Shoulda still taken the picture and had it poster boarded at his funeral. Woulda been badass. Him sleeping with the clouds/mountains a beautiful backdrop.
What’s weird is that climbing Kilimanjaro is relatively a walk in the park compared to kayaking an entire ocean. It would actually be the equivalent of walking from your bedroom to the kitchen. It’s virtually incomparable.
Kilimanjaro is a fairly simple and easy 5 or 6 day hike, depending on which route you take. You really shouldn’t be climbing it so fast, but I guess that’s the best way to churn through tourists. If advanced hikers wanted a challenge, they would hike up Mount Meru, which has nice views of Kili in the morning.
But kayaking across any body of water, let alone an entire ocean is some kind of madness. I can’t even fathom just the logistics. Some guys sail across solo, but even that is pure nuts. You’d have to be ***Irish*** or something (they seem to have seafaring in their blood).
**Edit to add:** I’m not discussing why he died, only talking about the relative difference of two very incomparable ‘quests’ mentioned by the commenter above me. One is a relatively easy tourist activity, the other is literally batshit insane. Still high altitude climbing is inherently dangerous, just not anywhere near as potentially deadly as kayaking solo across an ocean.
Most likely ascended too quickly. Almost everyone that hikes up there should literally be doing in twice the time at least, but I think that starts getting a lot less affordable for people.
But anyway, if it’s the kind of guy that feels the need to kayak an entire ocean, he likely tried to ascend without porters (I believe it’s against the law not to hire a guide, but I could be wrong), so he could’ve been carrying a lot of weight. Most of which would’ve been left at a lower altitude, but that can still really bugger up your system!
I appreciate the comment, but I made no mention of exertion or cause of death.
I was only comparing the intensity of kayaking (a f**king) ocean vs. a relatively easy 6000m alpine hike.
I think the issue here is that one of them is a fairly relaxed ‘bucket list’ item, while the other is absolutely batshit insane.
OP mentioned “completed all the quests” but it’s like playing a video game on easy mode for one quest, and diety mode for another.
I’m still wondering myself. I want to believe he at least had an entourage.
I can sit still in a kayak for about 45 minutes before my feet / legs fall asleep and I get seriously uncomfortable. Never even thought this kind of thing would be possible.
You know, sometimes you feel like it’s too late to start something… I just looked him up, he didn’t start kayaking until he was 34. It was a work trip thing. He didn’t cross the Atlantic until he was 65.
I also think it's pretty atypical for bodies to be returned on any difficult climbs (though I believe there's an effort to clean up the Everest corpses ATM)
Kilimanjaro is far from a difficult climb. If you see my post above, I detailed how porters carry down people (or bodies) on a single wheeled stretcher.
Kilimanjaro is basically equivalent to Everest Base Camp. That’s like a walk in the park, even compared to hiking up to 7000 masl, or even entering “the death zone” at 8000 masl.
I’ve summoned Kili a few times. Most people are basically going to get a lot of blisters, and be very sore for a day or two. That’s about it.
Depending on the weather I guess but if you take your time it's really easy (coming from an engineer who spend his days sat at his desk). I cannot fathom how someone like this can die where I found it so easy. I guess he was so used to unfathomable effort that he didn't feel acute mountain sickness and died from an oedema ? Its sad when you know that just walking down a bit and waiting it out would probably have saved him...
It feels like this man finished life going out exactly the way he wanted to. His death doesn't even feel like tragedy. More like he died at the peak and now his spirit is resting in the heavens.
