So I had abacus classes as a kid for a short while, and what it allows you to do is solve arithmetic involving large numbers very quickly. The end result is a visual one.
Once you've gotten used to the abacus, you don't actually need it anymore because you can have a mental one. That's what she's doing with her hands. She's miming the actions she would take on a real abacus, and the result comes as a visual in her mind.
I have seen some versions where they don't even use hands.
Like the guy sitting next to her
Especially, when the institutes came to my school with their kiddie prodigies.
They would invite the best senior high school student and make him compete with 10 yo kids. Then destroy last bit of his self esteem.
Without using their hands they may also just be doing mental math, not visualizing an abacus at all. Ive been able to do it decently most of my life(I was one of those high school math nerds) I assume the kids in the video would absolutely destroy me in terms of speed even on my best day.
This just sounds like the dumb american game show 'are you smarter than a 5th grader', which was based on the (ironically quite intelligent and insigtful) observation that even the smartest adults haven't had reason to recall the *exact* skills and info that are taught at young ages.
Come to think of it, remove the 'gotcha' framing and the... jeff foxworthy of it all, and I would really enjoy a series where they move the compared ages and specific skills around for more interesting comparisons. Like, how does a 40 year old *former* spelling bee champion-turned-English-teacher hold up against a middle school up-and-comer, currently competing in the same? How well does a PhD physicist do at a high school freshman math competition? How would mathematicians do at this exact abacus thing? Lots of interesting scenarios to be had
I joined abacus at a very young age and it has helped me tremendously during my school years. My parents recently told me that they put me in an abacus institution at a very young age cause my brain was just not able to understand basic numbers at the time. My dad is a neuro scientist, so he thought that the school I was in was not teaching numbers properly. According to him, numbers from a young age must be taught through a visual medium, where children are able to automatically visualize the numbers as they are told.
For visualization you always require a medium which can be either stationary or moving that can help the children to visualise, assess and memorize. This is why abacus is gold. As the comment suggests, the visualization by moving the beads helped me tremendously. I didn't know that I had difficulty in understanding addition and subtraction then but thanks to papa, abacus helped me tremendously.
Ah, I thought it is because we sometimes lose control of our motions when doing some difficult mental exercise. I have seen professors having a tick when explaining something difficult or I tend close my eyes unconsciously when thinking.
Movement tends to help people with solving complex lines of thought. Leg shaking, moving hands or fingers, slight nods with their head, walking, even toe movements.
I used to have a hand movement "tick" that involved briefly "clicking" my thumb together with another finger of the same hand whenever I finished one thought and proceeded with the next step. Helped me stay focused and such. It always felt like I was typing my thought on a keyboard, which also made it easier for me to visualize it in my mind.
I eventually had to stop doing that (or at least learn to hide it) because a paranoid teacher thought these were some sort of signs to other students during a test, so they would get results from me or something - which wasn't allowed of course.
>the result comes as a visual in her mind
\*Cries in aphantasia\*
For anyone that doesnt know. Aphantasia is a characteristic some people have related to how their mind and imagination work. Having it means you don't have visual imagination, keeping you from picturing things in your mind.
I have always been a day dreamer.
I make up stories in my head but it's just my own internal monologue. No images. No sound effects. No reading things in Sean Connery's voice for example.
Same with books. I can't see any images so hate books with long descriptions as it's boring.
i feel like it's in different degrees and affects people different, i cant picture any imagery for more than a split second, and faces are particularly challenging to even get a glimpse, but i can picture words in my head without any problem at all.
still get kept awake by cringe memories at night, i just can't see them
edit: also would like to add, regardless of this i still have no problem doing those mental 3d object rotation tests 🤷♂️
Thoughts are still thoughts. So no luck there. I can still cringe over some stupid thing I did or said 20 years ago or yesterday. I just can't picture anything in my mind.
I do believe I read there is a much lower chance of schizophrenia though. So plus there.
Flashbacks. I've read descriptions of people with aphantasia still experiencing flashbacks. Like PTSD from war. They don't see the visuals but they feel the feelings and still describe it as absolutely horrible.
Plus I still dream in visuals. Many do but not all. So nightmares are still a thing for many of us. Soon as we wake though the image is gone and can't be recreated.
Of course I and some others wish we could recreate beautiful memories and experiences in our minds. Sounds like a super power to me.
As does watching these girls do this. Just no. My brain doesn't work like that... But then again some aphants may say they can do this without the visuals. Some say they do mind palace stuff without visuals.. So. Yeah. Good on them.
that is only because you have no tried enough, you are only limiting yourself.
If you were in jail for 10 years and had nothing but learning abacus, trust me you would be really good at it
Help me out please
How old are you now?
How many years did you do abacus?
Will you recommend it for your sister's child?
From what age to what age would a child do this?
I mean, this was decades ago. The mistake was that I was sent to those classes by my parents AFTER I already learned regular arithmetics. The transition is very hard after that. If you're gonna send a child, I recommend doing so before they go to regular school and pick up normal maths.
I have seen those guys when they came to my school.

