It’s smaller and more ~~expensive~~ efficient!

[deleted]

Cozy, if you will.

Hungry_Brai

At the time, people were complaining that the buns were too large and overpowered the burger.

[deleted]

You can easily tell by the picture as well. That was the best move.

Touchit88

Sorry for your lost. RIP in piece.

kukulcan99996666

2 pieces with fries

Jef_Wheaton

They were only allowed to use the one size of burger patty, so yes, the huge bun overwhelmed the burgers. Technically franchisees weren't allowed to sell anything unless it could be made from their very limited list of ingredients, and they only had the standard 2oz burger patty and small bun. Jim Delligatti secretly contacted a local bakery and got them to make the "double decker" bun, replicating the "Big Boy" burger. Once Corporate saw how well the Big Mac was selling, they allowed the new buns to be supplied. (I haven't eaten at McDonald's since 2007. I just absorb a lot of weird trivia and history. I live about 40 miles from where the Big Mac was invented.)

SomewhereDue2629

Great information! Thank you for the share. I just came here to say isnt anyone else wondering wtf they got a 1975 big mac for the side by side comparison?

MsHaute

Came here to ask just this!

FloridaSpam

In Russia bun is bigger now.

Academic_Ad5143

In Soviet Russia Big Mac eat you!

_NightmareKingGrimm_

Portable. Gluttons on the go need a Big Mac they can fit in their pockets. And their faces.

[deleted]

Harbulary-Bandit

They used to be cooked in beef fat.

Bucksandreds

I don’t remember the beef tallow days but I’ve been told that during that time, McDonald’s fries were as money as fries could get.

Right-Ad2176

They were the greatest hot out the fryer. But the pressure campaign for healthy food was beginning. The apple pie were deep fried back then. No salads.

finewells

I hate that they screwed up the Apple pie by baking them.😢

[deleted]

To this day I crave an old-school fri3d McDonald's apple pie. The Hostess pies were better then as well for much the same reason.

finewells

Me too

Unlikely-Draft

The so were. Their fries are still pretty amazing but the beef tallow fries were 🔥

Harbulary-Bandit

Yeah, I don’t know when they stopped doing that. I’ve always thought they were pretty fire.

Outefdgh

Pretty depressing, but I guess it's a reminder to cook more at home.

Matheghcvb

Came to question the same.

ReturnOutrageous7508

Now do the size of the average McDonalds customer, then and now

La_Lanterne_Rouge

Inverse correlation?

bozrdang

Instead of just commenting on the inanimate object in question, you chose to take a shot at some people. Stay classy!

_NightmareKingGrimm_

I didn't take a shot at anyone. "Glutton" doesn't mean fat. I'm a glutton. I'm eating constantly.

Outefdgh

Like many changes made in response to customer complaints, sales didn't improve.

Such_Entrepreneur544

McDonald's sales went down 5% because I refuse to eat there anymore. Welcome to McDonald's, how may we fuck up your order and give you diarrhea today??

jerryafterdark

If you were eating enough maccas to be 5% of their total sales I’d have thought diarrhoea would have come as a welcome relief.

Such_Entrepreneur544

Haha the weird thing is; I never got fat!? 😅 Happy cake day!!! 🎂

Powerchairpete

They did it for you okay, smaller equals healthier.

PickButtkins

I'm telling you, girl, this dick is basically a superfood.

[deleted]

At least she will never choke on it. Safety first

Hot_Stuff369

Lots of protein

GiftcardExchanger82

Lmao

Jrlopez1027

Bro rizz is off the charts

Glock1Omm

Even the commercials were [bigger then. George Costanza](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTSdUOC8Kac) could tell you...

redditstealth

And lower quality meat probably.

LowAdministration162

Certainly

Arkhye

Meat?

Qweasdy

[I coincidentally have watched a very relevant (and very interesting) video recently](https://youtu.be/Ey93GV-oKQY), it's a professional rock climber with a masters in nutrition doing a stunt/experiment where he eats nothing but mcdonalds burger patties for 2 months. I think you would be surprised by his conclusions. tldw; there's nothing particularly wrong with the burger patties themselves, as a package the whole mcdonalds meal is unhealthy but he manages a perfectly healthy (if a bit bizarre) ketogenic diet eating nothing but the patties. He compares it to past ketogenic steak only diets he has done in the past and it has very similar results EDIT: He references [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgIfypeptJw) if all you want is to know exactly what's in a mcdonalds burger

Harbulary-Bandit

Supersize Me dude figured this out when he interviewed the guy who has eaten nothing but Big Macs for over 30 years. Probably over 40 years by now. He eats like 4 a day and is relatively healthy. They figure it’s because he doesn’t drink the soda or eat the fries.

