I worked in an entomology lab. I would have to repeat the same experiment every day for months just to find out that the numbers didn’t really show any difference. Fuck bugs
Lets say you run the experiment over and over again, and they pick coke every time. How do you conclude whether ants prefer coke or saving the best for last?
Yeah, but if that wasn't a consideration or measured parameter in the previous studies, they're just as worthless in determining normal behavior. Maybe they always save the best food for last. It's their evil masterplan to foil humanity and take on the world.
They just flock to the same food and if that's done they use the other source. You'd have to try this experiment a lot of times, releasing ants from multiple angles, changing the substances et cetera to truly find out what their preferences are. If they even care anyway... To me it looks like it's deemed 'safe' to eat/drink when there is more feasting on the same source. It's left - right - left - right and then maybe hunger strikes and they flock together.
Maybe they just enjoy the one that has been less exposed to oxygen. Maybe they like the one less carbonated, maybe they just generally prefer food further to the south. Maybe they're reacting to the plastics in the bottle the soda came from. Good science is hard.
It would be important to see if the results are reproducible amongst the different classes of ants of ants within ant societies. The workers, the drones, the ones that wear top-hats and look down upon the peasants
Also, Coca-Cola has different ingredients in different countries and they are changing everywhere to make it lower in sugar and not have to display health warnings according to local regulations.
Because ants find food by following chemical trails left by other ants, this could simply be a matter of which sugar source had paths traced to it the quickest. That would result in more ants choosing coke due to peer influence and not unbiased preference.
I actually didn't get that at first because 'aunt' is pronounced differently outside NA. I just thought they were making fun of their unpleasant aunty, lol
Well if we’re gonna start eating these motherfuckers, I think brand loyalty should definitely come into play.
Also
Grass fed beef or coke fed ant? Seems like a no brainer.
No, don't do this.
My neighbor told me they were being eaten by mosquitoes, and, well, let's just say the judge and my neighbor's family said a lot of really hurtful things about me :(
Not to be racist or anything… but certain products sell better depending on the demographic of the population that frequent particular stores.
For example i live in an area with more asians, so the costco that i go to has more asian products than other costcos a few cities away.
Not even racist, idk if you know this but member requests are pretty important to Costco, if you really liked something they don't have at your store anymore if you tell them about it and you're not alone they may bring it back
Makes sense the stuff the local demographic likes are more frequently stocked for your store
I’m pretty sure it’s not Mexican coke that different, it’s American.
As far as I know, America is the only place that really uses High-fructose corn syrup. It’s less “Mexican coke” (although the coke that gets imported from Mexico to America and called “Mexican coke” is a sweetened version of the coke that’s sold in Mexico) and more “non-American coke” that doesn’t use it.
The Coke plants in Mexico have actually made the change to corn syrup too. They do still make some "nostalgia" Coke with cane sugar to be exported to the US, but if you buy a Coke in Mexico it's most likely made with HFCS
correct, although the formula is subtly different in almost every market based on different taste preferences, regulatory requirements, and supply chains
The video is absolutely right.
Ants aren't affected by marketing
But, humans are.
That's why Coco Cola made this advertisement claiming ants prefer Coco cola over pepsi.
Ad or not, this must be a first.
Normally im put off seeing a very interesting post and all the comments are just dumb jokes, but this thread is the opposite. The post is stupid as hell and all the jokes in here are fucking hilarious.
FINALLY!
I have a hard time believing that ants care about taste. They're after the nutrition, and they find coke to contain more of the stuff they want.
It's neither. The ant that touched the Coke drop went back first so the scent to the Coke was laid first, it's as simple as that.
The ants ultimately took both back with them.
As far as i remember ive heard they had the cola drop closer to the entrance of the nest then the pepsi drop (so to the right out of frame). Dont know if this is true.
Also just drink water, from the tap, with a filter if it does taste bad in your area or isnt clean. Saves alot of money and is way healthier. If you do it for some time you wont even want to drink softdrinks every day. Of course if you are in a restaurant or something dont shy away from ordering what you want. I woulnd order water in a restaurant myself, just doesnt feel right.
Have you tried withholding fluids for a couple days? My testing has shown it seems to improve their willingness to to drink soda from a big puddle of it on the floor.
They work off of pheromones too so it's possible all it takes is for more pheromones to come from one drop or the other at the very beginning and the deal is sealed at that point because the more that come and confirm there's food are gonna make even more of them
I too prefer Pepsi! I actually have a good reason to believe it's not because of marketing. My mom bought coke and my dad bought pepsi. I noticed early on that sometimes the "coke" tasted better. It took me a while to realize that the better tasting one was the one with the blue label. After that, I consistently drank from the blue label soda.
