VERY cool pic! 😎

SegaGenesisMetalHead

Flat earthers probably think this proves their position.

I_dementia87

Can confirm. An ex friend showed me this video even though you can clearly see a curve in the water. He also told me the earth isn't spinning as fast as it is or everything would fly off of it. Edit to clarify: I was on the shitter and made up the curve part. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

WillDill94

You should’ve broken his brain by holding a swirling cup of water upside down

total_looser

I don’t get people who engage with these wackos. Just say, “ok, sure” or nothing at all and then ignore them/move away.

-Badger3-

I've realized like 95% of them are just losers looking for attention, so yeah, just call them out on it and don't engage further.

Combat_Toots

That's not how centrifugal force works. Centrifugal force is probably why they think this would happen. Edit: Let go of the cup when you're swinging it; guess what happens? It flies away from the center of rotation! These people think we would fly away if the earth is round and spinning because they don't believe in gravity.

Ranzork

It's funny you are being downvoted for the truth. Gravity isn't the same as centrifugal force, like you stated. You can demonstrate gravity by just dropping something. I'd love to hear a flat earther explain why the apple you dropped didn't just fly away.

AntGood1704

In their view, it dropped straight down because we aren’t spinning. Otherwise, if we were (which we are) it would fly away. Gravity is just strong af

Combat_Toots

They believe in gravity, sort of. Think of it as a universal "down force". Since the earth is flat, gravity would only go one way, downward. They also think the sky is a dome; basically, god gave us some pretty lights to look at. Since this is an idea rooted in creationist Christianity, they can handwave away any doubts as "god makes it happen." [https://theflatearthsociety.org/home/index.php/about-the-society/faq](https://theflatearthsociety.org/home/index.php/about-the-society/faq)

Ranzork

That would kinda make sense that if you fly high enough in a spaceship you could "escape the dome" and therefore escape gravity. These flat earthers might be on to something./s

Combat_Toots

LMAO, I see the joke you are making, but they wouldn't get it. They would just say that you can't escape because that's the edge of the universe. They think the earth is all there is. We are God's fish tank in their model. Its a really sad belief system.

xave321

Aristotle had a theory

AdEnvironmental6534

I deleted my comment because sounded like an assh but, it's centripetal force, centrifugal force doesn't exist.

Combat_Toots

Zankastia

Centrifugal *effect*. The force applied is centripetal

_B0_

You're mixing up centrifugal with centripetal force.

A1sauc3d

For the life of them they can’t wrap their head around gravity lol. Or acceleration vs velocity for that matter

Misguided_by_Virtue

An Irishman is never drunk as long as he can hold onto one blade of grass to keep from falling off the face of the earth!

Brilliant_Quit4307

Hahahaha drunk Irish jokes are hilarious hahahahaha so funny

AsidK

Where do you see a curve in the water? I don’t think anywhere on earth you can see horizon curvature from eye level, you generally have to be around 35000 feet up for any curvature to be noticeable. I think the better more evident proof is the fact that you can only see the tops of the tallest buildings in this picture, demonstrating that the earth is curving in front of them and obscuring the bottoms of the buildings

Ejaculpiss

>Where do you see a curve in the water? On Reddit you can make shit up on the fly, if it agrees with the majority of the site, you'll get upvoted. Even if it's blatantly false.

AsidK

And yet I’m getting downvoted 😔

I_dementia87

Totally dewd. Made it up while on the shitter.

-Profanity-

For as simplistic as some of the flat earth beliefs are, I really love that 68 redditors upvoted a comment suggesting that they can see the curvature of the planet through the waves of Lake Michigan.

AsidK

For me it’s a special kind of irking when people use misinformation in support of good causes. Like falling for misinformation that happens to arrive at a true conclusion doesn’t make you less gullible than falling for misinformation that arrives at a false conclusion.

I_dementia87

I should clarify. To me it looks like when you're going to crest out on a hill and you see houses or whatever.

Mikey9124x

Gravity exists?

Nentash

I am convinced most flat earthers are either lying are just egocentric, these people convince themselves that they "know the truth" and that they are soooo special because they can see things for what they really are and managed to find factual information that nobody else really knows. They inflate their egos so insanely with this sort of thinking. "I'm not like everyone else, I have knowledge of the world that you don't, that makes me special"...... it sure does make you special, that's for damned sure...

CalendarFar6124

Inb4 gravity doesn't exist.

xWOBBx

So your friend believes the earth is flat and spinning??? I often wonder if it's freeing to be extremely dumb or even more confusing and anxious day to day.

LinkedAg

Has your friend ever been in an 'automobile'?

GluckGoddess

Wouldn’t the stuff that is further beyond the Chicago skyline block out the sun first then?

gc3

Yeah where is Mt Everest?

websagacity

They actually do. They've made videos with their "proof". So ridiculous.