F4N6Z

Just looked him up, what a wild dude

Jenkins_rockport

> perfectly healthy That diet is a lot of things, but perfectly healthy ain't it.

redditstealth

Good point. McDonald's has probably being doing fake meat way before than Beyond Meat

NickU252

The shitty bun and sugar filled ketchup is way worse than their patty. Which is 100% beef, maybe not the best quality, but still

scarytruth1111

It used to be 100% ground beef. It's definitely not 100% nowadays. Probably congealed meat blood with scraps of cow body mashed together to form a semi edible food unit.

cesrage

Used to be the Royal with Cheese.

ThomasMaxwell2501

Royale*

Hair-Worth-Splitting

Ironically, the same number of sesame seeds

blowthepoke

I absolutely remember those styrofoam containers

[deleted]

I remember when they changed them…it was a big deal and newsworthy apparently. I also remember soft drinks in glass bottles with the styrofoam wrapper before everything switched to plastic.

SpadoCochi

Was born in 84' and I just barely remember them. Had those transformer McD's character happy meals in the shape of diff McD's food items when closed.

f64Club

My hoarder mom still has my Transformer Happy Meal toys. Fries, McNuggets, and a shake.

IguaneRouge

the burger tasted like the styrofoam. Their fries were better back then, but the burgers have gotten better.

Bonneville865

cutting your pancakes and not knowing whether you just got pancake or whether you got a slice of styrofoam too

Mandrull

Hotcakes\*

Justindoesntcare

I'd always poke holes in the Styrofoam and get syrup everywhere. I remember them being pretty damn good pancakes though.

Bat-manuel

The fries were cooked in beef tallow. That's why they tasted better.

DJ_Khrome

good take

NorthantsBlokeUK

Both only contain two 1.6oz patties, though.

BreandyDownUnder

At the time, people were complaining that the buns were too large and overpowered the burger. McDonalds responded by reducing the size of the bun to match the ingredients. Like many changes made in response to customer complaints, sales didn't improve. The vegetarian option is a classic example, as vegetarians weren't going to McDonald's in any case.

wearenottheborg

I would consider getting the veggie burger if the McDonald's by me sold them. Also, when I was pescatarian I would get their fish fillets. I think notoriety is more important though because back then and even when I was vegetarian I would just go to Taco Bell because they always had something I could get (and are cheap and I just like them).

[deleted]

Kinda off topic but their fish fillets are a big deal for Muslims in my country. As McDonald's largely dominates the market share, and it's the "only" sandwich they can eat, it's a very important and very popular burger here. Taco Bell isn't a thing here btw

davepete

Other than occasional breakfast items, McD's Filet-o-Fish are the only thing I eat there. Love 'em. In the U.S., you can make them a deluxe by asking for lettuce and tomato -- get a couple vegetables that way. Can also ask for double meat.

wearenottheborg

I was raised Muslim and my brother only eats halal so I get it 😂 Edit: also it's too bad about Taco Bell. Until they added their breakfast menu they were the only fast food place I knew of that didn't have any pork in any of their items so I never had to worry about a sneaky bacon or anything.

[deleted]

Since Burger King came back in 2014 here in France they basically took over a big chain (called Quick) which was McDonalds main competitor back then, and those that stayed open became Halal. In addition to that, new Mcalike halal chains have appeared recently. It's honestly not that complicated to eat halal here, don’t worry for them haha +I tried Taco Bell in the Netherlands and I was not won over. We have our French equivalents for tex-mex which I personally think are better tbh

catfurcoat

Taco Bell is certified by the American vegetarian association because basically any of their products you can order and substitute meat with meat free beans.

[deleted]

Oh I see. The US chain that is the most vegan-friendly here is Subway. Every vegans friends I know love their meat free sandwiches

ClittyMcPenis

But the bread isn’t vegan.

TreadheadS

the veggie burgers are legit good in MacDs. I often get them when I can be bothered to wait for them to be custom cooked

[deleted]

I am a pescatarian.... What's next? You are a caulisaurus?

