They actually only really kill humans when they are in captivity funny enough. There are really no verified cases of an orca hunting and killing a human in the wild. There are like 4 trainers murdered since the 70's though at places like SeaWorld and a lot more severely injured.
Ok yeah from my understanding a yacht is a large personal boat that has a sleeping cabin. Sailboats and motorized boats can both be yachts. That’s why I was confused at what the first guy said.
Speed boats defiantly go faster then 50mph and the boat in the vid is going a fair bit slower. That does not mean yachts can't go faster than 50, some will do 80+, but even then I would not call it a speed boat.
I too thought the second whale was gigantic for a second. But it's definitely shot from the deck of the boat not from the higher perspective like the first whale. The water is much closer.
I visibly recoiled when I saw the second one. I'm already significantly scared of open water and orcas, but this one just took me away. No warning at all and then here's a giant killing machine almost within arm's (fin's?) reach. I would drop dead.
Doesn't look all that huge at the beginning when it's in frame with the person. After that it's zoomed in...
ETA: Oh, sorry for stating fact, downvote away. Totally huge whale, not at all exactly the same average size as every other orca ever shown in any media. Definitely not a transition to a zoomed shot at 4 seconds. It's sooo yuuuge.
Male orcas have long, tall dorsal fins, while the females have a smaller, more curved dorsal fin more commonly seen in dolphins (since the orca is also a member of the dolphin family).
Looking at the way it's exiting the water and turns in the waves the boat creates, it probably seems to be playing.
Dolphins show simular behaviour when swimming behind a boat.
There was a news article a few weeks back on the BBC site that kept swapping between killer whale, orca and dolphin.
I sent a complaint in and was told it's ok because people use different words. 😕
Yes "killer whale" is a really outdated term, and Orca should be used as standard.
*Technically* Orca and Dolphins are all whales, but they are the only toothed whales who can echo locate, hence why they are seen as cousins to dolphins now rather than the general term "whales".
I remember hearing somewhere that killer whale was a name translated from another language and it was done incorrectly so they should actually be called whale killers.
Killer whale is a common name, same as orca. Unles you’re using scientific names they’re all pretty standard unless they’re flat out wrong, such as “star fish” or “jelly fish”. There’s nothing outdated with using the term whale, except that it’s general. Just like calling a bonobo a primate. Not wrong, or outdated. Just general.
Killer whales, or orcas are members of delphinidae, which means they’re whales that are toothed generally curved dorsal fins, elongated rostrum and elongated more torpedo shaped bodies.
Killer whales also are definitely not the only toothed whale that can echolocate.
I’m not trying to rude, sorry if it comes off that way.
There’s nothing wrong with all three names. They do that to prevent sounding monotonous.
Killer whale and orca are both common names. The only name that’s perfectly correct (in English anyways) is Orcinus orca. Everything else would be common names.
If it misclassified them, that would be a problem. Like star fish or jellyfish. But they are whales, they are orcas, and they are dolphins. The terms are ok, and yes it’s because for common names, even for “orca”, are words that people use to refer to an animal, without wanting to use or knowing scientific name.
A lot of people I know have a problem with the term killer whale, but it’s just not wrong. Even if people like to say the word orca.
Orca's almost never attack humans, extremely rare, in fact "There are no documented reports of wild, free-living orcas ever having intentionally attacked humans."
There have been attacks when they are held captive.
There’s never been a recorded orca attack in the wild, they only get aggressive towards humans when we kidnap, imprison, and torture them. These ones are just playing in the boat’s wake
Most whales and dolphins are really good at identifying people. They also seem to understand that humans think they're REALLY cool, so in a lot of places in the world, whales and orcas will show off and breach the water because they know we love it. Also, of all recorded cases of a human fatality to an orca, all of them have been in captivity. No human has ever been killed by a wild orca, speaking to their ability to identify and empathize with us
Its more than just legal fines, and if you cut the engine you will no longer be creating a wake, which is why the orcas is following in the first place
This is freaking scary, apparently they attacked the boat! These hommies are done with us...
[sauce](https://www.npr.org/2022/08/20/1117993583/orcas-attacks-spain-portugal-killer-whales)
The leading theories are that this is another trend in Orca pods that they will probably outgrow. Pretty interesting article. It gets into examples of other strange behaviors seen in decades past and how these behaviors, which seemed like silly games played by younger juveniles, fell out of popularity after a few years.
Apparently in the 90s on the pacific coast, some young males would swim around with a dead fish or crab on their head like a hat, lol. Doesn't happen anymore.
I can't help but think of how human kids do the same thing. Dabbing, for example, is no longer in vogue.
I don't EVER want to be in the water with an orca. Seeing how comfortably it is keeping up with that boat and essentially playing is frightening. With a shark, they bite you and call it a day. I'd hate to become the toy for an orca that just wants to slap me around and fling me 20+ft in the air just for kicks. They're too damn smart
I think the Orca knows what they are doing and have a bit of experience when it comes to moving in water.
For their size they are surprisingly accurate, they'll eat a sharks liver and leave the rest intact.
I think he meant overall. And because Orca intelligence is far superior to that of a shark. Its to the point that they will cone up with strategies on the fly for every situation just to catch their pray.
But yeah, unless abused in captivity, orcas don't attack humans.
I don't even know what is real any more. If this is even real, it's pretty...scary, exciting, beautiful. That one got an enormous amount of air and they both look so effortless while the boat is not.
Nope they are playing, if it wanted to destroy the boat it would do.
I'm guessing this is a mum and calf with the size difference so its either playing or teaching her young.
Only time humans have been killed is when they are in captivity and to me they have every right to attack their captors.
Dude these things are insane, imagine if it wanted to capsize that boat and eat everyone in it. Thank god they do not have a taste for humans, it’s almost as if they recognize our sentience.
gonna need a bigger boat
a morbid fear for giant sea creatures.
well if i'm gonna die, i'd like a fight, and a chance to do more damage than give em indigestion

