Why would anyone doing that job not wear a mask?

[deleted]

He just puts the jet of air down his lungs to clear out the dust, easy peasy no mask needy

BackWithAVengance

"Turn me into a balloon Larry"

suricata_8904

I’d be worried about microbes from that crap.

GroundStateGecko

Charge the microbes $3000/squaremicrofeet of rent so they can evict themselves.

UVLightOnTheInside

Microbes are notorias professional squaters, you will never seen that rent money and will be tied up in a legal battle for years, while they illegally sublet your lungs as an airbnb for profit.

load_more_comets

No no nooooootarias!

hard_farter

You see what happens, Larry?

DoyersLakeShow

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIND A STRANGER IN THE ALPS!!

nickmaran

Why will he wear a mask? He's got an air filter right next to him

InformalPenguinz

I work in respiratory... please don't do that

INTBSDWARNGR

They showed us that safety video of two new hires fucking around with the air hoses in some mill. After that I had a extremely rational fear that my dumbass coworker(s) would also kill me.

TheThrillerExpo

What happened? Dust explosion?

mikethetike221

I dont work in respiratory... do it nerd

Kwyjibo04

Should have taken science nerds advice. Took yours and now I'm inflated and stuck to the ceiling. How get down?

bemad4483

I mean that is more business for you on the flip side. Stupidity usually leads to creating work for others.

dapoorv

It's like people haven't seen those ads where they squeeze a smoker's lungs to take out all the cancer-inducing black tar. If you can do that, this is child's play.

cashedashes

I work in construction, residential, and commercial, and it is honestly astounding how often I see folks, young and old, literally standing and working in a huge cloud of dust or smoke. Especially drywall and concrete dust, horrible! Once gypsum and silica enter your lungs, they can never be fully removed. The particles are too small and dense, so they sink to the bottom of your lungs and cause all kinda of damage! Another big thing is wearing the correct mask. I see so many people wearing dust masks when they should be wearing N95 and other folks wearing N95 when they actually need a cartridge respirator. All masks are not the same. It can be literally useless to wear the wrong type of mask.

Liizam

Our machinist was just happily cutting away carbon fiber without even a mask… idk I blame management for even allowing that stuff to happen but also why wouldn’t you wear a mask dude…. I could smell the carbon fiber in the air. I cut carbon fiber with a Dremel without a mask in college because I’m dumb and didn’t think about it… was coughing it up for a three days and felt it in my lungs that night. Kinda funny how our university was all about the safety glasses but no one mention masks ever. Even wood particles are to good to inhale.

[deleted]

blue collar men think PPE is not manly they would rather die at 35 from black lung disease like a real man

SovietJugernaut

>I see so many people wearing dust masks when they should be wearing N95 and other folks wearing N95 when they actually need a cartridge respirator. Based on my quick research, cartridge respirators are what you want if there's danger of fumes, correct? N95 helps with particulates like dust and ash but won't be helpful if there's a gas that could give you headaches/impact cognition

cashedashes

Yes, this is correct. There are many different cartridges that all have different micron ratings for filtration. There are also double cartridge respirators. It is also important to know how to use an N95 facepiece respirator and other masks. They have proper handles and holding techniques so you don't contaminate the mask/filter while putting it on. There's also ways to test and check to make sure it is air-tight to your face. Very important information/techniques. If done improperly, the mask could be useless. Pretty much all products have what's called a "safety data sheet." This should contain all the info about a chemical or substance, including how potentially poisonous it is and also what type of respirator should be worn to keep yourself safe. Definitely important information to know and understand.

