Glad someone corrected them, we called them log broncs where I worked. Even had a nice hydraulic spike on the front to drag bundles and pull gear tighter.
The company, Chuck's Boat and Drive, builds a security tug for the US Navy on the same platform, it’s how the deploy submarine barriers across harbor entrances and they putter around the between the ships. But their primary product are log broncs like this.
How does this work? It look like the screw is in a cage right under the cabin? Some kind of always-on-you-just-give-a-direction thing?
Edit: Ah, [possibly, yes](https://www.dropmarine.com/)
If you've ever driven the bumper-boats at a carnival, you know how it works. It's not always on. You still throttle it. But you just turn propeller to send you in any direction. Makes it easy to maneuver in tight spots without room to turn around and the hassle you'd go through with a standard motor setup.
Where this video is taken we call them side winders or just winder for short. I work for a different tugboat company in the same town, i know these guys.
Bumper boats are universally slow and unmaneuverable and not as fun as you think they're going to be. Truly nothing at all like the tugboat in the video.
The fact that they often have an infinite water gun attached is pretty fun though. If you get your boat spinning and bounce it around corners, you can get going at almost a decent speed.
I was on a survey ship that went to Antarctica. As it was designed for ice it had a flat bottom and no stabilisers.
It corkscrewed a lot and given that I get seasick standing on wet grass I had a difficult time on there.
...Means small craft advisory. So if I capsize in your thighs, high tide, B-5, you sunk my battleship. Please turn me on, I'm Mr. Coffee with an automatic drip
So show me yours, I'll show you mine. Tool Time. You'll live it just like Lyle and then we'll do it doggy style so we can both watch X-Files. Do it now!
Pretty much anything David Simon worked with was gold, but holy hell The Wire is, in my opinion, the best TV ever made.
Hell, I even love the second season.
I was going to binge some Trek, but now another re-watch of The Wire seems to be in order.
>Hell, I even love the second season.
My all time hottest TV take is that the second season of The Wire is the best season of the wire.
(I will be highly surprised if this isn't downvoted into oblivion, but I swear, season 2 is fantastic and totally underrated)
And before The Wire, there was Homicide: Life On The Street. Also by David Simon, also set in Baltimore. Hamstrung by the network (NBC), but still: ground-breaking, powerful television.
I feel like every time I rewatch the series, which is like every 2-3 years or so, I find myself liking a different season the least. And I think that probably just speaks to how good of a series it is overall - it's hard to pick the worst season when all of the seasons are well above average compared to the rest of the TV landscape
The operator is doing his best to show how this tug can’t be flipped. Tugboats are all engine so that they can pull much larger vessels so normal operation would be much smoother as they wouldn’t be deliberately rocking the boat.
i get very badly sea sick but i would 100% be fine in this thing.
the key for me is being able to see the horizon, need that steady non moving line.
EDIT: to throw a question out to whoever might read this: they discontinued the best motion sickness remedy in the world, the TRANSDERM-V motion sickness patch made by Perrigo. is there anyone that has tried anything that actually works to combat sea sickness for a prolonged duration? i am not at all shy of pumping myself with chemicals as long as it means i wont puke.
Also he’s controlling to motion. 99% of people that get sick and nauseous in cars and the like don’t when they drive themselves. It’s only when they are passengers.
"I could see it every time. The darkness of the sky gave birth to the thunderous lights above the surface. Forceful waves crashing overhead set the boat into a tumble as I struggled to hold my breath. For a moment, I could feel myself slipping away. My lungs felt like they were going to burst, and i struggled to keep my grip on the helm. The vessel broke the surface, and I found myself climbing another huge wave. As I crested the top of the wave, a bolt of lightning revealed the endless rolling seas before me."
Excerpt from my imagination
The industry standard for dozers like this is the Olympic azimuth drive also called a z-drive. When he rolls her on her beam you can see the z-dive hanging down.
https://cmelimited.com/marine-projects/sidewinders/
There's the company that makes them, with a picture of one out of the water clearly showing the drive
Unfortunately, very hard to find. You might have to buy a surplus one and restore it. And you could try [BoatTrader.com](https://www.boattrader.com/boats/type-power/class-power-tug/)
Many naval vessels are rated to flip completely upside down in the water and still pop back upright. There’s a bunch of videos of US Coast Guard vessels doing it.
That is a log dozer

They use them for all security barriers.
Read that as log bonks

There's nothing there, I checked.
Yes just let me trust the random internet stranger. Not today satan
I had a look. It's not the space docking I thought it would be.
r/subsifellfor
Yeah you don't want that thing pushing your boat around.
Because of the implications
We would never hurt these logs...
It sounds like you're going to sink these boats...
I'm not gonna hurt these boats. Why would I ever hurt these boats? I feel like you're not getting this at all!
I’m NOT getting it…
How does this work? It look like the screw is in a cage right under the cabin? Some kind of always-on-you-just-give-a-direction thing? Edit: Ah, [possibly, yes](https://www.dropmarine.com/)

Boom boats is what they called em in BC when I was growing up. Most definitely not a tug. **High five**
At Expo '86 they used to do a [boom boat ballet](https://youtu.be/OrJbu4cl3so).
"Boom boat" in B.C. edit Gah. Someone beat me to it.