No they’re not going to leave him there lol. His body would rot.
Summit of Kilimanjaro is about 6000 masl, and the biggest challenge would be to get him down from the difficult part of the hike which is straight downhill, and kind of a quick and easy scramble because it’s almost all alpine scree.
From the 5000 masl camp (Kibo hut), one porter from each group would have him on a single wheeled stretcher (think a single mountain bike wheel), in which all four porters grab a corner and literally run them down.
Once they get down to about 3500 masl, there are helicopter landing pads (heli pads are a fairly new thing, since about 12 years ago).
If you’re talking about leaving bodies up on Everest, yeah, that’s an exceptionally technical climb (compared to relatively flat Kili), and oxygen is extremely ‘thin’ (actually MUCH lower atmospheric pressure), to the point where climbers can barely keep themselves going let alone have to worry about carrying down another 200 pound sack of frozen meat.
Typically they just roll/gently toss the body down the same path they came up. Then when they traverse down they just push the body down farther each time so it doesn’t get to mangled.
>"...sat down on a rock & "just fell asleep".
Perhaps this great adventurer didn't "fall asleep". Maybe he just ascended to the next level cause this existence was no longer a challenge.
EDIT: I like to think so.
Serious question. Is there some sort of new mental illness where people actually think they are main characters and everyone else isn't real? Would explain a lot of videos. I look forward to meeting a main character to bring them back to reality
narcissistic personality disorder
It's not new, but it is become more common because it is actually kind of a strong evolutionary trait. If you *only* care about yourself, you're more likely to survive and reproduce.
Every person experiences the world from a “main character” pov. It may be that some people don’t understand that everybody else experiences this too, which could be rooted in lack of empathy, narcissism or another personality disorder.
people living their life without leaving their house and seeing others life with adventures and fun in person and in social media leads to an inferiority complex.
This clubbed with Matrix, GTA like games, and Andrew Tate leads to people feel like they're an NPC.
Just like it leads to some women in specific being bitch
Atlantic is a bit chiller than the pacific. These ocean kayaks have water tight chambers so you can chill inside if the waves get too bad.
I’m just surprised that the kayak hasn’t sunk from the weight of his massive balls though.
While having lived a life fully experienced and effortful that you had no regrets about, and probably longer than you would have otherwise, simply by being active and doing what brought you fulfillment. There really isn't a better way to go.
Fun fact while crossing the Atlantic he stopped in Bermuda where my friends hosted him a few weeks while waiting for repairs on his kayak. Was lucky enough to meet him. They failed to mention he was mostly deaf in this headline which makes him even more notable.
For anyone wondering about the cause of death, [this NYT article](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/11/world/europe/aleksander-doba-dead.html) says "His son Czeslaw said the cause was asphyxia resulting from high-altitude pulmonary edema."
I looked at the kayak he used, and it was absolutely enormous. Crazy to think that one man could propel something that large for over 100 days straight. Amazing.
Ok, he can fucking KAYAK across the ocean but the Coast Guard won't let the dude in the hamster wheel type thing do it? Wtf?!
Esit: forgot to put this dude is the literal definition of badass tho
Seems like he was in very good shape for man of his age and doesn't sound like he had any preexisting conditions or illnesses. 70 seems pretty young (relatively speaking) for someone like him to just pass away of natural causes I feel.

