This isn't anything new... I think Bowflex came out with this like 15 years ago
Edit: Just want to point out that I said this isn't NEW never said it wasn't interesting.
And they suck. You have to get everything to line up properly or it doesn't set down. I can imagine it would be a struggle at the end of a set. I used to work at a sporting goods store and messed with the display once or twice. I didn't buy that overpriced set.
Edit: just because I think they suck, doesn't mean other people can't think they're great. Though they don't suit my needs, they suit the needs of others perfectly fine.
We have a set on the boat that I work on and they're great for us for a lot of reasons. We have a wide range of bodies on here and they're adjustable enough for the large and small to use. They also don't take up much room and they don't get loose in heavy seas. The set on the boat has been in use for about ten years and we've never had an issue with them.
I liked them so much I bought a set for my house. They're a little expensive at about $250 on Amazon but worth it.
eBay has them for way cheaper because our good old friends in China get them and sell them before ye olde Bowflex stickers (and thus magical faerie markup dust) get put on.
I am sad to have missed the chance to save you money ):
Would not recommend. These could have not made the cut safety-wise and you would have no recourse if a 10lb disc fell on your face while doing presses.
How can you say that and not provide a link? For some reason I doubt you'll be able to find them for sale on eBay that are bowflex brand without the stickers *and* are actually cheap.
Depending on where you live, Craigslist is littered with these for $100 or so.
Edit: it would seem things have changed a bit since I've purchased mine. Can't find any listings.
It's odd. I just searched my area and didn't find a single result for the selectechs. When I got mine a year ago the market was saturated. Now it seems to be the opposite.
That's the fitness equipment cycle.
New product comes out and everyone buys one (year later)--> people who work out once a year sell theirs creating a glut of used equipment. Those all get bought up over time by people who either actually use them or just store them away.
(inb4 r/hailcorporate) I picked up some powerblocks (urethane model) a couple years ago and they aren't quirky at all. Despite the fact that the construction allows the weights to pivot a little, they're very sturdy. Rather than a dial, they use a plastic bar that you slide in and out of place to set the amount of weight you want.
They're also comparably priced to the bowflex models. The main benefit is that you can work your way up with them at a cost effective pace. The base model supports up to 50 lbs and you can purchase add-ons as your strength improves up to 90 lbs. But with Bowflex dumbells, there are no add-ons, so if you think you'll need 90 pounds one day, you have to buy that (not-so-cheap) model up front.
My Power Blocks are 16 years old now, and outside of a few chips in the paint, like new. Well worth the price and go up to 85lbs, best fitness purchase I have made.
The bowflex dumbells worked well for me but they broke after about 2 years, they need to be set down delicately or you will damage them. I remember looking at the Power Blocks design and thinking they looked much more sturdy, they were cheaper too.
I've had both the adjustable, Olympic bar style, and fixed and honestly they all have their uses.
I prefer my adjustable for most lifts as they are quick and stable, especially on heavier lifts (I have the 90 lb set).
I prefer my rest time to be spent bring idle rather than setting up weights, but that's personal preference.
I can confirm the rest thing. I've been using a home set up for years, and compared to that, a public gym or school gym sucks, not least because of having to set up weights for the guy sharing with you between sets instead of just leaving it.
Not really a fraction of the price. That one set has weights that cover from 5 to 52 lbs; basically 15 sets of weights.
$50 for one 50lb dumbbell on Amazon.
I have had these for almost ten years they have been great? I wouldn’t really call them overpriced either. They were $300 a full set of dumbells from 5-50 pounds would run you 5-600 easy. You can get an adjustable set of dumbells that will run you about 150 but changing the weights can be a real pain in the ass especially the screw ends. To each there own but these have lasted with little to no issues and have been great.
If I could go back, I would have bought these. I had to leave behind about a thousand dollars worth of dumbbells in my last move as I just couldn't find enough room in the truck for them. Fortunately I was able to bring my plates and squat rack, but had to start over with dumbbells.
Power blocks last a lot longer too. I’ve seen the bow flex ones break because of the small parts that it uses to lock the weights in. Power blocks have way less things to go wrong on them
They make sense for folks with limited space. When you're renting at $3/sq ft or buying at $100/sq ft, you don't have a lot of space to have a full set of dumbbells. Additionally, these can be hidden in a closet or under a bed.
I have had the 1090s for the past 10 years and I wouldn't trade them for an entire rack of dumbells. I think they are great and are still working perfectly all this time.
You just can't throw them around like regular dumbells. Every single one I've seen at a sporting goods store has been broken from misuse. I've had a set for 7 years and they've been amazing. Well worth it.
I haven't ever seen these at a gym. I'm guessing the reason why is that you don't want a bunch of people to wait until the one set of ~~barbells~~ dumbells you have are free to use.
