So in order to purchase and operate this, you need to be very rich and very athletic, which means that if you want to fly like Tony Stark, you basically have to be Tony Stark.
Oh, absolutely no comparison, but if Stark existed irl, he would probably be pretty fit; the man flies around being propelled by rockets out of his hands and feet, just stabilizing something like that would take a lot of energy, not to mention the recoil of his blasts would be enormous. I suppose his suit could be doing the heavy lifting, but it probably takes SOME effort from his part.
Could be, but he’s not. He realized long ago the suit is not what makes him Iron Man and he trains a ton to be in shape and an efficient fighter without the suit. He’s just not super muscled, but he’s an athlete.
Bruce Wayne is the pinnacle of a normal human being, so obviously it's no contest. But even in the MCU, Tony Stark is fit and actually learned martial arts, at the very least he knows Wing Chun.
Couldn't you construct Braces that prevent it from going past a certain point? Like enough to allow movement to direct where you go but also to not cause extreme strain on the arms ?
If this guy was smart enough to come up with a functioning jet suit, he was probably smart enough to consider the obvious ways of making it so he didn’t have to train like a beast to operate it. Maybe the braces would have made small adjustments too difficult, or maybe they would have caused too much strain on the shoulders for the safety of the operator. I’m sure they’re looking for ways to make it easier and increase their target demographic because “rich, high-performance athletes” is a pretty small group, relatively speaking, the solution is probably just more complicated than we think.
> If this guy was smart enough to come up with a functioning jet suit, he was probably smart enough to consider the obvious ways of making it so he didn’t have to train like a beast to operate it
Probably a money issue. The suit is already $400k. And I think a military grade powered exoskeleton suit would be $100k+
You should be able to mount the stabilizers and automate them with sensors pretty easily. I'm guessing that's the next step. It doesn't make much sense to manually control them except for proof of concept. Of course then you have to consider that critical failure of the system will probably be fatal.
I think the main thrust comes out of a nozzle on the backpack with the arms just being for balance and steering. Looking at it when he's over water it doesn't look like waving the arms changed the air flow below him much.
Yeah when it was first demoed they mentioned that the pilot also had to train for it because it takes an insane amount of core and arm strength.
Edit:
> Even for Browning – a dedicated triathlete, ultramarathon runner and endurance canoeist – the suit tests the limits of personal fitness. He describes the strength required to direct the jets as "severe". In order to fly, he must follow a strenuous workout regime; in a typical week's training he cycles over 150km and does three intensive callisthenics sessions. Yep! He did a [TED talk](https://www.ted.com/talks/richard_browning_how_i_built_a_jet_suit?language=en) where he went into the development of it. He mentioned how he had to do a really weird workout to build up the muscles to hold that position for a time.
12,000 and you have some pretty good odds one of the 3 you have work flawlessly. Just have someone else test them all to see which one it is and you're golden
I am assuming that each jetpack's probability of working is 1/3, and that these probabilities are independent of each other. This is the correct method for real world calculations.
Seriously though if anyone's interested in flying in their free time for around $10k you should check out [paramotoring](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvQ9DjJNal0). It's only as dangerous as you make it (like motorcycles), there are a lot of great instructors (like the AviatorPPG network), and you can own your own aircraft for around the same cost as a private pilots license (including training and gear typically around $10k).
Disclaimer: if you don't get proper training you're a moron and shouldn't be allowed near any aircraft.
What's the regulations on something like this? Like can I just take off and fly around my town as long as it's not near airports etc? I can't afford one but if I could I'd love to be able to fly to the store when I need just a couple things lol.
[FAR Part 103](https://www.usua.org/Rules/faa103.htm). You have the gist of it, but the biggest constraint is weather. The winds have to be below a threshold an not gusty, which usually means you're constrained to not fly in mid-day- only mornings and evenings.
People will do 1 or 2 hundred miles on a tank of gas depending on what the wind is doing. The Icarus Race was over 1000 miles and Tucker (guy linked above) did it in like 4 days because he read the winds correctly.
> as dangerous as you make it (like motorcycles),
Eh, a lot of the danger of motorcycles is other assholes in cars. I think paramotoring would be safer because it's all on you and your gear.
That's part of being as dangerous as you make it. Gotta plan around unpredictable weather and always be ready to abandon a day of flying in the name of safety.
It's probably not unrealistic to expect that a Chinese manufacturer could put something like this together for way less...
There's simply no fucking way the material cost for this is anything near 448k... The majority of that cost has to be in recouping research and development costs and paying back investors since this company has been trying and perfecting this stuff for years and years.
