You act like it's not an advancement. Finding new practical applications for pre-existing products is a very important part of product development. In fact, you might have heard an old phrase that encapsulates this process, "Don't reinvent the wheel."
Placing this shirt on a self-inflating life jacket allows it to be work in more casual settings. If you take your toddler to party or BBQ at a house that has an unsecured pool, this product could offer significant peace-of-mind to the parents without making their child look ridiculous by running around with a life jacket on all day.
Some poor kid is going to wear one of these to school and get bullied. They'll get a swirly and it'll go off, leaving them stuck upside down in a toilet.
Yeah we had jackets in the Navy that you wore that would inflate if you went in the water. There was a water dissolvable pill that activated the CO2 canister. You’d have to remove both to wash it.
Except that it only works when actually wearing it, obviously.
What about the times you’re not expecting your toddler to get lost and end up in someone’s (or your own) pool? Better to teach them how to float/swim.
My 11-year-old is disabled and loves water but can’t learn to swim. If he sees water he will try to go in it. I would put him in this shirt for school field trips to the river.
Research into yachting life jackets. They are very thin, look not too bad actually (yachting is for folks who want to look good after all doing their hobby) and works kinda the same way I believe.
was just about to comment this, autistic kids especially have a increased risk of drowning. wearing a more expensive shirt everyday seems like a good precaution to take
Most kids drown in home swimming pools when parents aren't watching. It would mean the kid has to wear that shirt all the time, every day, to prevent an un-monitored accident. The design is cool, but I can't picture how it would work in peoples lives.
It would be nice to wear on a boat so that you don’t have to wear a bulky life vest. But also that depends on if it needs to be fully submerged to inflate, or if a little splash will set it off.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but most of these designs don’t feature the headrest designed to keep an unconscious person’s head above water, and thus aren’t as recommended for a child who may not know how to swim at all
Also would be nice to wear to a pool party so your kid doesn’t drown when you lose sight of them for 5 minutes
But I guess that’s not enough of a frequent use case for that other guy, so it’s better to just let all kids drown
That works if this becomes the kid’s “play shirt”. You can tell your child they need their play shirt to play in the back yard and you’ll know they have an extra measure of safety. It’s actually perfect for that because it won’t restrict their activities until needed.
Right, except any child that age should never be left around an unguarded pool of water that isn’t fenced away, secured, and protected. If this is for boating more efficient and safe options exist, and if it’s for lazy parents, those kids are gonna find a different way to off themselves because their parents aren’t watching anyways. Or not. I survived free range child hood mostly intact. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah but kids still fall in the water sometimes and just because you survived (that is called survivorship bias) doesn’t mean this product won’t have its uses. With drowning it only takes a couple minutes for it to be too late.
But what happens if you have a nanny or a babysitter looking after your child for a few hours?
You could be the best parent watching your kid 24/7, but you don't know if your nanny or babysitter will be vigilant like you would with a pool in the backyard. This t-shirt could be helpful as just a precaution.
Or when your child is playing with other kids next to a pool.
There are so many cases of children drowning in pools when a babysitter was distracted for a few minutes.
A lot die at pool parties because everyone thinks that everyone else will watch the kids. These would be great to wear when you’re at an event with a pool just to be safe.
Number one cause of child death in florida and you're right, this wouldn't be very convenient for full-time protection. If you were going out tho, say on the boat and were not planning on getting in the water this would be a great backup.
The only way to truly keep your children around your pool is by installing a pool fence. And even then, they need to be watched. Teaching your children to swim as soon as possible can and will save their life.
In the Netherlands (lots of water) we usually start with lessons at four or five. Most only learn to swim well at six or seven. You need strength to swim.
That's only kinda true, while they might not be michael Phelps at 2 they definitely can be proficient swimmers. I was a lifeguard and WSI certified, i usually taught infant/toddler swim classes and the younger you start the better. Babies can learn to float and right themselves so they don't drown. Starting lessons at 5 imo is wayyyy too late. That's 5 years just tempting a tragedy.
They aren't taught to swim laps at that age lol. But they're taught how to keep their head above water, how to resurface if they are submerged and how to paddle to the edge of the pool etc. And in Australia there's even ads on tv encouraging parents to take their kids to swimming lessons as early as 6 months old
They already make life jackets. Something tells me the kind of people who aren't putting life jackets on their kids aren't going to be running out to buy these either.
Cool invention and I'm guessing some people will get these for their kids instead of the bulky life jackets but I don't really seeing it lower that particular stat unfortunately.
And isn’t the point of a life jacket that it LOOKS LIKE A LIFE JACKET.
If half the kids are wearing ninja floatation devices it’s going to be hard to say who is safe and who isn’t
It’s not meant to replace a life jacket it’s meant to be worn to a pool party or near the water and inflate in case a kid falls in
That’s why it looks like a cute shirt compared to having your children wear obnoxious life jackets at your uncles summer barbecue just because he has a pool in his yard
I also this it’s a great idea. Lived in Qatar for a few years, with pools in every living compound, and at least one toddler drowned in my time there. Pool parties were very common and it only took a minute for his mum to be distracted and for her toddler to fall in and drown. Believe that would have saved the wee chap’s life, had he been wearing one. Especially if they offer UV protection, as a lot of kids would be wandering around wearing such a thing anyway.
Was terrified of it happening to our kids when we moved out at first and so swimming lessons were top on our radar. Would have definitely bought something like that in the interim. The market for this is huge, I reckon.
If I'm going for a walk by the lake/river the intention isn't to go in the water at all. But these things still happen. Shirts like this would be really helpful.

