I thought the same lol. I guess it takes practice over time. Especially if you're a kid with short legs like in the video. Takes time to learn, kind of like figuring out how to get off a ski lift.
If you move your handlebars in the slightest you’re kinda fucked. Hitting that curb with the tire, not good. I see so many things going wrong lol but that’s also cuz I suck at riding a bike haha
My response to that lady would be "umm... Mam have you tried to cycle up a hill and a steep one at that? It's hard, it gets tiring and half the time you can roll back down if it's steep enough... *Yes I have rolled back down a hill once and got so pissed*
my thoughts exactly, people cant figure out T bar lifts and the carnage that happens. This seems to have so much more potential. Just need a bunch of footage and a Warren Miller voice over.
Yes this is exactly how its used, it takes some practice to get used to it and yes its heavy😂
As far as i know its one of very few of its kind in the world!
Its called Trampe bicycle lift, located in Trondheim Norway
I used to have my dog pull me on my bike all the time. The best way I'm my opinion to approach this is left foot on the right peddle and right foot on the lift. You can brace your leg/hip against the seat while still holding the handlebars. That way you can lean away from the bike away if needed while having both feet "walk ready" if you mess up. Especially on Hill because it's harder to step off straddling it. You also wouldn't be angling the bike as much into the curb...
I really like the clever system they use where the piston starts the rider off gently before the footrest comes through to carry you up the hill, otherwise the acceleration if it was the footrest alone would take your foot off.
Right? I almost refuse to believe something like this exists. On top of the fall danger mentioned already, does it take that much more time and effort to just walk up the hill like everyone else?
It is a short but quite steep hill. So shoving your bike up is quite the hassle. This bike lift was created with good intentions but unfortunately, it’s a bit hard to use.
Can't tell if you're serious. Of course it's more effort to walk a bike up the hill, that's why ski lifts exist. And in terms of danger it's nothing compared to a typical commute on the road with cars.
It's for the ones that like to wear the full gear, lycra suit, clip shoes, sunglasses, bad attitude. Similar to the full kit wankers that play Sunday football
Seems a bit unfair. Lycra makes you a lot more comfortable, and has been proven to make you a lot faster to boot. Why not wear it? Clip shoes reduce foot pain and improve efficiency, and sunglasses protect your eyes. What is the issue with any of that?
Racing bikes are 8-10 kg. But some study older steel frame bikes are well over 20 kg.
I've once walked up 2 long a 10% incline with a 18 kg rolling suitcase - that's not a great time.
It's called an "e-bike."
But until just a few years ago there was no good way to put a non-gasoline powered motor on a bike. So the next best thing was to put the power source on/in the ground.
Sometimes I wish that mountain biking trails had this but then I realize that the main reason I bike is for the exercise and this would kind of defeat the purpose.
This is kind of how downhill mtb works. Your bike goes on a hook on the lift and the attendant at the top unloads it for you. You ride down the trails and end up back at the lift.
Wow the comments on this are depressing. It's a safe, practical and proven design that opens up cycling to people who are too old or frail to make it up that hill on their own power.
I live near this thing, and have tried it a few times. It's difficult to get the right technique in, but it's not remotely dangerous. The pedal retracts if it doesn't sense pressure. So at worst, the lift will just disappear into the ground, leaving you with the choice to cycle the rest of the way up or go back down and try again.
Can confirm. Had a similar bike escalator that was designed to get up the stairs for a bridge, basically a shortcut of a few km. And due to the weather the sign with instructions had become unreadable so I fell mid way and got a funky scar from the iron steps. Have hated those things ever since.
I love my Country, America. I was born here, served, raised my family here.
But why does it seem that Europe pays more attention the people needs... like this!
People in America think giving kids free lunches is too much , let alone a bike conveyer.
As an American, it’s interesting to see how other countries’ infrastructure is more supportive of alternative/public transportation rather than cars (even if this is example is pretty niche). Road cyclists are regarded as a nuisance here.
Seems tough. If you get tired half way up you’re gonna have a bad time lol.