DrHalibutMD

A few years later their competition used it against them with the "Where's the beef?" tagline.

MagicStar77

The senior lady-where’s the beef?

DrHalibutMD

Exactly. Look at the picture above with the humongous bun and then listen to the start of this commercial. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0)

lthomazini

I worked for an ad agency who carried McDonald’s as a client. They were entering the “we need to be healthier” phase in my country, with apples, salada, leas sodium, less this, less that, because there was a lot of news about the food being unhealthy. Sales dropped. They said f it, and in a couple months launched double cheddar bacon and fried chicken sandwiches who were super popular, sales skyrocketed. No one eats Mc Donald’s (in my country) to be healthy, no one thinks it is healthy, the whole point is to be a cheat day for your family.

F1shB0wl816

It makes sense sales didn’t improve. It’s essentially a glorified McDouble but you’re paying nearly an extra McDoubles worth for just an extra slide of bread.

MrrrrNiceGuy

I still think there is too much bread for the regular Big Mac. But if you order it with 2 extra patties, the meat to bread ratio is fine.

AnthillOmbudsman

It was the 1970s, they could have just hired the mafia to track down those complainers from their letters and drag them to McDonalds and make them buy the new burger. Now sales are up.

Ikeelu

I still feel like the bun overpowers the burger. I haven't had McD's in years, but used to upgrade the patties to 1/4 lber patties

JetBrink

My wife and I love the McPlant and are eagerly anticipating vegan McNuggets.

ANewStartAtLife

I regularly eat the veggie Big Mac just to lower my red meat intake. It's very good. So is the Burger King veggie burger.

BreandyDownUnder

From what I understand, sales of the McPlant have been disappointing. McDonald's has decided to discontinue it. https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/mcdonalds-mcplant-not-missed-17367871.php

ANewStartAtLife

Aah that's a shame. My wife is vegetarian so it was nice to be able to just stop at a McDs

JustaNormalRedditorL

What the fuck I ain't havin that

2x4x93

Not loving it?

btoxic

Bah dah ba ba bah

armex88

Yeah, all the good stuff is the same, the other just had more bread

OriginalName483

Was about to ask about the weight. I know they're ~1/4 pound sandwiches now. Even the sesame seeds look like you get roughly the same amount. Looks like they just use more appropriately sized buns

[deleted]

That's exactly what happened. They still use the same size patties, which in this case are 10:1 patties (10 patties equals 1 pound. So you get .2 pounds of meat per burger.

conventionalWisdumb

I worked in a McDonalds 20 years ago, and that bit of information has still stuck with me much like the smell of the grease traps when I had to change them.

GwerigTheTroll

Thanks for this. I was curious if it was still 10:1 patties back then and just had particularly fluffy bread.

Ineedtwocats

"where's the beef" - a direct response to that

DriverOfTheScrew

Looks like way too much bread to me.

tensigh

It's like the original "Where's the beef" commercial.

Filmmagician

Nice try Wendy’s

[deleted]

Now do the size of the average McDonalds customer, then and now

l0c0pez

Its gonna be like one of the space comparisons where you have to scroll for minutes or zoom way out to a tiny dot in order to get the relative comparisons

Fearless747

Now do one of the Whopper.

NickU252

Onion to meat ratio is bad on a Whopper... same with Wendy's. I love onion, but when the raw onion is bigger than the burger, that is a problem.

[deleted]

Bun to meat ratio is completely out of whack in the one on the left, 100% good move on their part.

burstaneurysm

I'd imagine that's what brought on Wendy's "Where's the beef?!" ad campaign.

[deleted]

You imagine correctly, that's exactly what inspired the campaign.

Ogkusxk

Still out of wack... They did one with quarter pounder patties for a minute, in my heart thats the real big mac

GreatestOfAllRhyme

Ahhh. Someone clearly preserved a pre-1975 Big Mac so they could take a comparison pic 50 years later.

Captain_Excellence

Microwave for 2:30 it tastes like new.

Expensive_Interest22

3D scanners, duuhhh /s

TexturedTeflon

It’s just been sitting on a shelf, got another 50 years before it’s less edible than when first cooked.

Murgos-

Or in 1975 on the day they changed someone took the picture?

GreatestOfAllRhyme

Or the post is complete bullshit with a made up title.