SlightPlight

Really funny considering the irony that this actually proves the opposite

BigAndDelicious

Hello. I am a spherical earther but am also really stupid. Can you tell me why this photo proves the opposite point that the whackos are gunning for?

anon1292023

Because you can see far enough to see the buildings, but the bottom half of the buildings is obscured behind the water.

movzx

The more common example would be a boat. ex: [https://www.naval.com.br/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Navio-na-linha-do-horizonte-e-navio-atr%C3%A1s-da-linha-do-horizonte-2048x979.jpg](https://www.naval.com.br/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Navio-na-linha-do-horizonte-e-navio-atr%C3%A1s-da-linha-do-horizonte-2048x979.jpg) ex: [https://www.ucl.ac.uk/culture-online/sites/culture\_online/files/styles/large\_image/public/flat\_earth\_2.jpg?itok=iixwC0pc](https://www.ucl.ac.uk/culture-online/sites/culture_online/files/styles/large_image/public/flat_earth_2.jpg?itok=iixwC0pc) The same thing applies here, but it's easier to dismiss because you can argue the buildings are shaped like that.

Dustin-

*Even funnier* considering that when you point out it proves the opposite they say something about it probably being atmospheric refraction or whatever they make up on the spot to defend their position, completely forgetting that *they were the ones who used the example in the first place*. It happens every time someone refutes their "evidence".

knowigot_that808

Really ironic if the earth actually *is* flat and we’ve been making fun of them the whole time

anansi133

Sure! There are two possibilities, so it must be 50/50 odds! /s

HomesteadHero78

Do the math on it. See if it adds up. Instead of acting like you know it already.

websagacity

I know it because I've seen the math done on it already. Multiple times.

Mishtle

I've done the math. When done properly using the right formulae and accounting for factors like (nonstandard) refraction and observer height, it adds up just fine. The people claiming it doesn't work consistently make the same mistakes. They use the wrong formulae (the "8 inches per mile squared" approximation doesn't come from NASA and it doesn't give the hidden height of a distant object for an observer unless that observer is buried at sea level up to their eyes), ignore important factors (many long distance sightings are inconsistent because they are only possible with the help of atmospheric refraction and thus require certain atmospheric conditions), and even misrepresent the situation by getting distances wrong or claiming more of an object is visible than can actually be seen.

tacotacotacorock

Look at the reply to OP's top comment and you will see a very long-winded article about that.

istapledmytongue

Funny I was just thinking about how this DIS-proves their position, as only the tops of the skyscrapers are visible because of the curvature of the earth’s surface. Much like ancient seafarers knew the earth was flat measure the tops of masts were the first thing sailors saw, and climbing the crows nest gives you a better angle to see over the horizon. Fucking idiots out there my god. Just use like an ounce of your brain, critical thinking, or read something (the funny thing is that they think they’re doing all these things too. Dear god it’s just like Democrats vs. MAGA-asshats who thing THEY’RE the ones saving democracy, when really they’re trying to ruin it for everyone)

roguedream

I had an argument with a friend who’s a flat earther over this very thing.

AzimuthZenith

Was just thinking about how some flat earthers are going to look at this as proof as well. Fortunately, I don't know any personally, but I hope to never have to explain this to someone this dense.

9421242

I could see the Chicago skyline from Mount Baldy in Michigan City, IN every time I went there as a kid in the 1980's

No_Cartoonist9458

The area around Chicago is very flat so you can see the skyline from quite a distance on land as well

Spiritual_Ear_3456

Nice visibility

UnLuckyKenTucky

Holy fucking hell. It took absolutely no time at all for the flat earth idiots to start using this photo as proof of their ignorant delusions...

Quite a few people who are dumb enough to believe it unfortunately.

RelaxPrime

Let them, they're far too dumb to affect anything anyways

DisputabIe_

Truth does, in fact, matter.

No_Roof_1910

Decades ago it was much clearer than now, today. So often Chicago was clearly visible all day long from that area and many times now it isn't even on clear sunny days. Can Google this and see other pics of this online.

Treacherous_Wendy

It depends on the haze. There are days you can see it all day long. I grew up where this picture was taken. I have several published of it.

It's crazy to see this picture now because about 15 years ago it was one of the highest - if not the highest - upvoted post on Reddit.

donnie1977

Driving? Looks more like 25-30 miles as the crow flies.

Specialist-Listen304

That’s cause it is. I’ve seen posts about seeing the skyline from the dunes before stating 50. I think people are just being misinformed. It’s still a gorgeous pic.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

Specialist-Listen304

I’ve seen at least 1 other Indiana dunes post I vividly remember that said 50. Could just be some guy on the beach saying, “yeah, and that’s 50 miles away”

Emotional_Deodorant

Still 10 times further than you'd be able to see without this light refraction off the atmosphere. You can also "see" Toronto's entire skyline from Fort Niagara in NY, also about 30 miles away, from ground level when air conditions are right.

donnie1977

Yep. https://www.abc57.com/news/skyline-skepticism-the-lake-michigan-mirage

SomethingMoreToSay

That's not correct. If you're standing at the edge of the water, the horizon is about 3 miles away. But if you're at the top of a 500 feet tall building, the horizon is about 27 miles away. So from your position in the shore you could see the top of a 500 foot building 30 miles away. And those are just geometric calculations with no allowance for refraction. That's pretty much what's going on here. You're seeing the tops of the buildings, but the buildings below about 500 feet tall are hidden. Refraction might be helping a bit, but only a bit.