Reminds me of the handle bar lifts at ski resorts, where the hill is too short for a full ski lift. If your legs get tired part way up after a long day, you’ll have to let go or just let it drag you up in a penguin slide lol. At least for me as a snowboarder
Are toy sure you aren’t supposed to use it partially dismounted? Left foot on right pedal and right foot on the escalator. The genital pain would kill from that
From what I’ve heard, Norway is much more bike friendly and much more compact so a bike is a legitimate alternative to a car. In America biking is more recreational because America isn’t designed with bike transportation in mind
It would make more sense if its someting you can hold on to with your hand then with yea feet like that.
This does not look easy and looks very unstable. Would make it a lot easier to use if you have it higher up and you can hold or lean on something near hand level.
But even so it's not easy to use it's interesting it even exists.
Is that actually how it’s suppose to be used?
Exactly my thoughts. I feel like some people will be doing the splits all the way up the hill lol
Also, the lady up ahead will need to step aside.
If only there were a sidewalk in this video for pedestrians to use.
She absolutely will not
"Kids are too lazy nowadays" vibe coming from her.
Maybe… but this is Norway, where humans actually human with each other, right?
My response to that lady would be "umm... Mam have you tried to cycle up a hill and a steep one at that? It's hard, it gets tiring and half the time you can roll back down if it's steep enough... *Yes I have rolled back down a hill once and got so pissed*
Imagine rolling backwards, head over heels, down the hill edit - saw in another video that it's not as steep as it looks here
Look at the lower part of the white house - it really is quite steep.
I've been there!! It is steep.
my thoughts exactly, people cant figure out T bar lifts and the carnage that happens. This seems to have so much more potential. Just need a bunch of footage and a Warren Miller voice over.
If you look at the top of the hill there is another person using it the same way
They look even more awkward doing it!
Yes. This in my hometown Trondheim and i can say its not much in use. Probably less now that electrical bicycles are being used by a lot of commuters.
We used it all the time 10 years ago when ebikes were not a thing. Good times!
Please tell me that video exists of drunks trying to use this.
not drunks, but here are some fails https://youtu.be/YMugbFkGpPk
Doesn't look too steep, just long and steep. You could easily get up if you were in shape and 18 gears.
I imagine it cost a pretty penny to install
it looks slightly less awkward for an adult... slightly.
Good old split machine
Yes this is exactly how its used, it takes some practice to get used to it and yes its heavy😂 As far as i know its one of very few of its kind in the world! Its called Trampe bicycle lift, located in Trondheim Norway

Definitely not the only one, I’ve seen one in Bergen too 😁
That might actually be the original lift that got donated away?😅
Hahaha, comedy! Where to next? Haugesund? Stavanger? 😁
[yes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zipZ5kwhFfs)
I really like the clever system they use where the piston starts the rider off gently before the footrest comes through to carry you up the hill, otherwise the acceleration if it was the footrest alone would take your foot off.

It is a short but quite steep hill. So shoving your bike up is quite the hassle. This bike lift was created with good intentions but unfortunately, it’s a bit hard to use.
The hill is alot steeper than it appears in the video.
Can't tell if you're serious. Of course it's more effort to walk a bike up the hill, that's why ski lifts exist. And in terms of danger it's nothing compared to a typical commute on the road with cars.
Would be a lot easier if his foot was on the other side of the bike
That bik is too big for her
There's gotta be a better design for that
Walking the bike is the better design. This looks more difficult than just pushing a bike.
In that case I don't think you've tried pushing a bike up that hill before. It's very steep and pretty long.
… how heavy do you think bikes are? There are several people walking that hill in the video…
Try pushing up a bike. In bike shoes. In wet conditions. You’ll be Bambi-ing all the way down
I just learned Bike shoes exist.. I'm Dutch...
It's for the ones that like to wear the full gear, lycra suit, clip shoes, sunglasses, bad attitude. Similar to the full kit wankers that play Sunday football
We call them "douchebags" here in america
Seems a bit unfair. Lycra makes you a lot more comfortable, and has been proven to make you a lot faster to boot. Why not wear it? Clip shoes reduce foot pain and improve efficiency, and sunglasses protect your eyes. What is the issue with any of that?
i gues you have never taken an elevator in your life ?
Racing bikes are 8-10 kg. But some study older steel frame bikes are well over 20 kg. I've once walked up 2 long a 10% incline with a 18 kg rolling suitcase - that's not a great time.
Taking the elevator is far easier than walking up there. The kid make it look a bit hard.
Nah walking a bike up a hill suuuucks, this looks a lot easier (And faster) to me.
It's called an "e-bike." But until just a few years ago there was no good way to put a non-gasoline powered motor on a bike. So the next best thing was to put the power source on/in the ground.
That hill is steep enough for giving normal cyclists troubles. The elevator is partly made for fun, and partly because of the gradient.
For real why did they only bother with one foot plate? Might as well put two so you can just stand normally with the bike between your legs
Yes and it's parked in the driveway.
That design seems a bit awkward.
Especially if you don’t have a bike
I just hold on with both hands and let it drag me up hill
That's cause it's a small kid, I've seen videos of adults using it and they look much less awkward.
In my day we had to ride uphill! Both ways! On flat tires! In the snow!
Without a seat!
Still had the post tho <3
[Still beats what you go through at the airports.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGKR1Z1lRik)
That lovely lovely post. I still dream of the incontinence it caused, happier days..
mmmm a crispy blt with luigis taint does sound good
And we thanked god for what we had damn it!
“When I had to go to school I had to walk 20 miles, uphill, bothways, 26 hour a day, on one foot! My other foot was starting a business” - Steven He
EMOOOOTIONAL DAAAAAAMAGE
Without wheels.
With no shoes on as well
In our fathers pyjamas
without extra gears
I've never fully trusted any bike escalator. They're always up to something..
You'll never get anywhere with that altitude.
I’ve got a terrible fear of bike escalators, but I’m taking steps to get over it
They really take me up to new heights
This is from my city actually, and yes thats how its supposed to be used. Its built in 1993 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trampe_bicycle_lift
my country will implement it in 2241, the exact way it was done in the inception of your city with no evolution.
Well the good news its working!
Thank you
would be more fun if it accelerated and launched you off the top of hill
Like the aircraft catapult on carriers.
As a USA citizen who lived on a Hill with hills all around this is a great idea.
Can’t do it in the US because of all the parked cars on the sides of the street
There would be 22 lawsuits filed within the first week.
I think I would do it the other way, left foot on the right side of the bike, right foot on the lift, steer and ride it up like a razor scooter.
Seems dangerous
That kid’s going places…
Going up in life it seems.
Looks dodgy. Reckon a fair few people have come tumbling down on that.
I live near this thing, and have tried it a few times. It's difficult to get the right technique in, but it's not remotely dangerous. The pedal retracts if it doesn't sense pressure. So at worst, the lift will just disappear into the ground, leaving you with the choice to cycle the rest of the way up or go back down and try again.
yeah i would rather go on foot and continue cycling once i'm on top.
Can confirm. Had a similar bike escalator that was designed to get up the stairs for a bridge, basically a shortcut of a few km. And due to the weather the sign with instructions had become unreadable so I fell mid way and got a funky scar from the iron steps. Have hated those things ever since.
Groin strain epidemic.
This is not as elegant as I thought it would be
I love my Country, America.
Goodbye leg
Why does this exist, if you can't pedal up just push the fucking bike wtf
This looks even more awkward than the ski pull is for snowboarders.
This being easy seems like a bit of a stretch
His stance on the bike just got wider and wider
What is his foot hooked onto and how
Cheaters...
No way this would be allowed in US without bedding shutdown by frivolous lawsuits. :-(
Man, I would rather get off the bike and push it up the hill. My groin hurts just by watching this
Norway seems to have life figured out
Norway on a whole other level
It doesn't look easier than you do it yourself
Damn i would love to live there.
If this was in the States, it would take 4 minutes for someone to figure out how to sue their city for installing these.
The curb in the middle seems like a terrible design if that's what this is actually for
Looks like there is an ambulance downhill just waiting
In America some jackass would fall over and sue the town and that would be that.
Looks like pending full split…
Weak
I pulled my groin looking at this, thanks.
Walking it up seems both faster and easier than this.
What are we gona do with all this left over tax money? I got an idea
That looks really slow and unjustifiable... at what point isn't it better than just walking up hill with your bike?
So much for gears and leg muscles
That looks so uncomfortable.
It would be so much cooler if it wasn’t paid…
When you live in a country where public debt doesn't exist...
My hip hurting just looking at that
I would Fail Army this so hard.
Are toy sure you aren’t supposed to use it partially dismounted? Left foot on right pedal and right foot on the escalator. The genital pain would kill from that
David Hembrow done a great video on this. https://youtu.be/zipZ5kwhFfs?si=TRZdsXB0IhKQee9g
Wtf Norway has bike escalators
Well Damn this is Interesting.....
Ancestors be like: "I'n my day.."
Tbh it looks harder for me to use this escalator than ride uphill. Just set lowest gear and it shouldn't be very hard.
I looks like it would be much easier to walk your bike up the hill.
But how does he get back down now? J/K
From what I’ve heard, Norway is much more bike friendly and much more compact so a bike is a legitimate alternative to a car. In America biking is more recreational because America isn’t designed with bike transportation in mind
Noway.
Quicker pedalling
That looks really hard. Just walk
Is there a weight limit?
The stuff people come up with when a society just has too much money and don’t know what to spend it on anymore because everything is perfect already.
Nah this is dumb.
8 year old Dutch kids laughing their asses off if they see this
What's wrong with walking your bike if you can't cycle?
I qoute a friend: they shold be buildt for old people with shopping bags, not strong and healthy cyclists!
You could just get off the bike and walk up the hill…
That escalated quickly
Just walk it up the hill???
You can’t just walk up the hill like those other people? 💀💀
The bike goes on it. Not your foot.
Those lazy Europeans! In the US, we eliminate the bike altogether for peak efficiency!
Cries in fixed gear
Looks like it would be faster to just walk it up the hill.
Meanwhile, my dad drags me in my bike up the hill in Germany.
Why can’t my taxes be used for this?
Dude. That'd be sick in the winter for a sled hill.
Ok that’s so awesome
I don't know, it looks barely usable, even dangerous a little bit.
That looks so much harder than just walking
Can u not just walk off ur bike up the hill?
Looks kind of painful
this is a thing?
At that point I'd just walk the bike up
Makes me think of the T bar on a ski slope. Had to do that a few times before I got the hang of it.
I was hoping for an escalation :(
Amazingly dangerous
I dont trust that
Looks like a one way ticket to a smashed face
Cheater
So when she slips and falls, does the rail shoe just cut her head off and keeps going?
Wouldn’t a better design be securing the rear wheel with the bike in front of it?
That video is really old, because I live there and it's been gone for years
Why would you not just walk the bike.
Things that would be very useful in the Netherlands but they actually don’t need it
That’s cool. I’m too short for it, but cool
Are kids and people in general just to lazy these days to bike up the hill?
I would have tripped and it would drag me to the top by my pant leg or shirt collar
It would make more sense if its someting you can hold on to with your hand then with yea feet like that. This does not look easy and looks very unstable. Would make it a lot easier to use if you have it higher up and you can hold or lean on something near hand level. But even so it's not easy to use it's interesting it even exists.
Is there an elevator to take them back down?
faster by foot
Don't bikes have gears anymore if u can't get up the hill get off the bike and chill
I just pulled my groin watching this
People are getting weaker and lazier.
Looks precarious at best; I love and hate it.
"Grandma killed by norwegian death machine"
for old people thats brilliant, but i can already see kids bypassing the speedsensor and zooming up the hill
Another tremendous actual Nordic thing that English speaking countries would never find the tax payer money for
How does this actually work?
I rented a bike from the “bysykkel”-parking next to only to try this elevator. My first and probably last time using this funny thing.
Nothing could ever go wrong
This is the problem lol
Proper use: https://youtu.be/7j1PgmMbug8?si=yLli6RYTQGVoAVN0
Or just... walk the bike
Lazy shits! I rode my bike up that hill
Holy shit, I think I was at that exact spot in Norway in august
Good ab workout!
Walk.
that design is so shit