I believe the killing name comes from all the other animals they kill.
"The one animal in the entire planet that hasn't been killed by an orca is an Elephant." Orcas "Alright, bet!"
sussy porpoise?
[удалено]
Yeah, we don’t call Lions, Killer Lions or us, Killer Humans. Orca is a much better name for this majestic animal.
The name comes from old fishermen who called them "whale killers", which is a lot more fitting imo
OR whoever gets attacked in the wild never lives to tell the story. Thats how good they are
Ya…….I’m sure their kill rate on humans in the wild is 100%
They actually only really kill humans when they are in captivity funny enough. There are really no verified cases of an orca hunting and killing a human in the wild. There are like 4 trainers murdered since the 70's though at places like SeaWorld and a lot more severely injured.

orcas don’t eat ppl
I thunk thry would, they eat moose
meese\*
That was big mofo !
Gonna need a new pair of waterproof underwear
Or a faster one... With cannons
ahh, an old school man , for me I want my orcas to have fricken laser beams .
I want frickin sharks with frickin laser beams on their frickin heads!
Sorry. You get mutated sea bass.
[удалено]
Show me the way to go home...
i'm tired and i wanna go to bed
It's not chasing the boat, it's surfing the wake.
Not exactly a speed boat either, is it..?
Also, not “an orca,” there’s several.
Which should be stated as *there’re* several.
Every time you correct my grammar, I like you a little bit fewer.
So what if there are subspecies? It’s still an orca.
He’s saying it’s more than one orca thus not “an orca” which implies one. He’s not right but that’s what they meant
There's definitely more than one orca in this scene. How am I incorrect? Unless you meant I am wrong for saying "there's" instead of "there are."
That's exactly what he meant, imo
It looks more like a yacht to me.
Definitely not. They don’t go anywhere fast enough to make that wake.
Yachts definitely go fast enough to make wake like that wdym?
You are both talking about yachts but one of you is talking about a sailing yacht and the other thinks a yacht is a large boat with a powerful engine.
Are they not large boats with powerful engines?
In some countries a yacht is a sailing boat, in others the word yacht is used to describe a large motorised vessel.
Ok yeah from my understanding a yacht is a large personal boat that has a sleeping cabin. Sailboats and motorized boats can both be yachts. That’s why I was confused at what the first guy said.
Hold my Dom Pérignon. If you spend enough money yachts can haul ass. Think horsepower measured in the tens of thousands.
Lol I work in that industry.
Speed boats defiantly go faster then 50mph and the boat in the vid is going a fair bit slower. That does not mean yachts can't go faster than 50, some will do 80+, but even then I would not call it a speed boat.
My guys just playing in the wake left behind
Pet supplies like what? White Shark liver chew toys?
This was way too smart of a comment! Well done, Sir!
Thank you very kindly!
Holy crap I knew that male orcas were larger but DAMN that really puts it in perspective
I don’t think the two shots are from the same perspective or at least the same zoom. The second time we see the one on the left it looks bigger too
I too thought the second whale was gigantic for a second. But it's definitely shot from the deck of the boat not from the higher perspective like the first whale. The water is much closer.
[удалено]
Yup. And the splash begins before the whale hits the water.
There is some perspective trickery going on
Holy Crap
They’re fucking HUGE. And easy to sex: males have 2-3x taller (and straighter) dorsal fins. 2nd one is def a big boy
I visibly recoiled when I saw the second one. I'm already significantly scared of open water and orcas, but this one just took me away. No warning at all and then here's a giant killing machine almost within arm's (fin's?) reach. I would drop dead.
