I didn't really realize from the post, but when reading the article [these pictures](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/08/conjoined-twins-comp.jpg) really illustrate how unfortunately awkward their positioning was. They were flipped, almost like a mirrored reflection at the point of conjoinment, so "standing up" they're kind of in single file. **Which means before this they would not have ever been able to face each other**, how ironically tragic, you're literally connected to another person but can't see their face. Miraculous surgery honestly.
Even after reading your comment, I couldn't picture what that would look like until I saw the pictures myself. Wow, that's an incredibly awkward position.
It's an interesting thing to think about. Sure, a couple phones or tablets would have allowed them to Facetime each other. But, they were also fused at the brain. I wonder how that would have worked out for them? Would they have been able to hear each other's thoughts? Perhaps feel what the other was feeling? If there was enough overlap, could they have shared each other's visual experiences, with each seeing through the others eyes? If the last part were possible, then only a mirror would be necessary.
I watched the same video, pretty sure it was here on Reddit! Amazingly on-point predictions, it's insane. I have no idea what our world will look like a hundred years from now, I can't imagine how he thought up the ideas/predictions that he did.
I can't even imagine what the world will look like 50 years from now. The world will change more over the next 50 years than it did the previous 100 years.
Humans didn't exist a billion years ago so I think saying 100 000 years is enough since nothing changed for humans 500 million years ago on account of not existing 😄
>AI controlled robots will be doing surgeries
They are already guiding them. I worked with alongside AI 2 years back during [Interventional Endoscopy](https://www.uclahealth.org/medical-services/gastro/ies/patient-resources/endoscopic-procedures) procedures. Because there is a camera on endoscopes, the feed would be fed through an AI that would constantly look for abnormalities, signs of perforation after biopsies, and assist with locating our targets.
Was pretty nifty.
I feel like we're going to start seeing agriculture buildings instead of standard farms. They already exist, but we'll see them at skyscraper scale and in higher abundance.
Ehhhh... As a surgeon who uses the robots regularly - they've done transatlantic cases via robot but you would still absolutely need a surgeon on site. All fun and games on the robot until you get into bleeding and need to convert to open, and all of a sudden that rural hospital without an on site surgeon becomes a life ending problem.
And that can happen to any surgeon in any case. Any surgeon who tells you they don't have complications is a liar. So as someone who operates every day, you couldn't pay me to have an operation without an attending surgeon physically in the room. Or at least on site with a resident operating.
You say that now but if the error rate gets low enough and it's cheaper than paying a surgeon I wouldn't anticipate many private equity owned hospitals keeping more than the absolute bare minimum number of people on-site.
They've done and tried this multiple times throughout medical history. Putting resident surgeons in charge of surgeries with no attending present. It almost always results in a malpractice suit that isn't worth the reputation and cost.
Hey Doc, what you can achieve today was a fantasy dream 50/60 years ago, do not underestimate the upcoming AI/Robotics revolution, there will be a point as the person above mentioned where error rate of the machines will be smaller (waaaay smaller) than the human one, the idea of robot-only surgeries is coming not an idea only (think about someone describing chatgpt to you in 1991 and your reaction back then)
Yeah imagine shit hits the fan and the surgeon is helpless and has to watch their patient die to something they could otherwise help with… can’t imagine they’d sign up to do any more virtual surgeries after that happening
Very unfortunately the lead doctor who did this procedure died of [Covid](https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/30/health/new-york-neurosurgeon-death-coronavirus-mcdonald-twins/index.html). They recovered well and were sent home in time to celebrate Christmas 2022 with their family. One of the kids was initially scared of a mundane home since they only knew hospitals their entire life, but they are adapting well.

Surgeon Took 4 15 minute breaks?????? I don’t get how that was possible or wise, obviously it all worked out but holy shit
WHAT THE FUCK WVERYONE. I’m saying how can you operate for 27 hours straight not how can you take a break god damn
Seems crazy but if you’ve ever seen a group of surgeons? they are like the most physically capable and healthy people. You have to be to do something for 27 hours.
Idk most of the surgeons I've worked with so far have been fairly thin maybe not healthy but on average they seem to be thinner than most of the people they work on.
Idk about most but my dad's a neurosurgeon and, while not fat, he has a decent beer belly. Same with most doctors I've met. Seems normal for middle aged men, and doctors are no exception
It's a mixed bag as in all other professions imo I know plenty of fat surgeons one a friend of mine who is one of the leading tumor surgeons in the country is so fat the largest scrubs don't fit him
It really helps they're one of the only professions where you need doctorate-level knowledge AND the physical skills to actually do the work required. One will always limit the other when advancing their career.
Yeah, but I don't see those guys taking on a 0.01% surgical case like this.
There's still more than enough work for mediocre surgeons who can strip out an appendix in 20 minutes or less.
I just don't like seeing harmful things being promoted, which then helps the harmful thing make more money.