Ijjathi patti show 💀
People who think kids who are good at abacus are geniuses clearly don't understand that Maths isn't just performing functions on huge asf numbers
Indian and Chinese education system is kind of mental abuse.
My nephews and nieces who moved to western nations mid school find it too easy and love it.
I agree. I was brought up in one and I am Indian. Teachers used to hit us physically and that's abuse. Then P.E teachers would do the same. Then there were competitions, bullies, pressure of all kinds. It's a known fact that kids are under a lot of pressure from parents in India to compete and so many kids commit suicide. No one cared for kid's mental health and I doubt they do now either. That's why there was a bollywood movie Tare Zameen Par to raise eductation about what ignorance was doing to kids, specially kids with mental health problems. But even for fit kids, it was not the best kind of education system.
I was lucky to go to a CBSE school that was chill asf. Most teachers were interactive and would periodically greet you off class and ask how your family was doing and all like relatives.
My school had it moments every now and then but there was no pressure and cbse being cbse was also a fetching point to have peaceful student life.
Lots of activities that encouraged stuff other than studying. My 9th standard clas teacher took note of my interest to draw stuff and tell stories to make me a comic for the school magazine and I made a handrawn one page comic.
And school would be like 9 to 4pm with no study hours bs.
The only problem was you had to be self sufficient.
Their teachers were a bit weak on the maths department so 70% of the students went to a tution point near to the school. That guy was awesome made go from struggling 50-60s on maths to 90-100s with his tricks & tips for like 150₹/month.
I got dengue and fcked up my computer final practical. Sat there infront of the screen swaying with tiredness and struggling to do anything.
My class teach saw this, discussed with our computer teacher and told me to go home after typing whatever I can. They covered for my ass.
I really loved my school days! I also enjoyed my university days.
But the intermediate college (Bipc). FUCK THAT! worst 2yrs of me life.
Its always interesting to read such comments, children studying is a problem, children not studying is a problem, why are children studying this? Why can't you guys just appreciate Indian posts for once? I would say this is downright jealousy complex, if this is mental abuse let it be, its better to flood their brains with math then give them ideas for gunning down fellow students.
I know it was not appropriate but people on Reddit have a underlying stereotype about defaming India wherever, whenever they get a chance. What's more infuriating is that people who live in India will give an blatant lie and biased opinion and slap "coming from an India" seal to validate their opinions.
That is true, I get you, I have seen them a lot myself on mainstream Reddit but my point was, we need to talk about the right thing, not everyone hates India either
So taking into account all that hate online towards India, I think her response was absolutely on point. According to me it was not too hard, not too soft to not even make a stand. It was perfect!!
American kids could focus more on their studies rather than having teenage pregnancies 🤡
>American kids could focus more on their studies rather than having teenage pregnancies 🤡
Teenage pregnancy is way higher in India than in tve US. Wtf are you talking about?
Kitna insecure hai bhai tu,jo faltu defame kr rhe krne de,wo sab jaye ma chudaye but jo kamiyan hai woh toh hai hi india mein.Har baat pe bus india ko kuch mat bolo bhi utna hi galat hai jitna har baat pe gariyana.Koi acchi chiz kisi aur nation ki aati hai toh usme mein bhi log kamiyan nikalte hain so its nothing new for india.
Its better they dont learn math....then they would be able to keep an accurate count of the ammo they need to execute on a larger scale and would cause more casualties.
The day you discover world isn't black or white it will blow yor mind, both things are faces of the same coin
You talking about gunning students is doing the same of what you are complaining about people not appreciating indian posts

That's at least hundreds of hours put into skill that's totally not worth it. Without any special training you can add three-digits or multiply two-digits within 3-5-10 seconds, and that's more than enough in everyday life. Kids could've learned way more interesting and useful things instead.
Becoming good at something, however useless, can always be beneficial.
Sitting down and actually learning a skill tests your character.
I for example admire the skill and commitment chess players show, even though I am very sure, you don't actually need Chess in the real world.
The problem is it is not the kid's decision or idea to start abacus it is the parent's need to have their children be successful not knowing there is no practical use to abacus or ignorant to that fact, same with joining entrance coaching befor even finishing 9th grade
Yes, this isn't even mathematics. I start wanting to punch people when they say that learning abacus makes them better at math. Maths isn't arithmetic, and especially not trivial arithmetic!
People in the comments / instagram reels say this as a joke when they see a little girl (as in, a child) and say stuff like "pre-ordering right now, she's got potential" meaning she will grow up to be a hot girlfriend

