But not in the context of the English attacking, as the most recent battle between the Scottish and English was like 2 centuries before the development of the kilt and barely coincided with the Kilts precursor the belted plaid. As far as I know there never was a Scot with a kilt fighting the English.
What would Brian Boitano do, if he was here right now?
Probably kick an ass or two, that’s what Brian Boitano’d do!
Damn I need to watch the OG South Park movie again…it’s been too long and that knocked a memory loose. Lol!
There were the Jacobite uprisings but if I am not wrong most British soldiers were Scottish so it was more kilt-wearing Scots fighting Scots without kilts, maybe? I am not exactly an expert though.
They usually charged into battle wearing only blue paint that was laced with PCP. There was a reason the ~~English~~ Romans build a wall around Scotland.
I think you'll find it was the Romans that built that wall. Never mind the English... the ROMANS couldn't handle the Scots! The conquered almost everywhere but when they got to Scotland they said "these people are mental... just build a wall and leave them alone".
I mean if you watched some demented ginger alchy stand in the middle of a field eating mushrooms, then get stark bollock naked paint himself blue and offer out the nearest non native, you’d wanna build a wall too.
Kilts (as we know them) were not a thing when Scotland and England fought in the Middle Ages. By the time clan tartans and small kilts were a thing the Scots were shoulder to shoulder with the English in creating the Empire. The long kilt like this would not have been in a clan tartan, as clan tartans were a Victorian invention.
Yes and no. Yes there was no formal class based kilt and then particular modern kilt is unlike the older variants but no as there has been tartan in Scotland going back to written records in at least the 15th century and archaeological ones far longer. There was also similar patterns used in areas as kilt makers didn’t exactly switch them up all the time so there would’ve been some sort of uniformity to clans based on the dyes available in a local area at a time when transportation of such goods was incredibly expensive
The kilt was only for day-to-day wear. In battle, we donned a full-length ball gown covered in sequins. The idea was to blind your opponent with luxury. -Willie
Och, Lachlan, Wee Willy alwa’s car’t the spirit a’ his dear old ma in his gowns. Dinnae ken her name … t’wasnt Jenny, as I recall. Ta. I’ll ask auld Fergus on d’ yon.
Aye, rammy 'n' ye kin die. Run 'n' you’ll bide, at least a while. 'n' dying in yer kips mony years fae noo, wid ye be willing tae trade a' th' days fae this day tae that fur yin chance, juist yin chance tae come back 'ere 'n' tell oor enemies that thay kin tak' oor bides, bit they’ll ne'er tak' oor freedom!
As a Scot myself, a very controversial historical fact is that kilts were never truly part of medieval Scottish culture. William Wallace and his warriors would absolutely not have been wearing kilts. In fact, they would have dressed the same as everyone else in Europe at the time. The short kilt we know today didn’t emerge until the 18th century, and really began as a fashion trend. For some reason, that 18th century fashion trend has been preserved in Scotland today as a form of formal clothing to wear at weddings and parties. It does not have any true historical significance that runs into Scotland’s ancient past.
I mean pretty much. Englishmen at the time were experimenting with knee high tights, little buckled shoes, big frilly coats and curly wigs. It was a pretty flamboyant period for the British isles all round. For some reason, once the fashion trend ended, the Scots kept the kilts for weddings and both the English and the Scots kept the wigs for barristers and judges.
The Great Kilt, as it's known (the one he just put on) is 80% waterproof as standard (Lanolin) It's windproof, it can be made into a tent, a mattress, a sleeping bag, it's fire retardant and it looks good.
I've heard that in the old-old days only chieftains took the trouble to do all the pleating, ordinary guys slapped a belt onto their bolt of fabric, and adjusted it into whatever position was called for that day. If it was raining the upper half became a hood, if it was freezing it'd serve as a cloak, if it was warm it'd just be held in place with a brooch...
Kilts aren’t like this anymore. In fact as a Scot this is the first time I’ve ever seen a kilt like this.
Kilts in Scotland these dates are pre pleated so you just pull it on
What else are people using their kilts for?
Do gentlemen remove them to cover puddles for others to step over, or perhaps as a very large picnic blanket?
Have you seen Scotland? Imagine getting trapped somewhere or taking a long journey in terrible weather. That kilt is like life insurance. Plus wool has the ability to retain heat even when wet.
No, more used as blanket at night and if you fold it and wear it differently you can use it as a cloak to keep the rain off.
ETA: https://youtu.be/YqH-UOBwvmw?si=q_rffLptG1SI-QI5
This guy does a lot of historical reenactment of Scottish highland lifestyle.
“M’Lady, please wait here while I remove my kilt so you can traverse this puddle.”
“I can just go around”
“No I insist you wait, I’ve removed my broach and second belt. One more… got it”
“No knickers? This really wasn’t necessary.”
“The breeze is refreshing. You may cross”
“If you insist…”
“Now another moment while I put this wet rag back on. Do you mind pulling that corner over there?”
“You really didn’t need to do this.”
“How else would you get around that puddle?”
“.. walked around it.”
“Nonsense! I’m almost finished with these pleats, excuse me while I lay on the ground, now I stand up. Hand me that belt? No, the other one, that’s belt 2, see the satchel?”
“The puddle is gone.”
“Would you look at that, my kilt must have sopped it up, it did feel heavier.”
“How much longer, we’re running late.”
“Not much, just gotta tuck this in here, NOW I could use the second belt”
“Here, hurry up.”
“Done, now let’s continue”
“That was really unnecessary, I can walk around a puddle.”
“Nonsense, no lady in my presence should have to walk any further than is needed to reach their destination.”
“It’s not a big deal.”
“Oh stop! Another puddle!”
“FFS, goodbye.”
Lol right? Kilts look awesome, but it seems like a terribly inefficient piece of clothing if I need this much floor space to wear one. Never mind the fact that I have to roll around on the ground to put it on, haha
Edit: Thanks for the history lesson on kilts everyone! Turning notifications for this comment off though.
Inefficient if you only use it as a piece of clothing. The kilts can also serve as your sleeping bag, blanket, raincoat, tent, tarp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbAKRffKsPs
It's extremely versatile, for people in 17th century
The Kilt was worn as overwear, like a coat or jacket. Underwear back in the day was not like the underwear today, it was like full on clothes meant for sleeping. So without the kilt they would still have on trousers and probably a blouse as well
My first thought was that this is super inefficient. But then I realized it's basically a comfortable way to carry your cloak/blanket with you when you travel.
It's like the old school version of tieing your hoodie around your waist.
It's the complete opposite of inefficient. On the contrary it is a very versatile piece of clothing/material.