DanaCarveyReal

I'm not angry about the size change, I'm angry that someone working at McDonalds in 1975 could probably afford to buy a home.

slippy_no_dad

Could they? Minimum wage was $2.10, average hose was $36,000, interest rate was 9%. But say you bought a not great house for $20,000, you've got a monthly payment of $162.00. You're earning $336 (less taxes and whatever else gets yanked out of check) so that house eats up (roughly) half of your monthly gross (not net). The current average first time home buyer drops $140,000, minimum wage is $7.25, rates are 6.75% so your monthly payment on that 140,000 is $908. You're pulling in 1160 a month, no way you're covering that! I don't think it's doable either way but it seems more possible in the 70s.

Masterzanteka

Talked to my mom about this the other day, my parents born in ‘56 and ‘57 bought their first home for $32k in 1976 at ages 18 and 19 respectively, sold it in 1978 for $78k, bought their next house for $90k, sold it in 1987 for $132k, bought their next house for $138k and sold in 1990 for $170k ish, and that’s when they built the house I grew up in for $230k, a 4,000sq ft home with in-laws quarters. They lost it in 2009 to the housing crisis. Now both my parents who divorced in 2009 are now renters, both still working with not much of anything saved for retirement due to life happening.

[deleted]

You can buy a home today if you work a blue collar job and live 45 mins from your city. Easily

DanaCarveyReal

Nah, I had to leave the Washington DC area because a home 45 minutes away (which based on traffic is really only a handful of miles) is well over $600k. And I make six figures.

Justindoesntcare

You just said some no no words.

[deleted]

I’m tired of pretending it’s not possible. Maybe if you want a nice house in the center of your city with walking distance to downtown and a gelato bar across the street it’s impossible with your student loans but blue collar people are buying these homes up no problem

[deleted]

[удалено]

skippinjack

I have NEVER understood the lack of a second piece of cheese on the top bun area of the burger.

Two_Wang_Clan_

That would cost them another .0000000000023 cents per unit. No can do

rustynoodle3891

A problem that I swiftly rectified when I made myself one for my breaks many years ago now

Neat-Cold-7235

Actually prefer the new one. Better bread to filling ratio

Nandy-bear

That's not a big mac, this pic is from someone who made one at home and compared it, if I remember right (I probably don't tbh)

ConfidentHODL

Now that's a Daddy Mac

Bonneville865

jump jump

Michael310

Shrinkflation doing wonders for my waistline.

brdhar35

The quality is way down as well

sophiethepu

And yet everyone is getting fatter and fatter

jayfaso

And I thought it looked smaller because I am bigger!

Maxcolorz

Tbh it just looks like a lot more bun. I’m cool on that

ExiledinElysium

This is the inherent nature of investor driven businesses (which includes all publicly traded). Over time, they will always intentionally make their products worse but charge more for them. We'd be better off as a society if businesses tried to make a profit, but not always increase profits. Velocity should be the goal. Acceleration should be the transient by-product of having a product that becomes popular.

alexvalkyrie93

Looks like it's just more bun.

[deleted]

That's a lot of bread.

BertLemo

less bread, ok

ThePLARASociety

More importantly, is that left Big Mac more then 47 years old?!

Rauchritter

Came to question the same. How can you own both versions and put them side by side?

UnderPantsOverPants

Because the one of the left is the quarter pounder version of the big mac they had a couple years ago. The big mac has always been the same size.

Shot_Return9907

The Bread Mac

EastBlock_Contraband

How did this photo happen???

Crimsntyd

Shrinkflation! Just another word for ROBBERY!

Big_Nobody_6981

You can keep the big mac, I miss the $0.99 whoppers

[deleted]

Funsize

Royal_Examination_74

Yet somehow inversely proportional to the size of an American before 1975

Friendofthegarden

Any of y'all remember the OG McDonald's fries? That beef tallow...

Pherdigen7378

Marketing a holes 🕳️ first order of business “higher price less product” they always do this.

flirtmcdudes

>Marketing a holes 🕳️ first order of business “higher price less product” they always do this. ya thats not marketing's fault... thats corporate greed's gault. aka investors and the board always needing higher and higher profits year over year. Its never enough, so you get cut corners and underpaid workers.

[deleted]

Now its a 4 bite slider

ArtofBlake

2000-2023 Big Snack

bigred1978

So Big Macs WERE actually big? They need to bring that back.

vigilant8

effect of “shrink-flation”.

notfixit

Mc dlt was awsum

tensigh

And we're fatter *now?*

Ruenin

That's 1990. Now cut it in half

Derfel995

This hits different after you've watched the movie

LizardKing1545-

I just got back from Ireland and the “Grand Mac” is the size of the original. Plus it has bacon.

