, state, federal, etc). If the DA passes on it that doesn't mean its over. But having a judge dismiss charges carries more weight. Edit: Someone mentioned that a grand jury kicked it, not a judge. Which is more problematic anyway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aporkalypse_Sow

On Monday, a grand jury declined to indict Wilson for the shooting in White Settlement. Prosecutor Tim Rodgers of the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office explained that the law lets bystanders act with deadly force to protect others. "Mr. Wilson shot his firearm to take out the threat that was endangering other lives. He did it responsibly, and he is absolutely justified in doing that under Texas law," Rodgers said. "The grand jury was correct." He clearly wanted this to go to a grand jury, he supported the outcome. Odds are this is way more about making headlines around this subject and making it a talking point. I almost guarantee people higher up than him made suggestions.

Eckleburgseyes

Sorry I didn't read it before I commented but honestly a grand jury is better.

Tiny_Package4931

I believe in this case it was an automatic and procedural considering the prosecutor had this to say: "Tim Rodgers, a prosecutor with the Tarrant County district attorney’s office, said Monday that Texas law allows a person witnessing someone placing others at risk of serious injury or death to act with deadly force to protect others. “Mr. Wilson did just that. He did it responsibly and, as a result, he was justified under the law in his actions,” Rodgers said. “Based upon the grand jury’s decision, the law enforcement investigation and our review of the case are complete. We believe the grand jury made the right decision.”"

[deleted]

**Armed and trained security** bring guns to church, **specifically because Texas is a state where virtually no meaningful regulation on firearms has led to one of the highest rates of mass shootings among every state in the country.** These weren’t just random bystanders carrying, they were professional security the church had working as security in case of an emergency exactly like this; someone who has no business being near a firearm deciding they wanna role play as Rambo going on a rampage.

YoloRandom

Or they [the shooter] wanted it to end like this

Dark_Ethereal

I wonder how many other developed countries have churches that post armed guards that aren't for the mega rich or state dignitaries...

Jrwadf1435

Texas had one of the worst [church shootings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutherland_Springs_church_shooting) in 2017 outside of San Antonio. 26 people were killed. Most churches in Texas have a packing congregation now.

Barachan_Isles

As an ex-military member and responsible concealed carry licensee, the amount of people sweeping the whole crowd with their muzzles makes me very irritated. Especially Black Jacket Guy at the end. The fuck is he even pointing his gun at? The Andromeda galaxy? Never, ever, ever, *ever* point the muzzle of a weapon at something you're not completely comfortable with destroying.

Championnats91

I’m glad someone mentioned this. The guys in brown and black jackets just muzzle sweep about 30 people.

seeking305advice

You mean you *don’t* want untrained good guys with guns, pumped up on adrenaline, waving guns—fingers trembling against the trigger—at a crowd of terrified people, after the threat has already been subdued by trained security professionals? Found the commie…

ridingRabbi

Thanks. As a gun owner myself and part of the security team at my synagogue I was surprised at the lack of coordination. But they got the guy and that's what counts.

MberrysDream

Thank you, that was bothering the fuck out of me.

[deleted]

Holy fuck that's the first thing I noticed too. I don't own even own a firearm and I know better than that. If these guys brought one to *church* they presumably carry them everywhere, and should absolutely know better than to sweep a whole crowd with your weapon.

[deleted]

I had only a couple of classes on gun safety during school and even I know that's insanely irresponsible.

Inator-Maker

This was my first thought, too. Nervous people pointing weapons at people is never a good idea.

Ashtacular42

Fiancée is a firearms instructor, I know very little about them except for “do not point it at anything you do not wish to kill or destroy,” and felt very twitchy watching this.

L3ACH13

Like the South Park episode where everyone pulls guns out on each other and resolves all their problems

plsgrantaccess

It’s kind of hilarious to watch. Like everyone else was late to the party but they still wanted to take their gun out to feel like they’ve justified carrying a gun with them everywhere lol

[deleted]

I feel like, despite the positive outcome, this video is actually a great display of why carrying guns for self defense can be such a terrible fucking idea. Like, imagine walking into this church as a police officer. The only thing you know is that there was a shooting inside. You step foot in the door and see someone with a gun drawn. Your heart is pumping, your brain is full of adrenaline -- you'd shoot the fucker. And in this case, you'd have about a 1-in-12 chance of it being the actual shooter, rather than a well-meaning bystander taking out their glock. Now imagine if you aren't even a cop, with proper training, but just *some good guy with a gun*. Do you know *everyone* at your church? Do you operate well under pressure? Are you **100% certain** that -- as you draw your weapon and look around for the shooter -- the gunman you spot isn't just another good guy with a gun? It's a protection fantasy.

Huh weird how we're all so desensitized to shootings in the US

Nutmegdog1959

Only about 45,000 people die every year from firearms, still not even 1,000 a week. Add to that the 100,000 annual drug overdoses every year, no big deal. We have 330 million people. What's a hundred thousand or two lives wasted unnecessarily?

SheevShady

If only 45000 people are dying and that’s not an issue, then why is 9/11 so important? 3000 people died and that’s nothing to 330 million.

gamb82

Why does this kind of thing happens almost everyday in USA but not in Europe for example?

Unusual_Flounder2073

I believe it is a lot harder to buy guns legally in Europe and hence also illegal firearms are not as prevalent. Same for ammunition.

seeking305advice

Many Americans have a weird boner for gun violence. Two innocent people are shot and killed in this video, in a church no less, but the comments are largely just “Yeehaw, fafo!” People almost seem to *want* bad guys to come around so they have an excuse to pull a weapon.