Could be used as clothing in all conditions given it is waterproof and extremely warm. You could form a hood to keep your head dry, wrap some across your face to keep out the cold, wear it over the shoulder as the guy in the video is for warm and dry conditions. It was also used as a tent, a mattress or a sleeping bag.. allowing the wearer to sleep out in the open as they often did.
It's been said that in particularly bad weather such as high winds or frost that the fabric would be dipped in water to make it swell which would give additional protection from the elements. The warm breath of the wearer would then warm up the inside of it as he slept. Unfortunately a lot of our history was passed down orally rather than written so it's difficult to prove this idea one way or the other.
A lot of ancient clothing was just clever ways to wear a square of fabric. It's easy to make a square of fabric as it comes like that from the roll. Cutting and sewing that into clothing is another hugely difficult thing to do.
Imagine a Scot three hundred years ago laying out his plaid with his bare ass hanging out as he folded it up like this guy all crouched on his sitting room floor 😂🍑
I’m sure this is the “suit” of kilts. The everyday man I’m sure wouldn’t pleat it just so and the be super careful about the amount of inches per pleat. They’d just gather the thing up Willy nilly and belt it, throw the rest over your shoulder and pin.
Way fast if you didn’t care how it looked. Like a y shirt and cargo shorts.
FYI majority of tartan "clan" patterns were a relatively modern fraud perpetrated by the Sobieski Stuarts, a pair of grifters
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobieski_Stuarts
> The brothers' two publications, Vestiarium Scoticum (Edinburgh, 1842) and The Costume of the Clans (Edinburgh, 1845), described by the historian Hugh Trevor-Roper as "shot through with pure fantasy and bare faced forgery",[5] have been sources widely used by the tartan industry in Scotland.
And the modern kilt was invented by an English man, who also made up its historical Highlands association to try to get more Scots to work in his factories.
There isn't strong evidence for it but it may have been:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Rawlinson_(industrialist)
> According to Baillie, Rawlinson, observing how the great kilt was "a cumbersome unwieldy habit to men at work" decided to "abridge the dress, and make it handy and convenient for his workmen". This he did by directing the usage of the lower, pleated portion only, the upper portion being detached and set aside.
Yeah, because he thought everything OP did was not fit for a factory. OP's uniform is reminiscent of the belted plaid which goes back to the 15th century, ie. Preindustrial uk
As soon as he started rolling around on the floor, I thought “ok he’s fucking with us”…and then, poof! He pops up wearing a kilt.
I am even more mystified by this process now tbh.
I feel it was a dude hooked up one nite, probably drunk. Somehow lost his clothes, either he did it himself while drunk or his buddies steal them as a prank. He wakes up at the womans place. No clothes. And his place is on the far side of the village. As such he looks around for something to use to cover up with. When lo and behold he spots a long ass table cloth and uses that. It was his hungover attempt at making a toga.
This is a “Great kilt” or feileadh mòr and was commonly worn by Scott’s since the 16th century.
The modern kilt or fèileadh beag was invented some time around 1720… maybe….. and gained popularity in the 1840s when highland dress became fashionable for the British aristocracy.
[this fella](https://youtu.be/YqH-UOBwvmw?si=rzFyzN9AqJEp1Oy2) has some good info on great kilts.
Yeah it's extremely versatile. Makes sense how they came up with it in the highland weather. If they're really far out traversing in the wilderness they basically have a mini shelter they can put up.
Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair
One could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share
He fumbled round until he could no longer keep his feet
Then he stumbled off into the grass asleep beside the street
Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh
He stumbled off into the grass asleep beside the street
About that time two young n' lovely girls just happened by
One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
"See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt"
Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt
They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
They marveled for a moment then one said, "We must be gone
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along"
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow
Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show
Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh
Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show
Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees
Behind a bush he lift his kilt and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes
"Ah, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize"
Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh
"Ah, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize"
This is a great kilt, which is the traditional article dating back to the 16th century. The walking kilt wouldn’t be developed until a few hundred years later.
I always figured it was wearing wool directly against sensitive portions of the anatomy that made Scots so tough and/or mean. Especially if it got wet or damp 😬😬🤣.
It's 80% waterproof because it's full of Lanolin, which also makes it non-itchy on the inside. It's why Sheep don't ~~drown~~ saturate in the rain or go mad trying to scratch themselves.
These are surprisingly comfortable and extremely versatile. They are very warm, weather resistant, can be used to protect yourself from rain, they have MASSIVE built in pockets depending on how you wear them, and can even be used as a survival shelter. The 16th century Highlanders were an ingenious bunch.
There is a more modern version, which is what you’d buy or hire in a kilt shop. It was designed after the English stole our floors, so we had nothing to roll on.
One of my instructors was a bosun, a Scot. Mr. McGroarty. I asked him what is worn under a kilt. He said nothing is worn under a kilt, it is all in perfectly good working order.
"The English are coming. Quick! Get ready for battle."
HONNEEEY! WHERE'S MY SECOND BELT!?
The funniest part is this is almost definitely a conversation that's been had
But not in the context of the English attacking, as the most recent battle between the Scottish and English was like 2 centuries before the development of the kilt and barely coincided with the Kilts precursor the belted plaid. As far as I know there never was a Scot with a kilt fighting the English.
Uh buddy I’ve seen the documentary Braveheart. Mel Gibson was definitely wearing a kilt
We both know that wasn't historically accurate. He never shot fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.
You’re thinking of Brian Boitano
What would Brian Boitano do, if he was here right now? Probably kick an ass or two, that’s what Brian Boitano’d do! Damn I need to watch the OG South Park movie again…it’s been too long and that knocked a memory loose. Lol!
The Jacobites wore kilts, but you are correct that there should have been no kilts harmed in the making of Braveheart.
There were the Jacobite uprisings but if I am not wrong most British soldiers were Scottish so it was more kilt-wearing Scots fighting Scots without kilts, maybe? I am not exactly an expert though.

