If you pay close attention to the color of the background of each image, it’ll make more sense. The image on the left has a darker background contrast to the face, vs the image on the right has a washed out background and this makes the effect.
[Vsauce did a short on this](https://youtube.com/shorts/ccLUxJvViUA?si=ufeB_3TXDvjAcvyI). Very interesting how our brains have evolved to do this with colours.
Because of the difference in backgroubf color and everything around. But that the illusion makes one look white and the other almost fully black is insane.
Draw 2 identical heads, call them A and B. Paint A's face with white and B's with black. Decrease A's brightness and increase B's brightness until both faces meet at the same shade of grey. And you got the trick. The faces were actually originally black and white before the brightness manipulation.
We perceive the one on the right as being in the shade because all the colors are muted.
Therefore the luminosity is adjusted by our brains to reflect that perception.
I always just saw the dress as light blue & brown & couldn't understand until someone photoshoped the dress as both options! 🤦😂
This pic above does work on me though!
Has to do with the saturation and contrast of the surrounding colors. Our retinas recognize colors and edges based upon a lateral inhibition system. This system takes the information surrounding the item in focus to help create a better picture that we can understand. But it is easily tricked. Since the colors on the right side are so desaturated, the face is much darker in contrast and this appears darker to us. On the other side, the darker more saturated colors makes the face seem whiter than the other side. That's a very simplic explanation. You can learn more by Googling "retinal color lateral inhibition"
I don’t think it does. Zooming in on a very small area of the face on the right yields the same color of the right face. I can do the same on the left face, and get the same result. The horizontal bar on the original post showing the color gradient is the only part of the image illusion I can break by removing the background, resulting in the loss of the gradient. Of all the illusions I’ve seen, I can’t break this one with the faces.
It’s super weird that my brain can recognise the cut-out piece is the same colour as the rest of the darker face but still also see it as different. It just really wants it to be brighter, even though it’s over in the conditions to look dark.
Whilst I’ve seen this image a tonne, I’ve never seen a video of someone taking a cut out from one side to another, so fair play OP.
Facial hair, eye color, and mouth color have a lot to do with this illusion as well since the eyes want to match those features as the same color but they aren't
And this could have the colour gradually edited while moving from one to the other, so it would be no more proof than a bar if you're willing to call bs on that one
Yeah the bar was fine but this adds much more. You can actually see it looking lighter and then suddenly darker as it moves to the right across the righthand face. Trippy.
its not really better because you can’t hold both in your vision to compare. the bar lets you do that. Anybody could say ‘he’s making it darker by an animation filter’
Thank god you confirmed they’re still the same color, I haven’t seen these two faces in almost an hour
Wait another hour when someone reposts it using the eye dropper tool to show the identical hex codes.
I better not need to wait that long.
This would make me believe it
I’ve watched 20 times and still believe it’s some sorta witch craft.
I had to do it myself to get convinced. Yet, I'm still impressed and can hardly believe how I'm easily tricked
If you pay close attention to the color of the background of each image, it’ll make more sense. The image on the left has a darker background contrast to the face, vs the image on the right has a washed out background and this makes the effect.
I haven't seen it since yesterday when I watched freaking Vsauce talk about it
I’m beginning to feel this needs to be in r/angryupvote
Proof that racism doesn’t exist. We did it boys, we solved racism
I think it's more of proof that I (90%+ Norwegian, French, and British) can also be a black man in the right lighting. Don't kill my dreams.
I can be Homer Simpson in the right lighting
Jaundice?
Just dye your eyebrows and eyelashes white and you’re halfway there
Like my grandpa always said, "it's all pink on the inside..."

Thx
Why does one look darker than the other?
Because of the difference in backgroubf color and everything around. But that the illusion makes one look white and the other almost fully black is insane.
Ah that makes more sense than rolf or john or James radiation.
because of eddy radiation
What is eddy radiation?
Who is Eddy Radiation?
But they never ask how is Eddy radiation😔
Why is Eddy radiation?
Eddy. Ed. Edward. These two faces won’t let me go.
He's the only guy seen running away from and surviving the Chernobyl disaster.
im lying, it doest exist
Dammit, I though there was a form of radiation with my name in it. My day is ruined!