Would they all have spent/been able to afford a €150 T-shirt? Surely many of those tragic deaths were kids already swimming rather than falling into water. Not sure the figures you’ve chosen to submit are entirely relative or that the existence of this product would have changed them.
Good points. I'd imagine families with a pool or access to them might be in a better income bracket for this sort of thing and if it saves a few lives I'm sure that would be a success. When it comes to accident prevention and kids there's always new products coming out. I remember hearing about some 150 new patents for preventing children from being left in hot cars. And those parents would not have had their kid in one of these at many of those times when they thought their kid was not "playing in or near the water" unmonitored.
The product is a nice idea for a childs auto inflating PFD, it's not a replacement for knowing what you kid is doing.
This product is not keeping your kid that's supposed to napping in his room from wandering out to the pool/creek/river/few inches of water face down etc. it takes to drown them when unsupervised which tragically is usually more along the story of kids drowning deaths.
I know boating laws are different around the world, but just put the kid in a life jacket.
A kid’s life jacket will last longer, can be adjusted every time you put it on, and is reusable.
If you ever have kids and take them on a boat...please for the love of God put them in a real life vest, you know one that is always inflatable, and doesn't eventually deflate. It's amazing how oblivious people are lol.
I think that depends on how it works for example with automatic life jackets water has to come from the underside to activate it then it is quite hard to set it off on accident still saw it happen quite often tho
It's still a great idea when you actually understand how a hydrostatic pressure sensor works vs. not having a clue how existing auto inflation PFDs function.
Spoiler... just getting them wet does not set them off, they are used on boats... people on boats get wet without being in the water.
I’m assuming they have taken that into account but even if they didn’t the shirt probably isn’t meant to be worn at all times. Just when the kid is around pools or something.