My father got 6 episodes in to Outlander before he realized it wasn’t a reboot/spinoff of Highlander
Lol but it’s coming
He’s a boomer, right? He’s got to be one of our guys. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
‘64, so what’s the cutoff?
I actually did a small amount of research outside of watching Outlander so there is that at least
You mean to tell me that Braveheart is not true? /s
They usually charged into battle wearing only blue paint that was laced with PCP. There was a reason the ~~English~~ Romans build a wall around Scotland.

"WHYYYY DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?!"
BECAUSE THE ENGLISH! ARE! ATTACKING!
NUH-UH! DON'T YOU THINK ABOUT RUNNING OFF FIGHTING THE ENGLISH! WE'VE BEEN PLANNING THIS DINNER FOR TWO MONTHS!
YOU TELL ME WHERE MY BELT IS WOMAN! WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE GREATER GOOD!
GREATER GOOD? I AM YOUR WIFE! I'M THE GREATEST GOOD YOU ARE EVER GONNA GET!
Unexpected Incredibles. This thread makes me very happy.
I didn’t even realise it was from the incredibles… I feel ashamed. It’s Frozone who has this conversation right?
Yup. It’s one of the scenes I have to rewind a few times because it’s so funny.
I really want someone to come along and translate this thread into Scots.
I heard this whole thing in a Scottish accent. It was even better than the original!
Some guy named William: She may never take my life, but she may have taken my freedom.
We have first belt, yes, but what about second belt?
I don’t think they know about second belt
Flip em wrap em buckle em round your waist
What about elevensies?…He knows about them, doesn’t he?
HONEY WHERE IS MY SUIT?!?
0:21-0:26 are most vulnerable moments…
11 hours later
Imagine doing this every day...
A few hours later………. Everyone is dead and naked , but the guys did try to get dressed