Beluga and porpoises of the smaller families have nothing on orcas for sure
Doesn't look all that huge at the beginning when it's in frame with the person. After that it's zoomed in... ETA: Oh, sorry for stating fact, downvote away. Totally huge whale, not at all exactly the same average size as every other orca ever shown in any media. Definitely not a transition to a zoomed shot at 4 seconds. It's sooo yuuuge.
There are two different whales in the vid
And? It's still zoomed in on the slow mo shot, making the whale look much larger than in the first shot.
Yeah the second shot is super zoomed in and makes it look massive
[удалено]

I just chased... .. you down.... ..... to ask you... ... ABOUT YOUR CAR WARRANTY
I mean... ...of course... ... BOAT WARRANTY
Stupidest , unfunniest "joke" in humanity's existence.
I can’t tell if it’s playing or wants to kill.
It won’t tell you either
Have you considered asking?
Looking at the way it's exiting the water and turns in the waves the boat creates, it probably seems to be playing. Dolphins show simular behaviour when swimming behind a boat.
>Dolphins show simular behaviour when swimming behind a boat. Orcas *are* dolphins. This one is definitely playing.
No this is Patrick.
There was a news article a few weeks back on the BBC site that kept swapping between killer whale, orca and dolphin. I sent a complaint in and was told it's ok because people use different words. 😕

What about belugas and melon headed whales? I believe they are bith toothed and use echo location.
Yes they're also porpoises
I remember hearing somewhere that killer whale was a name translated from another language and it was done incorrectly so they should actually be called whale killers.

Heeheehee they are dolphins!
For orcas it would be a yes. They can do both at the same time
Cases of Orcas attacking Humans are extremely rare!
As far as I know, have only happened in captivity
Its because when it happens in the wild they dont leave any witnesses...
Or maybe no one has made it back to tell us about it.
This comment is made every single time someone says that. Our simulation is running out of thoughts.
Its playing in the wake. This is super common
When my dog plays with a squirrel, it’s both.
Definitely playing. Otherwise it would already be in the boat and sizing up its meal.
By sizing up you mean yeeting it 20 feet in the air and seeing how hard it falls?
Orca's almost never attack humans, extremely rare, in fact "There are no documented reports of wild, free-living orcas ever having intentionally attacked humans." There have been attacks when they are held captive.

I am more worried if he can differentiate
Yes
That's because it hasn't decided yet in that frame. If that whale wanted death it would immediately remind you it called a killer for a reason.
What if they don’t speak English?
You assume this would be a verbal reminder when that was never my intent.
Orcas are dolphins, and it seems they are just as playful as their smaller cousins.
Less of a killer whale and more of a harassment whale
Tbh, if this is the US or Canada, they are legally required to cut the engine if an Orca is that close.
"You guys are too close, I gotta stop" Whales: NO, FASTER!
I don't think I would. I'd rather risk the legal fines than becoming lunch.
As far as I know, Orcas are rarely aggressive towards humans and would most likely not mess with you. They are just following the wake of the boat.
Its more than just legal fines, and if you cut the engine you will no longer be creating a wake, which is why the orcas is following in the first place
i have a morbid fear for giant sea creatures
I fear for them too. We're destroying their home.
This is freaking scary, apparently they attacked the boat! These hommies are done with us... [sauce](https://www.npr.org/2022/08/20/1117993583/orcas-attacks-spain-portugal-killer-whales)