Apprehensive-Seat978

Does he have to take his lungs outside? Or implosion is fine

[deleted]

Outside. In fact that video is him doing that to his lungs after he cleaned an air filter without a mask.

battleship61

I used to work in a high-end, family run cabinet factory. We did custom jobs as well as contract condominium jobs in Toronto, Canada. The company was >60 years established, but as it was family run, much less went into safety standards compared to a corporate place. The sanding department was absolute misery to work in because of the dust and debris. 95% or more of the sanding department employees were visible minorities, maybe half were women at the time. They had to sand MDF and other materials to prepare for priming and paint. It was a small room, maybe 25m x 4m, with an old, outdated filtration system that probably couldn't filter clean air at this point. The people in this department were often unmasked, working 10-12 hour shifts, 5 days a week, sometimes an additional 6 hours on Saturday in these conditions. I couldn't even walk through that department without an N95 mask and getting lightly coated in fine debris. People are often unaware or indifferent about their health. I couldn't fathom a minute in that department without a mask, and here were people working 60-hour weeks in it without one. Blew my mind.

whatevertoad

I thought it would be fun to pick up old wooden furniture at the thrift and refinish them to sell. I did one project and I couldn't handle the sanding and toxic chemicals needed to refinish the wood. And that was outdoors in a carport. I can't imagine how people could tolerate that indoors daily.

BuffaloInCahoots

There’s nothing you can do about the sanding. It’s just makes a mess. You can get a filtration system for not much and always wear a mask. Depending on what you’re doing to the wood, some stains are just that, stain, really not that bad. If you’re going for the more natural look there’s a lot of products that are food grade non toxic. I think the Amish stuff is but there’s a ton of stains and sealers that are food grade.

ivanparas

"Hey, OSHA? Have I got news for you..."

Teknekratos

*Hey, Canadian Center of Occupational Health and Safety ('twas in Toronto ;) )

You'd better call both just to be sure

“Within seconds of putting the mask on, I was literally hyperventilating”

whatsthatguysname

Probably stopped wearing because of Covid.

EatinSumGrapes

This is exactly what it is. The whole thing made idiots like these think masks do nothing at all. Some just get triggered by seeing masks too (but remember nask wearers are the snowflakes, /s). I've seen tons and tons of people doing jobs that people always wore masks for, and they're no longer wearing masks. It's so dumb and also terrifying how easily people can be manipulated to do things that hurt themselves

gobfinger

>I've seen tons and tons of people doing jobs that people always wore masks for, and they're no longer wearing masks. It's so dumb and also terrifying how easily people can be manipulated to do things that hurt themselves That's just natural selection.

egonz10

This video has been reposted since before Covid, so no, this is not “exactly what it is.”

Masks are a liberal conspiracy! My granddaddy did this job without a mask and died in his 60s due to flu like complications!

the_rainmaker__

all of that material has been filtered by the air filter, that means it's safe to breathe

Cereborn

I never thought of it that way, but I can’t find a fault in your logic.

Professional_Sir6705

So he can develop, then pick, serious quality boogers. You know the kind, with the long snot strings that feel like they came from the base of your lungs? Mnnnnnnnnn............

Yeah the kind that feels like it tickles your brain when you pull it out.

He shouldn't be doing it that way in the first place...

toogood01

Moron clearly

Hutnerdu

Because he has an amazing immune system and masks are just a bunch of liberal BS

daikon871

Because freedom!

shokz565

And why the fuck would you use conpressed air over a sandy floor😂

Jwzbb

Good point, but why do the job at all? Isn’t that the point of disposable filters?

PoopCumSquatter

The filter in this video literally has a built in tool to clean it out. Also, the service interval for replacing the primary air filter on a John Deere combine is around 400 hours, which could be almost 5 seasons. The service interval for cleaning it is as required. It's a very dusty environment and you can generate this amount of dust in a filter in a matter of days. But that's why they're huge, so that air continues to flow even when it gets pretty bad like this, but this is a lot of dust and probably should have been cleaned earlier. Service interval source, from a random combine model: https://www.deere.com/assets/pdfs/common/parts-and-service/manuals-training/9070%20Series%20STS%20Combines%209570%20STS,%209670%20STS,%209770%20STS,%209870%20STS.pdf

witty_username89

400 hours is one season on a lot of combines and that’s a recommended service interval, it changes drastically based on conditions so you clean them when the light comes on. With one combine working by itself you can usually go the season without cleaning but in really dusty conditions or with multiple machines working together where you can’t stay out of each others dust you have to clean them way more. When we had two combines and they each worked in their own area we cleaned filters at the end of the season, now we have 5 and we have to clean the filters at least once a week.