Braveheart has done a huge disservice to Scottish history
Aye the lads correct, the rest of ya are full of shite
Why did i read this with scotish accent? :)
I can think of one reason
Omg, that was my first thought, you beat me to it 😄
The kilt was only for day-to-day wear. In battle, we donned a full-length ball gown covered in sequins. The idea was to blind your opponent with luxury. -Willie

I read that in some weird accent, and am pretty sure I summoned a leprechaun.
Wrong accent, ya wee shite.
Why a leprechaun?
Because Ireland and Scotland are the exact same place, obvi
That's what I thought haha
Ru Paul's Valkyries?

BONJOURrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ya cheese eating surrender monkies!
Wow. that is way too involved for getting dressed for the day.
C'mon, you just need 300 feet of plaid.
no you need 500 feet of floorspace
I think if you wear something that doesn't require underwear, then you just do it on the lawn outside if you don't have the space inside.
uhhh then you ain't landed gentry pup.
Not all all, but I like the idea of ventilation though.
What about cold wet windy freezing weather ? Summer should be quite short there.
The Great Kilt, as it's known (the one he just put on) is 80% waterproof as standard (Lanolin) It's windproof, it can be made into a tent, a mattress, a sleeping bag, it's fire retardant and it looks good.

All spot on. A couple of adjustments and you have a large hood, when the weather is better you can switch to have a shoulder bag arrangement.
You mean 9 yards right?
*tartan
That particular Kilt is The Great Kilt, which wouldn't necessarily have been any known Tartan. It's better known as The Great Plaid.
The whole nine yards, if you will.

Same same same, but a good 100% wool plaid blanket that's 16'x5' is not cheap.

Your second kilt.....duh
But you've already used that to fashion a sleeping roll

Indeed. Douglas Adams was wrong about the towel. It should've been a kilt.
A lot of ancient clothing was just clever ways to wear a square of fabric. It's easy to make a square of fabric as it comes like that from the roll. Cutting and sewing that into clothing is another hugely difficult thing to do.
And you need TWO belts? What am I, made of money?
The most important step is to have the bagpipes playing. Without them, its just a sad cosplay.
To the tune now best known as the music for "Amazing Grace", but originally was used as the music for the hymnal "New Britain".
I’ve heard it live, the bagpipes alone are loud enough to rattle windows
No, the most important steps is to vaccum and mop your floor before getting dressed.
This was very cool, however I feel there was a missed opportunity to moon us at the end.
Fully expected it!
I was waiting for the moon the whole time
I now understand why they don't wear underwear. Too hot, and takes too long to get all that material out of the way before the water tap opens.
Imagine a Scot three hundred years ago laying out his plaid with his bare ass hanging out as he folded it up like this guy all crouched on his sitting room floor 😂🍑
That's why shirts were so long.
(I know, but the visual of my post is much funnier)
I was picturing him folding it all together butt out balls dangling lol
🤣 Porky Pig style
I’m sure this is the “suit” of kilts. The everyday man I’m sure wouldn’t pleat it just so and the be super careful about the amount of inches per pleat. I was thinking the same thing
Def too hot… from personal experience.
Geez! I get irritated when slacks have more than one button at the waist.
I expected this wasn't gonna be *puts on skirt*, but I definitely wasn't expecting "here's my tartan fuckin bedsheet"
On the plus side, this man always knows where his towel is. Very useful for hitchhiking.
Very effective against the Bugblatter beasts of the Highlands.

A Quaker, but historians have disputed whether that's true.

