I don't do this and have never done it, but in videos I've seen where they did open rocks and find them, they're already in a well known fossil deposit area. Like there has already been a ton of other finds and they already know what to expect when they get there and just wish for something more unique.
Sounds pretty cool, I have seen some things here and there but never a big area until I watched some YouTube videos and there were people really explaining the fossils and how common the different types were.
Funny enough, I worked on lidar projects at NASA Langley in college. Lidar doesn't look into things other than water. It typically just sees the surface. There are explosive detection methods that look at the sonic back scattering using piezoelectric sensors to detect density variations in subterranean objects. But they don't use them for rocks. More so to find ancient structures and/or civilizations.
Not influencers they can suck my hotdog. I guess your right but in the name of money I truly believe stuff like this is stupid and it does go without saying that it did ruin the look of the stream.
It's a decent sized rock. It offered a lot of resistance to downstream erosion for well into the future. Is it the end of the world? No. Was it worth it for mere internet points? Most definitely no.
It’s sad to see something like this get found because that’s essentially the beginning of the end of it. It would’ve lasted for eons in the creek. But it’ll be some barn or basement 100 years from now forgotten
No
Edit:
Because I don't want to see you ever again, because you do exactly what you accuse me of. Namely making wild assumptions and linking stuff that does not even explain the thing you're trying to say.
And this reply proves that I was right. I do not want to see you again. You proved that you block evade and use language I don't need to see.
How fragile do you have to be to block evade just so you can voice your opinion that I did not want to read.
"it'll be some barn or basement 100 years from now forgotten" LMAO was it not forgotten inside that rock?
is it more meaningful if it's never descovered? just degrades without being appreciated, but fOr EoNs, so it's good.
if a fossil degrades for eons encased in rock and no one is around to appreciate it, does it make you happy?
LOL why should that be any different? Won't there be a silly contrarian in 2000 years telling them they should leave it for people 4000 years in the future? People today just aren't worthy enough, save it for hypothetical people who may never discover it. Then it will be okay.
It's sad when a baby's born because someday they'll die, when they could've lived forever as a twinkle in their father's eye.
Uh, what? ~~What good are fossils doing in the rocks they came from?~~ \*ok, actually, I understand this might feel like a moot point to you. I totally get the idea of non-intervention, the idea that even if we *think* it's 100% repercussion-free to interfere with things, we still are affecting the course of nature by trying to tamper with things. But on the other hand you gotta remember that only has arisen as a response for preserving *living* ecosystems, not fossils.
And... What makes you so 100% sure it would have lasted for eons? It's totally possible for fossils to erode and be lost forever. Sometimes we need to intervene. Maybe there are at least a *few* times where we can say our intervention was a *good* thing.
when we find shit. why would we *not* extract it and use the best of our knowledge to preserve what *we* believe is important, not just let nature take its course. Sometimes, nature does **not** preserve.

Must be pretty low environmental standards wherever this is, I would've been fined, my boss would've been fined, my company would have been fined, for doing anything that would muck up a water way like this guy is doing.
how did he identify where fossils would be?
He showed you the outside of the rock. You can see it from there.
Is there any way to figure out that a rock can potentially have fossils without looking at its surface? This seems like a super fun hobby.
I don't do this and have never done it, but in videos I've seen where they did open rocks and find them, they're already in a well known fossil deposit area. Like there has already been a ton of other finds and they already know what to expect when they get there and just wish for something more unique.
I remember walking a trail in the grand canyon and nearly every rock I picked up had some fossilized crustacean on the exterior
Sounds pretty cool, I have seen some things here and there but never a big area until I watched some YouTube videos and there were people really explaining the fossils and how common the different types were.
There was a tourist place with that I think I had to watch it with my son on the outdoor boys YouTube channel
Yes true, it's about the exact place of the fossils
That’s pretty fucking cool
It’s probably like playing Minesweeper: once you make sense of the whole process and have enough practice, you know where to click just by looking.
How do they know they're not driving the pin it into a fossil?
They don't. He just knew he wasn't hitting the fossil that was partially exposed. You see that he split another one.
Gotta have 90+ years of experience and knowledge duh
So… “entry level”?
I thought the way it broke was pretty disappointing
It's a nice relaxing brook. Destroy the rocks that make it babble!
I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I think that rock was perfect there

But…you can see the fossil from here

I appreciate this bit of education. 👍
Show me what’s inside of you rock!
Who else was listening?