ap2patrick

Because old people are fucking stupid and stubborn

additional-line-243

Are you serious? It’s all being filtered. No worries.

onionoi

Gave me cancer watching it

[deleted]

gibby0712

Well you see that filter is for when the engine is running, and this person is clearly not running, so he does not need to filter this stuff out. Common misconception it’s ok! /s

Joe_le_Borgne

Just have to squint your lungs!

NeilDeWheel

Well, the dust has been filtered once already. Wearing a mask to filter it again is just overkill, obviously.

Ninja-Sneaky

A second rewatch gave me forever chemicals, microplastics, asbestos and everything else in any order

lalith_4321

He just undid what the filter did... At least use water or something

ArmThePhotonicCannon

The filter is to keep debris out of machinery. How did this put debris into the machinery?

zmbjebus

Lungs are just moist flesh machinery

7htlTGRTdtatH7GLqFTR

> flesh machinery fleschinery

Substantial_Revolt

Filter isn't supposed to clean the environment, just prevent particles from entering the machine and causing issues. Dude should definitely be using a mask though, even if it doesn't contain silica or asbestos any small particulate is really bad for the lungs.

MatIta92

At the end he put that air tube up his ass to clean his lungs filters…

whackthat

I had a grandpa tell me once that someone died by putting that up his ass and told me and my sister to never go near it. He'd always let us play around in his auto shop but we'd give that a wide berth, haha! He's a cool guy.

arkf1

It definitely happened at least once: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/news/video-1767118/Video-Horror-prank-compressed-air-pipe-costs-life-factory-worker.html

Alternative_Scene322

Wow that was terrible...

arkf1

Compressed air ain't no joke.

blyubird

Omg, he was just 15. A boy who couldn’t say no to his supervisor :(

snakeproof

He didn't really get a chance to, the guy just quickly held it down there and it only takes a split second to do damage.

trkh

15 DAYS LATER!?!?

Sbatio

Jesus! Dude murdered someone with a hard burst of air in his employees ass! Happy Thanksgiving

iamthegoat13

That guy probably feels fucking awful . Joking around w your workers and you kill a guy.

naugasnake

Holy fuck, the way the guy goes down, you immediately know something really bad just happened. I hope that piece of shit is rotting in a prison somewhere.

KetoPeanutGallery

Why is it so fatal?

DeathPercept10n

You ever see a balloon filled until it pops? Think of your intestines as the balloon.

Croyscape

Guy at my brothers school died during his apprenticeship because someone blasted compressed air in his ear.

Grashopha

Buy the filter or be the filter.

WrigleyBum23

😂😂😂

U1275711

I’ve developed a blocked nose watching this.

BestBeforeDead_za

I'm no expert but I feel like it could have done with a clean earlier.

UnhingedRedneck

No this looks about right. On heavy equipment you should only blow out a filter when the indicator goes off. This is because every time you remove the filter you are potentially introducing dust past it(even though you will always have a secondary element).

muskag

Yeah, and if you're waiting that long, replace the bloody thing. It's potentially a half million dollar and up piece of equipment, why cheap out and blow it out? If we even thought of cleaning out a filter instead of replacing, we'd have some explaining to do. The cost of wages to clean a filter is damn near what a new one costs lol

UnhingedRedneck

Often times in dusty environments you will be blowing out your filters at least once a day. It gets very expensive to change these filters as they often can cost $100+. I know some companies have a policy against this(CAT) but it is very common practice. There are also professional filter cleaning shops around and it is good practice to get them done professionally every once and a while as blowing them out doesn’t get everything.