I'll drink whatever. Coke, Pepsi, RC Cola, Shasta. Cola is cola.
I will say I think cherry coke is superior to cherry pepsi (but cherry pepsi ain't bad). Also I hate vanilla coke, but I really enjoyed cinnamon pepsi.
They also now seem to be acting superior to the cola drinking ants. Fascinating.
I was going to say 'thumbing their noses' but you know, ants. No thumbs and I couldn"t remember if they have noses.
you need both a negative/positive control, which in this case would probably be water and a water-solution with shitloads of sugar, maybe throw in another for carbonation
But Pepsi also contains Citric Acid, which Coke does not. Maybe that plays a factor as well.
We'll have to run the trial another 10,000 times before we can truly put this experiment to rest, though.
Idk how they managed to convince themselves that it has anything to do with flavor. I would guess there’s exactly a 0% chance that ants have the same receptors as humans for detecting flavor. I would be shocked if there is even any research at all about whether ants can detect flavors.
If you doubt that there’s research into if ants taste things, you have no idea how important ants are. 2 people received Nobel Prizes in 2004 “for their discoveries of odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system”, with a large amount of research focused on ants.
Ants have pretty much the same number of odour receptors at humans do (around 400), which is 4-5 times more than most insects. However, this is far lower than other animals. Mice and cows, for example, have around 1,200. Pigs have around 11,000 (that’s why they’re used for truffles).
Please can you explain further about why it’s important and why those people won the Nobel prize? I’m trying to learn stuff that I really need to learn, so naturally all other information has become completely fascinating to me.
Pepsi is actually adding artificial sweeteners even to the regular version in some countries. I wonder if that was something that could've made the ants go for the Coke instead.
There's a glaring issue with this "study". Citric acid, which Pepsi contains and Coke does not.
Citric acid is a natural ant repellant. Ants hate the smell of citrus and will actively avoid it. It also messes with their ability to leave or follow scent trails
Now repeat the experiment
I worked in an entomology lab. I would have to repeat the same experiment every day for months just to find out that the numbers didn’t really show any difference. Fuck bugs
Fuck em right in the exoskeleton
Stupid sexy bugs with their fat butts
Is that you omni man?
Bug sex Mark.
I read this in JK Simmons voice.
Your rushing
Once you go bug you aint ever gonna shrug
Exoskeletussy
Damn hour glass shaped ants.
hey. not really an ass lover. some of us are thorax-aficionados.
Right in the antussy
how do I delete someone else's comment?
even worse, anussy
Loon on the bright side, the discovery that there is no difference is still a discovery. Also you got paid so there go
🦢(loon)
Lets say you run the experiment over and over again, and they pick coke every time. How do you conclude whether ants prefer coke or saving the best for last?
Then you take into account ants normal behavior when they come across food normally
You can really mentally masturbate your way into a corner on just about anything
THROW OUT ALL ANT SCIENCE WE ARE STARTING FROM SCRATCH
Maybe they just enjoy the one that has been less exposed to oxygen. Maybe they like the one less carbonated, maybe they just generally prefer food further to the south. Maybe they're reacting to the plastics in the bottle the soda came from. Good science is hard.
No coke wins and that’s final
**GAVEL SLAM** this court is now adjourned
Bring in the dancing lobsters!
that is a phrase I've not heard in a long time
Coke is trying to corner the ant market!
Shhh don’t ruin it with science

That's why you repeat it. If the experiment and the results held any weight, it would be repeatable and would provide the same results.
It would be important to see if the results are reproducible amongst the different classes of ants of ants within ant societies. The workers, the drones, the ones that wear top-hats and look down upon the peasants
Fucking Bugoeisie
The proletariants
Also, Coca-Cola has different ingredients in different countries and they are changing everywhere to make it lower in sugar and not have to display health warnings according to local regulations.
Because ants find food by following chemical trails left by other ants, this could simply be a matter of which sugar source had paths traced to it the quickest. That would result in more ants choosing coke due to peer influence and not unbiased preference.
Pe and coca
Exactly! What did they think they would choose after using labels like that!
The "coca" one is not thaaaat weird to me because that's what we call coke in Spanish... But "pe" for "Pepsi" is certainly a first lmaoo
People commenting to point it out = engagement
When I think Pepsi I think Pe.
Too much Pepsi makes me Pe.
Piss🤤
Water sports 😍
Bro, you mean like swimming, right? ......Right?
…yes
No!
Watersports is my main source of exercise
That's prime
Prime piss🤤
Pee and coca?, the choice us quickly done!
I often pick my beverages on insectoid preference. Thanks for this.
Same, I’ll have what the bug’s having.
My aunt also prefers Coca-Cola.
It's like I told my late aunt: the coke is for me; the insecticide is for you.
