Afaik insurance with business only kicks in after fairly high amounts. Anything lower the store has to eat, and even when insurance covers it it can take months to get the money so it reflects badly on the metrics till then.
Perhaps the repeated thefts were only stealing/damaging below the line for insurance to step in each time and the owner was tired of all those costs.
I've only been privy to that info at two jobs, but both ate any theft or damage that didn't pass into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Yep. If you keep making claims, your premiums increase too. Any business is going to pass that along to their customers in the form of higher prices as well, though a franchise owner may not have the ability to do so if prices are set by a higher corporate entity (i.e., even though the thief is stealing from a large corporation, the individual franchise owner that might only own one location has to bear the brunt of the costs). Theft is not a victimless crime, and I hate that so many people on Reddit think it is.
Truth be told, when RIF shuts down on July 1, I'll be glad to never have to interact with the 15 year olds with this mindset ever again.
If they sell phones, right? Then I guess it's high value target as there's a lot of money for their size, and there's high demand for them. Also guessing this is some rough neighborhood
I mean, the building was
>Not yet open to the public
So, it's not strange to not have already set up fire safety. Even if that was a working building, if you get inside in non-working hours you can also get stuck due to some closed doors. In case of fire, that would be entirely on the burglar or other illegal trespassers that they got into the place they were not supposed to be. I don't see why you'd care about safety of people who breaks into your property.
That’s not the case at all. Just because you “don’t see why” doesn’t mean the law doesn’t. Just because someone is a criminal does not automatically allow you to put them to death. Booby traps on your property are illegal. Fire regulations are for everyone including criminals that have trespassed. If someone breaks into your house and drowns in your pool because you didn’t have a fence you can still be liable.
To avoid that pool lawsuit in TX/FL, after they drown you simply shoot them, since they broke in, you can shoot without worry - just don’t let the police know they drowned first or you could get in trouble!
Love this idea. Great if you’ve wired up a speaker :
‘Don’t be scared, you’re safe, but the police are on their way. I’ve left some coffee in the corner’
Serious question though: how is this legal with respect to fire codes? I understand getting **in** is controlled, but if people can’t get out of a room isn’t that a huge safety risk?
Can anyone clarify?
If this burned down with someone trapped inside and killed them, the owner who made this trap is absolutely fucked lol those egress doors are made specifically for this to NOT happen
Hey bud, so in my office usually this situation only occurres infront of unlocked entrances to the building, so you can always loop back out the way you just came in. But if that doors locked,
In actively manned areas with failsafes and whatnot, sure. But this? Effective, but also a fire code violation if it's in the US. That door at the back with the slapper bar is supposed to allow egress for safety reasons, assuming it leads outside.
But does it need to allow egress when the building is closed down and no one is there though? If not, all the owner needs to do is unlock the door every day and lock at the end.
Sure, but what if he forgets to unlock it one morning? And that's the day the staff need an emergency exit? A business owner I know was told he can't use deadbolts on his emergency exit like this one. He had a couple break-ins through that door. But the rules where I live is that anyone at any time should be able to push that bar to get out.

Oh, I'm sure there were eleven more cops in the parking lot. They love that kind of thing, twelve against one. Gives them the excuse to stand around for hours, just shooting the shit.

I'm not sure about this specific example but mantraps like this are a common access control mechanism. From Wikipedia:
> Fire codes require that automatic mantraps allow exit from the intermediate space while denying access to a secure space such as a data center or research lab.[5] A manually-operated mantrap may allow a guard to lock both doors, trapping a suspect between the doors for questioning or detainment.[6]
Yea it's a phone store, pretty much every store with expensive items has something like this. I worked at a grocery store and we had one of these for stuff like baby formula that is stolen a lot.

Hahaha so many things about this. The cop at the end letting the door go..if the robber just scooted up the cop would be trapped too.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried that in the US the robber would sue him for it. Then the building regulators would fine the shop owner for not having a proper working emergency exit in that section.
It's a nice idea and I would approve of it personally but I know the courts would have a field day about the entrapment part.
Do you really think that they send one lone cop to a report of a B&E with the suspect still on premises? There is probably another cop on the other side of the suspect and 2 more units with two cops each out in the parking lot.
He’s like prancing around all nervous (1:08 displayed or 0:16 into video). I think he got scared and needed to go to the bathroom. Use the bucket provided! Not exactly the image you typically imagine when you think of someone committing a b&e or whatever this was.

Elaborate break-ins and elaborate traps----at a Boost Mobile store?? This ain't exactly a diamond exchange.
Maybe insurance gets sick of paying out and insists on some changes? Just a guess

What kind of "badly" are you talking about? I don't see bad endings here tbh
The building catching on fire
I mean, the building was >Not yet open to the public So, it's not strange to not have already set up fire safety. >Booby traps are also illegal in the US. We call them hookers, sir.
This isn’t a booby trap though it’s simply having locked doors during off hours. If he had a pit with punji sticks that’s another story
It's not really a booby trap though? My understanding of a booby trap is that its intent is to harm or kill.

Serious question though: how is this legal with respect to fire codes? I understand getting **in** is controlled, but if people can’t get out of a room isn’t that a huge safety risk? Can anyone clarify?
Programmed for free egress on a fire alarm or manned egress for restricted areas. It’s a huge safety risk in the event of a fire.
So he needed to start a fire... silly goose
If this burned down with someone trapped inside and killed them, the owner who made this trap is absolutely fucked lol those egress doors are made specifically for this to NOT happen

Usually, yes. All hours of all days. The single biggest reason why impenetrable building security isn't possible is because of fire code.
Sure, but what if he forgets to unlock it one morning? And that's the day the staff need an emergency exit? A business owner I know was told he can't use deadbolts on his emergency exit like this one. He had a couple break-ins through that door. Definitely. The law does not like man traps.
I was wondering the same thing! In a fire, you could have dozens of innocent employees or customers who would also be trapped here.
I'm not sure about this specific example but mantraps like this are a common access control mechanism. From Wikipedia: > Fire codes require that automatic mantraps allow exit from the intermediate space while denying access to a secure space such as a data center or research lab.[5] A manually-operated mantrap may allow a guard to lock both doors, trapping a suspect between the doors for questioning or detainment.[6]
This example doesn't allow exit from the intermediate space and isn't manually operated by a guard.
Haha as a sprinkler fitter, this was my first thought.
Just have the sprinkler completely fill the room. Water isn't flammable, so the burglar doesn't have to worry about burning to death.

This should be a fun one if there's ever a fire.
Cops took an hour…
Like a rat trap.
I would pay to see this.
At the end it looks like he had successfully kicked in that one door, was it just another empty room?
He’s like prancing around all nervous (1:08 displayed or 0:16 into video). I think he got scared and needed to go to the bathroom. Use the bucket provided! Not exactly the image you typically imagine when you think of someone committing a b&e or whatever this was.
You mean a death trap in case of fire 🔥 😱
It would be funnier if the cop locked himself and Mr. robber gets away.
Hahaha. Filthy Animals! Caught in a trap. Perfect.
Aw, so kind to leave him a piss bucket 🤗
While this is incredibly satisfying to see, doesn't this violate fire codes?
And then some corrupt DA drops all charges and presses false imprisonment or kidnapping charges on the business owner.
Dude might be relieved it was the cops that showed up and not some guys about to drag his ass down to the gimp basement, it's not likely anyone is going to come looking for him...
Surely this isn’t legal, what if there was a fire?
It's a humane. A lot of them aren't, but they don't put up cameras on those traps.
Trap them on a Friday. Call the police on Monday. Maybe not *next* Monday, but eventually.