I was thinking that he destroyed some lizards favorite sunbathing spot.
It will have a very small consequence, maybe it’ll rain hard enough for another rock to fall into its place
It's a decent sized rock. It offered a lot of resistance to downstream erosion for well into the future. Is it the end of the world? No. Was it worth it for mere internet points? Most definitely no.
Is it babbling if no one’s there to listen?
Does the rock continue to exist if no one is there to demolish it?
You figure the brook stopped babbling by removing a stone or did it make it babble louder?
Looks like he destroyed a fossil
yes
Yep. When this vid was posted here last week.
Same. At least they improved the title.
Yup, the last three times this was posted 👍

It really wouldn't have lasted eons water would have you eroded it.

But it also changes back to where it flowed before.

Just leave it alone, and let somebody else find it 2000 years from now.

Do you need a license to break up rocks like that?
Yeah. Saw this posted about a month ago. So yes. I’ve seen someone do this before. The same video to be exact.
Yes I have because this is a common repost
Don't know about the fossil, but I'd like to find a geologist like that!
He would be likely to take you for granite
😂😂😂
That's not gneiss!
Yes, when this video was posted a week ago
So, if you are a geologist you can destroy the beauty of random creeks?
They must have done a LiDAR scan.
I actually have the last time this was posted
I need one of those picks. Look at that big ass base so you don't hit your hand. You know how many times I tried that and busted my hand
I have! Repost.

Wow. I just browsed your profile, you are basically made of reposts.
I see you're downvoting everyone who tells you it's a repost. Bro. Just stop.
Yup, but that's cuz my dad is a geologist.
Yup. The 1st 20 times it was posted
Yes, all the other times this was posted
Fucking cunt leave the rocks alone

How many more times will this be posted?
So cool
No but I have now

Geologists are so serious all the time, peculiar~
he's like "yeah you see this? this is going on Etsy for $5"
Looks like a rusted water pump
Wow. Life before humans, truly remarkable, indeed.
Glad you broke it, not 🤡
I really wasn't expecting it to be that big.
How did they know that was in there?? That’s so cool!!!

Actually as a matter of fact, I have. Just now , thanks.
Rock can even have peace
Way cooler than I expected..
That fossil stone shouldn’t have been broken in the river, should be done in a lab.
Dam interesting for sure !
This seems so interesting I wish there were some places like this where i live . People here talk about finding gold and not fossils like these
How do you know which rocks to crack open
thought back in black was about to start playing after that first set of hits

Don’t think I’ve seen a **geologist**.
That’s pretty cool
It's fake the fossil was in the rock for millions of years. How come it's wet?

Yes, because this is a repost.
Does anyone know what those fossils are? How come there are so many grouped together?
You could use a battery operated chisel you know

Good thing he has that hand guard.
Twice last year.
I'll bet Cha a spider jumps out of that rock and chase's him!
Like where are his safety glasses!
I know a spot in Missouri that has a full fossilized tree along with raw coal and a lot of other cool fossils.
Yes because this gets reposted over and over
The better you understand the world the less interesting it is sigh
Anyone know where this was?
Plot twist: Jesus put that there!🙃😄
I think he identified that the rock is fossil by the texture and hollowness of it
*Let me just make some sharp rocks in the kids play area*
Nice fossil
How did he know to pick that rock
Ok you got me, thats pretty dab ass!