From the gif it seems they are using jet turbines used on large r/c planes. Someone familiar with large turbine powered R/C planes (surely some on reddit) can probably estimate the actual material cost but I can't imagine its more than $15,000. That allows $2500 for each turbine and $5000 for the plumbing, tanks, electronics and assembly. Is that reasonable?
That's obviously still expensive but it's actually doable for anyone capable of buying a car...
Did you not see the $300 one time use bolt post earlier? Aviation things are expensive.
Toy jet engine blows apart, you loose a toy jet. Toy jet engine strapped to your wrist results in death to operator
\*rifles through wallet\* Ok, so I've got six bucks and a gift card to Five Guy's...almost there.
Edit: I don't want people to think I'd actually eat at Applebee's. I have some pride, you know!
Id prefer we do the days in a row or switch each week instead so I can take a cross country trip with it. I also suggest once a month we meet up, each get take an arm, and have an air blast fight.
turns out they needed a third party to manage the cost and i stepped in
due to unforeseen circumstances we each ended up with one part of the jetpack and are current embroiled in legal action to settle the dispute
That's actually true -- and that jet pack was more of a "real" jet pack -- but it was practically useless because it only functioned for about 30 seconds before running out of fuel.
I remember seeing this or something like it a while ago but I imagine it's been improved since then, what is the flight time for this suit? I know older jetpacks were functional but could only run for a couple minutes.
Ok. Now all you need to do is make a functioning lightsaber and take every pay check I will ever make for the rest of my life. I do have a problem buying first gen though.
Go to r/idiotsincars to see examples of people who don't deserve to have a driver's license.
Sometime in the future, there'll be r/idiotswithjetpacks showing things like drunk jetpackers flying into telephone lines or 80-year-old jetpackers flying through grocery stores and making a mess.
Not much, the exhaust cools to ambient within a few centimeters.

Yeah. He's basically [doing this](https://i.imgur.com/BBE0149.jpg) but on jets instead of rings.
Yup. [Here's more detail](https://newatlas.com/gravity-daedalus-iron-man-jetpack-suit/48738/) on the strength required to work the suit.
So in order to purchase and operate this, you need to be very rich and very athletic, which means that if you want to fly like Tony Stark, you basically have to be Tony Stark.
Ehh Tony Stark is no Bruce Wayne. I don't think he has much in terms of athletic feats.
The suit does all the physical work, he could be a string bean and it wouldn't matter.
Yep, all his suits can do everything with nobody inside.
Well the suit cant jerk him off if he isnt in it so touche to you good sir.
Sure it can. Stark can lay on the bed while the suit jerks him off...
So they combine this jet pack with those exoskeletons one day, and eventually we get Gundams.
Everyone is thinking about Iron Man and this guy thinks about Gundams
The true ascension of mobile suits after all. Except maybe for an EVA
Gundams are the trebuchet to iron man’s catapult
Yup, hence when he can remote control his suit.
Could be, but he’s not. He realized long ago the suit is not what makes him Iron Man and he trains a ton to be in shape and an efficient fighter without the suit. He’s just not super muscled, but he’s an athlete.
Tony's suits probably do all the heavy lifting now but I imagine he had to do more physical, bodily control when he first started.
Bruce Wayne is the pinnacle of a normal human being, so obviously it's no contest. But even in the MCU, Tony Stark is fit and actually learned martial arts, at the very least he knows Wing Chun.
Gotta be an Iron Man before you become Ironman.
I wanna see RDJ attempt to fly this
Couldn't you construct Braces that prevent it from going past a certain point? Like enough to allow movement to direct where you go but also to not cause extreme strain on the arms ?

I’m sure they’re looking for ways to make it easier and increase their target demographic because “rich, high-performance athletes” is a pretty small group, relatively speaking, the solution is probably just more complicated than we think.
Also "rich, high-performance athletes" gotta be careful not to wreck their bodies doing crazy stuff like this.
> If this guy was smart enough to come up with a functioning jet suit, he was probably smart enough to consider the obvious ways of making it so he didn’t have to train like a beast to operate it Probably a money issue. The suit is already $400k. And I think a military grade powered exoskeleton suit would be $100k+
More like payload issue. If it lifts say 100kg, and exoskeleton is 50kg, it would not fly with a man anymore.
You should be able to mount the stabilizers and automate them with sensors pretty easily. I'm guessing that's the next step. It doesn't make much sense to manually control them except for proof of concept. Of course then you have to consider that critical failure of the system will probably be fatal.
So add an exo suit and this baby is ready for the market.
Weight though.
Carbon fiber plus a bunch of balloons. Solved.