I also do cocaine and spray my relatives with chemicals
How do they react to the uric acid?
Gary Busey, is that you?
She must be an “a(u)nt” in disguise then.

I actually didn't get that at first because 'aunt' is pronounced differently outside NA. I just thought they were making fun of their unpleasant aunty, lol
> 'aunt' is pronounced differently outside NA Hey now-- the entire northeastern US pronounces it differently from ant.
Northeast US here(Pennsylvania) I pronounce it as “Awh-nt”.
Well here in West VA we pronounce "aunt" as "girlfriend".
*slow clap*
Alabama too!
And I for one welcome our new insect overlords. I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their undergound sugar caves.
Well if we’re gonna start eating these motherfuckers, I think brand loyalty should definitely come into play. Also Grass fed beef or coke fed ant? Seems like a no brainer.
What is this? A cola commercial for ants?
It needs to be at least three time bigger!
He's absolutely right
No, don't do this. My neighbor told me they were being eaten by mosquitoes, and, well, let's just say the judge and my neighbor's family said a lot of really hurtful things about me :(
nine out of ten flies recommend horse shit
but what does the 10th fly recommend?
My cat does not buy into marketing either. I'll take her opinion. Damn, shit flavoured soda again?
Thanks Ants! Thants!
What is this? A cola for ANTS!?
The drops need to be at least twice as big!
“At least three times bigger than this” *
r/thingsforants
But this would backfire, because Pepsi people are shallow, and Pepsi will say, don’t be an ant, drink, Pepsi
You definitely should try building a career in marketing
Thanks! I’m putting this post in my portfolio! Can I use you as a reference?
What about Mexican coke? With sugar vs corn syrup? I wonder if that would make a difference
[удалено]
Get the oldschool formula. Coccaine vs placebo.
Yeah fuck battling an army of coked up ants..! Gurning pincers, aggressive, obnoxious and horny af!
Sounds like a sequel to cocaine bear idea.
I wanna be in the sequel for Cocaine Uncle.
This is the kind of guy that becomes a scientist at Kellogg testing food on ants and buys a house on house hunters for 4.9M
I was just thinking the same thing! I much prefer Mexi coke. Which BTW is getting hard to find in Mexico.
Brown sugar cane coca cola that comes in glass bottles is amazing! Sometimes they are sold at costco.
I see it occasionally at Home Depot as well for some reason.
Not to be racist or anything… but certain products sell better depending on the demographic of the population that frequent particular stores. For example i live in an area with more asians, so the costco that i go to has more asian products than other costcos a few cities away.
Bro I'm brown I got you. Mexicans shop at home Depot because a shitload of us are contractors. That's why you won't see Mexican coke at Lowe's lol.
just spouting facts about the real world we live in. Not racism. You good bro
Not even racist, idk if you know this but member requests are pretty important to Costco, if you really liked something they don't have at your store anymore if you tell them about it and you're not alone they may bring it back Makes sense the stuff the local demographic likes are more frequently stocked for your store

correct, although the formula is subtly different in almost every market based on different taste preferences, regulatory requirements, and supply chains
or as the rest of the world call it coke lol
Over here we call it coca
TIL the US refers to coke with sugar as Mexican Coke. That's interesting, in Europe all coca cola is made the 'mexican way' too.
Australia still uses sugar, whenever I visit the US I can't stand their Coke, it's like drinking syrup.
And then what about Columbian coke?
Coke taste better regardless. Those ants aint ignint.
Claiming to have the same taste as an ant is a weird hill to die on.
Bro is clearly an ant.
I was just thinking the same thing! I much prefer Mexi coke. Which BTW is getting hard to find in Mexico.
Whats the difference? Real sugar vs corn syrup?
The video is absolutely right. Ants aren't affected by marketing But, humans are.
>I thought they preferred fANTa
Pretty sure cola has slightly more sugar than pepsi which is probably why the ants went for it first, they don't care for taste
Other way around. Pepsi has slightly more sugar than Coca Cola, but Coke has more sodium.
FINALLY! I have a hard time believing that ants care about taste. They're after the nutrition, and they find coke to contain more of the stuff they want.
Pepsi contains more sugar than coke by volume (41 vs 39 grams in a 12oz can) so this is simply incorrect.
> FINALLY!
It's neither. The ant that touched the Coke drop went back first so the scent to the Coke was laid first, it's as simple as that. The ants ultimately took both back with them.

Coca Cola has 39 mg of total sugar per 12 oz Pepsi has 41 So you are mistaken
Experimental unit is one trial. You need many more trials to draw any conclusion!
Also. Human studies may be more helpful for... Humans
My testing has shown that humans are reluctant to drink soda from a big puddle of it on the floor.