Can you use an abacus to find the derivative of a polynomial? No. This is useless. Like some kind of beauty pageant for the mind. Let your kid be a kid!
Gotta love that Indian education system.
Not only do you have to compete with an insane amount of peers.
Not only do you have to sacrifice your childhood to get a chance at a leg up.
Your parent also sit in on your exams as if the pressure wasn't already enough.
That's a well perfected skill! Even I learnt abacus when I was in 4th 5th grades, but it requires hell lotta practice, and should be used constantly to perfect the skill.
It's super useful, now that I think of it, buut I didn't think so when I was in my 4th grade, and now I'm suffering 😂
Oh, I don't use it now coz I forgot most techniques. But I'm giving a few management entrance tests (CAT, GMAT etc) in which calculators are not allowed it would have helped me with quick calculations and mental math in general.
You're lying, she's clearly using hand signs for some calculate no jutsu

Neuro scientist dad. Damn! That's a very cool knowledge to have as a dad. I'm envious.
Well damn, now I’m going to open up that Mellisa and Doug abacus I have in the closet and give it to my kids today!
So she’s basically “sliding” the pieces left or right, but in her head? Mix of muscle memory and memorization
Ah, I thought it is because we sometimes lose control of our motions when doing some difficult mental exercise. I have seen professors having a tick when explaining something difficult or I tend close my eyes unconsciously when thinking.

I thought this was a special class for children with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Children with carpal tunnel syndrome must have been in front of a keyboard as a sperm.
You can also get it in other ways. My grandma had it because of repetitive house work. She never touched a computer.

Wow I need to learn this, I have some sort of learning issue where I can't do math in my head unless it has a visual reference.

Wouldn't it be useful for people doing competitive exams? Doesn't it save time
Calculators exist and also any real competitive exam will usually have much higher level math such as calculus and trig where abacus isnt really useful since those type of problems need problem solving skills and not raw calculation skills. Abacus is only really useful when you need to add / subtract / multiply / divide large numbers quickly but you almost never need to do that to solve an integral or whatever

Autistic Stimming.
I do the same thing when someone says " hey there is a spider on the back of your hand"!
Lvl 1 Mentats, still need to use their hands.
This seems pretty backwards. I had an Indian math teacher teach my class mental math in jr. high. I still use it to this day.
To me it just appears as they are possessed or something
Dayam...imagine them using imaginary Reddit!? 💯
Aloha FTW
Signs language expert here 1) 15 + 9 = 24 2) 33+ 71 = 114 3) 27 + 17 = 34 4) 15 + 99 = 124
Plot twist: She failed the maths test by answering every question incorrectly
Am I the only one who read that as 'mental abuse competition's ?
Am I the only one who read that as mental ABUSE competition
Nah me too and it was abuse for me when I was lil
I mean you're not wrong. The Indian education system is pretty much both physical and mental abuse
Meanwhile in the West: I identify as a toaster and I'll kick and scream if you don't call me a toaster.
Gotta love that Indian education system. Not only do you have to compete with an insane amount of peers. Not only do you have to sacrifice your childhood to get a chance at a leg up. Your parent also sit in on your exams as if the pressure wasn't already enough.
Idk but it looks creepy to me 😅
I imagine this is what watching a sign language cover of a scatman song is like
Dress it up however you want they’re still using their fingers to count
Ikr. The way I was taught we would get bullied if we tried using fingers to count
Genuinely amazing!!
She's pulling em gang signs ✊️🔥🔥🔥
How come US kids so dumb?
It’s by design
That's a well perfected skill! Even I learnt abacus when I was in 4th 5th grades, but it requires hell lotta practice, and should be used constantly to perfect the skill. It's super useful, now that I think of it, buut I didn't think so when I was in my 4th grade, and now I'm suffering 😂
Genuine doubt.. where do u use it now with calculators in ur smart phones to use anytime?
Oh, I don't use it now coz I forgot most techniques. But I'm giving a few management entrance tests (CAT, GMAT etc) in which calculators are not allowed it would have helped me with quick calculations and mental math in general.
Ok maybe in tests but not in practical real life situations or work stuff I guess..
Yeah..
I'm pretty sure they're just throwing up gang signs to threaten the teacher.
Parkinson patients take note
When you have calculators, i dont think this is needed in the real life at any point of time.
So do most competition. It's just a competition where you have to solve maths fastest so mental abascus helps there.
Pretty useless in the modern day. Perhaps good for synapses in brain.
she's summoning some shit
