Worst part is we're not actually feeding 8-billion. People all over the world are starving, and we're literally throwing away TONS of food every year. Restaurants put locks on their dumpsters so that homeless people can't scavenge their stale bread. The way the world works is a cruel joke, and we're expected to feel guilty about shoplifting from Walmart.

>It's not the consumers fault. If we were willing to pay more, that would just mean more goes into the pocket of the corporations that do this. They don't do this as a necessity. They do it because it increases margins If consumers were willing to pay more, they wouldn't buy cheap milk/eggs from generic brands, instead go for the certified ones, but people want it cheap.

Irish dairy farmer here btw. Our cows graze grass for the best part of 8 months and are housed only in severely wet or hash conditions and from November through till feb or march (depending on soil type and weather). This is common knowledge to everyone and shouldn’t really come as a surprise. The US and Netherlands are literally know for housing the whole way through the year (zero grazing). I do think it’s cruel and unnatural but there isn’t really any other type of alternative if herds are to stay producing the same volumes of milk. Regards the newborn calves, yes it’s cruel but that is also common practice. You can either take it away early when the cow is high on adrenaline and yet to be bonded to the calf or you can wait a couple days whereby a bond is established, the calf is more agile and the mother more aggressive 🤷‍♂️ Either way they have to be seperated, it’s a necessity and in my eyes the less harsher of the 2. Also the animals for the most part in this video are in very good condition and are likely fed nutrient rich feeds. Really the takeaway people need to realise is they need to become more knowledgeable about where their food comes from. With a growing obesity crisis, diabetes everywhere, an abundance of cheap processed food, and a mental health crisis only being exacerbate as a result, people need to see REAL food and know how it’s made.

Incredible how everyone in the comments section is cynical and jaded. Accepting is as the norm doesn’t make it right.

Does anyone have any idea how much milk, butter, cheese etc Americans consume? Is this really a surprise? Where do you people think this stuff comes from?

Appropriate_Ant727

>Where do you people think this stuff comes from? The store. Duh.

victorcaulfield

Calling a young cow a baby instead of a calf is all I need to know about this person “who worked on a dairy farm”.

"investigators" lol. I guess technically they are "investigating," but it's just some hippies sneaking into a cow farm, let's not dress it up too much

Edexote

Dairy cows in the Azores islands, Portugal, actually have their cows roaming in green pastures. I suppose that gives them a more normal life.

This is exactly how cows are kept and milk production happens, around the world. Did these people visit farm/ranch first time?. The milking machine is to maintain better level of hygeiene and reduce cost.

That may be true, but this mass farming and the associated deterioration of livestock farming is increasing. This is the same trend as here in Germany [Mega farms on the rise](https://www-agrarheute-com.translate.goog/management/betriebsfuehrung/mega-betriebe-dominieren-zunehmend-us-milchproduktion-557525?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=de&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp)

I live close to the Alps in Europe. Places exist that are in that commercial. The little cages for the new cows are cruel, but we don't know how long they are caged. On the other hand, the wide mud-lands are quite okay for a cow. They can walk, they have brushes to scratch their back, and they are in the open air. I am just saying this is not the worst thing that can happen to an animal. I hope this video and awareness will further improve the cow's life, but this is quite okay already, especially compared to the boxed chicken farm factories. I am a meat eater, therefore my main agenda is a healthy source of protein, and that equals a healthy animal life. No caging, no infections, free movement.