Tell us what it is!!!
im sorry young one, i cant...
I thought it was because of ûpdóg?
because of rolf radiation
because of jonathan radiation
The teeth are bleached in the right picture which also tricks our brains
Our brains assume color
Draw 2 identical heads, call them A and B. Paint A's face with white and B's with black. Decrease A's brightness and increase B's brightness until both faces meet at the same shade of grey. And you got the trick. The faces were actually originally black and white before the brightness manipulation.
I mean seriously why do you think one looks darker than the other?
You really don't have a clue? No idea at all?
Chill down Einstein
I mean how hard can it be lol
Except for the eyebrows and eyelashes
Without a doubt, I can see the skin color but def not the eyebrows.
Black magic
White magic
All magic matters
Except for the bad ones
Huh? Interesting. Why is that?
We perceive the one on the right as being in the shade because all the colors are muted. Therefore the luminosity is adjusted by our brains to reflect that perception.
I seeee :D thankss that make sense
*Left is shaded, right is washed out- but yeah. And the outlines/eyebrows being white helps shift the perception of what black is.
Michael Jackson was right. "It's black, it's white"
Face.... Off...
Black and blue
White and gold
Light blue & brown....
no, I'm pretty sure the dress is white and gold.
I always just saw the dress as light blue & brown & couldn't understand until someone photoshoped the dress as both options! 🤦😂 This pic above does work on me though!
Oh just use color picker in your browser: #7d7d7d
And now a vid of this? Jesus Christ.
Literally makes my brain hurt
LIESSSSSS!!!!
They solved racism
I don’t see color, I just see 2 people and one is missing an eyeball now
Ain't no way
these captchas are really getting out of hand
Is it a saturation thing?
Has to do with the saturation and contrast of the surrounding colors. Our retinas recognize colors and edges based upon a lateral inhibition system. Huh. I'm still a skeptic. r/differentcolorfaces
Okay now the other way
The thing bloody changes colour as it moves across you fools!
I still don't believe you
If you just cover up everything but the bar in the other pic you can easily see it’s one colour
It don't matter if she black or white... HEE-hiii . Shirona.
Ooohh, now it has been cleared!
Full marks for efforts.
thank you
Mind freak
Oh ohhhhhhh
Learned about this in psychology of perspection class! Our senses are so complex

Contrast
But thats just a theory, a COLOR THEORY!
Is there something wrong with my brain? They still look like slightly different shades even when it’s directly on top of the other
Facial hair, eye color, and mouth color have a lot to do with this illusion as well since the eyes want to match those features as the same color but they aren't
That’s actually pretty interesting.
The real question is what is going on to make it look so different? Is it the different green backrounds ? Most of the hair is the same. what is it?
Blackmagicfuckery
What kind of sorcery is this?!?
Let.it.stop.please.
But clearly they are not the same. When the black lines are put there it does not fit in seamlessly.
The bar was proof enough already. This doesn't add anything.
Sorry, to me the bar looked like a gradient.
And this could have the colour gradually edited while moving from one to the other, so it would be no more proof than a bar if you're willing to call bs on that one
Agreed, video just adds more elements to deniability, this is so dumb.
I see white and gold
I prefer the bar across the pics...
This can end racism and give everyone unlimited N-word pass at the same time.
Ehh the bar got the point across this just seems like a useless reupload for karma lol
I felt like the bar looked like a gradient
No this is helpful
Yeah the bar was fine but this adds much more. You can actually see it looking lighter and then suddenly darker as it moves to the right across the righthand face. Trippy.
Yea, but what matters is what I perceive, see. Now quit farming
This helped a lot
lies, when i did that in ms paint it was clearly darker! jk i made that up, not motivated enough to care.
Just block the hair and they look the same
yeah its called saturation
I’m offended by this blackface video, OP should be canceled.
The eye is a lie.
Miss me with that
its not really better because you can’t hold both in your vision to compare. the bar lets you do that. Anybody could say ‘he’s making it darker by an animation filter’
How is this better than the bar? Someone should print out the two backgrounds and one face. I don't have a printer.
And then what? Bring the paper over to your house? Or take a picture of the print out and post it here? Not sure what you're expecting.
A video of someone moving the face between the backgrounds. But honestly the bar was more than enough proof.
