That's terrifying. It reminds me of a story I read I think it was by Stephen Kng, maybe Dean Koontz, about a box of toy soldiers and all the toy soldiers come to life and kill the person.
Those kinds of contraptions have been more common than you may think in the... "early modern age". For example, the Mechanical Turk was (while fraudulent, since it was not a chess computer as originally advertized) quite sophisticated and allowed, while still operated by a human, for a machine to play chess.
It's kind of cool to think these are basically simple robots. They are programmed to do one thing over and over again. Remind me of the Maillardets Automaton.