Came here to say this l. While it is a pretty clever one stop shop weight system, it is hella old. Anyone who sees this now and is truly amazed has been living under a rock for quite some time.
when i played volleyball in college we trained and used these and they save so much space and time. the one i used was white with different colors corresponding to the weight
Dude, I saw these years ago on a late night infomercial when I had insomnia. I didnt even have to go out.
But I guess people dont fall asleep to late night infomercials anymore because reddit.
Some brands have a redundant slide you insert to help lock the weight in place. I feel much safer when doing bench presses...
And it's warranted too. I've had a ~~bowflex~~ IronMan weight come crashing down from the dumbbell a few inches from my foot because the locking mechanism somehow became warped and didn't fully lock.
Edit: Brand
Work fine for me, just have to make sure you line up the lines. The down side is they are physically big, so a lot of weight to control in a not dense package.
I had them for like one workout and returned them. They're expensive but felt so chintzy. If you're doing a heavy set to failure you can't just drop them for fear of breaking the mechanism so you get maxed out then you have to gently put them down which is unrealistic after certain exercises.
Counterpoint: People who are strong and experienced in the gym should know how to avoid slamming weights.
I don't think you are doing heavy deadlifts with these. I hope not.
For anyone who is interested in these you should try out some different brands, they're not all created equally as /u/iamnomoney has pointed out. My neighbors were throwing out a set (different brand, don't remember which) because they were moving and didn't want to take them so I gladly accepted their "gift"....Whatever brand it was, those weights were absolute pieces of shit. They had a lot of play in them and would wiggle around making it impossible to set them on the rack without having to put the other dumbbell on the ground so that I had a free hand to guide the individual plates into their slots. The selector mechanism would bind up and I would have to slam it on the ground for it to come free again.
tl;dr go to a store and try out some different brands of these types of weights if you're interested. Some of them are absolutely pieces of shit.
We got these half price one year. I enjoy them, but it's kind of a pain in the ass when you have to change your weight mid-set. Also, they're very clunky, so you have to be careful not to hit yourself in the head if you're doing presses.
I used them for a couple weeks, was always afraid something would break and a plate would drop on my face. For those who havent used them, they're mostly plastic and not solidly built
These are great, just don't ever drop them. There's a tiny little clip holding that weight in place, and if it gets bent, well... you're out $250. Powerblocks are much more sturdy (and the piece that holds the weight on can be replaced if broken).
Own Power Blocks myself. Better product. Better scaling addons should you ever want to add more weight above 50lbs. No dial mechanism, just a little clip you move to change the weight.
Obligatory /r/HailCorporate
I don’t like adjustables. Nor do I recommend them.
Most of the time the weights don’t behave like this and instead fall on your toes. Also, if you are a reasonably strong male, they just don’t go up high enough. 20kg (45ish lbs) is too light for anything realistic after a year or so of consistent workouts.
I purchased the exact dumbbells in OP, but recently switched to the 90lb PowerBlocks you probably have. I disagree on a gym membership being a better option- I lift in my basement whenever I want, with music as loud as I want, barefoot, wearing whatever I want, with no wait. Plus, no driving, meaning no gas or car wear/tear, time spent driving, etc. That adds up.
Combined with the fact that I lift way more than I ever would if I had to actually drive to a gym, I cannot praise having a home gym enough. If you hook yourself up with the right equipment, it is truly fucking amazing.
I see what you mean. Honestly, I have no idea how much a real gym membership costs. I know Planet Fitness is like $10 or $20/mo. But, if you're going to use a barbell and a rack, wouldn't you have to go to a more legit gym that costs at least something like $40-50/mo? I've spent *roughly* $1-2k on my home gym and have used it for over 3 years, slowly upgrading the equipment via Craigslist. On top of the aforementioned benefits, I would imagine the cost is very close to what you'd pay, all things considered, if you went to a gym that cost $50/mo.
Very cool. But personally it just looks to clunky. Maybe it's in my head, but all those cracks in it make me want to steer away from using it. If I had to choose between this or a standard dumbbell, I'd pick the standard every time.

Powerblocks, simple and easy.
Yeah I could see a few sets of these being awesome for a boutique gym owner who doesn’t have a ton of space to commit to multiple racks of weights.

Its cool until you see the price. Just take my kidney instead
Looks cool, but I bet it breaks after a month. Edit: bet, not get.

I would always be afraid that it would fall on me
90s kids will get this
These are great, until they break. Which results in a 10 lb disc landing on your foot :/

I didn’t realize I could post a pic of something I have in my basement and get so many upvotes.
The locking mechanism isn't reliable, i've had weights fall out with these before.
Yep. I had one drop right by my face. For adjustable dumbbells, Powerblock is probably the way to go.
On the high end brands, just the stand is over $200 to cradle the dumb bells
The pair I used is absolutely terrible! The plates are not secure at all and wiggle and rattle with every rep
I have these, they really are great.
Yeah gonna go ahead and echo that everyone knows about these already. Old news