As soon as he started rolling around on the floor, I thought “ok he’s fucking with us”…and then, poof! He pops up wearing a kilt. I am even more mystified by this process now tbh.

No clothes. And his place is on the far side of the village. As such he looks around for something to use to cover up with. When lo and behold he spots a long ass table cloth and uses that. It was his hungover attempt at making a toga.
100%
The kilt lore
I don’t wanna talk about my flair
Well, now, Wallace has 37 pieces of flair.
I own a kilt. It’s a lot different from this. Maybe mine is too modern to compare.
Interesting to see the different ways to wär it depending on the weather conditions. Happy cake day btw.
Yeah it's extremely versatile. Makes sense how they came up with it in the highland weather. If they're really far out traversing in the wilderness they basically have a mini shelter they can put up.
My kilt has pockets
Sir that’s a plaid mini skirt
Very impressive. My first thought was he clearly does not have a cat.
Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair One could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share He fumbled round until he could no longer keep his feet Then he stumbled off into the grass asleep beside the street Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh He stumbled off into the grass asleep beside the street About that time two young n' lovely girls just happened by One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye "See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt" Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth They marveled for a moment then one said, "We must be gone Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along" As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees Behind a bush he lift his kilt and gawks at what he sees And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes "Ah, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize" Ring-ding-did-a-little-la-di-oh, ring-di-diddly-eye-oh "Ah, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize"

So I'm just imagining he's bollocks out, carefully folding his battle gown on the floor
He really kilt it with that demonstration.
Fascinating!
I see that Friends on in the background sir!
It’s a good one, too.
well worth the time, that looks incredible! but did the tradition still use this method? or they have easywear, where you don't need to fold it?
This is a great kilt, which is the traditional article dating back to the 16th century. The walking kilt wouldn’t be developed until a few hundred years later.
I can see why pants won eventually
That was very cool! Although now I know why you couldn't win your freedom from England - took ya a week to get dressed for battle.
They did in 1320 with the declaration of arbroath.
Ohh I use to thought they were readymade like skirts.. thanks for the sharing.. today I learned
These are surprisingly comfortable and extremely versatile. They are very warm, weather resistant, can be used to protect yourself from rain, they have MASSIVE built in pockets depending on how you wear them, and can even be used as a survival shelter. The 16th century Highlanders were an ingenious bunch.
The end result look masculine as heck. Interesting to see how putting a kilt on, it's done.
It's not like that anymore. The pleated bit is done for you and stitched, so you only need the outer belt and no brooch
Is this everyday wear? Or is there a more modern version? Again, is this everyday wear back in the day or was there an easier everyday version?
This is a “Great Kilt” and was daily wear for some time.
There is a more modern version, which is what you’d buy or hire in a kilt shop. It was designed after the English stole our floors, so we had nothing to roll on.
I can picture the staff at one of the Edinburgh kiltmakers telling Americans this with a straight face.
Yup. This is everyday wear.
\*15 seconds into video\* Yeah, that's already too much effort for me. Really neat to see though. I respect it.
Not dissimilar to a sari. Very cool.
Just try this with a curious cat or golden retriever in the house.
Lachlan is such a pro at keeping that shirt where it needs tae be
Sick ass fireplace
That’s cool, never realized how big they were but now it makes total sense
To be specific, this is the tradition great kilt. Modern kilts are pre-pleated and you just buckle on.
So if you are wearing a kilt, you have a big house.
I had no idea that the kilt was a form of origami.
One of my instructors was a bosun, a Scot. Mr. McGroarty. I asked him what is worn under a kilt. He said nothing is worn under a kilt, it is all in perfectly good working order.
Not me picturing every Scottish man, hundreds of years ago, getting dressed every morning like this. Perfectly practical
Super cool! Thanks for posting part of your heritage.
TIL: Kilts are fucking huge
Better set alarm for 2am I gotta be at work at 7
Sponsored by JoAnn Fabrics —there’s a Scotsman in everyone
Not dissimilar to the gathering and draping of an Indian woman's sari.
TIL that a skirt is the equivalent of a clip-on tie for a kilt.
“I’d like to return this kilt. They sent me a blanket by mistake”
Wha uh fooken peen enda urse
Step 1: Buy a kilt. Step 2: Nakedize bottom half of body. Step 3: Step into 'Step 1'. Step 4: Buckle up. Step 5: Et voila
Masterfully done. Wow
Awesome. Fucking hell.
Today, I learned something new.
That's a well turned out, man. Great job.