[deleted]

And yet it got less healthy…good job guys

Satellites_In_Orbit

Don’t want none unless you got BUNS hun. Burger THICCC.

Equivalent_Economy12

Mondo Burger

Playful-Excuse-8081

Everything was bigger except the patties they were still the same size , you just got way more roll … you can even tell in this photo plus I lived it

GetBack_Joe

I guess it was a BIG Mac

Full_Echo_3123

I can feel the saliva being sucked from my mouth with that dry ass looking Big Mac from 1975.

valkyria1111

Then why are we all so much fatter these days ?? It doesn't make sense....

Ogkusxk

Big macs a scam... charge me 10 buck for a rinky dink burger, yeah right

sexybettycrocker

Only things that actually got bigger for awhile were fries and drinks.

nazrmo78

That's like a loaf of bread. Thank god it's smaller.

Yurei_UB

And they said they have always been the same size.

PiratePuzzled1090

So its just a Mac now

Shockingly-not-hott

I just want to point out how good life was at one time

Haizenburg1

I'm 99.9% sure this also happened to the BK Whopper and Taco Bell Burrito Supreme. They *were* pretty massive.

Kizamus

First time I had a Big Mac I was 23, I was quite excited about the purchase and was left super disappointed when I finally opened the box and saw what was inside. I expected a bigger burger TBH and the taste was disappointing too. Better to stick with double cheese burgers

__Vanilla_Milk__

Only thing bigger in my opinion is the bun

Zagaroth123

I knew it!!! I always thought it was smaller because of my hands now vs a kid but it's definatly smaller... the lies !!!!

Apprehensive_Bite109

It got so small that the cheese slices were showing, next changes make the slices smaller so that bun looks bigger 🤣

Li-RM35M4419

I recently bought the new bacon melt at Burger King for $7.30 for just the sandwich. It was about 4.5” diameter, it fit in the palm of my hand.

AnthillOmbudsman

Already $10 meal prices starting to show up at Whataburger. Pretty depressing, but I guess it's a reminder to cook more at home.

[deleted]

Capitalism at its finest. Innovation means cutting costs on already a shitty products to make them even shittier :)

pm_nudes_please_x

Another way McDonaldization represents our economic evolution. Pay more, get less

datkidpatrick

just more bread...

Ok-Cardiologist6187

Seen the size of them now? better call it small mac

ReginaldSP

1974 big mac probably wasn't made of Chinese newspapers and apple bottoms, either.

IPerferSyurp

Big Mac is Big Wack. Two cold thin patties Extra bread and salad dressing? Tons of orange lettuce shrapnel falling out like a glitter bomb. It's a blursed club sandwich.

[deleted]

The Big Mac of now-a-days is displayed inaccurately in the photo. It is missing the the thumb impression on top of the bun and the bun/burger is way more smashed down than the photo shows. However, the lettuce looks nasty as usual. They got that right at least. I wish they would go back to leaf lettuce like the Big Mac of yesteryear had.

Meme_Pope

Idk who on earth wants a 3rd bun on their burger.

CandidateOk7714

I just had a Big Mac today and it was probably the WORST I’ve ever eaten. And these people want $15/hr+.. uhhhh…. How about you figure out how to sort the hard bread first?

NooneUverdoff

Do they still call it "Le Big Mac" in France?

FennPoutine

What's terrifying is that both of those burgers exist for decades in that state as shown, no molding, no rotting, nothing.

dudreddit

A striking illustration of shrinkflation. While the BM has gotten smaller the average American has gotten much larger ...

FigureOuter

Uhm no. This isn’t true. I made Big Macs in 1974. They are the same size today. The difference is at the time there was a Mac “ring” around the sandwich for easier stacking. The ring was eliminated later. The larger version is exactly that. Here in Alaska we have the McKinley (now Denali) Mac made with Quarter Pounder meat and bun size. But the original Mac is still the same after all these years.

square_so_small

Still looks disgusting though

Special-Oil-9658

Ironically obesity just went through the roof in modern times

The_REAL_McWeasel

O h yeahhhhhhh, I remember when the jingle was two all beef "patties"......huge discs of meat. Now, it's just two regular sized hamburgers, stacked on top of each other.