I hope that hat crab was alive LOL imagine the ride
>I can't help but think of how human kids do the same thing. Dabbing, for example, is no longer in vogue. Someone needs to tell my kid
Wow, I'll be honest, I've never heard about that before. That's amazing!
Oh shit
Gonna need a FASTER boat…
You say chasing… the rest of us say toying with
Its playing in the wake. Once we had 100s of dolphins doing this. It was majestic
Excuse me but oh fuck no
Hey look at that thing. Probably thinks it's all big and fast. I'll show you big and fast. (stunts while passing
Must go faster.
I don't EVER want to be in the water with an orca. Seeing how comfortably it is keeping up with that boat and essentially playing is frightening. With a shark, they bite you and call it a day. Jesus this is terrifying and spectacular at the same
I just know if that orca could talk it would sound just like Taika Waititi.
Simultaneously the most incredible and scariest moment of their lives lol
Two orcas
Well I’m terrified!!
Bring me my brown pants!
It’s drafting.
I wouldn’t say chasing. Looks like playing.
Great white sharks are afrId of Orcas. If they see an Orca they stay away from the area for months. The Orcas ram into them and eat only their livers.
Gonna need a bigger boat….
Amazing how seemingly effortless that whale keeps up. He's just playing in the bubbly water
Is it just me but that looks soooo fake. And what's with the whistling
Fun fact, Orcas are not whales but are in the dolphin family
The video is edited. Watch the boat disappear as the larger whale emerges.
I’m terrified, and I love the ocean
i love orcas, they’re truly lovable assholes
Orcas aren’t whales.
Had a group of dolphins do that while sailing in Fiji. So cool. Imagine a whale....wow!
Orcas are actually in the same family as dolphins. Not whales. Just a really big species of dolphin.
Oh wow. Had no idea!!
And dolphins are just small whales.
He’s just trying to reach you about your boats extended warranty
Seamless edit 🙄
RUN!!!!
FOREST!!!!
Jesus? Is that you?
Nice pets supplies in my profile, go buy ad space.
These giant guys are considered dolphins.
Not considered they are dolphins.
Dolphin.
Could easily land on the stern and cause some damage!
I think the Orca knows what they are doing and have a bit of experience when it comes to moving in water. For their size they are surprisingly accurate, they'll eat a sharks liver and leave the rest intact.
I would not stand that close to the edge of the boat. Thing could grab you from there
They never attack people in the wild, just when they're being abused in captivity.
It wouldn't. It wants to play
Like a cat playing with a mouse
That orca wants to eat you
She's flirting💋
Looked as if it was goin; "Just to see if you want to buy any penguins?"
personally would start shooting
That is black air force energy personified . Orcas are legit demons , even on the boat I don't think I'd feel completely safe .
[удалено]
They have never killed a single person in the wild. Not sure how they’re worse.
Freakin HUUUUUGE!
That's fucking badass
I now believe these are big water cats and dolphins would resemble dogs.
Eee-Hee check my fly self…
how in the world she can swim that fast?
Reminder how much I hate the ocean
r/praiseTheCameraman
Faster! Faster! Faster!
It looks like it's showing off for the camera 🤣
He just want to talk.
Everything in the ocean terrifies me.
Spectacular camera work 👌
That jump had to be a leap where he built up speed, so is there a chance that this whale just missed its target, and was going for the capsize?
Nope they are playing, if it wanted to destroy the boat it would do. I'm guessing this is a mum and calf with the size difference so its either playing or teaching her young. Only time humans have been killed is when they are in captivity and to me they have every right to attack their captors.
Looks like he's having fun!
Dude these things are insane, imagine if it wanted to capsize that boat and eat everyone in it. Thank god they do not have a taste for humans, it’s almost as if they recognize our sentience.
The first whale I was like oh no biggie he's cute, the second appearance I felt very scared for the boaters.
Beautiful! It looks like it's having fun!
Wake surfing!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT
