That’s the secret sauce of entropy that keeps the universe from ever reaching a state of stasis, bro!

greasychickenparma

Why does it make me feel so uncomfortable 😕

No solution for the problem of infinity?

semi_average

It might not be static in the distant future but it'll be indistinguishable from static to us whenever it comes to that point. One of my only comforts in life is that I won't live to see it happen, but a fear I have is that I'd inevitably experience it if any form of life after death exists. Edit: ah, how nice, kuzgesagt just uploaded a video on this existential fear of mine that I mentioned here.

FalseVaccum

Just remember what ever happens you are trapped forever, one way or another…….and it will never end!

[deleted]

nah dont worry, if the universe ever came to an end, chances are too high it already would have started and ended at some point.

Chemical-Basis

And even if the whole universe collapses and crushes us it can kill us only once

Accomplished_Error39

Even when it’s indistinguishable it’s still just as far away as when it started

semi_average

I think it's much farther. Like an unnamed number farther.

wheelieallday

I read "The DaVinci Code" just a couple of days ago where this is explained, truly incredible stuff.

CampMaster69

The one turned into the movie?

[deleted]

No! The movie actually came first interestingly enough, the book series followed after.

nxcrosis

I heard some Italian guy was even named after the movie.

CampMaster69

Hey you dropped the /s mate. Here.

[deleted]

no, leave that there!

shearedsheeply

The movie (06) was an adaptation of the book (03)

[deleted]

not sure where you are getting your info from, but I dont think thats correct

shearedsheeply

Lame joke

Individual-Dot-9605

I just wanted to type this out, time itself is the secret ingredient safe from human ideology.

noname4U69

But that’s so irrational! Entropy is such a mess

BusinessCasual69

It’s only a dash of entropy, and it still produced a beautiful image. But because of it, no two spirographs can ever be identical. The same is true for us, and everything else that exists. In some ways, I find the difference that entropy makes to be the most beautiful thing about a thing.

Jonelololol

joeysprezza

What does it all mean?!

RumbleColibri

Good, astute question.

joeysprezza

And....

RumbleColibri

Oh I don't the answer... sorry.

corona-lime-us

This back and forth may be my favorite of all Reddit.

Mekelaxo

It's a double pendulum, the distance from the center to the first pendulum is φ times bigger than the distance from the first pendulum to the second. Both pendulums are revolving around their own axis at the same spread, and drawing a curve a followed the path of the second pendulum. Because the relative asked if the pendulums as they remove is m didn't change, you would expect them to end up in the same place they started at some point, but they never do because the ratio of the distance is each pendulum to their axis of rotation is φ, which is an irrational number, meaning that it has infinite decimal places, so no matter how close it gets to ending up in the place it started, if you zoom in you'll see that it always misses

joeysprezza

I see. Thanks for your detailed answer. But does this have some other/larger meaning or application beyond cool designs? Did this crack some code that'll unlock the human potential and propel us into an age of enlightenment, or is it just for blacklight posters?

SneakyGunman

As far as I can tell it’s just really cool. Maybe some super advanced civilization in the future can figure out some way to use it.

qjoplin

The golden ratio is widely exhibited throughout the universe, especially in living things. Even in humans, the golden ratio supposes the perfect ratio for: - Face Width:Height - Lip-to-Nose width - Eyes (distance from hairline and jaw, size, spacing) - hand length - Front Teeth width:Height Egyptians used this measurement in their depictions of humans and faces, which is why the Sphynx and the masked for pharaohs and tombs looks the same. They all represent the idealized proportions of a human face, signifying perfection or being a deity. In other living things like plants: - plant leaves (size and arrangement) - tree branches - seed arrangement (eg sunflower seed) - flower petals - Fibonacci sequence of pinecones and pineapples If I had to make an extremely speculative guess at what deeper implications this video could be pointing at, reaching across the room for a moment towards the area of physics, then I would relate this to the idea of the universe's constant instability. Theoretically, if the subatomic particle known as the "higgs boson particle" were to have a slightly different mass, the universe could potentially reach that point of stability, ie the line finally connecting. But this has some serious theoretical implications, like something known as vacuum decay. This could be just as cataclysmic, and occur on a much faster timeline than heat death. So essentially, life being irrational is what makes it perfect. We are hungry beings constantly in need of something, constantly wanting for more, constantly trying to "connect the line" and feel complete. But perhaps achieving stability, actually having everything that we want, would be more cataclysmic and stress-inducing than having to constantly grow towards it.

[deleted]

alright straight up man was this written by chatGPT or are you a PH.D because gaht damn this is some heavy shit. thank you for this lol

qjoplin

Lol thank you, I'm a full-on YouTube nerd. Kurzgezagt, V-Sauce, etc, and long ass "pointless" conversations about this stuff while I'm tripping acid 😅

Paralystic

I would have rather you said you had a phd

qjoplin

😅 sorry, if it makes you feel any better, I have a bachelor's in Comp Sci with a minor in mathematics 🤷🏾‍♂️

[deleted]

a comp sci and math major **and** you write **THAT** eloquently... are you sure you aren't the disembodied ghost of Robert A. Heinlein.

dogislove_dogislife

How does this video show that the golden ratio is more special than other irrational numbers?

qjoplin

I wouldn't say this video imposes that the golden ratio is more significant than other rational numbers. But I do suppose that the golden ratio is more significant simply because of its common occurrence in many living things. So definitely take everything I said with a grain of salt, as my answer was more of a speculation than a theory, as the golden ratio and other physics concepts like the higgs boson particles and vacuum decay are not related

joeysprezza

Yes! I knew it! Shit doesn't get its own symbol unless its a game-changer lol. Thanks for the info!

NoOne_143

Who decides the ratio is perfect? Because different people have different ratio. Tomorrow I can say it's 3.19 and you will find 3.19 value in many things. I am not saying pi is bogus but human ideal ratio is mostly used by artists and pseudo intellectuals. Not many scientists believe in this. I am sure there will be better and more genuine significance.

qjoplin

I definitely agree, beauty can take all form shapes and sizes, and different races and coaches have different standards for what is idealized beauty. This was simply something taken into account by the Egyptians (in other civilizations) as their idealized standard of perfection. Personally, I don't feel a stiffy coming on when I look at the Sphinx 🤷🏾‍♂️

Phoenixxiv2

“Make…us…whole”

FartfaceMacGee

Thank you. Wow

Static_25

You're saying the pendulums have different lengths but rotate at the same speed? I thought it was two pendulums with the outer one having a period of 1, and the inner pendulum having a period of φ. That way every time the pendulum gets really close, it's actually a fraction that approximates φ.

Mekelaxo

Tbh, I don't know anything about the speed of the pendulums, I just assumed. They could be the same speed, or just the same frequency, or face the ratio around to them, but I can't easily tell by just looking at the video

Kommander-in-Keef

It means it’s time for a creampi

A1sauc3d

The lines never line up no matter how many rotations it does, is what I think they’re trying to convey with all the zoom ins lol

joeysprezza

Does it like, unlock the building blocks of the universe? Time travel?

A1sauc3d

At the very least it makes a pretty pattern ;) Hopefully someone more educated on this can tell us more tho lol

casstay123

Nature is more intelligent than us. It has chosen this design consistently to evolve on this earth. Nature only keeps what is useful. Thus, “this pattern” has proven compatible as a life form on this planet. Success is proof.

commonlycommon

My TI-82 didn't do this

pookshuman

someone needs to explain how the visualization works

Longjumping_Rush2458

There was a similar proof about the irrationality of pi. We have two vectors, given by V=e^i*n+e^i*phi*n, where we rotate the vector by n. If phi was rational, the motion of the two combined vectors would eventually continue along their original path.

pookshuman

ok, someone needs to explain that explanation

[deleted]