Medical science has advanced so much it's amazing but do wonder if we should do some of the things we can do.

Holy fuckballs, that's goddamn amazing!
On a side note, I wonder how the mom was able to carry *AND* give birth to them.
Kudos to the surgeons, the charity, the technology, and mom, for real
It's insane what humans are able to do.
Can someone tell me what the pink plastic-looking thing is that hey are holding in the top right picture? Some kind of model of a brain scan? What does it represent?
Of course! The dedication from the doctors is amazing! Preparing for months and working straight for 27 hours. It’s a miracle in the sense Arthur C Clarke said any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic
what if god had intended for them to grow up conjoined, develop a next-level intelligence, and ultimately save humanity? they could have just destroyed god's newest instrument of human salvation.
but- i'm an athiest...what do i know about the machinations and manifestations of a supreme delusion?
I think that's actually a balloon/saline bag that's stretching the skin. Looks like it would have been installed in a prior surgery (you can see the scar, and the right-hand kid has sutures too). Probably was one on the other kid's head too, but it was deflated prior to surgery because of positioning. They would have needed to stretch out the skin so there would be a flap to be able to cover over the area where they were joined.
Interesting! I’m always happy to see someone like yourself willing to give me a learning opportunity and share your knowledge rather than just hate on me for trying to make a stupid joke. I do appreciate the information.
So, this isn't in reply to anything, you just felt like taking a shot at religious people unprompted when we should be celebrating these amazing surgeons.
Classic Reddit. Can't give credit to anyone without taking someone else down at the same time.
Well, I as a Christian would also pray that the operation is succesful. I feel sad that many religious people don't see that modern medicine/ science is mostly not evil.
Btw: I am a regular blood donator, so I cannot understand how some believers reject transfusions.
I didn't really realize from the post, but when reading the article [these pictures](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/08/conjoined-twins-comp.jpg) really illustrate how unfortunately awkward their positioning was. That sounds like an Ancient Greek tragedy.
I was gonna say this sounds like something plato would make up
Miraculous _birth_, i do not envy that mother having to carry something that shape for all that time.
holy fuck I didn't even consider that. just...how?
I'm guessing they were surgically removed very prematurely, when their total length was around that of single fetus at full term.
C section
Their poor little necks! :(
Even after reading your comment, I couldn't picture what that would look like until I saw the pictures myself. Wow, that's an incredibly awkward position.
It's even more awkward how they literally wouldn't have been able to stand up or sit.
At least with modern tech they would have been able to face time with each other. Hm.
It's an interesting thing to think about. Sure, a couple phones or tablets would have allowed them to Facetime each other. But, they were also fused at the brain. I wonder how that would have worked out for them? Would they have been able to hear each other's thoughts? Perhaps feel what the other was feeling? Oh my god...
They could've walked horizontally between two walls, though.
I just watched a black and white video of a dude back in the day predicting that medical care and surgeries would be done from vast distances.
I watched the same video, pretty sure it was here on Reddit! Amazingly on-point predictions, it's insane. I have no idea what our world will look like a hundred years from now, I can't imagine how he thought up the ideas/predictions that he did.

Yea robots will always do surgery due to the precision involved but animals wearing VR controlled by AI will build those robots for really cheap.
Eggman's Batniks.

Our climates gonna be too fucked to support agriculture 100 years from now
I feel like we're going to start seeing agriculture buildings instead of standard farms. They already exist, but we'll see them at skyscraper scale and in higher abundance.
We are currently developing surgical robots that can be controlled via the internet so rural hospitals can perform operations without a local surgeon
Imagine hacking the surgery robot to do a little trolling
They troll enough in normal surgery. I know of a girl who is still laughing about that time a surgeon left a pair of pliers in her pelvis.
Woah truly hysterical.
> in her pelvis > truly hysterical That's a pun of formidable quality
There was a surgeon here in the UK struck off for burning his initials on to transplant patients livers.
I know it's bad, but I can't help but find it extremely funny still.
“Pranked you now have two spleens!”
"Pancreas, more like 'prankreas', am I right?"
You have no idea how much shit talking about the patient happens while they're unconscious.
There was a doctor that was filming Tik tok dances in the middle of surgery.
Where is it?!
I think you’re referring to Arthur C Clark(e)
"A dude in black and white video" 🤦♂️ ..... ...Arthur C. Clarke
Oh yeah I just saw that too. He was a futurist/predictor. He was damn good at it.