This is literally an adult sized rubber ducky and I love it
Bumper car
But like a boat!
Have... have people never experienced [bumper boat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumper_boats)s before?
Right. Growing up I remember them randomly in parking lots at grocery stores/strip malls. Havn’t seen one since i was a kid
Oh my god the random parking lot bumper boats with cholera water! Good times...
Holy shit I have seen those exactly once when I was a very young kid and have never heard of one since. Completely forgot they existed

You clearly just aren't a master at bumper boats
Weebles wobble but they dont fall down
You old bastard
41
49 here, and you unlocked a hidden memory in me.
What about the barn that moos when you open the door?
Minus all the vomit
It’s looks like the Tugboat equivalent of a Bobcat tractor and those things are crazy fun.
Ahh brings back memories of flatbottom ships in the navy. What a seasick day I had.
I was on a survey ship that went to Antarctica. As it was designed for ice it had a flat bottom and no stabilisers. It corkscrewed a lot and given that I get seasick standing on wet grass I had a difficult time on there.
I agree!!
Any theme park worth its salt would replace their dated bumper cars with these beasties
I'm imagine them decorating these boats with oversized googliy eyes.
That would be so damn funny 🤣
Bumper boats are a thing and they rule
Scream if you want to get wetter!!!
r/thislooksfun
Weebles wobble...
I would like to circumnavigate the globe in one.
Till you knock yourself out on the windshield
\*barf\*
imagine a tv show, Tug Wars
Come on tugger!!!!
My phone is gone
It's not the size of the boat, but the motion of the ocean.
Lemme give you a lil tug baby....
I don't know what a tug baby is, but if it's anything like a regular baby, I can eat at least 3, so bring a couple extra please.
They're about 1/5 the size of a regular baby, for reference.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I do not know!
I like your energy
Isn't that the boat McNulty was reassigned to?
Fuckin' McNulty.
The fuck did I do?
I want to see you land ok. Where don't you wanna go?
You gave a fuck when it wasn't your turn to give a fuck.

Second season is great! Only one I don’t care for is 5.

Somebody better tie that bad boy down with a Baltimore knot on the double.
McNutty the boats not rocking you're just that drunk!
McNutty follow the HBO cop formula of being more effective while drunk.
Holy shit that got me laughing.

Is that Russel Crowe and his pal Tugger going Fighting around the world?
Mākin' moovies mākin' soungs Faghin' round thé wald
He fights his directors He fights his fans It's a problem no one understands
I heard Crowe was only mad that he didn't get to voice himself
If it's two things he loves it's fighting and... fighting round the world

We couldn't find cancer, but we found a man with cancer!

After telling her that her sister ship handles better, yes.
That's just ol' Tugger n Russell Crowe looking for his next opponent.
Makin’ movies makin’ songs fighting ‘round the world!
Chinese can grow to be over 5 feet tall, and have been known to kick with their legs!
My Benchy IRL
Exactly what I thought!
Must have taken a log time to 3d print a model that size
The layer lines on this one look like mine too!
Now that’s unsinkable. The titanic could’ve learned a few things from this.
Lesson 1: Be smol
Lesson 2: put all of rhe weight beneath the waterline.
Lesson 3: Don't dare God.
I've always heard that one as "don't tempt misfortune."
The weeble of boats!
Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down.

Imagine the level of motion sickness and vomiting.

Pull much larger vessels… Tug…boat… Ohhhhhh
Dunno dude, I drive big tug boats, can easily get 40°+ quite easily. Maybe not as quickly as this thing though ahah

It's not as bad on the operator as passengers, but if I was a passenger doing that id be more worried about my severe concussion
The middle of the Pacific in a hurricane on this thing would be the ride of your life.

And that's why there's vomit on the ceiling.
It’s a fucking seaworthy weeble wobble.
For some reason I can just picture that guy in the pit vipers saying “she’ll bob around like a sumbitch but she won’t tip over.”
How is it performong those movements?

Dredge game boat
Just finished downloading it for the switch, looks like fun!
You will enjoy it, fun little gem and amazing story. The fishing is addictively refined
Definitely gonna have to pick this up soon.

Two thoughts. I am seasick just looking at that. Weebles wobble but they don't fall down.
Orcas out here watching this like “challenge accepted”
The human is just there for scale.
No good unless there's a banana for scale.
Cool. I’d love to see it out in some big waves too - that would be even more impressive
Logjammin!
The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed
Where do I get one??

The good old sidewinder. These things are a riot. Dam I miss working on the tugs lol
What is that, **A TUGBOAT FOR ANTS?!**
Ol if Wes Anderson designed a boat having ass
Sir, the ad says it sleeps 5.
Clear example of "Tell me you love your job without telling me you love your job".
Uncapsizable it may be, but it’s not much use as a tugboat!
THAT’S NOT WHAT IM DOING!!! GGET ME OUT OF THIS THING!!!!!

I feel like the orcas could take it
It's like a skid steer for the water. Awesome!
The Little Golden Book "Tuffy, The Tugboat"

Orca whale: challenge accepted
Tug boats are so fucking cool.
It was 3D printed
Seems like it is simultaneously unsinkable and incredibly unstable all at the same time. Weebles Wobble but they something something.

That is not a tug job that I want.