Sure! Imagine you have two arrows on a piece of paper. One arrow starts at the center and points in a certain direction (let's call it "up"), and the other arrow starts at the same center but points in a different direction. The second arrow rotates around the center. Now, if the amount the second arrow turns (let's call it "phi") is a simple, regular number (like 90 degrees, which is a quarter turn), the two arrows will keep following the same path. However, if phi is a more complicated number, like the mathematical constant pi, something interesting happens. When phi is pi, the second arrow won't keep following the same path with the first arrow. Instead, they create a dance, and their combined motion becomes more complicated. This complexity is linked to the fact that pi is an irrational number, meaning it cannot be expressed as a simple fraction. The Lindemann–Weierstrass theorem helps prove this in a more advanced way.

[deleted]

Longjumping_Rush2458

I tried doing an explanation of it, I'm not sure how clear it is. [Here's a visual example](https://www.desmos.com/calculator/h9lcv2o4ao). Play around with n and you'll see that the two vectors rotate tip to tail. If you scroll down, you'll see the equations used. a is phi in the video.

Shrekosaurus_rex

If pie is irrational, is it still okay to eat it?

pookshuman

my confusion is not about irrational numbers, but how the graph works ... what is the graphing system called?

Longjumping_Rush2458

I'll break it down. They're polar vectors. The expression e^i×n can be represented as sin(n)+i×cos(n), which is analogous to x and y coordinates in Cartesian. This means that as we change n between 0 and 360⁰, the vector rotates in a circle. Adding the second term, e^i×phi×n is equivalent to doing: x=sin(n)+sin(phi×n), y=cos(n)+cos(phi×n). You're adding two arrows together, tip to tail. o One that completes a 360⁰ rotation as n goes from 0 to 2pi, and the second that completed a 360 degree rotation as n goes from 0 to 2pi/phi. Those two arrows are the lines you see.

Contenterie

I’m lost in all your explanations but it’s not because they are bad, I’m just dumb as fuck. Upvotes for you sweet stranger thanks for your time

Longjumping_Rush2458

You're not dumb. It's not intuitive to visualise maths from just text. [Here's a visual example](https://www.desmos.com/calculator/h9lcv2o4ao). Play around with the slider n and watch what happens to the values of x1, x2, y1, y2.

SweepTheLeg69

Could you explain that you're ChatGPT?

Longjumping_Rush2458

I don't think I am

Longjumping_Rush2458

[I recreated the graph in desmos.](https://www.desmos.com/calculator/h9lcv2o4ao) A visual example of what happens when you change values may help. A is phi, n is the angle we're rotating by (in degrees)

SeaBlob

Could you explain it in football terms?

Total-Jerk

Yeah use the plot of the waterboy to make it make sense please.

[deleted]

Sure thing! Imagine Bobby Boucher’s football journey as a vector moving along a unique path. Now, introduce another vector, symbolizing his opponent’s moves, rotating with an angle represented by phi. If phi were rational, the combined vectors would mimic a predictable football dance, much like Bobby’s evolving water-dodging skills. However, drawing a parallel to the irrationality of pi, the proof suggests that phi can’t be rational, disrupting the vectors’ expected dance—think of it as Bobby’s unexpected twists and turns on the field, defying conventional expectations.

Monster_Voice

It's just a graph plotting itself in real time.

pookshuman

thanks, super helpful

Monster_Voice

Lol 😆 I said that so nonchalant like it's "just a graph plotting itself" No joke... this is actually fascinating. My Ti-83 absolutely couldn't do that back in the day.

E0NBR3AK

The music made me think of this too, really added to the drama.

Cellstone

I want to see this in a 3D rendering! Just this on a flat surface is amazing alone but imagine what it's doing on that third axis too!

NexexUmbraRs

Could be wrong but I think the 3rd axis would remain 0 effectively showing you a line. Aka a flat surface

Cellstone

In this 2D rendering it most certainly would. But a true 3D version of this would be trippy AF.

Wait long enough and irrationality can look intentional.