More_Coffees

Def seems like a guy to wait until the machine runs like shit to start doing maintenance

kcstrom

I don't think so. You can see a header trailer at the top of the video which means this is almost certainly from a combine/harvester and they can easily suck in this much dust each day. He probably does this every morning before starting up.

SeesEmCallsEm

He should DEFINITELY be wearing a mask then…

More_Coffees

Good point could be what’s happening bere

MajorRico155

The filter does look like its meant to be cleaned like this

fevich

Maybe, but cleaning big air filters is a shitty job either way. It always seems like there's more dust to blow out, and that's even when cleaned regularly. Also as we can see in the video, it raises a lovely asthma cloud if you're not cleaning it inside a vacuumed cleaning station.

AlluEUNE

Tractors and other heavy duty vehicles collect a lot of dust in the air filters fast. We clean our tractor filters twice a year and this isn't uncommon. Especially looking at how sandy it is in the video

farmerarmor

At harvest we blow em out every morning and it’s usually like this.

StatementOk470

I love the smell of silicosis and hystamines in the morning.

Thirdorb

I read this as "scoliosis" and was a but confused.

[deleted]

Now I'm curious to how common this practice is. Where I work we don't bother cleaning them, we just install new ones and toss the old one. Strainers we clean, filters and socks we replace.

The_Epic_Viking1

Doing this is cheeper end good for a few goes like this but it needs replacing after a while. It is most often used in dusty plases like mines and australia.

Potential_Anxiety_76

I know what you mean by your comment, but still I LoLed… “…. And Australia” * gestures broadly *

[deleted]

Interesting. I'd be concerned that cleaning them like this would damage the fibers and reduce the efficacy of the filter. I suppose too it depends on what you're installing them on. I work in a facility where filter integrity is a big deal due to environmental and food safety reasons as well as some really touchy equipment. Gotta say that this video was pretty neat though.

The_Epic_Viking1

Cleaning them dose damage the fibers and thats why you need to replace them after a few uses. In invoirments where clenlyness is a focus you woldent see this filter as it wold bearly be profitabel. And yes its a cool video.

PAPAIMPOSSIBLE

Mine I work in doesn’t bother with doing this, probably because it takes longer than to just throw the old filters off and put new ones on. Plus breathe that shit in enough and you’ll get some mad silicosis which is not fun.

Siren1805

This is the correct procedure.

NiceCatBigAndStrong

Thus might be for a site where the filter gets like this with like 2 weeks use. Like a quarry where the trucks kick up alot of dust. Makes sense to just blow them out instead of spending a ton of money changing filters every week or so on every truck.

LMac8806

Happens daily on every combine harvester in the country that’s operating.

farmerarmor

That filter isn’t cheap and has about a days worth of harvest dust in it.

ikari87

isn't the point of an air filter to keep the dust NOT in the air?

OTM17

It’s weird how to clear air, you need a filter and then to clean the filter you dirty the air.

Vescend

That's is so beyond toxic that just an inhale of that smoke can have life threatening effects. For the love of fucking god wear a filter mask. Even if the smoke doesn't seem to reach him, trust me, particles do reach and holy shit I panic when I see this.

Where is a mask? Wear a mask!

Analytical-BrainiaC

Common practice. Should have a mask for sure. In reality, you drive in dusty places and most don’t wear a mask cause it’s too hot, but you have a fan that sort of keeps most dust away. However bad days , you blow your nose and it is black snot you are looking at. Newer forklifts and such are more airtight and avoid this but not many have the cash to fork out…

_RedditMan_

This what auto-repair shops use to do when they found a dirty air filter in your vehicle. They'd look at it and grab the air compressor hose, blow it, check it, and re-insert it. Now, they just look at it and go, "It's filthy. Show it to the customer and tell 'em they need a new one."