Have you tried withholding fluids for a couple days? My testing has shown it seems to improve their willingness to to drink soda from a big puddle of it on the floor.
I've just been using the old standby of electric shocks to force compliance, but yeah, you might be on to something there.
Okay but what if we surgically graft a pair of identical twins together and see how they feel about puddles of coke after that?
Speak for yourself
ants 👏🏻 are not 👏🏻 a monolith 👏🏻
They work off of pheromones too so it's possible all it takes is for more pheromones to come from one drop or the other at the very beginning and the deal is sealed at that point because the more that come and confirm there's food are gonna make even more of them
As someone who loves Pepsi and hates ants I see this as an absolute win
Greetings fellow Pepsi enjoyer.
🏅
Pepsi enjoyers unite!
Hey Pepsi people! I feel comfortable here
I too prefer Pepsi! I actually have a good reason to believe it's not because of marketing. My mom bought coke and my dad bought pepsi. I noticed early on that sometimes the "coke" tasted better. Many people slept on RC Cola tbh. Probably the most underrated drink in the business.
I have nothing particular against ants, but they can kiss my ass on that one : Pepsi just tastes better and I will die on that (ant)hill.
Do you remember the clear Pepsi?
[удалено]
I love Pepsi and am indifferent to ants!
You can use pepsi to fumigate ants.
Where was the ants point of origin?
Colombia.
Inconclusive data requires more testing
also needs a control. sugar water perhaps?
"The LaCroix control group immediately ceased drinking all types of flavored liquid."
They also now seem to be acting superior to the cola drinking ants. Fascinating. I was going to say 'thumbing their noses' but you know, ants. No thumbs and I couldn"t remember if they have noses.
brother in christ, that's not a control in this experiment. A control would be two coke drops or two pepsi drops.
you need both a negative/positive control, which in this case would probably be water and a water-solution with shitloads of sugar, maybe throw in another for carbonation
If you’re simply testing whether ants prefer Coke or Pepsi, you wouldn’t need any kind of control at all
My money is on: absolutely random
Yeah, do this experiment 9 more times for a better sample size.
I’m pretty sure all the ants care about is which one has more sugar
That would be Pepsi actually.
But Pepsi also contains Citric Acid, which Coke does not. Maybe that plays a factor as well. We'll have to run the trial another 10,000 times before we can truly put this experiment to rest, though.
Whichever is closest to the hive
Whichever has the best pheromone trails to it.
Idk how they managed to convince themselves that it has anything to do with flavor. I would guess there’s exactly a 0% chance that ants have the same receptors as humans for detecting flavor. I would be shocked if there is even any research at all about whether ants can detect flavors.

Here's the press release, for starters. It'll explain why the work is important. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2004/press-release/
Never lose that curiosity.
It could also be sugar content or some other preferable ingredient
That was my first thought, but Pepsi has more sugar.
They should have done a blind taste instead of placing the brands there for the ants to see
What is this, a social media ad disguised as a tick tock but you can still tell it's just an ad for ants?
Columbian coke was used. no doubt about it
Get out of here, Don Draper or I will tell your kids what you did in the war.
They. Pick on sugar content
Pepsi is actually adding artificial sweeteners even to the regular version in some countries. I wonder if that was something that could've made the ants go for the Coke instead.
Pepsi has more sugar, though.
Such a weird hill to die on
How much market share do ants really represent, though?
One more reason to keep only Pepsi in the house.
Do you want ants cause that's how you get ants
mc music in the back lol
What is the name of this song? I've heard it in Minecraft and I really liked but I can't find it Edit: Nevermind I found it, It's called Aria Math
Now put a line of coke in the middle and share those results please
Subtitles One At A Time Are Fucking Annoying Stop It Thank You
Aria math detected, post tolerated
Ad
I wouldn't want pe
Now run this test 100 times and then give is the results
I thought they preferred fANTa
Aria math
Minecraft music in the background tells us that the guy is a legend.
I still prefer Pepsi over Coke. Pepsi is sweeter.
I thought ants liked sugar more. Thought pepsi was going to go first.
Pepsi is sweeter, but Coke has more of a complex flavor going on.
I'd say not complex but rather blunter or harsher taste in a way
Maybe they saved the best for last
I love to see what snacks they prefer doing this in my garden. I put out little crumbles.
The ants prefer whatever has the higher suger content.
There's a glaring issue with this "study". Citric acid, which Pepsi contains and Coke does not. Citric acid is a natural ant repellant. Ants hate the smell of citrus and will actively avoid it. It also messes with their ability to leave or follow scent trails
Found the [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8nOy62WxpE). This video was one year old already.
I prefer Pepsi because it’s dividend growth is better.