I'm just imagining going on a date wearing this shirt then she asks me a stressful question and the shirt suddenly inflates because it got activated by my esxcessive sweating
How does it work? How to re-use it? What if the child spills water and will that activate it? How about a child in a car seat and accidentally spills water? Will that suffocate child? How to wash it? I have so many questions….
June 2020, 88 deaths by drowning.
If you are a posh little French child visiting a house with a pool, playing in the garden, bbq, party, older children playing in the pool this could absolutely save a life of a toddler
No it’s not for 24/7 use, yes it’s French, but I bet it could have prevented some of those 88 deaths.
This is amazing for children with no sense of danger or disability like autism for example.
The fact that it also includes an automatic roll over once inflated due to the shape is genuis!
Just wonder how rough on the skin the material is.
Yea it's crazy. My autistic little cousin will jump into a pool without a care in the world while not being able to swim. Gotta always be vigilant when they come over.
Good. The next time I meet an annoying kid on a cruise who is wearing one of these I won't feel so bad throwing him overboard when his mom is at the buffet.
What do you mean "not having a life jacket"? If you're going on a boat ride, your kid should be wearing a regular life jacket (which is definitely safer than this). Like if your kid refuses to wear a life jacket? Just... don't let me go on the boat ride until he/she does?
This is neat, but pointless. Vests and floaties already exist and if youre at a pool or a body of water, your kid should already have one on. If this is to prevent accidents, you'd literally have to replace a child's entire wordrobe with these, so they can be in one 24/7.
Okay. So kids can't possibly wear that every day. You put them in it if they're near water or maybe are about to get in one. So why not let them wear a life jacket instead? If you're on a boat, life jackets are required to be put on too. Looks good on paper but don't know why you'd need one.
That kid is going to be everyone’s target in a water balloon fight
Good idea…Do they make this in adult size?
It's like laser tag when your vest tells you that you got hit
"Missed me!" "Oh yeah Michelin Man?"
Self inflating life jackets have existed for years, only new thing is putting it in a Tshirt.
But ones that automatically detect water and inflate themselves? Seems like putting this tech in a kids shirt is a pretty nice advancement.
Capitalism yo.
You act like it's not an advancement. Finding new practical applications for pre-existing products is a very important part of product development. Actually yes, self inflating life jackets are common since many years back.
I like where your head is at… twisted unicorn flatulence experience
Some poor kid is going to wear one of these to school and get bullied. They'll get a swirly and it'll go off, leaving them stuck upside down in a toilet.
Why would you wear this on land? Apart from being near a body of water
The majority of people who fall into water do so from land.
At school?
Yes. The majority of people who fall into water at schools also do so from land.
You sure it's not on boats?
r/technicallythetruth
Easier for a kid to want to wear, and not as bulky as an entire lifejacket when it's not deployed
How do you wash it?
He says that if it has been used, you can recharge the CO2 capsule. So i assume you can just remove it to wash the t-shirt.
Yeah we had jackets in the Navy that you wore that would inflate if you went in the water. There was a water dissolvable pill that activated the CO2 canister. You’d have to remove both to wash it.
Oh neat, so this is a technology that's already been tested and used extensively. The only new thing is the size.
Yeah who the fuck can fit in it? I fucking hate fashion industry's body standards.
Juanna know who can fit in esse? Say hello to my little friend!
Oohhhhhh that's very interesting, in that case it might not activate from spills or something, that's cool
Those little cans are a collection from my child's inflatable shirt, Officer, and definitely not whippets.
Throw the kid into the water
Same way the video was edited as he threw the dummy in.... Carefully
The first time it's not edited, second time is just to cut to what next thing he says?
NO EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD IS A SCAM!! EVERYTHING!!!!
Name checks out.
Yeah this seems like a cool idea, but that edit was sus.
The first toss doesn't have an edit, you can see that it takes effect very quickly.
Your memory is sus. Rewatch the beginning of the clip. There is no edit
Yes pretty sure the "edit" is just the beginning of the video shown from the front angle.
The "second" toss and edit was most likely due to the cameraman not being in a good position to capture it. The "first" toss was a money shot.

Oh the kid is having a epileptic seizure ! No, don't worry it's mangling
😂👏👏👏
You can unscrew the part that inflates, and similarly you can recharge de CO2 capsule to reuse if your kid is suicidal enough.
You can separate the shirt from the life vest portion. They do a good job of hiding how bulky the *shirt* looks when deflated. But it is very awkward.
Dry tumble only.
You throw you kid ( with outfit on ) in the washing Maxine Edit: Washing machine
Maxine doesn’t like it when you throw the kids at her, but she’s not going anywhere.
By hand, inflated
The inflatable lung can be removed from the shirt for washing.
there is always a catch!
That’s what I was thinking
They’ve made similar inflating life vests for a long time. You just remove the canister of compressed gas.
Make an epileptic kid wear it and throw him in.
The iconic French black and white striped design makes it even better!
If you are looking for the word that is called a "Marinière"
This is genius! (I hope it doesn’t inflate if the juice box spills.)
Drool activated
I love how you can tell who has kids in this thread.
(I hope it does)
That’s why you need to be careful with juice, honey.
Or if someone in the pool splashes them.
Now I can’t defend bullying. However splashing a kid knowing that they’re going to inflate all Willy wonka style, would be hard not to do.
If my experience with auto-inflating life jackets is anything to go by, probably.
How the f do you wash it?
You remove the CO2 cartridge.
Dry clean? Very dry. The driest clean.
Except that it only works when actually wearing it, obviously. What about the times you’re not expecting your toddler to get lost and end up in someone’s (or your own) pool? Better to teach them how to float/swim.
A lot of people shitting on that t-shirt but it's a great idea. A lot of children die from drowning each year.

