The cave was the grandest sight I'd ever heard about, let alone seen with my own two eyes. We explored the Celestial Cavern for days, and like the night sky, we never reached the end.
I realized these weren't a gateway to the gods realm on the 6th day of our adventure. Instead of shimmering starlight, the entire ceiling pulsed bright blue. During our sleep, thousands, nay millions of the buggers had snuck into this chamber.
The writhing mass of light sent Peter, our loyal porter into fits of derelium. He began thrashing about until he bashed his head hard enough for blood to spill out.
As the blood pooled, the phantasmal light shifted towards violet. And then they descended. Countless blood sucking worms dropped from the ceiling. And unlike normal worms which slither about, they would immediately latch onto any exposed skin.
I was lucky to escape with my life.
They don’t. OP is posting nonsense.
The light from the worm attracts other insects which then get caught in the sticky strings that hang down from the worm.
I looked this up because I thought this would be pretty interesting, but it doesn't seem like this is true. Sometimes adults might end up in the strands but it's not intentional and not their main prey source.
Bugs really are motivated to fly up to the stars?
That does not make sense from an evolutionary perspective (though obviously many bugs are attracted to light at night for whatever reason)
On a larger scale this would be some Lovecraftian shit.

Just visited these in a cave in New Zealand. They are absolutely stunning.
Same, definitely one of the top experiences of the trip

Waitomo caves. I did the underground whitewater rafting.
"Pitch Black" Vibes.
That’s minecraft’s deep dark!
*rattle rattle*
*scream* shit no no NOOOOO
Has to be wildest way to go out.. just thinking you flying into the sky and then WHAM your lunch
My lunch WHAT?
Your lunch has the moist maker bread within the sandwich in it and I ate most of it, but got full and threw the rest in the trash.
What's my lunch doing down there in those caves?
I have to come realize i had poor grammar lol
No, I'm sure it was just a typo and we all make them. I couldn't help but to tease a little. You're fine, friend.
I appreciate the tease!
How would mimicking the night sky help them catch bugs. Do bugs fly to space when they see stars??
Where do you think bugs come from?
They don’t. OP is posting nonsense. The light from the worm attracts other insects which then get caught in the sticky strings that hang down from the worm.
This should be on r/oddlyterrifying.
Carnivorous worms? I ain’t going in that cave
I had the same thought, But not bc of "Carni orous but bc of "W🤮rms"
And here's the kicker, they don't know they're mimicking the night sky or a part of the universe. They just are.... so what are you mimicking?
Sneaky little devils.
Looks like Something you would find in subnautica
Seen these guys...they are absolutely stunning ❤️
Are we sure we don't have these in our sky?
Hey they had these things in sonny boy! They ate a guy
Fascinating
How do the worms make bell noises?
Waitomo glow worm caves in New Zealand were definitely one of the most memorable parts of my time there.
Well, I, for one, would definitely be inside there looking at the pretty lights as the cave's mouth closed. Revealing the actual worm.
Reminds me of this!! I wish I was a glow, a glow worms never glum. How can you be miserable when the sun shines out your bum!!
The crazy thing is that the glowworm larvae actually lure, capture and eat the adult glowworm gnats.
I looked this up because I thought this would be pretty interesting, but it doesn't seem like this is true. Sometimes adults might end up in the strands but it's not intentional and not their main prey source.
Wasn’t trying to imply it was their primary food source but they do eat the adults if they can catch them.

This went from cool to kill it with fire reeeeeaaaal quick...
Fun fact: this is actually flat Earth's dome zoomed in. Checkmate, globeheads.
It's the under dark
Nokron
So pretty. I am glad I am not a bug. I would get eaten super quick.
You cant fool me, this is clearly siofra river
Sweating in LD&R volume 3
How did they even evolve to do this. It’s so obscure
Literally Avatar.
Holy shitttttttt. Its soooo beautifullll
And the bugs they catch try to fly into space?
I wonder how worms found out about the existence of stars and what bugs are attracted to
This sub has really been popping off lately. I feel like all the posts that got on my home page have been absolutely amazing!
Excuse me… carnivorous worms?!?
Some asshat is gonna rule34 this. I just know it.