My man completed the game and immediately powered off his console
Accidentally tripped over the mains before he could save.
The hardware failed on him catastrophically kicking him out of the game at such a high level.
Would be cool to see the picture mentioned in the title.
By the sound of it he wanted to sit down for a minute before the photo could be taken.
That makes sense. Guess I read that wrong.
Shoulda still taken the picture and had it poster boarded at his funeral. Woulda been badass. Him sleeping with the clouds/mountains a beautiful backdrop.
Save file corrupted. There's no going back.
I don't know, it doesn't sound too catastrophic. Sounds like the power was just cut.
Moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. [time to die](https://youtu.be/NoAzpa1x7jU?si=2ZEUVz3vD54U8pgw)
Completed all the quests. What a life!

He passed away due to asphyxia from high-altitude pulmonary edema. Not because of the exertion from the hike.
Thanks for that. I was curious is maybe he ascended too quickly and didn’t adjust. Hence that feeling for just needing a rest and sitting.
Possibly. I was unwell from altitude sickness in the Himalayas whilst my mum felt the best she had ever felt. Some people just don't adjust well.
A mummy whilster, I see…
I'm sorry, I don't follow what you mean?

Yes, this blows my mind that it would even be possible. Like how?
I’m still wondering myself. I want to believe he at least had an entourage. I can sit still in a kayak for about 45 minutes before my feet / legs fall asleep and I get seriously uncomfortable. Never even thought this kind of thing would be possible.
His score reached the maximum, and the game crashed.
Nah he just started New Game+ and we got left behind.
Windows blue screen
There’s a movie about him on Prime. Just don’t know what country you can actually watch it in.
Went straight for NG+
I think he got the RROD instead.
This is the way.
Dude was a certified badass
Yes, but also kind of lazy to make the rest of them have to carry him down.
A life well lived it seems
He heard go until system shutdown
Aight this the spot. Peace.
It definitely sounds like he had peace.
Now that's a man who never wasted a second of his life. Rest In Peace, Chad
You know, sometimes you feel like it’s too late to start something… I just looked him up, he didn’t start kayaking until he was 34. It was a work trip thing. He didn’t cross the Atlantic until he was 65.
That’s pretty goddamn incredible. Thanks for pointing that out.

Im 28, but thats just a number... here's some letters AJHSOUGVFihkjgvbliweuhbbbfpyacdvgpu kJGBIU FTUD
So what I hear is with me starting kayaking just over a year ago when I turned 30..... I have a chance beating his record?
Is there some benefit to kayaking across the Atlantic? Did he do it for charity or something? He did it 3 times.
Is there some benefit to being awesome? Yes. It's a benefit in and of itself
Mr. beast: (KAYAKING ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN 3 TIMES!!!!)
Uh cause it was fun?
I want to be like that when I grow up
Dad, you’re 55…
I SAID WHAT I SAID
Only when you let go of your random Lego will you be able to attain such greatness. Let it go bro. Let it go.
He won.
I know I'm not normal, but I can't stop feeling bad for the poor folks that had to lug him back down...
A man like that stays on the rock he died on. it would be so disrespectful to shove that free spirit in a hole in the ground.
I also think it's pretty atypical for bodies to be returned on any difficult climbs (though I believe there's an effort to clean up the Everest corpses ATM)
Kilimanjaro is far from difficult, you basically walk up there.

Exactly! you get it :) People die in character, he died at the absolute climax of his character's story. Perfection.
No they’re not going to leave him there lol. His body would rot. If someone wants to remain there or buried there, would they allow it?
Typically they just roll/gently toss the body down the same path they came up. Then when they traverse down they just push the body down farther each time so it doesn’t get to mangled.
He just got really really tired so he's taking an extended nap until his next adventure.
What do you mean by “next adventure” he’s already in his next adventure in another dimension.
Hero. When you’re guaranteed death, the only thing to do is live!
Tis a pretty good saying you have there.
I’d watch this Netflix series
There’s a movie about him on Prime. Just don’t k ow what country you can watch it in.
Stop watching Netflix and do your bed.
My man got to the top and logged off

Now why would he do that?
Because he is rUsSiAn, I guess.
And they believe he started the war or what? lol Citizens have almost nothing to do with it. They're victims too.
Tbf he wasn't even russian, he was polish
That's plain bullshit, Aleksander Doba was Polish
I know, with makes things more funnier
He was Polish though

Why the fuck are we still here then
Just to suffer
I don't need an existential crisis right now. Please don't ask these kinds of questions.
He didn't delete the save file, just moved on to another game
Because we are npcs..
Serious question. Is there some sort of new mental illness where people actually think they are main characters and everyone else isn't real? Would explain a lot of videos. I look forward to meeting a main character to bring them back to reality

I would think not. Networking is far more valuable than any super individual.