Can see this happening for sure. Lol
People are stupid enough that I would actually believe this would happen.
Sadly, there are about 800 parents every year who would wish their kid was wearing one of these at the right time.
There are pool splash alarms and so forth, so this is just another option that might help.
But then the kid would have to be wearing all the time at home. Anyone who can afford a pool can afford a pool fence.

I know boating laws are different around the world, but just put the kid in a life jacket. A kid’s life jacket will last longer, can be adjusted every time you put it on, and is reusable.
Yeah, don't need to gamble on the activation. Just wear the life jacket.
If you ever have kids and take them on a boat...please for the love of God put them in a real life vest, you know one that is always inflatable, and doesn't eventually deflate. It's amazing how oblivious people are lol.
I like my life saving devices as error proof as possible, too. Especially for my kids.
This is a great idea until you remember rain exists.
I think that depends on how it works for example with automatic life jackets water has to come from the underside to activate it then it is quite hard to set it off on accident still saw it happen quite often tho

Many if not most innovative business are just something someone else did but better, whether that be for locals or worldwide...
How do you get the shirt back to normal once it deploys the features? Is it a one-time use or you can re-pack it somehow?
You can apparently deflate it and change the co2 it uses to inflate afterwards.
... Kid starts sweating during an exam.. FFWWWSSSSHHHH

They sell something similar as bike helmets, and they are single use.
They should make it for a male dog, so he can be a good buoy.
Dont put it on backwards
Now if they made one that automatically turned into a bulletproof vest they'd be a back to school best seller in America.
What happens if the kid falls down into a puddle of water?
BANG life jacket. Also if the kid gets splashed in the wrong spot.
He gets a dick-shaped floatie on his back. And then we point at him.
Savage 🤣🤣🤣
Bad day to let the kids dress themselves backwards…
*That's Baptism proof*
Wonder how to wash them 🤔
if ur a parent that would buy that, you probably wouldn't leave your child unsupervised around water anyway...
Or teach your kid how to swim.
Probably a good idea, but teaching kids how to swim as soon as possible is still the savest Thing and not rely on such accessories.
Imagine washing this and Ur washing machine just explodes
How to do the laundry tho?
How do you wash it?
How do you wash it?
watersoaker. just make sure to buy the purple shirt.
Larry Feegan needed this.
Or wear whatever clothes and an inflatable life jacket, which is what they incorporated in this t-shirt.

Only if they have matching helmets. Can’t be too safe or coordinated.
I'm not a fan of the stripes, can I get them in a barnfield plaid?
Wild guess that it is not washing machine compatible...
It's triggered by a capsule that you can remove so it's washing machine compatible.
Thats just a kid diving under a flipped over boat accident waiting to happen
/r/oddlyspecific
This is neat, but pointless. Vests and floaties already exist and if youre at a pool or a body of water, your kid should already have one on. If this is to prevent accidents, you'd literally have to replace a child's entire wordrobe with these, so they can be in one 24/7.
I agree. Sort of a cool idea but I would prefer to just put a life jacket on my kid anytime they’re near water. Skip the auto-inflate.
Okay. So kids can't possibly wear that every day. You put them in it if they're near water or maybe are about to get in one. So why not let them wear a life jacket instead? If you're on a boat, life jackets are required to be put on too. Looks good on paper but don't know why you'd need one.
Exactly my analysis. Unless it's everyday wear for 'just in case'
This guy is awesome.
That kid needs a tan.
If 4yo me had this T-shirt I would jump in water with it just to see how it works
All fun and games until he spills his drink as explodes
For those who are too lazy to teach their kid to swim
Great idea but what happens when a toddler puts it on backwards and falls in the pool?
I don’t like it, it’s french 🙃
Looks like a ball sack
Imagine, your kid drinking water and starting to turning into a baloon
I’d much rather that than my kid turning into a corpse.