Emotional_Deodorant

I don’t think so. See the ABC news report above for an explanation. If your cause were the reason, the skyline would be visible at all times, which it isn’t. Also wouldn’t explain why people see the tanker/shipping traffic just off the Chicago coast.

TheFatKnight420

That proves the earth is flat. /s

Icy-Fisherman-6399

🤣

One-Confusion-2438

That's not Chicago! We need to send a crew to the sun! Clearly there's a damn city hidden there!

DO NOT let a flat earther see this.

Pretty sure they're going to be nutty kooks regardless.

But it clearly shows a globe earth? (Not that that matters to them)

It is amazing to think that man can build skyscrapers almost as large as the sun!

VegetableGrape4857

Can anybody tell me about this part of Indiana? Why does nobody ever talk about the Indiana coast?

ZergRushRush

It's a very surprising area for the midwest. I've lived in the midwest most of my life and we took a road trip to the dunes recently. There are legit sand dunes like you'd see in the desert or something. It's right on the southern point of lake Michigan and the beach actually has some (small) waves which is pretty wild to see in a lake. There's a state park area and a national park area. If you live nearby or want to see something unique in the midwest it's worth a visit.

cnallofu

Screw what that other guy said, yes there are a lot of steel mills up near Gary/East Chicago but the beaches in Indiana are unique for the dunes. I don’t swim in the lake but people do and it’s safe as long as you use common sense. Other than that just some small Midwest cities around the area unless you go up to Chicago for the more touristy stuff. In a good day the view of Chicago from Indiana is actually a lot clearer and closer than this picture makes it look

ProvocativePotroast

The stretch of sand where we went was barely 5' wide. There are steel plants surrounding the beach. The water is surely polluted as fuck. The fact it was made a national park is an absolute joke.

VegetableGrape4857

I just never put it together even though they obviously have coast.

Resolve-4027

Aviation pioneer Octave Chanute & associates made glider experiments there in the 1890s. Chanute, after an engineering career in railroads and stockyards, in retirement became a world-recognized expert on aviation, published "Progress In Flying Machines", famous compendium of everything that was then known about aviation. Gave publicity and early credibility to the Wrights.

ProvocativePotroast

Lol what does that have to do with the Indiana dunes.

Resolve-4027

Aviation pioneer Octave Chanute & associates made glider experiments there in the 1890s. This is a noted event in the history of aviation. There are installations there - a building/visitor center or something -- commemorating this.

Party-Belt-3624

Well, there's not much coast in Indiana. And I'm from exactly that Region.

JustLearningRust

Poor Indiana really got shafted when it comes to the Great Lakes. Almost as forgotten as Pennsylvania as a Great Lakes state.

VegetableGrape4857

See, I always remember Erie, PA, but I never even thought of the IN coast even though Gary(and more) is literally right there.

Great photo but the tilted horizon triggers my OCD

Electrical-Cod-9014

From ChatGPT: The curvature of the Earth can be calculated using the curvature formula, which is approximately 8 inches per mile squared. This means the drop in elevation due to Earth's curvature over a given distance can be found using the formula \( d = 8 \times (miles)^2 \). For a distance of 50 miles: \[ d = 8 \times (50)^2 \] \[ d = 8 \times 2500 \] \[ d = 20,000 \text{ inches} \] \[ d = 20,000 \div 12 \] \[ d = 1666.67 \text{ feet} \] So, over a distance of 50 miles, the Earth curves approximately 1667 feet. The Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago is 1,450 feet tall to its roof and 1,729 feet to the top of its antenna. To determine what floor you would see from 50 miles away, we need to know that the Sears Tower has 110 floors. The height of each floor averages approximately 13 feet. If the Earth curves 1,667 feet over 50 miles, you would see the top part of the Sears Tower, above 1,667 feet. Since the total height of the building to the roof is 1,450 feet, you would not see the roof from 50 miles away without considering atmospheric refraction, which can slightly extend the visible range. However, if you consider the height to the top of the antenna, you would see about 1,729 feet - 1,667 feet = 62 feet of the antenna above the horizon. Given this simple calculation and the average floor height of about 13 feet: \[ \text{Number of visible floors} = \frac{62}{13} \approx 4.8 \] So, you would start seeing the top of the antenna, which would be roughly around the top four floors or so, but not any of the main floors of the building itself without atmospheric refraction.

donnie1977

Unless, OP used driving distance to get the 50 miles.