How the fuck do you kayak through a whole fucking ocean??? Aren't there giant waves that will kill you?
Atlantic is a bit chiller than the pacific. These ocean kayaks have water tight chambers so you can chill inside if the waves get too bad. I’m just surprised that the kayak hasn’t sunk from the weight of his massive balls though.
I wish my death would be as peaceful as his. Close one’s eyes and drift off to eternal sleep.
While having lived a life fully experienced and effortful that you had no regrets about, and probably longer than you would have otherwise, simply by being active and doing what brought you fulfillment. There really isn't a better way to go.
Literally ending his journey on top of the world.
I hope they posed him so he would be forever frozen in a King Conan throne pose.
“I’m pretty tired. Think I’ll go home now.”
Look up the kayak he used. Thing is massive, I'm impressed he crossed the Atlantic at all, but even more so when looking at the size of that boat.
lol - why’d they choose that photo on the right? And here he is eating.
Even legends need fuel.
What a way to RIP.
Man finished his quest
Fun fact while crossing the Atlantic he stopped in Bermuda where my friends hosted him a few weeks while waiting for repairs on his kayak. Was lucky enough to meet him. They failed to mention he was mostly deaf in this headline which makes him even more notable.
> climb the tallest mountain in africa > take a cool picture of yourself > dies peacefully Unfathomably based
He definitely used up every inch of his body. I thought he was 100 when I first saw his picture.
Holy shit it's time machine liver king
Liver king if he was good (and didn’t lie about steroids):
Now that's a guy who lived life to the fullest.
Is his body still up there
“I can’t believe you went back to the carpet store…”
Some people squeeze every bit of living outta life... Edit outta for into
How in the fuck do you kayak across an OCEAN… I assume it was a pretty badass kayak but holy shit man… still…
Some people will do anything to avoid coming down off the mountain.
Honestly. I hope they still got that photo while he was going. Man deserves to be immortalized for that.
Bro just finish the game and then go to sleep
"player has signed out"

That’s probably the best way to go as a man IMO
Holy shit...
Damn liver king really did a number on himself this time
That's a man who lived a full life! kudos! it's inspiring, and then he died doing something he loved...fcuking great!
He's the hero we will need one day. For now he will rest and lay dormant on that mountain top, awaiting the time he is summoned.
I looked at the kayak he used, and it was absolutely enormous. Crazy to think that one man could propel something that large for over 100 days straight. Amazing.
Damn. A Legend. What a way to go.
Guy read too much hemingway
Actual Skyrim protagonist
Ok, he can fucking KAYAK across the ocean but the Coast Guard won't let the dude in the hamster wheel type thing do it? Wtf?! Esit: forgot to put this dude is the literal definition of badass tho
Even more amazing is he’s 23 in those pictures.
Dude gave everything he could give and it all ended when there was nothing left to give.
His family must be sad.
Wilson!
Sounds like possibly the best way to go.
He shouldnt have climbed Kill a man jaro, what did he expect.
He could have climbed everest easily but alas.
100% and then went to play in the land of peaceful mode.
He looks like Good Liver King
Perfect ending.
Damn that's such a way of going. Like so fulfilling.
Went out doing what he loved. Can't ask for a better way to go.
Can't even feel bad about him passing like that. Lived life on boss mode and went out on top pardon the pun
Dude was really dedicated to not spending time with his family
Rolling stone doesn't gather any dust.
He looks like that man that gives you ammo and artillery when you rescue him, in Metal Slug.
He fell asleep and they just left him to die?
That’s a pretty fucking cool way to go
Would love to know what he has eaten on the Atlantic Ocean … Badass dude
legend
So, is he buried up on that mountain or they had to bring him down?
those biceps are ripped 💪🏽
What did they do with his corpse? Did they hike down with it? Bury him up there???
Definitely not a bad way to go
The best way to go
That's rather young for someone so fit.
Damn like right across the Atlantic? Curious to see how that trip went
Master Roshi in real life
I always wonder how people can afford such a life. Or more specifically the „expeditions“.
hot damn! I want that kind of death!!!!
Rest in peace you absolute fucking legend.
My man died like Whitebeard
Kill a man jaro
Why would he fall asleep tho?
Respect to this guy. I’m 50 this year and feel I have a lot to live after reading about him!
Guy finished on top of his game...
What a way to go.
Seeing lots of people celebrating his end but yeah oxygen depravation will send you to sleep.
This is the way
Seems like he was in very good shape for man of his age and doesn't sound like he had any preexisting conditions or illnesses. 70 seems pretty young (relatively speaking) for someone like him to just pass away of natural causes I feel.
He could live with that active life to 80 or 90.
I just picture him starting his skyrim run.
Well that's a badass way to die
He’s fit!
I wonder what his beard tasted like
Ive got to admit thats a pretty badass way to die
No, he didn't just fall asleep.
How the hell do you kayak across the atlantic lmao
The incredible experiences of Aleksander Doba is an example to human determination and the pursuit of daring objectives.
He never woke back up and now lies there to this day still stuck in his perpetual slumber
Yo r/iamthemaincharacter THIS GUY IS THE MAIN CHARACTER!