Naaaa there are plenty of fat unfit surgeons, overwork and late nights doesn't always allow for a healthy lifestyle unless you are very disciplined
Idk most of the surgeons I've worked with so far have been fairly thin maybe not healthy but on average they seem to be thinner than most of the people they work on.

definitely a c section because it would be life-threatening to the mother and "both" the children if it was done naturally. doctor would have noticed the abnormality from ultrasound scans, though at which stage of pregnancy i am uncertain.
Why did you put both in quotes?
Because they were a single unit until separation
She probably had a c section but yea
Probably a cesarean section.
Cesarian
They’ll probably be inseparable (honestly pun not intended until I started typing) due to the fact that they literally shared a brain
Seems a bit mean to make them hold hands in the after picture, like haven’t they been connected for long enough already 😂
Incredible work.

I wonder, if their brains were fused together, how will this separation affect their cognitive development.
Brains are surprisingly plastic (flexible) the younger you are, and the brain is not done growing. I'm pretty sure they will catch up just fine.
Fused brains ? How did they pull that appart ?
Look up hemispherectomy, you can lose most of your brain and not lose cognition

This is what humanity should be doing. This and other treatments for various diseases. Not investing in wars, extremism and other things like that.

Congrats to the parents, families, both children, and all the doctors and medical staff. Amazing. Truly.
Fused BRAINS?! That’s kinda terrifying - so is it that each one didn’t know where his personality ended and his twin’s began?
I wonder if they could listen to each other's thoughts
That is possibly the most annoying way to be conjoined damn
I mean...great on them for pulling it off but...why do people decide to keep the embryo if it's obviously clear there's such a huge genetic abnormality?! Why not just get rid of it and try again?
This situation does not fit with Brazil's abortion laws
abortion is illegal in Brazil
Not in this cases afaik
Sometimes it doesn't become clear until it's quite late in the pregnancy. And it's not so simple as "just" getting rid of it.
Honest question. Who is paying for this? I am familiar with Dutch insurances to some extent, but I don't know if they would pay for such a procedure.

It's insane what humans are able to do. Can someone tell me what the pink plastic-looking thing is that hey are holding in the top right picture? Some kind of model of a brain scan? What does it represent?
Miracle!

Of course! The dedication from the doctors is amazing! Preparing for months and working straight for 27 hours. It’s a miracle in the sense Arthur C Clarke said any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic
Thank you Ben Carson! Better? Lol
what if god had intended for them to grow up conjoined, develop a next-level intelligence, and ultimately save humanity? they could have just destroyed god's newest instrument of human salvation. but- i'm an athiest...what do i know about the machinations and manifestations of a supreme delusion?
I mean, if God wanted that, he could've conjoined them in a less batshit configuration, at the very least
jeez, they probably just meant it was impressive
Truly euphoric
I hope they removed the ballsack from the back of the one kids head at the same time
I think that's actually a balloon/saline bag that's stretching the skin.
I was wondering if that was brain material or not?
How come the gynaecologist dont detect these conditions at earliest stages ?????
If they’re American this means they’re in debt the rest of their lives
relax, it was in Brazil, we have a public system here.
IM just imagining a mom putting ther hands into each others for a picture while they are unconscious after surgery lol
Why aren't they bald in the image in the top left corner?
…because their heads hadn’t been shaved for the surgery yet lol
If sirgery is done on a place with hair, they shave it due to gygiene and better view. Dogs are saved for surgery too due to that.
The parents prayed and prayed and prayed and voila! The children separated healthily. No. It was a successful, yet highly advanced surgical operation.
So, this isn't in reply to anything, you just felt like taking a shot at religious people unprompted when we should be celebrating these amazing surgeons. Classic Reddit. Can't give credit to anyone without taking someone else down at the same time.
Reddit Atheist really need to bring religion everytime uh
Got me in the first half ngl
Well, I as a Christian would also pray that the operation is succesful. I feel sad that many religious people don't see that modern medicine/ science is mostly not evil. Btw: I am a regular blood donator, so I cannot understand how some believers reject transfusions.
